Let me ask, what is the average (highest) mileage a car (both foreign and NAIJA used) should be have when purchasing for use in Nigeria?

This depend on the country of origin for USA an average of 13000 miles per year is expected, 7000 miles for UK and 15000 miles for Canada.

So when you know your can origin, you can mutiply expected average by the numbers of years that will give you an idea of the usage.

Though car mileage play a good role in helping to place value on a car but does not guaranty that the car is in absolute good condition or bad condition, there are other factors that determine if a car is in good or bad shape, especially maintenance history

As for the Naija used car, that is the reason for this thread

Majority of us do short distances daily and barely covering 50km daily. If we want to travel a distance of 500 to 1000km we rather use commercial buses bc our roads are bad and is no fun driving very long distances

Means the vehicle has been painted outside the factory paint. You sometimes wonder the rationale behind that when 90 percent of Toks vehicles have been repainted.

As for the topic, I do an average of 15k miles yearly. The average Nigerian should do between 10-15k miles in a year.

This is really getting interesting, I actually thought Nigerians spend more hours in driving due to traffic not actually driving long distance per day but this seems to be untrue

This is the part I'll never understand.

My 7 year vehicle (moderate mileage, <65,000 km) has dents, scratches, and some "tribal marks" from commercial buses (Danfo ) etc. I drive in Lagos after all and these scars are more or less rites of passage for most cars. But the mechanicals are sound. I can vouch for the powertrain, suspension, cooling system and electricals of my vehicle anyday, anytime. Yet I have been told that buyers will seriously mark down the value of the car (if I decide to sell) because of 'body' wear and tear.

I remember a Mercedes Benz ML 350 I saw at my local mechanic's place some years ago. Spotless black metallic paint and a blemish free, tan leather interior. This car really looked like it had just rolled out of the factory - until the mechanic opened the bonnet for an oil change. Apparently, the owner wasn't big on maintenance and had been skipping routine servicing. When the mechanic brought out the oil filter, it was an unrecognizable mess - completely deformed and coated in thick black sludge . Of course, the engine was heavily sludged up and the mechanics were worried about what to do next. Carry out an engine flush and risk major mechanical damage? They eventually settled on a black oil flush - but not before warning the owner of what could potentially go wrong.

I asked about the car recently and the mechanic told me the owner had sold it. I honestly pity the buyer if he/she wasn't given full information and he/she made the purchase only because the body was 'good'. With what I saw, there's no way that car won't give serious problems down the line.

Summary: the body is important but the record of use and maintenance of the other parts (powertrain etc.) is even more important. Of what use is a good body when a car keeps breaking down?

I had same issue why try to sell my car late 2018, reason i didn't repaint is because i spent considerable amount of money to ensure the car engine and suspensions are in good condition. I don't want to get disappointed while on Lagos-Ibadan expressway or Madam having issue on her way to work.

When i put the car up for sale people where pricing at rediculous amount when i understand the perfect state of the car engine, even though the body is rough.

Around Xmas period last year i decided to paint the car which cost me about 70k and after which i uploaded the pictures, Waow, the car pricing value went up with 450k.

OP. in my own case, taking my current car for instance, i bought it at 189000 KM... It's about a year and 6 months now, after everyday driving round the city to and from work, visiting some places and occasional travelling.. It is now 213500

That makes it about 24500KM that i have added

That is around 16,000KM for me a year.

An average Nigerian vehicle should be around 15000 to 30000KM a year.

This ia an average of 9k miles to 18k miles per year, this is too much for a Nigeria regular office worker except you run a transport company

Just wondering if there is an assumed average mileage expectation in Nigeria just like most foreign countries. If you are to buy a car for instance in the USA, an average of 13000 miles per year is expected, 7000 miles for UK and 15000 miles for Canada. With this it help to determine the level of usage and help place appropriate value on the vehicle or better still help the buyer to negotiate better.

Was recently shoping for a used Nigeria car that is bought brand new. Saw a 2014 Accent with 156000km (appr 96000 Miles). The seller was like na my Oga get am, him get three cars so he hardly use it. 96k miles in four years, bros you Oga na Uber driver or Ekene Dili Chukwu, so he no use am and you have 96k miles.

I bought a foreign used car with 178k miles early 2014 and as at January 2019 before selling i had 216k miles with usage within Lagos and countable times to Ibadan. I know most Nigeria are interested in how clean the body of the car is and pay little or no attention to usage and maintenance

So Gurus in the house, what is the expected average mileage per year of a car used in Nigeria do you consider okay?

In the aftermath of the issuing of permits to Meter Asset Providers (MAP) that will supply meters to customers of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company Plc by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the power distribution company has appointed three brands to handle the supply of meters.

Recall that Ikeja Electric has a total of 1,074,411 to be distributed to customers within its network in this phase of the exercise.

As a result, Ikeja Electric has appointed Mojec international Limited to supply 399,790 meters; Consolidated Infrastructure Group to supply 397,922 meters and New Harmshire Capital Ltd to supply 276,699 meters within its franchise under MAP exercise.

According to NERC, the permit in accordance with section 4(3) of the MAP Regulations 2018 was issued to MAPs that were successful in the procurement process conducted by Ikeja Electric.

Section 4(3) of the MAP regulation 2018 requires all electricity distribution licensees to engage MAPs that would assist as investors in closing the metering gap and thus eliminating the practice of estimated billing in the Nigerian electric supply industry

NERC said the rollout of meters would commence no later than the May 1, 2019 and customers should expect from the commencement of rollout date, meters to be installed in their premises within 10 working days of making payments to MAPs in accordance with section 18(3) of MAP Regulations 2018.

It also stated that MAPs shall charge an upfront amount of N36,991.50 and N67,055.85 for single and three phase meters respectively. These costs are inclusive of supply installation, maintenance and replacement of meters over its technical life.

In addition, the commission shall monitor closely rollout of distribution licensees and overall compliance with the regulation and various services agreements by the MAP and electricity licensees.
