ComputersRe: Any Datacenter In Nigeria (Lagos)? by Djcn: 9:30pm On Aug 14, 2011
Our infrastructure will depend upon the services to be rendered.
We hope the data centre will cater for

Colocation
Dedicated hosting
Shared hosting
VPS
Off site backups
Cloud Hosting
Managed Hosting
Application server, game server,
Virtualization e.t.c

Well a 5000sqm of floor space will be modest and of course the structure will be more than blocks and mortar, state of the art fire protection systems, fire detection systems, fire prevention systems, cctv, Biometric security systems (voice and fingerprint, iris), battery banks, and of course Air conditioning Systems are some of the equipments that will be installed.

Thanks, As far as i'm concerned MTN hynet has the best offering when compared with services form ipnx, Swift, Dopc, mobitel who also place data caps on downloads. I just hope the service will be fast. I'm tired of their data caps. Will be checking it out at their office.

OK, lets start building our virtual server.
Having agreed on Lag to be the choice location preferably Lekki, depending on the needs or requirements, we can build a 500kw solar generator which will solve our power needs for the next 30 years (current prices is less than a $1/watt) or have a generator of similar capacity going for about $50,000.

Good news Indeed. But to be frank, these have not translated to lower prices for the individual user, only corporate organizations benefit from these.
I look forward to when you pay for content and not for the link. Years to come but we will get there. Can more cables land plshuh

I don;t see how one can guarantee up-time without supplying their own power, but still have to talk to Maintenance Engineers on the ground.

Additionally I don't see Lagos proper being a secured area due to the proximity to water and all the flooding nonsense that abounds.

But yah'all are contributing very positively and I am enjoying this discussion.
Whenever i think of data center, i think of redundancy, so there should always be options, if you're think of power, think of at least two options that will run simultaneously, same goes for every other thing.
As far as i'm concerned, Lagos remains the most suitable location for a data center. most companies have their HQs there, and it also boasts of the best network services.
ComputersRe: Any Datacenter In Nigeria (Lagos)? by Djcn: 7:03pm On Aug 12, 2011
Simir you made some interesting points there but however power is not the major when it comes to our having a Data center. The major issue is the bandwidth, reliability (uptime), and of course security. Thousands of Transmission Towers run 24/7 for a year in this country and my personal system has not gone off for approximately two years (have no patience for booting time).
There is significant improvement in the power situation in the country and even oversees some data centres don't depend on the local stations. They sometimes generate their own power source.

ComputersApple Launches Second Ipad Tablet by Djcn(op): 8:09pm On Mar 02, 2011
Apple launches second iPad tablet
iPad screen Apple has sold more than 15 million iPads since it launched the device in April 2010.
Apple has launched the second generation of its iPad tablet computer at an event in California.

The company said the machine featured a faster processor, improved graphics, and front and rear cameras.

Apple has led the industry in sales of tablet devices since the launch of the first iPad in April 2010.

However, it has been losing market share to a raft of rival devices from manufacturers such as HP and Samsung.

The event was hosted by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs, who has been on medical leave from the company since January.

It had been widely speculated that he would not appear owing to his ill health.

Mr Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004.

Speaking on stage, he said: "We have been working on this product for a while and I just didn't want to miss today.

ComputersRe: Solid State Drive Vs Sata Hard Drives. Which One Is Better? by Djcn: 5:42am On Jan 28, 2011
Quite a nice config out there, the price tag is however on the high side.
For now the SATA HDD is a better bargain, but note that the processor speed cannot compensate for the HDD.
ComputersRe: Solid State Drive Vs Sata Hard Drives. Which One Is Better? by Djcn: 11:32am On Jan 18, 2011
Solid-state drives (SSDs) make for a pretty great upgrade, but they aren't without their downsides (most notably, their high cost and low amounts of space). While the answer to "are they worth it?" is fairly subjective, there are a number of factors that can influence the usefulness of a solid-state drive.

HDDs spins up but ur SSD are much like USB flash drives, uses less power thus extending ur battery life

Because they can access and read data very quickly, you'll find that the biggest visible advantages of an SSD are fast boot-ups and application starts. Thus, they are the most useful if you're the type of person that likes to launch a lot of applications, or launch certain slow-loading applications such as Adobe Photoshop.

I would recommend u get a hybrid drive or a better set-up is to get two drives and put your OS and applications on the SSD, while having a second, regular hard drive for all your data. This is easy in a desktop computer and some laptops computers.

samir101ng:
To further break it down, 512 is your downlink speed and 256 is your upload speed.

