Computers / Britain Who Hacked Yahoo In 2012 Sentenced To Two Years In Prison. by dlux: 10:52am On Sep 26, 2016
Nazariy Markuta, 23, of Harlesden, London, will spend the next two years in prison for hacking several companies, including Yahoo, as a member of the D33ds Company hacking crew.

A UK judge passed the sentence on Thursday, the same day Yahoo admitted to a massive data breach during which an unknown attacker stole details for 500 million users.

Yahoo blamed this incident on a “state-sponsored actor,” and said the intrusion took place in 2014.

Markuta hacked Yahoo! Voice in 2012

The incident Markuta was accused of happened in 2012 when the hacker and others breached servers belonging to the Yahoo! Voice service and stole the personal details of over 450,000 users.

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) says Markuta used an SQL injection flaw to breach the servers and stole emails and passwords, which he later dumped online via his hacking outfit’s forum, where he was an administrator.

The data contained the 453,492 email addresses and plaintext passwords, and they were uploaded online in a document marked “Owned and Exposed.”

NCA said they also found thousands of credit and debit card records in Markuta’s possession after searching his house.

Markuta’s multiple prison sentences will run concurrently

A judge at Southwark Crown Court sentenced Markuta to a total of 11 years and three months in prison. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning the hacker will only serve a maximum of two years in prison.

Markuta pleaded guilty to two offenses under the Serious Crime Act 2007, three offenses under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, and three offenses under the Fraud Act 2006.

UK police and the FBI collaborated to track down Markuta, and they arrested him at his house in Harlesden in March 2015. His arrest was part of a series of 25 raids across England, Scotland, and Wales, during which police detained 57 members for various hacking offenses.

Gaming / Hack Found On Recent Update Of Street Fighters Game On Windows Pcs by dlux: 10:41am On Sep 26, 2016
A game update for Street Fighter V unwittingly opened a huge security hole on all Windows PCs it was installed on, according to numerous complaints from users on Reddit.

Capcom, the game's maker, issued an update to Street Fighter V on Thursday, announcing a brand new anti-cheat system.

“ As a part of the new content and system update releasing later today, we’re also rolling out an updated anti-crack solution (note: not DRM) that prevents certain users from hacking the executable. The solution also prevents memory address hack that are commonly used for cheating and illicitly obtaining in-game currency and other entitlements that haven’t been purchased yet. ”

“ The anti-crack solution does not require online connectivity in order to play the game in offline mode; however, players will be required to click-confirm each time they boot up the game. This step allows ‘handshake’ to take place between the executable and the dependent driver prior to launch. ”

This new anti-cheat system wasn't just a game update, as it also included a new driver that needed to be installed on players' PCs.

""Game update requiring special permissions" alerted users"

Because the update required OS-level access, some users were prompted for additional permissions when installing it, which led some more technically inclined gamers to investigate what was going on.

To their surprise, the game was installing a kernel-level access driver called capcom.sys, which was disabling a key security feature of their Windows operating system in order to peek inside the kernel for code specific to known cheating tools and methods.

The problem, as Reddit user extrwi explained, was that anyone that passed the control codes 0xAA012044 and 0xAA013044 to this driver would be able to disable the SMEP (Supervisor Mode Execution Protection) kernel protection feature and take over the device.

"Game maker rolls back update"

After some of the techies that discovered this flaw posted their findings on Reddit and caused a huge ruckus in the gaming community, on Friday, Capcom admitted to its blunder and decided to roll back the shoddy update, ASAP.

“ We are in the process of rolling back the security measures added to the PC version of Street Fighter V. After the rollback process to the PC version, all new content from the September update will still be available to players. We apologize for the inconvenience and will have an update on the time-frame for the PC rollback solution soon. ”

Technology Market / Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 Officially Released For All Its Mobile Phones by dlux: 8:01am On Sep 23, 2016
We reported yesterday about the upcoming availability of the Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 software update for Ubuntu Phone and Ubuntu Tablet devices, and it looks like Canonical finally started the phased update earlier today.

