Nairaland / General / Kerosene Still Not Available Nationwide by DKbarry(m): 7:25am On Jan 15, 2017
*As Nigerians Turn To Firewood • Delays In Vessels Discharge Cause Of Gas Shortage – NLNG

There was pandemonium in Canaan area of Ago Palace Way, Lagos, Monday morning, when fire ignited by a housewife to prepare meal for her family was mistaken for fire outbreak.

Hajia Halima had woken up that morning to prepare meal for her family when she discovered that the last drop of kerosene in her stove was used the previous day for the same purpose. She took the empty gallon and went straight to kerosene vendor only to be told that the same product, which she bought about a week ago at N800, is now being sold at N1, 800.

As soon as she ignited the firewood, her neigbours expressed concerns, thinking that there was fire outbreak. “I did not have any money with me and my husband who is the security guide in this building had gone out for some urgent assignment. There was no point waiting for him to return before preparing mail for my children, so I quickly gathered some sticks together and within few minutes the meal was ready. It was unfortunate that the smoke and the fire caused uproar in the area. It is better than staying without food because kerosene is expensive.

Cooking with firewood is better for my family now because we do not need to buy the wood, as we can easily gather them from the building sites around here.”

For Halima, that was a cheap alternative to tackle the kerosene scarcity. But for Madam Ngozi Ibe, a restaurant operator in the same area who uses cooking gas for her business, the alternative to gas, which is kerosene, is even more expensive than cooking gas.

She said: “As you are aware, there is also scarcity of cooking gas. Normally, we switch to kerosene whenever there is hike in the price of cooking gas. But we could not do so this time around, as the price of both products is no longer within the reach of a common man.”

In the wake of the current scarcity, the price of cooking gas across major gas plants had risen from N3, 500 for 12.5kg cylinder as at December to N4, 500 for the same quantity.

Ngozi said that she decided to continue the use of gas, even though it is expensive and pass the cost to her customers. “We cannot even consider firewood as it has also become very expensive.”

She urged government to do something about it to make life more bearable for the masses.

Kerosene, which is daily used to power stoves in most Nigerian homes, has become prohibitive in most homes and other users of the product across the nation.

The unsavoury state of affairs has forced many households into resorting to firewood and charcoal for cooking in spite of the health and environmental hazards.

The Guardian findings showed that despite assurance from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that they are going make kerosene available and at a normal rate, a gallon of kerosene still sells for N1, 800 as against the N700, normal times.

There are also reports of adulteration of kerosene, a dangerous and sometimes explosive mix capable of causing destruction to properties and human beings.

Even at that, most filling stations did not have the products as at Friday, last week. For instance, all the filling stations, such as Conoil, Mobil, Total and Oando, were still out of stock as yesterday in Lagos.

Giving reasons for the scarcity of cooking gas, the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), attributed it to the delays in vessel discharges at the receiving facilities in Apapa, Lagos, saying the situation had led to a temporary supply disruption over the last two to three weeks.

The company said in a statement that NLNG’s dedicated LPG vessel had been unable to discharge LPG at the Apapa port since December 29, 2016, due to jetty unavailability, resulting in temporary product shortages in the market.

On rise in price, Nigeria LNG in a statement signed by General Manager, External Relations, Kudo Eresia-Eke, said price is based on an international price index plus 50 per cent of the shipping cost of delivering the product to receiving facilities in Apapa, Lagos.

“The reality of this is that although LPG is produced and consumed locally, the product, like crude oil, is an internationally traded commodity with an international price benchmark, open to global demand and supply pressures.

“NLNG however softens the impact of price variations by continuing to subsidise the cost of transporting about 40 per cent of total domestic market share, which it supplies from its production facility on Bonny Island.”

The Executive Secretary of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMAN), Olufemi Adewole, attributed the scarcity and hike in prices of kerosene and diesel products to the shortage of foreign exchange.

According to him, the primary challenge with kerosene scarcity is basically on foreign exchange.

Adewole said: “There is shortage of foreign exchange for marketers to import the petroleum products and kerosene is usually scarce and expensive during winter period abroad.

“The winter period also contributed to the challenge because prices of petroleum products usually rise during this period.

