I read someone can only get to Barbados only through the UK, US or Canada. Please kindly share if you have a contrary opinion to that.

You will need a UK visa since you'll be changing the airport from London Heathrow to Gatwick. Apply for standard UK visa.

Arrival and departing are at London Heathrow. No changing of airport

That is entirely up to you, but if you decided to get into the UK then you have to apply for a transit visa or stay inside the airport
