Sports / Why Is Nigeria Not Well Represented In The Olympics by DKbarry(m): 5:31pm On Aug 04, 2021
Why is it that Nigeria isn't properly represented in the Olympics? No Weight lifter, no Sprinter, no shotput thrower and all. Is it that we don't have guys that major in these sports or what? I remember This guy from Umuahia Abia state Me Eke Kalu (AKA Scorpion) that won gold in National Sports Festival, Benin City, Edo state. Why wasn't he pushed to the Olympics to harness and showcase his full potential?

Nairaland / General / China Is Churning Out A New Billionaire Every 5 Days by DKbarry(m): 7:27am On Oct 27, 2017
A new report by UBS and PwC found the total wealth of the world's billionaires grew by 17% in 2016 to $6 trillion. The reports says that growth is being driven by Asia, with three quarters of all new billionaires coming from India and China.China had the highest number of new billionaires, adding one every 5 days.

The US might be the wealthiest country in the world, but it's not churning out the most billionaires.

That title goes to China, which added 67 new billionaires in 2016, or one about every five days, according to a report on billionaires by UBS and PwC released Thursday.

"According to the Asian billionaires we interviewed for this report, a combination of geopolitical stability in Greater China, rising Chinese real estate prices, infrastructure spending, the growing middle class and buoyant commodity prices all joined together to boost wealth," the report said.

For the first time ever, Asia had more billionaires (637) than the US (538), the report found. Still, the US maintained a higher concentration of billionaire wealth, but Asia top that measure in the next three to four years.

The major driver of wealth in Asia, according to the report, was technology. John Matthews, the report's coauthor, told Business Insider that Asian countries are better at deploying and integrating new technology, which for the most part is first conceived of by companies in the US.

"Asia is the land of implementation and integration," Matthews said. For instance, the US gave birth to new finance apps like Venmo and PayPal, but it's in Asian countries where such apps have scaled the most.

"People don't use cash or credit cards in China, they use apps," Matthews said.

Still, billionaire wealth in Asia, Matthews noted, is very volatile because it is so closely linked to the public markets.

"So they can be a billionaire one day, but not the next," he said. "Only 40% of billionaires [in the US] have their wealth tied to public markets, compared to 70% in Asia."

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Has Created Two Apps To Push His Agenda by DKbarry(m): 7:23am On Oct 26, 2017
Nnamdi Kanu's whereabouts may be unknown but his hate-filled, pro-Biafra propaganda is streaming from two mobile apps.

Radio Biafra and Biafra TV have already amassed 50 thousand downloads each.  (Pulse)

The self-proclaimed leader of theIndigenous People of Biafra,Nnamdi Kanu may have pulled a vanishing act on everyone in the last two weeks; the real story is in how the sentiment that he inspired is still strong, buoyed by smart moves like the Radio Biafra andBiafra TV apps.

YES. IPOB got digital. There are Radio Biafra and Biafra TV apps in theGoogle Play Store.

While Radio Biafra is a somewhat popular name, Biafra TV is described in the Store as a platform that “provides an interactive medium for promoting Biafran awareness”. RBL Management, a London-based shell company that has been traced to Nnamdi Kanu in the past, is credited as the developer of both apps.

In 2012, Kanu gained national prominence with his vitriolic rants on Radio Biafra, an internet radio station that broadcast signals from his council flat in Peckham, bouncing waves off telecom masts in the East.

The station gained a strong following among young and old in the East in little time. It was instrumental in drumming up pro-Biafra sentiment before Kanu’s return to Nigeria. The station no longer runs on its old frequency.

You may be forgiven for thinking Radio Biafra has completely gone underground; but with 50 thousand downloads each, it’s clear that’s not the case.

Whether or not they actually work is another matter.

The Biafra TV app grants access to four channels, each creatively named “Channel 1”, “Channel 2” and so on.

Channel 1 features a talk show, with a variety of guests discussing conspiracy theories that are consistent with the tone of IPOB’s message.

In the background, there is an image of Nnamdi Kanu, credited as the “Supreme Director”, watching over like a benevolent god who ran away and left his people to fight.

Channel 2 appears to be a news channel, with broadcasts from events and pro-Biafra rallies.

Channel 3 features propaganda rants from notable pro-Biafra agitators that will remind you of Nnamdi Kanu’s rhetoric.

Channel 4 features typical anti-west documentaries from Al-Jazeera that seem to fill holes in IPOB’s ideology.

Two things stand out. Pro-Biafra propaganda dominates the programming, consistent with the rhetoric pushed by Kanu and the IPOB. On the other hand, it appears that there is very little content and most of the shows can go on a loop for a whole day.

Radio Biafra is slightly different, and from the tone of the reviews by consumers, its popularity has not waned. The app opens to a screen with the station’s logo and a tag that reads “… in defense of freedom”.

The comments beneath the app’s profile suggest that quite a number of listeners are enthusiastic about this so-called defense of their beliefs.

