PoliticsLaw For Government Officials To Use The Services They Provide by directorsolomon(op): 10:48pm On Jul 19, 2013
ASUU strike, Poor public schools, bad transportation systems and Epileptic social amenities... these are the services provided for Nigerians by Government officials who don't use them...

Don't you think its about time we ask that a Bill be passed that ALL government officials use public services and therefore banned from going abroad for the same services offered in the country?

their kids should not be allowed to school abroad or in private Nigerian school.... all medical treatment should also be catered for by general hospitals and so on....

lets secure our future NOW?

what's your take?

TV/MoviesRe: Nollywood In The Future by directorsolomon(op): 6:54am On Jul 09, 2013
VillageBoi: Ok DirectorSolomon, I've read your script 3 times in a row just now and for some reason I still don't fully get it. I mean I do actually get what you are trying to do BUT the slight issue I have is the 'time slip phenomenon'.

In one instance the people are 'frozen' - that's all well and good BUT in the case of Kate - she disappears completely - it's not a long enough script for a 'switch of event' so stick to one - just let them all freeze.

I'm also not convinced about the reactions. When Mr Effiong realises the kids in the corridor are 'frozen' he first thinks its a prank; that's ok BUT when he goes downstairs and EVERYONE is frozen... by then the realisation that something is 'really' not right should have kicked in and he shouldn't still be thinking it's a prank. As a teacher I think he should have much better observational skills.

Oh and when he talks with kate after she's had a sh*t lol. My reaction is the same as with every other girl in a 'horror' movie - I want to slap the annoying b*tch - Teacher man dey try talk to her and all she doing is going on and on with her "I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared, I'm scared...
You get my drift. Even me wey no be actor I go by force enta the fim dash the girl one hot Navy slap... just because she's become irritating at that point!

Not much to say about the script; it's ok but quite a bit of work can still be done on it. It also kinda feels incomplete... there is definitely something missing... it doesn't fulfill 'something' by the end. And I'm not even sure what that 'something' is.

My question to you is - How do you propose to carry out these effects of frozen people and how do you propose to film it? Because that is the only thing that will be pretty difficult in this film. The truth is the amout of planning and rotoscoping to make that look believable is going to be hell.
Remember what you've written are not 'locked-off' shots, so with Mr Effiong moving a lot how will you make it work?
thanks a lot, i'm grateful for your time and inputs, however its one thing to explain the concern you have but i wont id rather not cause i believe that if the reader in not quite clear then i did not communicate well enough which its why i said its my "first draft"
the "time slip phenomenon" gist is still under research and i fully understand what you mean by the "b*tch" disappearing totally lol.

your "im scared comment was quite funny and like i said i did not communicate kate's frame of mind as regards her repeating the same statement as she was in shock too.(will work on that too)

the fact that something is missing, not fulfilled is the unconventional THEME of the short film as would be visually suggested also with the use of wide angle lenses and shot angles grin

and finally as regards pulling off the effect... the trick is... there is no effect (well.. as regards CGI tho) if you catch my drift... but im gonna need the help of a lot of people tho.

thanks a lot once again... much appreciated

speedyboi: lol @ praying. grin

anyway, you don't need 'mike adenuga riches' for that. No be copyright you wan buy na, all you need is rights to make movies based on the books. That's not expensive to get (especially in Nigeria)
thanks a lot for the insight, never thought of it that way, cheers

sholay2011: I didn't comment anyway. But you can still re-comment on this wink grin.

And I absolutely support your response of NO action. Seriously, we just need to be more creative. I would personally like Nigeria to do biopics, replicate real-life events (Aba women riot, boko haram stuff, a president's administration etc.).
True! very true... seeing a movie you can relate to locally and internationally is a good idea, im praying i get rich quick to buy the right to some Nigerian books i read way back so as to convert them to movies

Talking about short films, here is a 1st draft of a short i wanna make just to introduce some University students to the art of film making, please read and let me know what you think

I/E. SCHOOL QUADRANGLE AND CAR PARK

Ext: Department car park
Effiong a young lecturer emerges from his car as he is
approached by a student; Kate who helps him with a bag, KATE
is obviously the bookworm type with nerdy glasses Effiong
obviously has a slight headache but tries to fight it.

KATE
Hello sir, we have been waiting for
you for over twenty minutes

EFFIONG
Yes I know and I have 6 missed
calls from you to back that up

He locks the car and puts the key in his pocket as they start
making their way into the building

KATE
I'm sorry sir ...are we still up
for a class… sir you look like you
are tired.

EFFIONG
A bloody headache and I'm guessing
that you are about to make it worse

A student walks by as Mr. Effiong calls his attention

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Hey grab an aspirin from the main
office will you? Bring it to my
office.

