There are indications that due to the militancy in the Niger Delta region that has reduced Nigeria’s oil production, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) unveiled plans to purchase oil from the Republic of Niger to Kaduna refinery.

Vanguard reports that Mr. Maikanti Baru who is the group managing director of NNPC said this after a bilateral discussion with the minister of energy and oil of the Republic of Niger, Hon. Foumakoye Gado, in Abuja.

Baru said that the NNPC would partner with Niger in the area of sharing geological data to further boost the ongoing exploratory activities in the Chad Basin and Benue Trough.

“There will be steering committee comprising some Ministers and a technical committee which will involve the NNPC and the Nigerien Ministry of Energy and Oil and their operators.”

The Nigerien Energy Minister, Hon. Gado said his visit was to discuss issues of interest especially in the area of the oil sector with the NNPC.

He said the procurement of crude oil for Kaduna refinery and its practicability was being worked out.

“One of the aims of this visit is to share geological information for us to draw the best profit out of the exploratory efforts.”

Meanwhile, just a day after President Muhammadu Buhari’s meeting with Niger Delta leaders where he was presented with a 16-point demand, oil-producing communities, under the aegis of Host Communities of Nigeria, Producing Oil and Gas (HOSTCOM) have submitted 5 new additional demands

President Buhari had met with Niger Delta leaders led by Chief Edwin Clark at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, November 1.

Some of the requests made by the Clark-led team include the completion of major road projects in the region, the take-off of the maritime university, the full activation of ports in Niger Delta and other water ways, the relocation of international oil companies to the region, the issuance of oil blocks to the states and other stakeholders as well as the strengthening of the Niger Delta Development Commission and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs. They also spoke about the issue of fiscal federalism.

It was gathered that the governor decision to sack the teachers comes on the heels of lapses noticed in the recruitment process of the affected teachers.

Governor Udom said that fake appointment letters were issued to the teachers who were not qualified.

He said: “It was discovered that the syndicate which had since been apprehended was involved in printing fake letters of appointment and fake school certificates at outrageous amounts ranging from 150,000 to 200,000 naira.

“Even the bible says if the foundation is not right, what can the righteous man do? We have tried to see how we could get something out of that recruitment process, but believe me, the foundation was very faulty.

“If we are putting people to teach our children, please let us leave sentiments apart and go for the right people. We need to make sure they went through the right process and have the right qualifications.”

However, the governor assured affected persons who have the necessary qualifications of been considered at the commencement of fresh recruitment.

He said: “We are assuring the 5,000 people that they need not worry, when we are calling for aptitude test, you need not re-apply, just walk into the venue of the exercise with that appointment letter and justify that you are qualified to teach our children.”

The cancellation of the teacher’s appointment was first announced few days ago by the Head of Civil Service in the state, Ekereobong Akpan, before the latest remark by the governor.

It is believed to be an unexpected blow to the affected teachers who for about two years now have been putting pressure on the government to assign them to public secondary schools across the state.

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has sacked at least five thousand teachers in the state, Premium Times reports.

According to the report, the affected teachers were recruited under the administration of Godswill Akpabio, former governor of the state.

Japanese media has recenty reported a bizarre medical case, where an unnamed woman started fire in the middle of a complex operation.

The doctors were reporteldy performing a form of laser surgery on her cervix at the Tokyo medical university hospital, when something went wrong.

The woman was lying on the operational table surrounded by a team of medics when her body accidentally expelled some gas.

In a blink of an eye it ignited the laser and started fire. It took some time for doctors to realize what happened and put fire out.

By this time, the female patient, in her 30s, was left her with serious burns to much of her body, including her waist and legs.

Shortly afterwards a commitee of experts were set up to determine the reason of ignition.

The specialists examined the case and concluded that there were no flammable materials were in the operating theatre during the surgery.

Their reprot says that the incident happened in April this year, but the details have only emerged following an investigation into the flames nature.