“There is higher demand for petroleum products outside the country than in Nigeria.

“It is well known in the international oil industry that during winter, that there are more concentration on some particular products and it is usually very expensive to import such products.”

He therefore, urged the Federal Government to provide adequate foreign exchange to marketers to enable them import and increase supply, adding that the development would lead to reduction in the prices of petroleum products.

The National Operations Controller, Independent Petroleum Manufacturers of Nigeria (IPMAN), Mike Osatuyi, said members do not have foreign exchange to import kerosene and diesel.

Osatuyi said that IPMAN relied solely on the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for supply.

The operations controller called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to take a second look on its policy on foreign exchange and urged the Federal Government to fully deregulate petroleum products.

Osatuyi said: “The issue is that, it is not available, secondly, most of our refineries are not loading it now. Even if they load, they will be selling it at exorbitant rate to marketers. Members cannot import because of forex and besides, kerosene is not fully deregulated.
It is not like diesel. Kerosene and petrol are not fully deregulated.”

A statement signed by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Ndu Ughamadu, said the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) resumed production, with the plant’s CDU functioning.

The Managing Director of the WRPC, Solomon Ladenegan, stated that the plant had been doing well since the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) was revved up on Saturday, January 7, 2017.

Nairaland / General / Some FCT Residents Express Concern Over Fraud On Instagram by DKbarry(m): 7:15am On Jan 15, 2017
Abuja – Some residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday expressed concern over the rise in use of Instagram, a social media platform to defraud unsuspecting users.

The platform, which is popularly used to connect friends and family by sharing personal photos and videos on the internet has gradually become an for business activities.

Large-scale businesses have used the site to showcase goods and services available for sale inspiring start-up entrepreneurs to follow suit with an online market that does not require an official website or established shop.

However, the business concept has been observed to have been soiled by individuals creating fake business accounts to acquire money from users fradulently.

Some of the residents, who spoke to NAN, claimed to had fallen victim to some of the fake business accounts available on the social media website.

Miss Hope Idemudia, a Nigerian youth service corps member serving in Abuja, said that she had lost a lot of money to the owner of a fake business account on Instagram.

“Instagram is known to be a market place, where people market themselves and their products so it’s not just for making friends and sharing pictures with social circles.

“There are a number of accounts I have successfully purchased goods from and I got the orders in perfect condition.

“However, the last order I placed was highly unsuccessful, causing me a loss of N24,000 and I was very bitter about it.

“I came across an Instagram account known as @Empire_ladies_store which like other accounts looked very legitimate and I decided to order for clothes and shoes.

“I paid the money as requested and I still haven’t received my goods up til this very moment.

“The account owner stopped picking my calls and responding to my messages after that,” she said

Miss Tosin Oloruntoba, an entrepreneur said she had come across a number of fake business accounts that she almost fell victim to.

“The Instagram business pages have become very popular and it seems to be odd if you’re a business owner and you don’t have a business page on Instagram.

“Many of these sellers prove their legitimacy by posting pictures of feedback from customers they have deals with in the past and having people review their goods.

“I require the same for my business pages and I came across a business page called @dressupclothier which had thousands of posts and followers so I believed the page was legitimate.

“I placed an order for shoes that I was to give as gift to my daughter and I never received them.

“I knew I was scammed when the owner refused to answer my calls, but always read my messages in Whatsapp without replying.

“I am just saddened by the fact that these scam artists will destroy the reputation of other businesses that are actually legitimate.”

George Ogba, an accountant, said “it is sad that these people are committing such crimes and there really isn’t anyway to directly block their accounts from the public as the account has to be reported to Instagram first.”

“As much as we try to trust our fellow Nigerians, there are bad people who are making that impossible by committing these grivious crimes so we have to stop acting naïve.

“There is no reason why you should make payments for a commodity you have not seen or received, although it has worked with many other legitimate accounts.

“If you want to purchase something online, ensure you are protecting yourself by having a middle man of some sort or ensure you pay for the commodity on delivery,” he said. (NAN).