STUDENT
Yes sir.

KATE
Sorry sir…

EFFIONG
Thank you, I will be at the
class as soon as I grab an aspirin

KATE
Ok sir, sir, have you heard about
the latest paranormal phenomenon
Said to be taking place around our
region
2.

EFFIONG
Oh my! Kate! Not another one of
your internet obsessions, I hope
its not the butterfly effect this
time.

KATE
But the butterfly effect is true
sir.

EFFIONG
What is it this time?

KATE
(Glances at her phone) Says here
it's the Time slip Phenomenon, I
thought you might have an idea

EFFIONG
No I don't but it sounds like a
hoax… another internet ....
The student walks into his office with an aspirin and hands
it to Mr. Effiong

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
I tell you what! I will take a look
at it after class…

As if that was all she wanted to hear she jumps up and makes
for the door

KATE
Thank you sir, see you in class

Effiong throws the pill in his mouth as he throws his head
back, takes a swig of the bottled water on his table and
stares into the distance

CUT TO:

INT. EFFIONGS OFFICE DAY

Effiong wakes with a start as his brain tries to naturally
reboot itself, he glances at his watch and curses as he
realizes he is late for class and makes for the door

CUT TO:
3.

INT. DEPARTMENT CORRIDOR, DAY

Effiong saunters to the corridor, the atmosphere is thick but
devoid of people although he is oblivious of it, he turns the
corner and see a few people in the distance looking out of
the window

EFFIONG
Alright people lets move in for
class

There is no response

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
You heard me lets go in people...

He is taken mid sentence as he wonders what they are looking
at through the window, he moves to the nearest window and
looks out... nothing out of the ordinary except for people
transfixed, he is now a little bit concerned but curious

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
What are you guys...

He stares at the people at the window and realizes that no
one has even looked at his direction.

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Hey! (Raising his voice) you all
know how i feel about pranks...
i...

He looks out of the window again and decides to go
downstairs.

CUT TO:

EXT. DEPARTMENT OPEN PARK, DAY

As he emerges from the building to the open, the sight is too
much to take in, there are people scattered around the open
all frozen and looking at a particular direction

Effiong collects himself and moves towards to open park with
a bit of anger swelling inside him he yells out

EFFIONG
(shouting) LOOK!!! If this
is some kind of prank or
sick TV show i want you
to know that i am not
buying it ok!
4.

The is dead silence...

He finally moves towards one of the frozen persons who got
his attention, with a little more courage he moves closer to
the figure stares at it for a bit and decides to touch...

What happens next gave Effiong a hair raising fright.

The frozen beings eyes rolled from its original position
towards him...

As he moves back in total fright he bumps into someone

...KATE...

The both shout and react with total horror and surprise

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Kate!!! Wha... what... what is
going on? Where were you?

KATE
Sir im scared

EFFIONG
Where were you?

KATE
Sir im scared

EFFIONG
What happened here?

KATE
Im so scared, im so scared, im so
scared...

Effiong notices that she is not focused and very shaken, he
moves in to grab her and snap her back into focus

EFFIONG
Hey!!! What happened?

KATE
I dont know... i was in the toilet
my phone stopped working and...
everywhere was quite and... and...

Her eyes widened in its sockets

KATE (CONT'D)
Time laps...? (Looks at him) the
PHENOMENON!
5.

EFFIONG
Get in the car lets go get help

Effiong moves towards his car and unlocks it.

KATE
It wont work!

EFFIONG
What do you mean it wont work

KATE
I remember reading that nothing
will work... my phone stopped
working... everything electric,
electronic or machinery nothing
will work.

EFFIONG
Thats nonsense

He gets into his car and turns on the ignition... nothing he
tries again but not even a click, he steps out

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Lets give it a push... kate?

Kate is no more there

EFFIONG (CONT'D)
Kate!!! Where the hell are you?

The camera shows a very wide shot where he is the only
animate being in the shot.

all we hear is Effiong yelling her name as the sound decays

CUT TO:

EXT. SCHOOL DRIVEWAY DAY

We see a collage of shots showing desolate but quiet place,
shots of people frozen, wind blowing papers on the ground etc

Effiong head fills up the shot as he looks disheveled,
confused, scared and clueless... he turns to the expanse of
road... takes a deep breath and starts walking briskly
towards the horizon...

Our shot cranes up to show the state of emptiness Effiong is
walking toward...

FADE OUT.

My own be -

Action = 100% NO
Adventure = 100% yes
Sci-Fi = Kind of - with hardly any special effects then YES... full of special effects - hell NO!

