''oh i didn't?'' He laughed uneasily. ''let's just say that i saw it coming''. ''oh'' she bought his explaination ''and?'' ''and what?'' ''what do you think about it?'' she asked. ''well its totally the mother's choice. Am sure she has a really good reason for it''. Mrs shola smiled in admiration. She had always known him to be very understanding both in work and when it had to do with family. ''there's a slight problem though'' the smile vanished from her face. ''what is it?'' ''he wants to adopt junior'' ''who?'' ''kelvin''. His laughter rose with time. He placed his palm over his mouth to curb the sound. It didn't work. He laughed hard as he looked to the floor like he intended to roll on it. ''sorry'' he said when he managed to stop laughing. ''its just so funny''. ''right?'' mrs shola said in delight. She knew that if he didn't agree to it,then there was no way kelvin could go through with it alone. ''right''. Am sure he just said that out of confusion. He can barely take care of himself let alone a child''. ''that's what i thought'' she smiled a little. ''but it had bummi so worried''. Alex stood from his chair and walked towards her. He stopped in front of her and sat on the table faced her. ''adeola''. He hardly called her by the fullname. ''don't worry,i will handle my son'' he said softly as he placed his hand on top of hers. She must had been so distracted not to have noticed his hand carressing hers slowly. When she finally noticed, she look at him in surprise but did not withdraw her hands. Neither of them spoke. He just continued to play with her hands and was really immensed in it until the door flung open |
Indications emerged on Saturday that the United States has been spying on the Nigeria’s security agencies, especially the State Security Service, and probably the Presidency. In a report published inNew York Times, Edward Snowden, an American computer specialist, who worked for the US Central Intelligence Agency and as a contractor with the US National Security Agency, stated that Nigeria’s SSS was one of the security agencies across the globe that the N.S.A. had been listening in on. He said briefs on the information gleaned from intercepting of telephone conversations and hacking of computers of the SSS, other security agencies in Nigeria and other countries are delivered to the office of the US President, Barrack Obama every morning. “By many accounts, the agency provides more than half of the intelligence nuggets delivered to the White House early each morning in the President’s Daily Brief — a measure of success for American spies. One document boasts that listening in on Nigerian State Security Service had provided items for the briefing “nearly two dozen” times. In every international crisis, American policy makers look to the N.S.A. for inside information,” Snowden toldNew York Times. The release of documents that proved that the NSA had been eavesdropping on the communications of world leaders, including US allies, had caused diplomatic rows, with Germany and some other countries protesting. Snowden also noted that the NSA had obtained thousands of classified documents, containing secrets of governments around the world, pointing to a possibility that it might have obtained secret documents of the Federal Government of Nigeria, or tapped President Goodluck Jonathan’s phone conversations. Snowden, who is on a temporary political asylum in Russia, disclosed classified details of several top-secret United States, Israeli, and British government mass surveillance programmes to the press. He started releasing the NSA’s documents in June and the documents he has released so far show that the US has been spying most countries in the world. Mrs shola was too stunned to laugh or fret. She knew his type. They tagged them the fanatics but none had ever threatened her for turning down a case. None but mr chris. ''am sorry Ade,i just couldn't handle him'' alex said as he walked into his office and strolled back to his seat. ''hope he didn't bother you much?'' he smiled. ''it's over,i took care of it'' she feigned a smile. ''good'' so what's up? It's not everyday you walk into my office first thing in the morning. What's the matter?'' ''it's about kelvin'' she said lowly. ''what about my son?'' ''have he told you anything as regards junior?'' she asked carefully. ''of course he tells me things about my grandson'' alex smiled at the sound of that. He was barely forty years old and was already a grandfather. ''i mean lately. Have he told you anything lately?'' ''not that i remember. What's this about, Ade?'' she looked down to her toes for a moment and sighed. She raised her head towards him and cleared her throat. ''Bummi wants to put him up for adoption'' ''oh!'' he said dramatically but not surprised. Mrs shola squinted her eyes in suspicion as she observed him. He tried to act shock but she was too good a lawyer to know that he wasn't. ''did you know about it? She asked unsure. ''nooo'' he emphasized. ''this is the first am hearing of it'' ''you didn't seem surprise''. He shrugged uncomfortably. |
''for?'' ''for damages of course'' he frowned. ''it's time for justice to prevail'' ''but sir, damages for what?'' ''first of,please call me chris. Look around you mrs-?'' ''shola'' ''right. Mrs shola, look around you. Cars are getting damaged everyday. Some to the point of no repair. Accidents from every angle. Delays. Do you have any idea of how many contracts i have missed due to traffic, caused by our roads? Have you ever missed a court appointment before?'' she nodded no. ''well lucky you. Not everyone is as lucky but they say we create our own destiny. Let's do this!'' he said in childish awe. ''i understand you mr chr-.... Chris. But you can't force the government to repair roads. No court of law can''. ''who said anything about forcing them to repair the roads? They must pay in cash for the damages or go to jail'' ''they can't go to jail sir,the-'' ''then i guess cash would have to do then. Justice must be served for the common man'' ''paying every person in the state?'' ''every living thing''. Now she believed he was mad. ''that's impossible chris'' ''anything is possible, didn't they teach you that in law school? I just need you to take the case. Fight for us and be a hero''. His eyes pleaded heavily. ''i can't. Am sorry'' ''can't or won't. Miss shola'' ''it's mrs'' she corrected. ''whatever'' he eyed her ''and we say the government won't help us. We won't even help ourselves. Just look at you! What's wrong with this generation?'' ''i don't get you. Sir'' ''why will you?'' he stood from his chair and walked towards the door. He stopped at the door and turned face mrs shola. ''i will deal with you!'' he walked out. |

