Following the claims going round the media space that the Honourable Commissioner for Science and Technology Innovation, Gombe state, Dr. Aishatu Maigari made a statement, stating that "she withdrew her kids from a Muslim dominated school" had drawn the attention of the National President, Northern Christian Youth Association of Nigeria (NCYAN), Mr. Michael Musa Shekarau who insisted that the claims are false and his visit must not be given a different narrative.

In a press conference in Kaduna state, on Friday, Shekarau said, "Dr. Aishatu Maigari was awarded an Icon of interfaith and unity in Gombe state during the northern peace tour because she has proven to be in that category of peace building in a region that is consumed by religious intolerance and segregation."

"The honourable commissioner is no doubt faithful to her faith and to the Muslim umma. Interestingly, she respects other Faith's and that is very critical and important in sustaining peaceful coexistence in Gombe state, northern Nigeria and the country at large."

"We respect her doggedness in actions and in character and respect for other people's beliefs. This could just be the reason why those who nominated her for the award (Students in Gombe state University) saw her worthy." Shekarau added;

In the words of Louis Farrakhan, “You cannot reform the devil… all the prophets tried and failed, you have to kill the devil”. In this case scenario; what more could a devil do than what has been done to the good people of Kada’ state.

Inciting violence, promoting bad behavior, denial of rights and much more in most cases led to uprising and unfortunate murder of innocent citizens and destruction of properties, therefore, allowing the people to live in continuous fear.


It all began when a new administration resumed to take charge of affairs, 29th May, 2015. They came in on a wave of hope and change, they were sworn in on strong institutions, also, were laws in place to maintain immense level of stability, not disputing the fact that there were few challenges already but well managed in the most reasonable ways possible… importantly for social, political and economic balance in terms of power play.


Four years past, the state of Kada has experienced severe plagues in harsh and unacceptable manners. It is undebatable to the fact that the government with a responsibility to protect the citizens is now undoubtedly the number one enemy of the people. How did this happen?


TRUTH
The head of the government of Kada state is no doubt a total failure… he has expressed himself over and over again as one who is dangerously biased, a fanatic with no capacity for any form of conflict resolution even as he does what he knows best (Inciting violence). The fact is, he’s got to have an extraordinary explanation for continuously and deliberately causing chaos by all means possible in ways such as encouraging hoodlums to go against political opponents, sponsoring thugs to generate crises and that which caught the eyes of the world was an appearance on national television to proudly claim the responsibility for the payment of several billions of tax payer’s money to some militia at the time of crises in a terrorized area of the state.


The most recent trends are the unfortunate comments made and designed to incite violence in the buildup to the 2019 general elections {Body bags threats and faking the death of 66 people}. Under his administration, propaganda and staged up news has always been an essential weapon in his arsenals especially when he fails to have his way by the ethnic/religious cards as usual. This becomes so unappealing to the people and particularly, the marginalized and oppressed in kada state. For the so called ‘leader’, who cares less to give attention to principles of cause and effects with respect to ethno-religious settings that’s been in place over time, the challenges, and also, considering the timing of events. “The Kada head of government is the founder, peddler and merchant of fake news in Nigeria” (Danjuma Sarki, 16th Feb 2019).


While they are making dangerous political decisions that is catastrophic to the people, the populace is totally committed towards collectively solving ‘problems’ irrespective of religious believes, ethnicity or political affiliation caused by desperate men calling for a bloodbath only to escape judgement day on the ballot. Good news is, the people are united and can’t be manipulated against themselves –He came up with the Muslim/Muslim ticket to try evolve the biased approach, a concept none of his predecessors had the political will’ mainly because of its effects to cordial relationship between the factors as well as peaceful coexistence.


The people, of course will not resort to violence despite the fact that the devil is moving all around trying to kick start a war. This concept is to apply the ideals to practical, political situations… While they come to steal and destroy a great nation by hate speeches, tyranny, training and paying militias to kill, they will always fail for as long as the people understands the common enemy and his tactics.


Now is a time that neither can they kill nor enslave the people because it is clearer even to the blind that the commander in chief of Kada state has an agenda, which is simply to destroy the progress made on peace, security, unity and governance in the past years by previous administrations.