One of such comments, written under the name “Mazi Uzochukwu” reads, “Radio Biafra is a blessing to the self-determination struggle of the indigenous people of Biafra.”. Another reads, “OMG. The truth is here. This is my simple religion. There is no need for temple; no need for complicated philosophy”.

The crux of the station is long monologues, based on misinterpreted history, conspiracy theories, and pro-Biafra propaganda. Still, there is space for interviews and pro-Biafra covers of popular songs.

One of the most popular is a cover of the USA for Africa posse cut, “We are the World”. This version sings “We are the Biafrans, we are the one who will change the world”.

Between these two platforms, there is sufficient programming to meet the needs of those who found a place in IPOB’s ideology and unwitting listeners who want to understand the message.

With internet and mobile penetration higher than ever, it presents scary prospects that underline the influence of new media platforms such as these.

For context, the number of downloads on both apps are baby numbers next to the 1.5 million people who are subscribed to its posts and content onFacebook.

Since 2014, the Federal Government has made several attempts to take Radio Biafra off the airwaves. In 2015, three members of IPOB, David Nwawusi, Benjamin Madubugwu andChidiebere Onwudiwe were detained at various times during the year for connecting Radio Biafra transmitters to Ericsson masts in eastern states.

Dealing with a mobile application is an entirely different proposition.

As of the date of writing this, Nnamdi Kanu is still nowhere to be found. The IPOB leader disappeared into not-so-thin air after the Nigerian army invaded his home in the town of Isiama Afarain Abia on Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Despite a pending suit and the word of his surety, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribewho guaranteed his presence in court, Kanu has not surfaced.

Fans of his speeches may miss his presence but for those who know, there are two apps on Google’s Play Store where the hate speech and propaganda never ends.

Business / Lil Wayne Reportedly Petitions To Dissolve Young Money Records by DKbarry(m): 7:01am On Oct 26, 2017
Lil Wayne allegedly wants Young Money to be shut down if the company isn't handled properly.

There was a time when Young Money, as a collective, had a major influence on hip hop's landscape. When Drake and Nicki Minaj were just starting to blossom into their careers, Weezy's Young Money imprint was the label that nurtured them into being the superstars they are today. Sadly, it seems that Lil Wayne want to shut down shop.

Lil Wayne is allegedly trying to close down the Young Money imprint, according to reports from The Blast. The feud he's been having with Birdman seems to have trickled down to his own imprint. The report says that Lil Wayne is sick of Birdman cashing in on his hard work and either wants the music label to be dealt with properly or shut down completely. Wayne reportedly said he feels he's brought an enormous amount of talent to the company, especially with Drake and Nicki Minaj, but says he was bamboozled by Birdman.

In documents that Wayne allegedly filed, he's asking the court to "appoint a receiver to supervise the operations of Young Money Label joint venture or order the termination of Young Money Label joint venture and appoint a liquidator."

It would be the end of an era if Young Money ends up terminated as a company. It initially started as a joint venture between Wayne and Cash Money back in 2003.

Wayne's original beef with Birdman and Cash Money Records stems back to 2014 when Wayne said that Cash Money is refusing to release Tha Carter V and that Wayne has yet to receive his $8 million dollar advance from Birdman.

Despite Wayne's claims, Birdman continues to deny that he or Wayne have any issues. A few weeks prior, Birdman went on an epic rant on his Instagram story where he said that he's taken care of Wayne regardless of what the media or others are saying.

"Bitch, you think I ain't gonna make sure he straight? Svck a niggas d*ck, b*tch. I'm gonna show all you pu**y niggas that got in my business, fvck you nigga," he said.

The beef between father and son doesn't look like it'll come to a halt anytime soon.

Career / 9 Habits That May Help You Become A Billionaire by DKbarry(m): 6:48am On Oct 26, 2017
You might think billionaires have superpowers or an exclusive secret that helped them achieve billionaire status, but they don't. When you do a bit of digging into their habits what you find is that many billionaires do several of the same things.

Guess what? These habits won't require dramatic life changes or extreme intellect, just the power of your commitment to see them through.

No, there is not a direct correlation or a guaranteed path to billionaire status if you adopt these habits. But you are much more likely to be more productive and more successful in the future if you commit to some of these habits today.

Learn

Many billionaires never stop learning and certainly don't require a formal setting to build their skills. They are students of trends, current events and personal development. They seek to understand the problems they see around them and are constantly curious — how does that work, how can we be more efficient, what's that and how can we make it better?

When you commit to learning something new in your industry every day, your action emulates what successful people do.

Read

Many billionaires from Oprah Winfrey to Warren Buffet to Bill Gates are voracious readers. Winfrey leads a book club, Buffett spends up to 80% of his day reading and Gates reads about 50 books a year. This helps them with the learning habit as well, to constantly hone their skills, keep current with industry developments and learn from others.
They say "no" but don't accept no as an answer

In order to focus on their most important priorities, billionaires say no to those things that don't help them achieve their objectives. However, they won't easily accept no for an answer from colleagues, vendors or employees if they believe that something can be done to accelerate success.
Grit

Most billionaires have failed. We're not just talking about a small bump in the road, these are failures that would cause many to throw in the towel. Not an aspiring billionaire. They view obstacles as detours to achieving their goals, but they never quit. They take the learning lessons from the failure and keep on trucking.