Nairaland / General / 25,800 Unaccompanied Children From Nigeria, 3 Others, Arrived Italy In 2016 by DKbarry(m): 7:05am On Jan 15, 2017
No fewer than 25,800 unaccompanied or separated children mainly from four African countries – Egypt, Eritrea, Nigeria and the Gambia — arrived Italy by sea in 2016, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says.

Lucio Melandri, the Senior Emergency Manager at UNICEF, said the number of children arriving in Italy by themselves via the sea in 2016 more than doubled that of 2015, according to the statement.

“In 2016, some 25,800 unaccompanied or separated children arrived in the European country, compared to the 12,360 who arrived in 2015.

“These children, arriving by themselves also accounted for a staggering 91 per cent of all the 28,200 children who reached Italy’s shores last year as refugees or migrants.

“A majority among of such arrivals were from Eritrea, Egypt, the Gambia and Nigeria.

“That’s more than double the number of 2015,” Melandri said.

The UNICEF official called for urgent and special measures to protect the children from trafficking, exploitation and abuse.

“These figures indicate an alarming trend of an increasing number of highly vulnerable children risking their lives to get to Europe.

“Current systems in place are failing to protect them as they find themselves alone in a completely unfamiliar environment,” he added.

He called for a coordinated European response given that the children were on the move.

“Apart from addressing the factors that are forcing children to travel alone, a comprehensive protection, monitoring system needs to be developed to protect them,” he stressed.

The UNICEF official said that the figures indicated an alarming trend of an increasing number of highly vulnerable children risking their lives to get to Europe.

“While most of the children were boys aged 15 to 17 years, younger children and girls have also been among the new arrivals,” he said.

Similarly, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said it had stepped up assistance in several European countries which are experiencing harsh winter conditions.

“In Greece, hundreds of people have been transferred to better accommodation in Lesvos and Chios over the past few days.

“In Serbia, some 1,200 males still stay in inadequate informal sites in Belgrade city centre, including up to 300 unaccompanied or separated boys.

“UNHCR is extremely concerned by reports that several refugees and migrants have lost their lives trying to enter or move across Europe, including five since the beginning of the year due to the freezing weather,” he said. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Florida Airport Shooting Suspect Faces Charges With Possible Death Penalty by DKbarry(m): 9:36am On Jan 08, 2017
US authorities on Saturday charged the Iraq war veteran accused in a deadly shooting rampage at the Fort Lauderdale airport with offenses that could carry the death penalty, while continuing to probe whether terrorism was a potential motive.

Esteban Santiago, 26, was accused of killing five, wounding six and sending thousands scrambling for safety on Friday before authorities shut down the airport in Florida, a major gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America.

Federal prosecutors charged Santiago with firearms offenses and carrying out an act of violence at an airport, US Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said in a statement. If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life in prison.

The suspect was scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Monday.

Murder charges could be forthcoming from state prosecutors, but no decision has been made yet, a spokesman for Broward County State Attorney Mike Satz told the local Sun Sentinel newspaper.

Santiago had traveled from Alaska to Fort Lauderdale on Friday. After retrieving a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and ammunition that he had declared and stowed inside his checked luggage, he allegedly loaded the weapon in a bathroom and opened fire in the crowded baggage claim area of Terminal 2.

"Santiago started shooting, aiming at his victims' heads until he was out of ammunition," Ferrer said.

FBI special agent George Piro said law enforcement was continuing to investigate motives for the attack, including "continuing to look at the terrorism angle."

Piro said the suspect appeared to be acting alone and that "every indication is that he did follow (Transportation Security Administration) procedures in flying with the weapon."

The gunman was detained without law enforcement having to fire any shots, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said.

'Erratic' A former member of the Puerto Rico and Alaska National Guard, Santiago served in Iraq from April 2010 to February 2011. He ended his service in August.

An aunt, Maria Luisa Ruiz, told the NorthJersey.com news site that Santiago became a father to a baby boy in September -- and that he was having mental problems.

"Like a month ago, it was like he lost his mind," Ruiz said. "He said he saw things."

On November 7, Santiago walked into the FBI's Anchorage office and complained that his mind was being controlled by national intelligence agencies, which were forcing him to watch Islamic State jihadist videos, authorities said.

The "erratic behavior" led agents to contact local police, who took him to a medical facility for a mental health evaluation, Piro said.

