dguy in dcorner: that reminds me of wat gov. of rivers state,Rotimi Amaechi said on a programme called 60 Minutes With Angela. He said: ''i don't think that not building school, water or light constitutes an impeachable offence. What constitutes an impeachabe offence by constitution is security of lives & property...''this was way back in 2012 not 2013...so if GEJ likes construct road, build airport like u claimed, the security is the priority and which he has failed in totally. |

PS: I just remembered now that there are still some political parties called Labour and the All Progressives Grand Alliance. Well, I know I should say something about them but I have already concluded this piece. Copyright PUNCH. http://www.punchng.com/opinion/viewpoint/2014-president-jonathan-join-the-apc/ |
The next beneficiary is the APC. Of course, there is no question the party will reject Jonathan if he decides to camp with it. The APC will accept anything. Joining the party is as easy as buying a broom in Ariara Market, Aba. Right now, the APC still swears it’s different when it is clear to the blind that it is transfiguring into another PDP right before our very eyes. One of the APC’s honchos tries to explain their un-principled recruitment of members as pragmatism, saying they have to consult the likes of Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida despite their record because the APC cannot afford to be “too puritanical.” This is a bit of a stretch considering nobody ever thought of the APC as puritans, but I get his point. He is saying to catch the Nigerian monkeys, the APC will have to become one as well. Hence, the APC has been behaving like a monkey, jumping from the tree in Minna to the one in Ota. This should not be unexpected. We all know that their party is “All Progressives” and their definition of progressive has been stretched to an elastic limit; it is snapping in their faces. Jonathan can even propose a merger between both parties. As we have seen, the biggest problems the new merger will likely face are those of names and logo, not necessarily a synchronisation of ideas or programmes. Would they become the Peoples Democratic Congress or All Progressives Democrats? And how do you fuse a broom with an umbrella to create a coherent logo? Well, they will figure something out; they always. Another benefit of the APC taking Jonathan is that it will save them a lot of hassles. Some weeks back, it “advocated” for the legislature to kick-start an impeachment process against Jonathan. The very moment he becomes an APC member, they will swallow their rants and begin to campaign for him as a “progressive”. And other PDP members too will join in droves and before you know it, another monster is born! The only thing that worries me is that if Jonathan joins the APC, there would be no “opposition” left to pursue with clichéd press releases. Alhaji Lai Mohammed will have to take to farming. One small problem that I see on the horizon is that of ethnicity. Those who insist that power must return to the North and, have joined the APC for this purpose would need to be placated. Once again, it is a problem that is easily solved. Jonathan can toss some peanuts in their direction (I hear peanuts is a monkey delicacy). Then, the biggest and best beneficiaries: Nigerians! Jonathan in the APC means there will be no over-stealing in 2014 to fund elections in 2015. People will still embezzle here and there, quite alright, but not too much since there will be no serious contention at the presidential level where Nigeria’s politics is fiercest. Another plus to Nigerians is that there will be no post-election violence. In fact, our going out to vote will be to fulfil all righteousness. The level of desperation will be significantly reduced and we will all be one nation under the PDC/ APD (whichever)! Most importantly, there will be no undue expectations. We will all sit patiently till 2019 (or 2018). So, what’s left other than do the “needful”, (ah, that word has jumped out again this new year), just so we know where we are heading on time? So, President Jonathan, please do not waste time. This 2014 is your year! Don’t be shy. Go ahead and buy yourself a broom. Then, make that call to You-Know-Who just like in 2011. You know how it is done, you are no learner. Everybody will win at the end of the day. You are welcome. Happy New Year. And to all my readers, I wish you an eventful year. |
credits: neearo The year 2014 will doubtless have interesting moments but in terms of politicking, it will not be much different from 2010 or 2006 or any other pre-presidential election year. Unless, President Goodluck Jonathan joins the All Progressives Congress! Yes, you read right. It is a political move that is sure to benefit everyone. The first imagined beneficiary is Jonathan himself. Candidly, the bottom is dropping off his political ambition. He is not popular in the region monolithically termed “North” neither does he have many friends in the South-West. His South-South supporters have overplayed their hands and when they resort to their worn ethnic jingoism, everybody yawns. His South- East allies might stay with him but in a game of numbers, it might not go far. Informed deductions point to a heated and desperate 2014 for Jonathan. Worse, in the past few months, the crises in his current party — the Peoples Democratic Party — has spiralled to the point members are walking out without the fear that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will pursue them. If they get away with it, so to speak, it means more people might abandon the sinking PDP ship and crossover to the APC. The deprecation of the PDP – a party that publicly boasts it would remain in power for the next 100 years – is a bad