Nigeria to buy attack helicopters from South Africa, others – Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, yesterday disclosed that the Nigerian army might soon procure the [size=14pt]South Africa (SA) made Rooivalk attack helicopters[/size] or any other deemed okay for the full take off of the newly introduced Army Aviation Corps.
General Buratai said this yesterday at the opening of the COAS First Quarter Conference 2016 that held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers Mess, Abuja.
The army chief, while reviewing the progress made under his command, especially since the last COAS Quarterly Conference, said the introduction of the NAAC was amongst the numerous innovations recently introduced to make the army a more professionally responsive body.
On the procurement of befitting helicopters to enable the full takeoff of the NAAC project, the COAS said the army had compiled a list of platforms from Russia, America and Chinese origins which include their simulator and UAVs. He however noted that emphasis was made on Russian-made Mi-17 due to its “ruggedness, operability and multi-role capability.”
“Different contractors submitted their proposals for supply which are still being considered. Recently the NA also considered the South Africa (SA) made Rooivalk attack helicopters after witnessing a demonstration in SA on the capability and employability”.
According to him the take off of the NAA is one project that is very dear to him.
“One project that is dear to me is the takeoff of the Nigeria Army Aviation”, Buratai said. ...

Saudi Arabia and Oman have both announced that they are setting up munitions production facilities.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on 27 March that an arms factory had been opened in the central city of Al-Kharj by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman al-Saud, who serves as the kingdom's defence minister, and South Africa's President Jacob Zuma.

The SPA said the factory will operate under Saudi Arabia's Military Industries Corporation and was built with the help of the South African company Rheinmetall Denel, which had been paid approximately USD240 million for its services.

The factory will produce aircraft bombs up to 2,000 lb in size; 155 mm and 105 mm artillery shells; and 120 mm, 81 mm, and 60 mm mortar bombs.

relations and open new avenues for partnership.
The visit came at a time of frequent frictions
between Nigerians living in South Africa and their
South African locals, usually triggered by the
xenophobia.
He acknowledged that South African business
concerns had increased their presence in Nigeria
to “more than 120”, up from just four in 1994.
Zuma stated that, as the two leading economies
in Africa, Nigeria and South Africa could partner
to improve the lot of the continent and free its
people from the economic pressures coming from
outside its territories.
He cited electricity generation, agriculture,
aviation and solid minerals as among a whole lot
of areas that the two could partner for further
economic improvement.
“South-South and Inter-Africa cooperation is a
way of repositioning our current economic
challenges in Africa”, he added.
Zuma offered that South Africa could assist
Nigeria in its bid to diversify the economy by
bringing South African expertise in mining into the
country’s solid minerals’ sector.
He also said the two countries must be sensitive
to new technological and industrial advancement in
parts of the world to “develop Africa’s economy.”