The United States spy program had no boundaries until the leaks started, as the US National Security Agency allegedly eavesdropped on cardinals before March conclave to elect new pope, Italian magazine claims. “The National Security Agency wire-tapped the pope,” the magazine said, accusing the United States of listening in to telephone calls to and from the Vatican, including cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio before he was elected Pope Francis. The allegations follow a report on surveillance website, Cryptome, which said the US intercepted 46 million telephone calls in Italy in December last year and early January this year. Among those, “there are apparently also calls from and to the Vatican”, Panorama said. “It is feared that the great American ear continued to tap prelates’ conversations up to the eve of the conclave,” it said, adding that there were “suspicions that the conversations of the future pope may have been monitored”. Bergoglio “had been a person of interest to the American secret services since 2005, according to Wikileaks”, it said. The bugged conversations were divided into four categories: “leadership intentions”, “threats to financial systems”, “foreign policy objectives” and “human rights”, it claimed. Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said “we have heard nothing of this and are not worried about it”. If true, the US spying would be an embarrassing blow to an institution famous for its secrecy. The goings-on of the conclave are particularly clock-and-dagger, with a system installed in the Sistine chapel where the cardinals meet in order to scramble any mobile phone communications and excommunication for those who spill the beans. The latest spying claims come amid a huge diplomatic row over the revelation that the phone records of millions were tapped in many countries across Euope that included several heads of the state. On Monday, Spain summoned the US ambassador to discuss alleged spying on its citizens and said that, if true, the action was unacceptable behaviour by an ally. Germany and France had also taken similar steps. http://www.informationng.com/2013/10/us-spied-on-vatican-while-making-the-choice-of-a-new-pope.html |
Bayelsa State Government on Wednesday demolished a one-storey private building owned by Governor Seriake Dickson because it obstructed the Right-of-Way as well as intruding on the state Capital City Master Plan. . The demolished building, which had been marked by the Capital City Development Authority on June 28, 2012, was situated along the Opolo/AIT Road, Yenagoa, the state capital. The demolition, which began about 12.48 pm, was supervised by the Deputy Governor John Jonah; Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Lawrence Ehwrudjakpor; Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Markson Fefegha; Commissioner for State Capital City Development; and Mr. Konugha Zuwa. Other structures affected by the demolition exercise included that of the Director General of the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, Dr. Temple Iluma. Jonah told journalists that the location of the Governor’s house obstructed the Right-of-Way, hence there would be no compensation for him. He said, “In line with the development control of the CCDA and urban renewal of the state, the government awarded contract for the dualisation of the road. Anyone who has built structures on the Right-of-Way should expect such buildings to be demolished. “We have been talking about the master plan as well as some areas where we have to carry out urban renewal. For the master plan, we expect every builder to go and get clearance before he or she starts to build to see the extent that he can go outside the road. “One of the houses we have found to have interfered with the plan of Yenagoa is this one-storey structure belonging to the Governor. On the advice of the CCDA that is concerned with development control of the state, the house was marked since last year for demolition. And you know we have awarded contract for the dualisation of the Opolo Road.” However, some Yenagoa residents on Wednesday said the exercise was politically-motivated, notwithstanding that the governor’s house was affected. The residents, who claimed that only a section of Dickson’s building was demolished, said the exercise was a strategy to enable the government to demolish buildings of perceived opponents without causing public outrage. None of the complaining residents however agreed to be quoted. In his comment, Ehwrudjakpor said the demolition had been on for some time and listed the affected areas to include Ovom, Igbogene, Imgbi, Diete_Spiff and Eradiri road expansion. http://www.punchng.com/news/right-of-way-bayelsa-demolishes-dicksons-private-home/ |

