Nairaland General › Meet Power Mike Of NENI: Africa's Only World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion Ever by DickDastardly(op): 11:21am On Feb 05, 2015
Michael Okpala (August 8, 1939 – March 11, 2004), also known as "Power Mike", was a household name in the world of Nigerian and African wrestling, a retired undefeated World Heavyweight wrestling champion

Early life

Power Mike was born as Michael Okpala on the 8th of August, 1939 to Echeobi and Janet Okpala at Neni, in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra Statein the eastern part of Nigeria. He was the first born of a family of three. When he reached elementary school age, he was enrolled into the Anglican Primary School at Adazi-Enu, a neighbouring town to Neni. It was at this primary school that he started building his athletic career by being active in sporting events. He was so interested in boxing that he became an amateur boxer. After finishing primary school in 1952, he left his village for Onitsha, in order to learn how to organise and run a trade business. At Onitsha, he joined the Dick Tiger Boxing Club as a middle weight amateur boxer. It was here that Dick Ihetu Tiger became his role model. On leaving Onitsha, he left for Kano to specialize in the business of buying and selling tyres. During an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic he realized his dream. This realization sparked his rebirth and he acquired a new name, Power Mike.

Power Mike

While in Kano in northern Nigeria, he started a superman show business which made him popular locally. His imaginitive exhibitions in Kano virtually cast a spell on people from various social backgrounds because they were yearning to see him perform. Showmanship took him around the world in the mid-50's. His act included such feats as using his bare hands to bend a six-inch nail, lifting four heavy men with ease, engaging several men in a game of tug-of-war, using bare hands to break a coconut and so on.In 1961, he started a nation wide tour which took him to Onitsha, Enugu, Aba, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Jos and Kaduna. In 1964, Power Mike went to Ghana and his performances there were a tremendous success. He later toured Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal before he found his way into Europe in 1967, accompanied by his friend Engr. Onyeso, the Igwe of Nri. He got a one year contract in Sweden after which he went to Greece. It was there that he became a wrestler.

Wrestling

A wrestling promoter saw him performing as a superman in Greece and took interest in him. He was trained by Kalie Abdulkalie of Lebanon. Initially, he did not like the brutality in wrestling. However, he later became an acclaimed wrestler and one of the best that Greece could boast of at the time. When he left Greece, he went back to Britain to compete, and thus he truly started his career as a wrestler. He came back to Africa in 1970 and in the same year he defeated Gambia's Massambula to become the African heavyweight wrestling champion and titleholder. He wrestled with and defeated Ali Baba of Lebanon in 1973. Johnny Kwango also became a victim of Power Mike's when he (Mike) defeated him in Lagos. Among the list of wrestlers that Power Mike defeated were Power Jack, Joseph Kovacs, Judd Harris, John Tiger of Canada and a host of other notable worldwide superstars.Apart from his pro wrestling prowess, he was also a promoter of the sport and his Power Mike International Promotions brought foreign wrestlers like Mil Mascaras, Dick the 'Bulldog Brower', Buddy Rose, Michael Hayes, Mighty Igor, The Mongols, Carlos Colon, Chris Adams, Thunderbolt Williams and so on to the shores of Nigeria. He retired from active wrestling in 1976 and then focused on international promotions.Michael Okpala died on 11 March 2004 at the National Hospital, Abuja after a protracted illness.

Nairaland General › Buhari Campaign Organisation Bribed Muslim Imams In The North With N8billion! by DickDastardly(op): 7:18am On Feb 05, 2015
How senseless and callous does this topic sound? Since we have thrown decorum and decency to the dogs in the name of an election where whoever wins between Buhari and Jonathan is still a Nigerian and must remain accountable to Nigerians, kindly permit me to join the bandwagon of senselessness.
Since one doesnt need to present facts or evidence in allegations anymore in my country, here is my contribution to the rounds of gossip being peddled carelesslessly lately.

This muslim imams have sold their soul for a pot of porridge and how ridiculous of them. This bribery was made by no other persons than Tinubu and Amaechi (who has rendered river state account empty for the APC wishful schemings) to the hungry imams.
This is infact in sharp contrast with the expectations of allah and the teachings of his prophet. This is highly condemnable. And the imams involved should all return the ill gotten bribe money or face the wrath of alla. How can they stoop so low? They must remain neutral in political matters. And not receiving money from Buhari's men to be using the various mosques accross the nation to preach against and incite violence against GEJ voters.
All well meaning Nigerians must join hands to condemn this dastardly act by Buhari.

Note: Dickdastardly is reknown muslim scholar! cool

You are as dumb as your master gej, didn't you hear when a PDP governor, Yuguda said it is PDP members that are attacking gej. Imagine, even PDP members hate him. Jonathan plotted the bomb blast in Gombe to implicate opposition. Tell me why someone that is winning already will want to kill the President and lose his chance. If Jonathan dies Sambo becomes president and no more elections so tell me who benefits from Jonathan s death. You are so dumb lol

Nairaland General › In Total Support Of Alhaji Mujaheed Asari Dokubo - Dickdastardly by DickDastardly(op): 10:55pm On Feb 04, 2015
He has said nothing wrong. All he said was that "for every violent action there will be a reaction". Buhari campaigned freely in the south. Not as if we wouldnt want to stone him, but that's not how we role in the southside. Now, why the harassment of the president upnorth? And no one really sees the dangers or criminality in attemping to assasinate the president in the north, when he has only come to campaign peacefully like buhari did in the south. Can't people wait to vote against him come 14th rather than resorting to violence? Would-be jonathan voters in the north are already relocating due to this violence, harassment and intimidation targetted at them, and to think they'd be disenfranchised once out of the north.
The rigging of this election has already started and we are still talking about credible election. Who's fooling who? How will Jonathan get the required percentage of votes in the north when all his would-be voters must have fled in fear. Why the quick resort to violence by the north in almost all situations where its unnecessary?
Lets all first condemn the harassment and intimidation in the north before hanging Asari. If we wont, lets all be ready for the zero hour, as i am sure this guys dont play with words. Its only the gullible and rookies that wont see nigeria on the tight ropes right now.
Will it happen? Keep fooling yourselves that he's blabing till the last drop of oil leaves the pipeline. The time for one Nigeria is now. And the time to call for peace is now. Every Nigerian should be allowed to enjoy that freedom of speech, association and movement in our constitution and by implication be free to campaign or vote where ever he or she chooses. Anything outside that in Anarchy. And if this condition is not favourable to you, then you want war. And if you want war, SO LET IT BE cool

Errrrrm.......you seem not to get it. Why should oil continue to flow from NigerDelta if their son is harassed out of office in this violent manner you are celebrating? Why cant you people wait till feb 14 to express your selves with your voters card? If this trend of intimidation of people with contrary political leaning continues, i only see a Nigeria with zero oil output soonest and i will love it cause its time we give meaning to one Nigeria. Its now or never. Vote out GEJ and we will all be fine, but harass him out of office and our oil will go caboom. Just try to remember this post when the thunders start clapping. Savvy? cool
