HealthRotary Donates $100m For Polio Eradication In Nigeria, Others by dipoolowoo(op): 4:53am On Jun 11, 2019
Rotary has announced a $100 million grant to support the global effort to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year.

The funding comes as Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) address the final—and most pressing—challenges to ending poliovirus transmission, and as Nigeria approaches three years without any reported cases of wild poliovirus, bringing the Africa region closer to polio-free status.

“Routine immunization in high-risk states is helping us prevent new cases of wild polio,” said Dr Tunji Funsho, chair or Rotary’s Nigeria PolioPlus Committee. “Although the polio infrastructure has become stronger and allows us to also respond to other serious health concerns, we must remain committed to ensuring the political and financial support necessary to ending polio in Nigeria and around the globe for good.”

While there were only 33 cases of wild poliovirus reported in 2018, the last mile of eradication has proven to be the most difficult. Barriers to eradication–like weak health systems, insecurity, and mobile and remote populations–must be overcome. As long as a single child has polio, all children are at risk, which underscores the need for continued funding and commitment to eradication.

To support polio eradication efforts in endemic countries, Rotary is allocating half the funds to Afghanistan ($16.3 million), Nigeria ($10.2 million), and Pakistan ($25.2million).

Additional funding will support efforts to keep vulnerable countries polio-free and the countries are Chad ($102,395), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($9.5 million), Ethiopia ($2.6 million), Iraq ($6 million), Kenya ($6.3 million), Mali ($1.2 million), Somalia ($1.4 million), South Sudan ($1.2 million), Syria ($1.7 million) and Yemen ($2.1 million).

It was disclosed that the World Health Organization (WHO) will receive $1.3 million to conduct research, and will also receive support for surveillance activities in its Africa ($10.9 million) and Eastern Mediterranean ($4 million) Regions.

Rotary has committed to raising $50 million a year to be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, amounting to $150 million for polio eradication annually. The organisation has contributed more than $1.9 billion to fight the disease, including matching funds from the Gates Foundation, and countless volunteer hours since launching its polio eradication program, PolioPlus, in 1985.

In 1988, Rotary became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Gates Foundation later joined.

Since the initiative launched, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases in 1988 to 33 cases of wild poliovirus in 2018.

BusinessJumia Meets Vendors, Insists On Quality Products by dipoolowoo(op): 2:21am On Jun 08, 2019
A group of small and micro business owners across the country has said they are confident Jumia will continue helping their businesses achieve significant growth.

The sellers expressed this sentiment at the quarterly vendor board meeting with key leaders of the e-commerce company which held recently in Lagos.

The meeting was organised to brainstorm on and identify untapped growth potential that sellers on the platform could leverage to grow their businesses.

In her opening remark, Chief Executive Officer of Jumia Nigeria, Mrs Juliet Anammah, urged the sellers to constantly ensure they list top quality products and manage their inventory to avoid out of stock and automatic cancellation which affects their “seller score”. She noted that sellers with the highest scores attract more orders from customers.

The Chief Operating Officer of Jumia Nigeria, Ms Susan Chen, urged the sellers to leverage some of the big sales event organised by the company.

She cited Jumia Anniversary, Black Friday, Mobile Week as some of the commercial events that can aid the sellers in growing 3 times more if they enthusiastically take advantage of these sales events.

BusinessDaar Communications Shares Trade Flat Amid NBC Sanction by dipoolowoo(op): 1:03am On Jun 08, 2019
By Dipo Olowookere

Shares of Daar Communications Plc traded flat on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday despite the trouble facing the company at the moment.

On Thursday, its industry regulator, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), suspended the operating licence of its flagship broadcast stations, African Independent Television (AIT) and RayPower FM. As a result, the stations are presently not on air.

The NBC accused the media platforms of breaking the nation’s broadcasting codes by airing inciting materials despite being warned severally.

At the stock market on Friday, shares of the parent company of AIT and RayPower, Daar Communications, closed unchanged at 40 kobo per share.

Business Post observed that during the trading session, apart from not witnessing any price movement, there were no trading acting activities carried out on the stock.

The last activity recorded on Daar Communications’ shares was the day the operational licence of the company was suspended by the regulator.

On Thursday, June 6, 2019, investors exchanged a total unit of 1,300 shares of Daar Communications at the market.

Before then, the company recorded the trading of 10,000 units of its equities on May 31, 2019 at the market and the share price went for 40 kobo each.

Daar Communications Plc is a firm in the business of broadcasting, multimedia and allied services in Nigeria and it is owned by Mr Raymond Dokpesi.

Mr Dokpesi is a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and on the day his company’s licence was suspended, he staged a protest in Abuja, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using government agencies to intimidate members of the opposition.

At the stock market, Daar Communications has not been faring well lately and its share price has found it very difficult to go above or stay around the N5 per share of its IPO about 10 years ago.

The company has not paid dividends to its shareholders for years now, while financial results of the firm have always been delayed.

At the moment, the company is worth N4.8 billion on the stock market with 12 billion share outstanding.