He was not placed on a no-fly list. Anchorage police chief Christopher Tolley said Santiago came to the FBI office with a loaded magazine, but left his gun and newborn child in his car.

Santiago's weapon was taken by police for safekeeping at the time, and he was able to reclaim it on December 8.

Tolley said it was not known whether it was the same gun used in the rampage in Fort Lauderdale.

Santiago's brother, Bryan, criticized the way authorities handled his case.

"They had him hospitalized for four days and they let him go. How are you going to let someone leave a psychological center after four days when he said he hears voices that the CIA is telling him to join certain groups?" Bryan Santiago told CNN, in a Spanish-language interview the network translated into English.

"Not everyone has the same reaction when they return from war. Some are better, and some, not so much."

Authorities have not identified any victims, but three named in media reports were all getting ready to set off on cruises.

They included 84-year-old grandmother Olga Woltering of Marietta, Georgia, the Sun Sentinel reported. The British native and her 90-year-old husband were going on a cruise with family to celebrate his birthday.

"Olga was so charming, calling everybody 'Lovey' or 'Love' in her unmistakable British accent," the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, where Woltering was an active member, said on its website.

Terry Andres, 62, was going on vacation with his wife of nearly four decades, Ann, the Palm Beach Post reported. He lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia and worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Michael and Kari Oehme, in their 50s from Council Bluffs, Iowa, were both shot, the Miami Herald said. Michael Oehme was killed, while his wife was wounded in the shoulder.

Checking weapons The shooting renewed anxieties about airport security -- a concern that has loomed large in the post-9/11 era -- and shed new light on ongoing US gun-control debates.

The Transportation Security Administration -- the agency responsible for security at United States airports -- allows passengers to travel with unloaded firearms and ammunition as checked baggage.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who represents the Florida district that includes the airport, said the rules need to be reexamined.

Speaking to CNN, she said the incident should prompt close review of "whether or not you should be allowed to check a firearm at all" -- as well as how passengers should be able to retrieve checked weapons after landing.

"If there is still exposure to the traveling public of someone who wishes to do them harm and, like this individual, was reunited with their firearm and was able to wreak havoc... it absolutely needs to be addressed."

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, rebuked the government for not taking legislative action to tighten gun laws.

"Political cowardice is the accomplice of every mass shooter," he wrote on Twitter.

The Fort Lauderdale airport was open Saturday and staff were trying to return nearly 20,000 pieces of luggage and other personal items abandoned by passengers fleeing the shooting.

Nairaland / General / Conte To Recall Ake From Bournemouth Loan.. by DKbarry(m): 9:27am On Jan 08, 2017
Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has admitted he is considering recalling Nathan Ake from his loan spell at Bournemouth.

The 21-year-old defender has started in eight of the Cherries’ last nine matches – he was not eligible to face the Blues.

Conte has been impressed with Ake and could decided to activate the call-back clause inserted in the deal which took him to Bournemouth.

“Ake is a really good player and now in the last games he has started to play with Bournemouth and is playing every game,” Conte said.

“Honestly, I’m evaluating his situation, because Ake could be an interesting opportunity in this window for us.”

Bournemouth manager, Eddie Howe, has however admitted that Ake’s return is almost done.

“It looks like that will be the case,” Howe said.

“It’s not 100 per cent finalised yet. “It’s easier said than done to say we are going to recruit a player in similar stature to Nathan and I’m not sure there’s too many out there.

“So that’s going to be a difficult one for us, but we will assess our options and try and make the right decisions.”

Foreign Affairs / US Orders Families Of Embassy Personnel Out Of Gambia by DKbarry(m): 8:31am On Jan 08, 2017
Accra - The West African regional bloc stands with the people of Gambia and will apply diplomatic solutions to solve the country's political crisis, the body's chair said on Saturday.

The Economic Community of west African States has before threatened to send troops led by neighbouring Senegal to Gambia if President Yahya Jammeh does not step down when his mandate ends on January 19.

The longtime leader lost a December 1 election to opposition coalition candidate Adama Barrow.

Jammeh initially conceded, but later called for a new vote.

The United Nations, the United States, the European Union and others have united in criticising him.

