Actor Fred died on May 17, 2016 from a kidney related disease which plagued him for a year and left him bed-ridden. He loved to play elderly roles in Nollywood films.

2. Veteran Actor, Festus Aguebor.

Veteran Nollywood actor, Festus Aguebor, died on February 23, 2016. His cause of death was undisclosed and was a shock to all his fans. He was known for his roles in Igbodo and Family contract. He is believed to have been in his 70s.

1. Veteran actress, Bukky Ajayi (82).

Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Ajayi died on July 6, 2016 after an unsuccessful battle with heart-related issues. Her big break into Nollywood was her role in the Village Headmaster in the 70s. In March 2016, the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) awarded her with the 2016 ‘Industry Merit Award’.

2016 has been a year of emotional turbulence in Nollywood. Actors have received awards, recognized internationally, engaged, married and re-married but sadly, lives have been lost along the way.


With just 3 months till 2017, over 10 Nollywood favourites have passed away, dating as early as January.

The Rivers state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has faulted the poll result released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the just concluded governorship election in Edo state.

The party in a statement by the publicity secretary of PDP in the state, Mr Nwanosike Sam, over the weekend in Port Harcourt, accused INEC of manipulating the Edo poll in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Vanguard, the party spokesperson alleged that the result finally released by INEC on the election did not tally with what was collated at most of the polling units in Edo state.

He warned that such alleged irregularity will not be tolerated in the coming re-run elections in Rivers state.

The party said: “The result that was announced in Edo State did not correspond with the results collated from most of the polling units. We commend former President Jonathan for showing Nigerians that he could supervise a credible election. As an opposition party candidate, the outgoing governor of Edo State won an election conducted by the PDP. But today, they will not allow the will of the people in that state to prevail.”

The PDP called on INEC to fix a date for the re-run elections in Rivers State, but warned that the people will resist any attempt by the electoral body to announce result for Tai local government area of the state.

It said no re-run election took place there in the last March 19 re-run election.

Nwanosike Sam later admitted about 1,500 members of the APC in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, who decamped to the PDP.

Meanwhile, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the recently concluded Edo state election has opened up after his loss.

Ize-Iyamu who spoke with Vanguard after his defeat by Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has now said he is committing his counterparts into the hands of God.

While thanking the people of the state for pouring out en masse to vote their choice candidate, the clergyman stated that the result of the election has brought gloom and sadness to the people of the state, but that he would not want anyone to take laws into their hands.

There was a mild drama in Enugu state on Sunday, October 2, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium as Rangers claimed a seventh Nigerian league title after beating El-Kanemi Warriors in 3 – 0 in their last game of the season.

The drama started at half-time break after a group of young Igbo youths were moving round with Ogene music when two of them were seen displaying Biafran flag.

Their action provoked security officers within the stadium who moved towards the young men holding the flag and attempted to snatch it from them.

However, the security operative’s action was greeted with extreme repugnance from the fans in the stadium which forced them to let the two men walk away with their flags.

– Some soldiers are said to have invaded two communities – Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh – in Delta state over crisis in the area

– Residents from the communities are also moving away for fear of intimidation or harassment by the soldiers


Some soldiers of the Nigerian military are said to have stormed communities in Delta state in search of militants, Daily Post reports.

The invasion of the soldiers in Aladja and Ogbe-Ijoh communities in Udu and Warri South-West Local Government Areas of Delta state have reportedly caused tension in the area.

This situation, residents said arose after a continued land dispute between the communities.

Some of the residents are said to be moving out with the families for fear of intimidation or brutalization by the soldiers.

It also said the crisis between the two communities was aggravated after the invasion of some armed youth from Aladja on Friday, June 3.

A resident of the community, Ighotegulor Bezi said the Delta state government is responsible for the crisis.

Bezi said the government represented by Abednego Ekokotu, a professor and chairman of Panel on Disputed Land, of allegedly apportioned a large expanse of land to Aladja

The professor also begged the governor Ifeanyi Okowa to intervene in the matter by directing Ekokotu to return and complete his job which include demarcation, delineation and survey, in the interest of peace.

Meanwhile some other group of militants had threatened to declare a Niger Delta Republic on Nigeria’s Independence at Ogbe-Ijoh community.

Daily post said a joint team of troops from the Nigerian military and police have been patrolling the said area since Saturday, October 1.

– The sight of a cross in a mosque premise sent Nasarawa residents into confusion

– The chief imam of the mosque confirmed the sighting and said it was a sign from God


In what might be considered a strange sighting, the sudden appearance of a cross a few metres away from a mosque in Nasarawa threw residents into confusion.

The Punch reports that residents of Assakio Development Area in Lafia were left awed by the strange sighting which has brought hundreds of people to the location to pray for forgiveness and blessing.

The cross which is the considered the symbol of Christianity was illuminated on the ground close to the mosque.

Hajara Hussaini confirmed that she was the first to see the light in the shape of a cross on Wednesday, September 28 when her mother sent her on errand.

Her mother, Matan Liman also confirmed the strange appearance and said her daughter was gripped in fear when she returned.

Muhammed Iliyasu who is the Chief Imam of Assakio Central Mosque said the sighting of the cross within the mosque premise confirmed that revelation was from God, affirming that “Jesus is also a prophet of God.”

Very Rev. Micheal Dogo of the Evangelical Reform Church of Christ, Assakio described the sighting of the cross as “a sign of reconciliation in the community.”

Grace Eze who resides in the community said she was healed when she visited the mosque.

“I underwent a surgery about two years ago after which I started to experience a movement in my body. But after praying before the cross, I got healed.”

This development comes as Muslims celebrate the new 1438AH year.

Similarly, hundreds of people trooped to Saint Augustine’s Catholic Church which is located in the Nenger area of Makurdi in Benue following the “appearance” of an ‘image’ of Jesus.

The church which is situated behind Government Model College became a hub for Catholic and non-Catholic worshipers after bright image fell on the crucifix of Jesus.
