Scientist at the Gladstone Institutes have identified the precise chain of molecular events in the human body that drives the death of most of the immune system’s CD4 T cells as an HIV infection leads to AIDS.

Further, they have identified an existing anti-inflammatory drug that in laboratory tests blocks the death of these cells — and now are planning a Phase 2 clinical trial to determine if this drug or a similar drug can prevent HIV-infected people from developing AIDS.

Two separate journal articles, published simultaneously in Nature and Science, detail the research from the laboratory of Dr. Warner C. Greene, who directs virology and immunology research at Gladstone, an independent biomedical-research nonprofit.

His lab’s Science paper reveals how, during an HIV infection, a protein known as IFI16 senses fragments of HIV DNA in abortively infected immune cells. This triggers the activation of the human enzyme caspase-1 and leads to pyroptosis, a fiery and highly inflammatory form of cell death.
As revealed in Nature, this repetitive cycle of abortive infection, cell death, inflammation and recruitment of additional CD4 T cells to the infection “hot zone” ultimately destroys the immune system and causes AIDS.

“Gladstone has showed how the body’s own immune response to HIV causes CD4 T cell death via a pathway triggering inflammation, and secondly by identifying the host DNA sensor that detects the viral DNA and triggers this death response,” said Dr. Robert F. Siliciano, a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. “This one-two punch of discoveries underscores the critical value of basic science — by uncovering the major cause of CD4 T cell depletion in AIDS, Dr. Greene’s lab has been able to identify a potential new therapy for blocking the disease’s progression and improving on current antiretroviral medications.”

The Lagos State Government on
Sunday said it had spent N1billion to
support no fewer than 400 graduate
farmers to set up their own farms.
Mr Gbolahan Lawal, Commissioner for
Agriculture and Co-operatives, told the
News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Lagos
that the beneficiaries were those trained
under the state’s Agricultural Youths
Empowerment Scheme(AGRIC-YES).
“The support is to give them a
headstart in their farming businesses.
“We are currently operating a modern
farm settlement scheme in Araga, Epe
area of Lagos, where graduates are
trained in different areas of agriculture
under our AGRIC-YES programme.
“No fewer than 400 graduates, divided
into four groups, are being exposed to
practical and sustainable ways of
practising aquaculture, poultry and crop
cultivation, among others, using
modern, fully automated equipment,” he
said.
The commissioner said that the
essence of the programme was to
create a generation of modern farmers,
while creating job opportunities and
promoting food security.
“In the last one year, the state
government has spent more than
N1billion in form of inputs, tractors,
cash and other essentials, to enable the
graduates set up their own farms,” he
said.
Lawal said that the programme was
fully residential, adding that the
government only recently inaugurated
200 units of two-bedroom apartments
at the programme site, to improve the
living standards of participants.
He said that the state government was
committed to the food security of the
state, saying that AGRIC YES was one
of the efforts of government to
demonstrate that.
Lawal noted that Lagos was a top
producer of poultry and that the
government was assisting farmers to
boost poultry production.
“Maize is one of the major ingredients
used in poultry feed mill and in order to
ensure that farmers have all year supply
of this ingredient for their animals, the
government sells directly to them at
subsidised prices.
“We have a poultry estate in Erikorodo
in Ikorodu and the government is
upgrading facilities and even providing
more to boost production,” “he said.
Lawal said that government was also
assisting fishermen in coastal
communities of Ojo, Badagry and other
parts, with boats and other inputs
needed in their fishing business.
The Commissioner added that the state
government had recently acquired land
in Osun and Abuja for livestock and

Former Minister of the Federal Capital
Territory, Mallam Nasir El Rufai, has
revealed that Pastor Tunde Bakare, the
General Overseer of the Latter Rain
Assembly, turned down a cow, which
was reportely sent to him for Christmas
by President Jonathan.
In a tweet posted on Sunday, El Rufai
wrote: “Just learnt that GEJ sent a
Christmas cow to Pastor Bakare, but
Pastor asked – is it cow we need in
Nigeria? Nigerians want good
governance!”
It is believed that Pastor Bakare made
this known to his congregation, as
moments before then, El Rufai tweeted:
“On my way Latter Rain Assembly to
see my egbon, Pastor Tunde Bakare, by
God’s Grace….” and later told his
followers that, “Inside Latter Rain,
Pastor Tunde Bakare praying for peace,
stability and unity of Nigeria in
2014….that our nation gets capable
leaders…”
It is public knowledge that the president
and the fiery man of God do not go
along well, so it comes as a surprise

The incident occurred at about 9.45am at Ewu,
in Edo Central Senatorial District, when a
Peugeot J5 Bus filled with tomatoes and
plantains apparently lost control and rammed
into the Governor's Flag Car from the opposite
direction before swerving into a roadside ditch.
Three vehicles in the Governor's convoy were in
front of the Governor's Flag Car and had
passed the Peugeot J5 Bus before it [J5 Bus]
had direct impact with the Governor's car,
which had the Governor, his Aide-De-Camp
[ADC] and his Driver as occupants.
The Governor's Car was badly affected but both
occupants of the Peugeot J5 Bus and that of
the Governor's sustained no injuries.
The Peugeot J5 Bus was following a truck that
was descending the Ewu Slope when it
suddenly veered off into the Governor's lane
from the opposite direction and directly
impacted on the Governor's vehicle, apparently
because of brake failure.
Fortunately, none of the passengers in both
vehicles sustained injuries. The Comrade
Governor is hale and hearty, his ADC and other
occupants of the Peugeot J5 are also in good
condition.
The incident has been reported to the
Divisional Police Station at Ewu for further
investigation. This is to assure all good people
of Edo State that there is no cause for alarm.
Their loving Comrade Governor is fine, hale and
hearty as well as other occupants of the other
affected vehicle. The Comrade Governor is
wishing everyone a prosperous new year

A cow with five legs has been hailed a miracle
because when pregnant women touch its fifth
hoof they give birth to baby boys.
Raj Pratap's three-year-old male calf, called
Raju, now is a star in Raipur, India, since a
woman with four daughters touched the
animal's fifth hoof and begged for her next
child to be a boy.
The woman delivered twin boys in February
this year, word soon spread that the calf's fifth
leg. Raju's anomaly a very rare condition which
affects just one in every five million cows.
Since news got out about the fifth leg, Mr
Pratap, a cattle herder, has been swamped by
pregnant women who pay to touch the hoof
with 30 women so far stumping up around 500
rupees, around £5, for the privilege.
All the 30 women delivered boys. The owner of
the cow is so confident of his 'miracle calf' that
he offers refunds if the baby born is a girl.
On December 23, the cow celebrated its 33rd
victory, after the woman who touched its
'magical hoof' gave birth to triplets….all of
them boys.
It should be pointed out that in India boys are
'more valued' than girls as they have 'greater
earning potential' to support the family.