It sounded like a compliment but the expression on his face suggested otherwise. He seemed like spartacus when he was out for blood. ''if you say so sir'' mrs shola tried not to smile. She had gotten used to new clients dishing her compliments as such all thanks to her boss. He always sold her out to whoever cared to listen. Even in court cases,he would make high stakes on her because he always believed in her judgement and she almost never disappointed. ''well to business'' mr chris popped out his eyes like they were about to attack. ''the federal government gets all the money in the world. I don't even want to get started on them now. My concern is our state government that get billions monthly from allocation and taxes. Yet every state road is like an old widow'' he starred deeply at mrs shola eyes. ''yes?'' she prompted him to continue. He was starting to give her the creeps. After what seemed like foreve,he moved his gaze from her and continued. ''so i want to suee the state government. I want to sue the state!'' |

It was a bee hive of activities at Alex and associates. The screaming voices of lawyers talking over the phone could be heard from all the cardinal points. Mrs shola walked in on her boss laughing uncontrollably from his seat. The man sitted across from him was obviously not in the same jovial mood. His expression showed that he probably felt insulted by Alex's conduct but he kept his cool. ''Adeola please join us'' her boss gestured for her to sit. She moved towards the free seat beside the visitor, pulled the chair and sat. ''morning boss'' she smiled. ''morning Ade. Thank God you are here. I have been waiting for you all morning'' he said genuinely. ''our potential client here wants to sue the government''. ''oh! That's huge'' she said,a little surprised. It was not everyday law firms got cases on the government but that was not to say they never got any. They received from farmers, traders, civil societies but at the end of the day,it becomes but a wide chase because you can arrest the government with the police. The government own the police. ''mr chris, she's all yours'' Alex grinned as he got up from his chair and excused himself out of this office. Mrs shola watched helplessly as her boss walked out of sight. One voice in her head said to go after him and pull him back to the office. The other said to sit back and speak briefly with the visitor. Either ways, she knew nothing reasonable would come out of the discussion. ''so i hear you are one of the finest lawyers around'' mrs chris said. |

''what just happened?'' patience broke the akward silence that lingered a while. ''what?'' bummi asked. ''i thought you said you guys were talking again. So what was that? You guys even look worse than previously on love gone wrong'' ''long story,i will tell you later'' bummi made to leave. ''stop right there missy. You are going no where until you tell what is going on''. Bummi bit her lips. She knew protesting was useless. Patience was not going to let her go. ''i told him,we are about to give Junior up for adoption. Or ronke did anyways''. ''what! And what!'' patience jaw dropped opened. ''bummi, you didn't tell me any of these even after all those time we had been chatting. Not fair''. Patience frowned for a moment. ''am sorry. I just didn't want to talk about it. Forgive me?'' she pleaded. ''okay'' patience smiled. ''so how did he react?'' ''unprecedented. He said he was going to adopt junior''. ''uh-oh! That's not cool'' patience cried. ''he stands a better chance to do that. That's of course if his dad agrees to it''. Bummi's mood went totally dark as she heard the last word from patience's mouth. ''don't worry am sure your parents will figure something out. Just relax okay?'' patience comforted. ''i really hope so. I can't lose Junior. Not to kelvin'' bummi said bitterly. ''you won't''. Patience reassured. ''so what are you going to do now?'' ''i have no idea'' |