However since the speeds are in kilobits - 512/256 kbps, i have converted them to kilobytes.

This gave me a downlink speed of 64 kilobytes and 32 kilobytes uplink respectively which is poor in my opinion

considering the amount you are paying per month.

I have an HSPA modem with a connection speed of 7.5 Mbps. That's mega bits per second. when converted to

kilobytes, i get 937.5 Kilobytes per second. I can confirm and you can check the internet screenshots thread but i

have reached upto speeds of 1.02MB (Megabyte) using IDM (Internet Download Manager) on MTN 3.5G network. My

normal average speed is above 350 Kilobytes per second. My only problem is the latency issue (300ms & above)

and network stability (it sometimes disconnects or hangs).

@tomcat

Could you please post a screenshot of your speed using speedtest and IDM ? Will really appreciate it.
There are some issues which you did not considered.

A 512/256 kbps DSL is far better than a HSDPA service provided by our telecoms operators

1. Your DSL service is a dedicated service while the other is shared.
2. The Latency for DSL is Lower
3. You can download ur entire MTN usage limit in less than 48 hours
4. Alternative technology for DSL in Nigeria is satllite which is far more expensive
in terms of installation and bandwidth prices.
5. Your dsl is always on, not dial up
6 HSDPA is optimised for mobile devices and will remain as such, sure we use them for most of our internet needs but we need other techs to bring about competitive pricing, so the need for DSL, cable and Fibre optics.

Also note that having a 7.2Mbps modem on the MTN network does not translate to better speed cos the bottle neck is 3.6 just as driving a buggatti veroyn on Benin-Lagos road cannot translate to better velocity on the road over a benz 220.

Dont forget u're on a shared platform, no dedicated access here. If 20 users are on the same cell then u divide by 20 and when u look at the overhead, not really impressive.

[quote author=samir101ng link=topic=224341.msg7424827#msg7424827 date=1293581267]Lol. cool cool

Nigeria is in a very good position to deliver true broadband speeds to its citizens. We have 3 Submarine cables :

1. SAT3 - 340 Gbit/s

2. Main One - 1280 Gbit/s

3. Glo-1 - 640 Gbit/s undecided undecided

Nigeria is NOT in a very good position to deliver true broadband speeds to its citizens. You should know the definition of broadband and its subjective stature. California as a state has more than that capacity that u beloved country will rely upon for the next decade.

With the fate of Nitel/SAT3 currently unknown and the wuru-wuru that Glo is doing with Glo-1, the only one we can rely on is Main One.

On the terrestrial side, our ISP's ( IPNX, Swfit Networks) and Mobile networks (MTN, Etisalat, Starcomms) are deploying nationwide fibre-optic cables to connect to these submarine cables. The problem with our people is pure wickedness and lack of human kindness. Am not against a company making profit but mixing it with poor services and exploitation is something i have seen peculiar to Nigerian companies. This kind of thing cannot happen in Europe or US. These companies have bought Min. of Information/Communication, Special Advisers on Communications, Senate/Reps Members on Communication, NCC and other regulatory agencies why would they not act with impunity. I have a friend that works at Galaxy Backbone here in Abuja. We went to install a 1.2M ku band vsat at a Senators house in Apo Legislative Qtrs in Abuja. Why ? Because the useless senator had received an Apple Ipad as a gift and wanted 24 hrs internet connection. This guy to add salt to injury is not paying a damn because the MD of Galaxy Backbone is a "friend". I was like WTF angry angry
main one tarriffs is not as friendly as u think it is or as they say.

Now u feel my pain. We're being over-charged on tarriffs and nothing is going to happen about it, if all continues the same.

MTN Telepresence has been up and running for months already. Nevertheless it is the least of our problems for now. Stop pushing too far. MTN should consolidate on their voice and data plans.

nope, etisalat bought Alheri's (dangote) 3g licence last year or was it early this year, so they have a 3g license

rolling out a 3g network no be beans, esp when that level is about to become old tech. the world is shifting to 4G

guess they are at a cross roads, do a 3g network that will take like a year or two to complete, by then the competition is announcing 4G trials and rollout!
Alheri got that license over 3 years now and left it to rot, but both parties ve not made any official statements on that issue otherwise if etisalat actually bought, they would ve rolled out the services by now, i think the news has been on for over a year now.

Etisalat never bid for a 3g license which they would ve gotten from NCC if they did, hope they can catch up in d game because the samsung galaxy would have make more sense on d 3g platform

Glo 7.5k for 6gig, 1250 per gig

Expect price slash again in twelve months time.