Jammeh's party filed a petition to the country's Supreme Court against the election, and a key court ruling is expected January 10.

Liberia President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said on Saturday the West African bloc, which she chairs, hopes diplomacy will help democracy prevail in Gambia.

"We want to apply diplomatic solutions to solve the problem," Sirleaf said.

Asked if troops would be moved into Gambia she responded, "No, we want to keep the region peaceful."

However, in recognition of the solidifying crisis, the United States on Saturday advised American citizens not to travel to Gambia "because of the potential for civil unrest and violence in the near future."

The US State Department also ordered relatives of diplomats and embassy staff to leave Gambia and warned all its citizens to depart now, saying those who choose to stay should "prepare for the possible deterioration of security."

Sirleaf spoke at the inauguration of Ghana's new president, where she met with other leaders from the regional bloc known as Ecowas.

President Nana Akufo-Addo was sworn into office in Ghana's capital on Saturday in a peaceful transition following the election last month in which he defeated the incumbent.

"We call on the people of Gambia to follow the example of Ghana by accepting democratic rule," Sirleaf said.

Sirleaf said West Africa cannot go back to a time when most countries were under military rule.

Jammeh seized power in a bloodless coup in 1994, and his administration has been accused of gross human rights violations including arbitrary detentions and deaths in custody of political opponents.

Nairaland / General / In Nigeria’s Capital Arrested – SSS by DKbarry(m): 8:31pm On Dec 30, 2016
The State Security Service, SSS, said it has uncovered a criminal gang which specialises in robbing foreigners, either visiting or living in Abuja.

Members of the gang who robbed an expatriate in a high brow hotel in Abuja and carted away his money and other valuables, have been arrested, the agency also called DSS, said on Friday.

According to a statement by one Tony Opuiyo for the agency, two of the gang members, Ikechukwu Obadlegwu and Ikechukwu Eke, are in the net.

While Mr. Obadlegwu carried out surveillance on potential targets for the group, Mr. Eke is the kingpin and mastermind of the whole operation, the agency said.

The agency said it has almost recovered all the stolen items.

Business / Re: Football Betting System That Guarantees No Loss Of Bet Capital And Steady Profit by DKbarry(m): 12:05am On Feb 24, 2015
SolutionTipster:
The main aim for this thread is to educate fellow nairalanders on the more right ways and mentality for following football betting.

From my observations, many people bet just for the sake of betting and without a defined purpose. But losing money by gambling isn't that enjoyable, that is the truth. Treat your betting like a business and you can start to turn losses into profits. That's far more fun!

The bookmaker (betting site) is a business, they treat their betting like a business, and if we (bettors) are to have any chance of doing business to our benefit with them, we have to act like we are doing business too.

More than 70% of bettors in Nigeria do not always have anything to account for at the end of each betting week, month, or year. It is not actually because they do not earnestly need the ca$h in football betting world or maybe something is pursuing them from the village or the luck is against them(general belief of a typical Naija...lol), rather, it is mainly because they have not adopted the right attitudinal mentality towards betting.

For you to succeed in this business, you must have a clearly outlined strategy and a betting plan. You don't just bet because others are betting! There's a bit of luck in this business, i agree, but your survival depends on your betting system. The system involves your do and donts - the more rightful way you must maintain your betting business whether lose or win.

I'm definitely not perfect, but I've tested the success in this business. I'm ready to share, and it is in this thread.

Some of the things I'll be sharing here include:

1. Most accurate way to predict home and away win matches including some leagues you're very likely to see banker matches
2. Draw match prediction strategies, top draw match leagues, my experiences.
3. Over and under prediction strategies, top leagues to find them, my experiences.
4. Corner betting, best prediction strategies, Teams to look out for, My honest advice.
5. Live Betting; do and donts, my experiences and honest advice.
6. Football betting terms and their respective meanings. This will help you manage your betting journey more meticulously
7. Any Question at all? Ask and we shall discourse it.
8. My premium betting tips to you free of charge, but not every day o. It'll be coming from time to time here for your merriment.

It is not a day issue, but I'll be treating them one by one. Keep your eye on this thread, let us learn together, let us walk the walk that works.
