By causing the postponement of the general elections, the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, and the military chiefs have plotted a coup against the Nigerian constitution, radical lawyer, Femi Falana, has said. Mr. Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, stated this in his response to the postponement of the general elections as announced by the electoral agency, INEC, through its chairman, Attahiru Jega. Mr. Jega on Saturday night said the elections, initially scheduled for February 14 and 28 will now hold on March 28 and April 11. He explained that the postponement was necessitated by the statements of the NSA and military chiefs that they could not provide security in February as the military would be busy with tackling the Boko Haram insurgency. Mr. Falana, citing constitutional provisions, however, argued that both the military chiefs acted wrongly by making such assertions. “In a desperate bid to blackmail the INEC to postpone the election the NSA wrote a letter to the INEC to the effect that the armed forces could not provide security for the election because of the operations in the north east region. “By writing directly to the INEC on the security situation in the north east region the NSA usurped the functions of the National Security Council.” Mr. Falana added that “by causing the election to be postponed, the NSA and the security chiefs have staged a coup against the Constitution. They are liable to be prosecuted for the grave offence of treason at the appropriate time.” Read his full statement below: At a public lecture delivered at the Chartham House in London last month, the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki disclosed that he had “advised” the Independent National Electoral Commission to postpone the election. The reason adduced then for the unsolicited advice was that the INEC needed time to distribute permanent voters’ cards to all registered voters. As an adviser to the President on national security the NSA has no powers whatsoever to give directives or advice to the INEC. Indeed, there is no statutory nexus between the INEC and the NSA to warrant the purported demand for the postponement of the General Election. To that extent, the NSA acted illegally. The INEC rightly rejected the unwarranted interference from the NSA. But as soon as the INEC announced that all arrangements had been put in place for the distribution of the remaining permanent voters cards in readiness for the February 14 election the NSA began to sing a different tune. At that juncture, President Goodluck Jonathan convened a meeting of the Council of State. The NSA and the security chiefs were curiously invited to the meeting with a view to convincing the Council members to endorse the postponement of the election. To their utter dismay, they failed to achieve the illegal objective as the Council declined to support the postponement of the election. The Presidency had wanted the advisory body to usurp the constitutional duty of INEC by taking a “decision” on the postponement of the election. In a desperate bid to blackmail the INEC to postpone the election the NSA wrote a letter to the INEC to the effect that the armed forces could not provide security for the election because of the operations in the north east region. By writing directly to the INEC on the security situation in the north east region the NSA usurped the functions of the National Security Council. That is the only body that has the constitutional duty to “advise the President on matters relating to public security including matters relating to any organization or agency established by law for ensuring the security of the Federation.” The Council which is established under section 153 of the Constitution is comprised of the President, Vice- President, the a Defence Minister, Chief of defence staff, minister of interior, minister of foreign affairs, inspector-General of police and national security adviser. It is pertinent to point out that the security chiefs are not members of the National Security Council. Neither are they members of the Nigeria Police Council. Therefore, they lack the constitutional power to make any authoritative pronouncement on the security of the nation. Even though the NSA is a member of the National Security Council he cannot usurp the constitutional responsibilities of the body with the connivance of the service chiefs. Since the NSA and the service chiefs acted illegally and mala fide the INEC ought to have rejected their politically motivated request for the postponement of the Election. The reliance on section 25 of the Electoral Act by Professor Attahiru Jega, the INEC chairman is totally misleading. The provision does not support the postponement of a general election in the entire country but “in the area or areas” where there is violence or actual threat of a breakdown of law and order. Since the reason for the postponement of any election must be “cogent and verifiable” it is crystal clear from the press conference addressed by Professor Jega last night that the INEC did not verify the bogus claim of the NSA and the security chiefs as required by the law. By saying that they would not provide security in aid of civil authorities pursuant to section 217 of the Constitution the security chiefs have committed the offence of mutiny contrary to section 52 of the armed Forces Act. Contrary to the mistaken belief of the INEC leadership the armed forces have no role to play in the electoral process. Since it is the exclusive constitutional responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force to maintain law and order during elections the INEC should have called off the bluff of the security chiefs. More so, that the Inspector- General of Police had confirmed the readiness of the Police to provide security for the election. Just last week, the federal high court sitting in Sokoto declared illegal and unconstitutional