''they are saying you deserve to be senior prefect'' phew! Bummi felt the cold breeze erode her face. It felt like she had just started breathing. ''really? Me,head girl?'' she asked excitedly. ''yeah. I think you deserve it too'' ''that's sweet. Thanks'' bummi beamed with a smile. ''but i think we both know that's not going to happen''. ''why not?'' ''come on,you know why'' ''i don't. Please tell me'' patience said in a dramatic way. ''okay there goes nothing. I acted irresponsibly, had sex and got pregnant'' she paused to ensure her friend was following. ''not exactly the model student now,am i?'' ''hmm...'' patience heaved. ''that bad?'' bummi stood stunned. ''i never thought i would see this day. Patience speechless''. ''you made a mistake, yes. But it was in the past. No one has the right to crucify you for that unless the hypocrates of course. You should beat yourself about it either,it could give you wrinkles'' she scoffed. ''very funny''. Bummi smiled. ''but thanks anyways shrink'' she teased. ''even if what happened hadn't happened,i would still have miss perfect to contend with and no one could defeat her''. ''who's miss perfect? Ronke?'' ''hell no! That's miss bitchy'' they laughed. ''am talking about alicia. The amazing alicia'' she said dreamily. ''It's fourteen years remember?'' patience said as she tapped her slightly on the shoulder. ''What is?'' ''nothing. Nevermind'' she smiled. ''Back to the matter,al-'' ''open and close'' Bummi interupted playfully. She got a glare from patience. ''sorry'' she stopped smiling. ''Alicia is too good to be true. Am very sure more than half of the student body wouldn't want her to become senior prefect''. ''Hmmm, who even said i was contesting?'' Bummi's nose shone as she spoke. ''aren't you?'' patience asked,a little alarmed. ''am i?'' Bummi teased. ''of course you are. I have your posters already. Poster atleast'' ''you what?'' As they spoke, kelvin walked passed them with a friend. Few metres ahead of them,he turne d to steal a look at them. His eyes caught bummi's. He turne d away abruptly and walked briskly until he was out of sight. |

*** several groups of teenagers tropped into the compound of saint theresa high school. It was the first day of resumption which accounted for the buzzing of activities around the school. The old students beamed as they saw their classmates for the first time in a long time. New students mostly looked confused except for those who came with their parents or an older accomplice. ''Bummi!...'' bummi heard her name as she stepped her foot through the gateline. She remembered what the gateline. She remembered what her school mother had told her the previous session. If someone called your name the moment you entered the school compound on the first day of school, the you are sure to have a memorable session which was exactly what bummi prayed for considering the fact that it was not everyday a senior student became a mother. ''bummi.... '' she smiled as she recognized the voice. It had to be her bestfriend patience except it was a clone and a perfect one at that because patience possessed a unique voice. It was one in a million. ''helo ma'am'' patience said as she caught up with bummi. ''i have heard your name more than once today. Every one is talking about you''. Bummi's heart skipped. She had hoped that no one would remember she got pregnant and was now a mum. It was her worst nightmare. Something she played over and over in her head. She knew how teenagers could be. They would crucify you even without a cross. ''what are they saying?'' Bummi asked shakily. |

*** ''He said he was going to adopt junior'' Bummi had been ranting about her conversation with kelvin of the previous day and even dinner wasn't spared. ''Bum.. No talking at the dining'' her mother rebuked her. ''but did he really say so?'' she inquired. ''he did. Can he do that? Adopt junior. Would he be allowed?'' bummi restrained herself from pouring out every question in her head. She waited for a reply from her mother, she didn't get any. They ate in silence and the parents were even more relieved when dinner ended. Mr shola made to leave hastily when the table had been cleared of the dishes. He sat back when he saw the glaring eyes of the women on the table. He cleared his throat uneasily, looked at his watch. He couldn't come u with a lie that could get him off the hot seat when he needed it. ''okay, let's talk'' he gave up looking for an escape route. ''i know we are all tense right now. We never expected this twist but what can we do now,but deal with it?''. He smiled inwardly. He felt proud of himself. ''now, what's the problem?'' no one responded. ''you want to give junior up for adoption'' Bummi raised her eyebrows at him. He was the one who pushed her the most to see it through. ''and now the father of the child want to adopt his son,i don't see anything wrong with that''. He didn't see the damage he had caused until he was done. Now he could almost see x-ray heat targeted at him. He bent his head innocently and stopped talking. ''alright'' mrs shola knew she had to take over the mic. ''junior is not going with kelvin, okay? You girls go to school,i will sort this out with his father at work'' she feigned a smile perfectly. ''am pretty sure his father knows nothing about it. Maybe he just said it impulsively''. Bummi got an ounce of hope from her mother's words. She didn't know what the future held in stock but she believed her mother. ''how did he even hear about it so quicky?'' mr shola asked.... *** |