Canonical’s Lukasz Zemczak informs us that the main OTA-13 images have been successfully copied from the rc-proposed channel to the stable one for users to update but, as expected, it’s phased during the next 24 hours, so not everyone will get it at the same time.

Therefore, if you don’t see the OTA-13 update on your supported Ubuntu Phone or Ubuntu Tablet device (see below for a complete list), try again in a few hours, or tomorrow. Canonical promises that the Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 software update will arrive for all users on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at the latest.

“We have just copied all main OTA-13 images to the stable channels and started the phased upgrade procedures as with every release. This should take less then a whole day and all users should see the update on their phones tomorrow at latest,” says Lukasz Zemczak, Canonical Foundations.

"Supported Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 devices"

As for the supported devices, all the existing Ubuntu Phones, including BQ Aquaris E4.5, BQ Aquaris E5, Meizu MX4, and Meizu PRO 5 are supported, as well as the BQ Aquaris M10 and BQ Aquaris M10 HD Ubuntu tablets. Canonical also supports the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 devices as Ubuntu Phones, so you can update them to OTA-13 as well.

If you’re running Ubuntu Touch on a different device that’s most probably supported by the team over at Ubports, you’ll receive the OTA-13 update as well, but we don’t know if this will happen right now or in a few days. To see the new features implemented in the Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 update, check out our previous report.

Phones / Whatsapp May Incorporate Passcode And Recovery Email Options by dlux: 7:38am On Sep 23, 2016
WhatsApp is surely one of the most popular chat applications out there and it certainly has many advantages over other apps available on the market. Android Authority has just reported that the app could receive an important update in the near future.

The report mentions that WhatsApp could soon come with six-digit passcodes to help restrict access inside the application. The passcode is a useful option, considering that many other apps give users the tools to limit access so that their information is protected and the privacy of their messages isn’t subjected to any risks.

Android Authority reports that the new details were hinted at in a text translation program for WhatsApp, where users were required to translate strings from English to Dutch. The text clearly hinted at new six-digit passcodes and recovery email address options in WhatsApp.

It suggests that the recovery email could be optional, but it could help users avoid being locked out of their accounts. User accounts are linked to phone numbers, but there are cases in which users could get locked out of their accounts and no longer get access to messages.

It’s unclear at this point if six-digit passcodes will be optional or mandatory, but chances are users will be able to decide whether they wish to implement this extra security option.

WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption for messages by default, unlike other chat applications like Google’s recent Allo. However, WhatsApp has recently announced that it will share phone numbers with Facebook for advertising purposes, but there’s a way to avoid that.

Phones / Review Of Apple's Iphone 7 And Its Features by dlux: 10:37am On Sep 22, 2016
If you have a beloved pair of wired headphones, however, prepare to be seriously pissed off and thoroughly put out by the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Sure, you can use the included 3.5mm to Lightning adapter, but dongles aren’t exactly high-class. It’s small, so you could easily lose it, and the wire connection between the 3.5mm port and the Lightning connector feels flimsy. Much like the included iPhone charging cords, which always break after a year or two, we suspect this adapter may not have the longest life. We shall see.

It certainly is nice that Apple included the adapter; it’s just a shame that it’s so flimsy. But on the bright side, the dongle didn’t impact the sound quality in any obvious way.

The wired earbuds that come with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus sound reasonably good for included headphones, but they’re not discernably better than the typical 3.5mm earbuds that have shipped with iPhones past. Of our two sets of EarPods, one stopped working properly after a day, forcing us to repeatedly plug them in and jiggle them to try and get them to work – like a very old set of earbuds. They broke for us on day two, which makes us very concerned about the Lightning port as an alternative to the audio jack.

The lack of a headphone jack also prompted Apple to improve wireless audio — the result is the W1 wireless chip. It’s implemented in another new Apple product, the AirPods, which are completely wireless and get 5 hours of battery life. They aren’t included in the box, and you can read more about the $160 wireless earbuds here. We tried a pair on and they are exactly like EarPods, just without the cord and somewhat sillier looking. You can also use any normal wireless headphones with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus; check out our favorites here.