omen for the President. Jonathan is, however, not totally knocked out. He has a few dynamics in his favour: Power of incumbency; his Simple Simon mien that enables him to look vulnerable (and pitiable) when necessary; and, his quickness to kneel down before every altar –spiritual and temporal. The last dynamic is a card that never fails to win over Nigerians. This year, every Jonathan’s speech will be all about God. Just watch out. As the PDP’s fortunes decline, that of the APC burgeons. Therefore, what option but for Jonathan himself to preempt the PDP’s cross- carpeting members by porting along with –or, even ahead of — them to the APC? To do so, he needs not give up the PDP entirely. He can manage the two parties successfully and nobody will notice any anomaly: one party is a gang of those who are currently “chopping” and the other is a mob who wants to replace them. Same difference. Jonathan only has to ask the Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, for his Polygamy of Politics blueprint and he will be fine. That’s all. |

ceo4eva: What a Way to End the Year 2013! I'm not surprised the statement is coming from the leader of the 'much touted Progressive Party'. APC claims to be on a 'rescue mission' but God needs to rescue us from such a Self-Seeking party first. May God see us through 2014. AMEN.if only you could define the bold |

The promise of the APC Mr. Tinubu said the APC offered Nigerians the choice to return the country to her best path, adding, “We realise the Nigerian public has been stung so many times by false promises that the people will not give their trust quickly. Given our political history, this is only wise and prudent.” He said the APC, in the New Year, would show the people the vast difference between it and the PDP. “They are a conservative and elite network of under-the-table deals and backroom governance. We are its open and progressive alternative. We mean the people well and do not work to keep them in the dark. We will show the comparative differences in several ways.” He explained that the party would demonstrate its commitment to democracy by exercising internal democracy and transparency on its deliberations and also communicate to the people at the grassroots level as well as the national level. “You will see and hear from APC members and leaders at the local, state and national levels. We will create venues and platforms that you may communicate your concerns to us as well. We will highlight the ideological and substantive policy differences between the progressive us and the elitist them. Where the PDP has imposed trickle-down economics reminiscent of a 1980’s Reagan- Thatcher-IMF road show, we seek an economy of genuine and broadly shared growth where the laboring wage earner and small businessperson benefits proportionally to the powerful financier and big corporate power.” http://premiumtimesng.com/news/152419-jonathan-running-robber-government-tinubu.html |
A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, has lamented the manner in which the Federal Government handled the alleged missing $11 billion (N1.7 trillion). The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Lamido Sanusi, had, in a recent letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, alleged that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, did not remit about $49 billion (N7.8 billion) to the government’s coffers. Mr. Lamido later recanted, saying only $11 billion was not returned. He explained that CBN did not capture the figures of the allocations to the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, and Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR. Mr. Tinubu said in its poor handling of the controversy, the government had portrayed itself as a “robber government,” that deserved to be swept out of power with the APC’s broom. He said the country had regrettably degenerated to the extent that losing such a huge amount had become a sign of fiscal rectitude. In a New Year message to Nigerians, Mr. Tinubu argued that in an atmosphere of good governance, the money should not be missing and if it happened to, senior officials of the government should by now be under criminal investigation by the police. “Under this administration, the matter is swept aside as if a minor thing, like a broken tea cup on the floor. If this government can treat a missing $11 billion like a minor accounting infraction, much more than a teacup needs to be swept away. This robber government needs to feel the broom and the sweep of change as well,” Mr. Tinubu said. Strange government Mr. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, also criticised President Goodluck Jonathan over his recent statement on the nation’s security challenges, which Mr. Tinubu stated showed no urgency or initiative. He recalled that the president told Nigerians during a church service on Christmas Day that Nigeria was not like Syria and other war-ravaged lands and as such they ought to be happy because things could be worse. “In the face of the nation’s greatest security challenge since the Civil War, this is the presidential policy: to lay low and measure your failure relative to the failure of other nations,” Mr. Tinubu said. “As long as other nations suffer conditions worse than ours, we should accept our fate and commend government for allowing only one of our legs to be amputated and not both. Jonathan’s hands-off and laissez faire approach to civil insurrect does not commend itself to national greatness or wise statecraft.” Mr. Tinubu said President Jonathan was promoting a lazy and dangerous policy. “This nation will not improve simply by being content that we are not as bad as other nations. That is not way of improvement. It is the excuse of a leader