As Zbigniew Brzezinski (former US National Security Adviser) once said, “In earlier times, it was literally easier to control a million people than to physically kill a million people… today, it is infinitely easier to kill a million people than to control a million people”. The message is simple, the devil can’t control the fate of millions when they’ve all decided on one common goal… no matter how hard the scheme is planned to destroy the good that can come to the people with proper governance, they are losing or they will lose, they have set up a trap and are getting caught in their own trap. Kada people are waking up and the world is indeed watching the rise of a revolution that will kill the enemy by kicking them out. it is a revolution that is all too real.

*MAKARFI_LEGACY: PEACE AND SECURITY IN KADUNA STATE (PART 1)*


When the Makarfi’s administration came into being in 1999, it inherited several peace threatening problems, some of which had in fact led to violent eruptions in the past. The most sensitive of these was the bottled up tension and mutual disrupt arising from accusations of dominations of one section of the state by the other, particularly as it related to traditional institutions and their headship vis-à-vis complaints of domination as well as the uneven distribution of physical and other infrastructure. Agitations for self-determination by various communities were reaching a crescendo. The government therefore decided to confront and address the issue so that an enabling environment for development could be engendered. At the end of the day, additional chiefdoms and 342 districts were created and developments have largely been evenly distributed across the state thereby substantially silencing the cries of marginalization and neglect.  

The Makarfi government of Kaduna state also was quick to rise to the occasion when crises erupted as a result of the clamor for and against the establishment of the sharia legal system. Given the multi-ethnic and multi-religious nature of the state and seemingly uncompromising positions adopted by both sides of the debate, government had to decisively wade in by coming up with a legal/judicial system that took the complexion of the state into account, such that both Muslims and Christians and in fact traditionalists have all been afforded a system that enables them adjudicate according to their beliefs and customs, within the confines of the provisions of the nation’s constitution. The tripartite legal system introduced by the Kaduna state government, which is now being studied by several other states provides for sharia for Muslims and the customary court for non-Muslims as well as retaining the existing common law system. It has gone a very long way in giving all sections of the state a sense of belonging. In addition to this, a consultative committee chaired by Ahmed Makarfi himself, consists of Muslim and Christian religious leaders from all parts of the state, as well as heads of security agencies. It meets regularly to discuss and nip in the bud, potential peace breaching problems. A high point of the rapprochement between adherents of the Muslim and Christian faiths in the state was the production of the document on religious peace and understanding signed by prominent Islamic and Christian leaders in the state.

Makarfi’s government has also created two bureaus for religious affairs, one each for Muslim and Christian matters, under the governor’s office and each handed by the permanent secretary to coordinate the activities of the two religions and liaise between them and the government in order to endanger the harmonious coexistence and greater understanding.

The government also ensured that the security agencies operating in the state, though federally controlled, are given the necessary logistical and other assistance to enable them effectively provide security to the people. The state government has apart from other assistance, purchased and distributed to security agencies in the state a number of vehicles to ease their operations.

Makarfi is the first governor in the North that used Police and Army to protect ALL citizens of the state. So much so that killers said his name is really JOHN and that he is a CHRISTIAN! Forgive me to say that at a time that our nation is troubled by ethnic and religious disputes, farmers/herdsmen crises, Niger-Delta Militia amongst many more that has been slowing down economic progress and most importantly, our peaceful coexistence as a united Nigeria. It is indeed important to look forward on how best to “FIX IT” …Although, the current administration under the leadership of President Buhari had tried to put an end to insecurity problems but with little positive results to show. Could it be that the President and his security team have been busy fighting shadows and NOT tackling the main CAUSE of insecurity in the land?

As progressive Nigerians, our main concern is to see a peaceful and United Nigeria free of conflicts and insurgency… However, haven made investigations on post democracy conflicts across the nation and how leaders tackled such, it came to a conclusion that no leader had been so resolute with time towards promoting peaceful coexistence not only in his region or state but the entire nation as SEN. AHMED MAKARFI (SAM) who was governor of Kaduna state from 1999-2007, Senator representing Kaduna North from 2007-2015, and of course the immediate past National Caretaker Committee Chairman of Major opposition PDP.

Sen. Ahmed Makarfi had earned himself a reputation for peace and of course he’s Kaduna state’s “Apostle for Peace” following his achievements in maintaining calmness and his fearless and rational way of maintaining security, law and order across the state. SAM was able to contain religious disputes during his administration as governor –Although he faced an impossible challenge, to be sided enough to satisfy his fellow Majority and most rational enough to reassure the minors. SAM believed he never ran to be governor for the Hausa majority, he ran to be the governor of the entire Kaduna state and he happens to be Hausa/Islam majority. I believe he needed to become a force for healing in the state after religious clashes that claimed many lives and properties, and finding the right way to do that was something HE ACHIEVED!