Although there aren’t many lightning connected headphones out yet, we expect many more will come in the following months. We’ve already reviewed a pair from Audeze, which sound great.

The other bright spot on the audio front is that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have stereo speakers — both at the top and bottom of the devices for “increased dynamic range.” The speakers do sound better and louder on the iPhone 7 Plus, though they aren’t as powerful as the front-facing speakers on the ZTE Axon 7 or the older HTC One phones.
Subtle aluminum design is finally water-resistant

The iPhone 7 Plus doesn’t look all that different from last year’s iPhone 6S Plus — you’ll have to wait for next year’s iPhone 7S/8 for major changes, and rumors are already plentiful.

Although the aluminum uni-body design is nearly identical to last year’s iPhone, that’s not to say it isn’t beautiful. The metal is soft and smooth, and the Apple logo shines out of the center back of the phone. The antenna lines now curve around the corners instead of slashing across the back of the phone, resulting in a cleaner, more minimalistic appearance. The dual-camera module sticks out on the back, making it look quite similar to LG’s G5.
Apple introduced two new color options this year: Black and Jet Black. Jet Black features a “pristine, mirror-like surface” and a high-gloss, which is sadly prone to scratches. It also picks up fingerprints like nobody’s business. The Jet Black model is as fingerprint-prone as any glass-backed Galaxy S7, and that’s a real shame. It looks so pretty until you touch it; then it’s covered in oily smears. Personally, I hate fingerprint-covered phones and I much prefer the matte Black finish. Apple still offers silver, gold, and rose gold for traditionalists who don’t want the new black models.

Unfortunately, the iPhone 7 Plus is still gigantic. When you compare it to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which has the same 5.5-inch screen, it looks positively monstrous in size. The bezels at the top and bottom of the phone are overlarge, and slimming them down would make the phone far more manageable. The iPhone 7 Plus’ footprint could be much smaller, which would appeal to more users and be more comfortable to hold.

It’s not that the iPhone 7 Plus is uncomfortably large – it’s about the same size as a Nexus 6P or the LG V20 – but it’s definitely a device you want to hold with two hands after a while. That said, I have small hands, and the iPhone 7 Plus is still the one I’d choose between the two 7s.

The biggest cosmetic difference (besides the removal of the headphone jack) is that both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are (finally!) water- and dust-resistant with an IP67 rating. That means you’ll be able to take either of them under up to 1 meter of water for about 30 minutes. The water resistance level isn’t as high on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus as it is on the Galaxy S7 and most other water-resistant phones, all of which support IP68 water and dust resistance. The difference is that you can submerge the Galaxy S7 in 5 meters of water versus 1 meter with the iPhone 7. But unless you literally swim with your phone, it’s really not a huge deal. Still, it’s a shame that Apple’s water resistance rating is lower.

We dunked both iPhones in a beer stein full of water to see if they’d pass the test, and they did with flying colors. Both were fully operational after several submersion tests. We even played music on the iPhone 7 Plus while it was underwater in the glass, and it pumped out sound like normal. If anything, the speakers sounded better with the amplification of the glass and water.

Computers / Today 24th August Marks 24 Successful Years Of Linux Operating System. by dlux: 11:15pm On Aug 26, 2016
Its coming late but better than never. The Linux operating system clocks 24 years of growth and success. Linux is a free Operating System for most of it which happens to the best for running servers and mainstream computers. Amazon, Google, Yahoo New York Stock exchange, Tokyo Stock Exchange, The Nigerian Stock Exchange and popular big boys all rely on Linux especially the commercial based Red Hat for Maximum productivity. Happy birthday Linux and watch out for more improvements as Steam OS rolled out Gaming Software on its Debian based Linux OS like never before. Before now, Linux developers did little in the area of gaming to compete with Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows as it was basically used to manage servers, run security scan and network services. Linux Desktop is more secure, stable and not as easy to use as other OS. I use Fedora, Red Hat, Ubuntu and Kali Linux. Visit http://gtbensmag.com to get more news on Linux and core IT