grown too comfortable with failure,” he said. Describing the Jonathan administration as a “strange government that resides in Abuja,” Mr. Tinubu expressed worry that it applauded itself for economic growth when the majority of people suffered caustic poverty. “The growth they commend is restricted to them and their cronies. The rest of the nation stagnates,” he said. “Children’s bellies swell not from feast but from near famine. Schools close. Businesses are shuttered. Jobs evaporate. The streets fill with the frustration of the unemployed and hopeless. Homes, stores and factories are dark. There is no light.” He noted that officials of the Jonathan administration believed they had taken Nigeria to the Promised Land and as such, intended to keep things as they were now. The former governor also alleged that the Jonathan administration believed the economy should be permanently structured in such a way that the vast majority of Nigerians squirmed under the boot of poverty while government officials relaxed in the nectar of luxury. “This is an unfair, crooked deal. We reject it and, as the drumbeat of change marches closer, it will drown out their lame excuses to make way for a fairer economy,” he stressed. A year of decision Stating that the advent of a new year was a time for people and nations to resolve themselves to a greater future, the APC leader said 2014 would present Nigerians a stark choice whether to remain were they were or to root for change. According to him, his party was floated as a vehicle to generate and accelerate the process of change towards the most beneficial end for the greatest number of Nigerians. “Nigerians must enter the New Year determined to succeed although much around us signals failure. As a nation, we are destined to be better than we now are. Today, we slump in a low place but that is only for now,” he said. “Our nation is crippled but not broken, confused but not lost. Given into the hands of enlightened progressive leadership, this nation can become a fertile land of prosperity, of law, of peace and dignity for us all.” He said the coming year would be one of decision; for change or against it. “Shall we continue as we now are? If so, failure will be our sole destination and darkness our only compass. As for me, I reject this end as well as the means that lead to it. We have gone far enough down the unlit road. We want no further part of it,” he said. |

Arsenal’s Manager, Arsène Wenger admits he is facing a potential injury crisis ahead of the New Year’s Day clash against Cardiff City , which striker Olivier Giroud will definitely miss because of an ankle problem. Midfielders Tomas Rosicky (calf) and Jack Wilshere (ankle) both face fitness tests later on Tuesday, as does England forward Theo Walcott , who picked up a shoulder problem in the 1-0 win at Newcastle. Full-back Kieran Gibbs definitely misses out because of a calf strain, while fellow defenders Nacho Monreal and Thomas Vermaelen have both been laid low by illness . Midfielder Aaron Ramsey is expected to be unavailable for around three weeks with the thigh problem suffered in the win at West Ham on Boxing Day, while German playmaker Mesut Özil is also sidelined, with the club awaiting results of a visit to a shoulder specialist. “You need a good memory because we have plenty of problems,” said Wenger, whose side head into 2014 top of the table by a point from Manchester City. Ramsey and Özil are out. Ramsey (for) three weeks and Özil has seen a specialist last night, I haven’t got a report yet. “We lost Gibbs at Newcastle with a calf strain. We have as well Monreal and Vermaelen, who are not sure to be ready because they come just back from illness, then we have uncertainty about Rosicky, Wilshere and Walcott. ”We lost Giroud on an ankle problem at Newcastle, so this morning will be more a medical check to see who will be available for tomorrow’s game.” Wenger, though, moved to allay any worries Giroud’s injury could be a long- term concern. “Olivier is a strong structure and he recovers quite quickly,” said Wenger of the France striker, whose second-half header secured victory at Newcastle to end his mini- goal drought. “He thinks he will be all right for Saturday, but the medical people think he will be a bit short. He is quite optimistic about it.” Wenger must decide whether to start Lukas Podolski, who scored on his return from a four-month injury lay-off at Upton Park, or Nicklas Bendtner in attack against the Bluebirds. “I have to see how I can balance the team because I have to consider as well who else is out and how can I get a balanced team out there,” he said. Wenger will measure up Arsenal‘s options ahead of the transfer window opening again on New Year’s Day. “We are like many clubs, we are certainly on alert if something special turns up we will not turn it down, but we are not as well desperate because we have a big depth in our squad,” the Arsenal boss said. “We have shown that because our midfield for example at West Ham and at Newcastle was completely different – we changed three players and we still managed to have a very strong team.” France international Giroud admits he would “rather not see a new striker come in” next month. Wenger, though, maintains Arsenal are not looking to replace their 11-goal forward, rather offer him support. “Would you expect anything different from a striker?” said Wenger when asked what he thought of Giroud’s comments to French TV. “I believe we have to give him credit for one thing, that physically he has coped with it until now in a remarkable way and with a fantastic combative attitude. I don’t know if we will do something or not (in January), but it is not to replace Olivier Giroud – we have a great confidence in Olivier Giroud.” |