Since the 2000 riots, SAM initiated reforms to reduce ethnic and religious tensions, including introduction of a modified version of sharia, to try and accommodate feelings of both religious communities. Under the system which became operational on 2nd November 2001, the Muslim legal code will only apply in predominantly Muslim areas while canon or customary law will rule in areas inhabited by Christians and non-Muslims.(IRIN 22 November 2001, ‘Nigeria: Focus on tension between communities in Kaduna state’)

While addressing the Nigerian supreme council for Islamic affairs (NSCIA) in Kaduna, September 17, 2001. MAKARFI DECLARED: “None of us has the right to take another person’s life no matter the motivation, when one decides to take innocent lives in that way and manner, it should be known that it was not a war. Even in war, life is sacred, especially where you have innocent people.”

To further deliver the message for peace, even across the borders of Kaduna state, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi embarked on a mission –following the effects of crises that affected businesses and diplomatic relations with other states. He toured across the nation preaching the need for unity, peaceful coexistence and further apologized on behalf of the state. For the first time in Nigeria, had any governor made a giant step as such! –in fact, On his arrival to the palace of the Tor Tiv Dr. Alfred Akawe Torkula in Gboko, Benue state, the King praised Makarfi’s doggedness by saying “Governor Makarfi has made history, and that history will be followed until we realize our dream of a great Nigeria”.(EG, The Makarfi Legacy, 2004)

In conclusion, there is no dispute that SAM had proved himself over and over again to be one of the few men in our country endowed with great ideas to be able to turn things around for good. Truth be told, our nation had been through major conflicts, uprising, attacks and reprisals, insecurity leading to a day by day raising death tolls in thousands and getting to hundreds of thousands with displaced persons in hundreds of thousands, maybe millions. Here is a leader who has restored a People’s Democratic Party from the worst crises since founded in 1998 and saw through a well-organized elective convention… We therefore believe -there is no better person with more leadership experience, integrity and acceptability that is capable of restoring peace, justice, transparency, equality, tolerance and democracy in Nigeria today other than Senator. Ahmed Muhammed Makarfi.

Contrary to the fact that observers and commentators of the Nigerian Political environment do have opinions that differs.. one can hardly deny the fact the Senator Ahmed Makarfi who was a two term Governor, two term Senator of the federal republic and immediate past chairman of the People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria is a Simple down to earth politician, a bridge builder, Philanthropist, a detribalised Nigerian, Man of peace, a unifying figure and an extremely honourable personality who is viewed as a political gladiator not only in Kaduna state, but the entire nation and beyond.

At a time like this when Nigerians are so desperate and eager to Change the change and to kick out a government that had brought lies, hardship, hunger, insecurity and injustice to the nation. Senator Makarfi is however considered as one of the few credible and trusted leaders with the capabilities of turning things around if given the opportunity to take charge of the affairs of a dying Nigeria. There is no dispute that his achievements in Kaduna state and performance with the PDP as chairman all speaks greatly of him.

In trying to assess the Makarfi candidacy, one must first compare and contrast the oppositon PDP alongside other Presidential hopefuls with regards to the 2019 electioneering. Although so many points Makarfi to be the right candidate, following the zoning arrangements to the North by the party.. there seems to be Indications that interested candidates such as Sule Lamido, Atiku Abubakar, Ibrahim Shekarau amongst others will definitely not give up the party’s flag on easy grounds and will therefore compete fearlessly to get at their ambitions.

In as much as the People’s Democratic Party is working hard to reclaim power and save the nation, Party will choose to go for a candidate who is sellable, very well accepted by the electorates and can match President Buhari’s popularity in the North. But for a man who is excellent in Political diplomacy and saviour that brought back a dying PDP to life… Will a Makarfi candidacy be sufficient and all that is needed to dislodge the rulling APC in 2019?

Hate him or Love him, to be rational or otherwise, Sen.Makarfi remains a candidate with clean records and had so far so great delivered essential governance wherever he found himself to serve. He’s been a loyal party faithful in good and in bad times, under the sunshine and the heavy rain, he had made sacrifices and contributed his all towards the growth and progress of his party the PDP. However, as time approaches, we all expect to see a change of game play and the delegates will have to decide democratically without any interfering factors on who is best to fly the party’s flag during the primary elections prior to the 2019 general elections.