Oh eerrmmmm new faces 100% yes; if you can get them to actually ACT... old faces - boring, overused and most can't act.
i would agree with you but on the area of "NO ACTION" i beg to differ because i believe there is no genre that cant be explored in our culture.

in the area of short films ive had a lot of fallouts with my friends in the field cause they dont believe in it. if only they know how important it is to keep making short films, long story short i want to see new and innovative filmmakers and actors.

TV/MoviesRe: Cost Of Making A Music Video? by directorsolomon(m): 8:31am On Jun 15, 2013
After all the technically and the equipment rentage and all... it boils down to the creativity and interpretation of the song by the Director and how well he can bring that ideas to life with whatever equipment he is using....

some simple songs may require alot of shots others may not.... I currently have a 'previz' of a one shot music video where there is absolutely no cut from beginning to the end of the song.... this kinda shot requires hours and hours of technical set up over a span of space....(from a studio to an open street) as the camera is constantly following the subject throughout the shot

I can't tell you how much it will take to shoot a video until I'm done listening to the song and discuss the concept with you... some may require pyrotechnics others may just be simple shots in already existing edifices

no matter what camera or or Jib (NOT JEEP) or Dolly's or Steadicam you are using or even stop motion animation York video can range from 180k to even 2million...

I think I should stop here...

The problem with Kajola amongst alot of other Nigerian films is the fact that anybody can say he's a Director without passing through the fire of training ... on the other hand, as soon as an Editor is able to make someone disappear he convinces people that he can outdo Hollywood and dorns the cap of a Director a whole lot of these people can't even make a 120 page script out of an exciting premise and most of all... 'ALL' the Nollywood directors find it hard to synergies all the arts and craft (includes actors) into an artistic whole...

this takes years of practicing with short films and the discipline of "staying in your own lane" (if you wan be editor ...be Editor NOT 3D animator)

the Kajola dude was just a Guy who could do a little 3D and thought he had arrived, no training whatsoever as a filmmaker and at the End the film swallowed him up.

to buttress this one so called Epic with which its title is along the lines of "ZANGA" which lazily burrowed from the Gilder Ultimate Search is premiering in Abuja cinemas. its as weak and insulting to film goers as ever....
TV/MoviesCan You Fund A Movie? by directorsolomon(op): 10:39pm On Jun 10, 2013
I was thinking, there are places abroad (on the Internet too) where a filmmakers can pitch his movie idea and if people like the story and the scope of work that will go into the making of the movie, they go ahead and Donate for the movie to be made.

the funding can range from $1 - $1000... the basic idea is known as crowd funding.

I'm not trying to advertise or pitch here (at least not yet) but I wanted to hear your views about it.

The benefit of this funding is that the filmmaker already can arouse the interest of the viewers and they will eagerly await the up coming movie.

secondly the people who fund the movie are like mini Executive producers, although they don't get to influence the artistic outcome of the movie but they get perks like free tickets, promotional Tshirts and so on...

its also a great way to discover new talents (Actors and Directors) and also raise the movie awareness.

Please NairaLanders any advice, thoughts and encouragement would be highly appreciated.

thanks

TV/MoviesRe: Half Of A Yellow Sun Confirmed As Nollywood’s Most Expensive Movie by directorsolomon(m): 10:48am On May 16, 2013
VillageBoi: Through the Glass - N10 million.
The Figurine - N30 million
Ije - N57 million
Anchor Baby - N17 million

The above are 'Nollywood' films and the type of return the best ones can make. Half Of A Yellow Sun isn't Nollywood nor has it been made with Nigerians as the primary audience.

No 'Nollywood' film, as I've mentioned before a few times, has ever come anywhere near even making $1 million. Half Of A Yellow Sun will put the spotlight on Nigeria and I'm pretty sure at some point real 'Nollywood' films will start breaking the million dollar barrier... That will only be done if they start looking at and catering for a 'global' audience.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Nigerian audience has not spent $1 million on any film be it Hollywood or Nollywood... in fact be it anythingwood we DO NOT spend money at the cinemas... simples!

But then again we know Nigerians are quick to jump on anything as a 'bragging right' as that seems to be the most important thing for us. (HOYAS is just a film shot IN Nigeria and is not 'Nollywood', just like the wonderful 1990 film 'Mr Johnson' - starring Pierce Brosnan and shot in Kano is also not a 'Nollywood' film.)

Real Nollywood needs, for starters, to begin to make seriously good global films for $100K-$200K tops. Since it's obvious large returns will not come from the Nigerian audience; let them tackle the global one... get that right and then with time the budgets will increase exponentially.
For now it makes zero sense for 'Nollywood' to have huge budgets if it takes touting a movie from cinema to cinema for 2-5yrs to recoup the budget... Either that or our filmmakers have been lying about their 'actual' budgets.
I totally agree with you... I only want to focus on "local" contents for International audience ...so help me God