Early risers and starters

Many billionaires make the most of every day and that usually means waking up earlier than most; Jack Dorsey wakes up at 5 a.m. to work out and meditate and Richard Branson wakes up at 5:45 a.m. to exercise.

Many also started earlier in life than most of us with investing and capitalizing on compound interest, dabbling in entrepreneurship and being driven to achieve their dreams. Even if you're older than Mark Zuckerberg, you can still achieve success. It just requires action today.

Exercise

There's a common acceptance of the importance of exercise by billionaires to help your mind and body be at the top of their games. Richard Branson claims that regular physical activity can add four extra hours of productivity to each day. Mark Cuban devotes an hour a day to cardio.

Billionaires are not only fierce in the boardroom, they also push themselves physically. And science will back it up: exercise not only improves health and reduce stress, but it can help focus, enhance creativity and make you better at multitasking.
Independent risk-takers

Instead of going with the flow and follow the corporate ladder, billionaires aren't afraid to go against what everyone else is doing to chart their own course, even when there are vocal naysayers. They are disrupters who look to at things in new ways to deliver products or services that others aren't willing to step out of line and assume the risk to try.

Routines

Highly successful people have adopted rituals whether it's a daily gratitude practice or meditation. They have routines to keep the minutiae of the day-to-day from cluttering their minds; there's a reason Steve Jobs' daily uniform was jeans and a black mock turtleneck and Mark Zuckerberg wears a grey T-shirt every day. They never have to spend valuable time or energy on shopping or thinking about what to wear.
Surround yourself with high achievers

Billionaires believe what Jim Rohn said, "You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with." They hang out with other power players and they learn from one another.

If you want to boost your success today then it's time to start acting like a billionaire. Pick one or more of these habits and get started on the path to success right now.

Nice pix. Keep the pictures coming. I think you can do some investigative reporting like finding out how much handy men (plumbers, mechanics, electricians, security guards, mcdonalds, starbucks etc) make over there so that guys that want to go and hustle there will know how much they will likely earn. How much is earned per hour? Cost of accomodation for one room? Things like that. What do you think?

I quite agree with you.

Nairaland / General / Does Bank Of Industry (BOI) Give #100,000 Loan? by DKbarry(m): 8:32am On May 11, 2017
Good morning fellow Nairalanders, please i would lobe to know if anyone knows anything about the "ongoing Bank of Industry #100,000" loan that had been going on for more than 5months now.

A certain woman in my area told my wife about the loan and she became interested, she wanted to use the loan to upgrade her shop so she told us that the registration and opening of account (access bank) is #5,500 so i registered for my wife. she said it's going to take just 2weeks but my people, its more than 4 months now and still no show. Yes my wife received a message of her account opening and a message from BOI that the loan is been processed (that should be about a month or two ago), till now no show. That same woman said the interest of the loan is just #5,000 and that my wife should part with the #5,000 interest ( that was yesterday) so that when the money comes out, she will no longer pay the interest. This raised a red flag and i began asking questions on how will i pay an interest for a loan i didn't take or in this case HAVEN'T taken? Early this month, my wife received a message from BOI "that it had Bern brought to their notice that people take money from many to process BOI loans for them, and BOI doesn't ask for or take money from anyone for loan processing. Its completely free they say". My problem is that they didn't leave a phone number for inquiry or for complain as the message was like a bulk SMS with just their name Boldly written as the sender. Please fellow Nairalanders, i want to know if anyone knows about this BOI loans especially the #100,000 one.

If anyone knows of any phone line to contact the Bank of Industry. offices in ABA or Owerri or Porthacort or even their head office, please kindly share the number with me so that i can call them and get clarity on this loan matter. I want to make complaints and inquire from them because i honestly think that this woman is committing fraud because we are more that or almost 100 people trying to access the loan through her. So i need good evidence to nail her if she is trying to defraud us. There is no BOI office in my City and state (UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE). Please help a brother not to fall a victim to scam in this Buhari Era. thanks.

Nairaland / General / Business Mogul At 5 – Blue Ivy Carter Could Be Launching A Beauty Line Soon! by DKbarry(m): 7:14am On Feb 07, 2017
According to gossip site TMZ, Beyonce recently filed legal documents to trademark the name Blue Ivy Carter, after a similar attempt to trademark the name was shot down in 2012 – because someone has capitalized on the name Blue Ivy before Queen Bey.

It was said that Beyonce’s goal is to launch Blue Ivy Carter hair care, fragrance, clothing, baby, and tech products under her company, to make her daughter into a multi-millionaire mogul before a lot of adults out there.

Beyonce’s camp hasn’t confirmed the story yet but launching a hair care line with her daughter’s name will be a great way to clap back at trolls and fans of Blue Ivy’s hair 9for better or worse). In Beyonce’s recent maternity photos, Blue Ivy was seen sporting cute braids, could this also be a hint? We’re anxious to see!