the involvement of soldiers in election duties. That judgment is binding on all authorities and persons in Nigeria. It is pertinent to point out that the postponement of a General Election throughout the country is provided for under section 135(3) of the Constitution where it is stated that “If the Federation is at war in which the territory of Nigeria is physically involved and the President considers that it is not practicable to hold elections, the National Assembly may by resolution extend the period of four years mentioned in subsection (2) of this section from time to time, but no such extension shall exceed a period of six months at any one time.” Since the President could not persuade the National Assembly to pass a resolution for tenure elongation on spurious grounds the service chiefs allowed themselves to be manipulated to subvert the democratic process. Thus, by causing the election to be postponed, the NSA and the security chiefs have staged a coup against the Constitution. They are liable to be prosecuted for the grave offence of treason at the appropriate time. If the satanic Boko Haram sect is not defeated by the armed forces of the republics of Chad, Cameroon and Niger in the next six weeks, the security chiefs are likely to ask for another postponement of the General Election on the ground that the operations in the north east region have not been successfully concluded. As such extension cannot be accommodated under the Electoral Act and the Constitution, the democratic process may be terminated by the security chiefs to pave way for the much touted INTERIM NATIONAL GOVERNMENT. Since some of the Colonels who played a dominant role in the criminal annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election have taken over the security of the country, the democratic forces in Nigeria should be prepared for a long drawn out battle for the restoration of civil rule. In the circumstance, I am compelled to urge Nigerians to beware of the “Ides of March”. The fear of candidate Buhari is now the beginning of wisdom in Nigeria today. Buhari was no serious contender in the eyes of ordinary Nigerians in the contest for the Presidency in 2003, 2007, 2011 but in 2015 Buhari has become a serious issue, a volcano, an avatar, a hurricane, a force and a thunder to reckon with. The event that changed everything was when General Buhari was nominated as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in a 48-hour non-stop event at Teslim Balogun stadium in Surulere. Few days after a cerebral scholar and Pastor in the finest tradition Professor Yemi Osinbajo was picked as his running mate, the momentum changed, permutations changed and calculations changed. The very stone which the builder rejected has become the head of the corner and all and sundry have come far and near to admire the edifice. But Buhari's rise to fame in Nigeria did not come so easy. Like Abraham Lincoln who through power of consistent consistency rose to become the president of the United States after several attempts, Buhari waded through pains and tears to get to where he is today. I have since learnt a lot through Buhari's power of not losing his head when others are losing theirs in a country where politics of the stomach holds sway. Through Buhari's life I have learnt that there is hope for a man who is not easily defeated even when the person seems to have lost everything. I have learnt that the world and everything that is in it belongs to those who try to drill the deepest well. This is the reason why the thieves, the corrupt, the demons, jezebels and all the monsters in Nigeria will not sleep until Buhari is out of the way for them to continue the business as usual. Check the newspapers, the TV stations, radio stations etc and you will at once notice that the common project is to find everything that is bad under the sun and hang it on the neck of the retired general. They all have a thousand and one reasons to demonize and pull down candidate Buhari so that the business will continue as usual. They place adverts and documentaries that make no meaning to anybody except those placing them. When there are no lies to use against Buhari, they try to manufacture as many as possible and dish it out to to the political space. The more they do this the more it becomes obvious that Nigeria needs a Buhari to rise again. The more those who seek to destroy Buhari work, the more his popularity grows a million times. The more they throw mud at him the more cleaner the man becomes in the eyes of the ordinary Nigerians who desire change at all cost. If you have listened to the audio and the transcript of how Ayo Fayose, Obanikoro, Omisore, Olubolade, Chris Ubah, Nigerian army, the police, DSS, the presidency etc conspired to steal Ekiti state from APC, you will then realize why Ayo Fayose wants Buhari dead by all means. If you know how much crude oil is stolen in Nigeria on a daily basis or how some importers of petroleum products have shortchanged the country, you will then realize why they are fighting tooth and nail to maintain the status quo. If you know the privileges Asari Dokubo, Edwin Clark, Tompolo and others enjoy today under president Jonathan you will at once understand why they are threatening fire and brimstone should Jonathan lose this election. If you are privileged to know the billions going to the pastors and the so called Men of God, you may not go too far to understand why they are falling over themselves to accuse Buhari of planning to Islamize Nigeria if elected president. If your eyes are wider enough to see the rot some government officials especially at the federal level have brought to the land, you will at once understand why they want the soft and weak Jonathan to continue in office. If you are clever enough to know the billions of dollars Jonathan's administration has invested in the power sector without anything to show for it in sixteen years ,you will then realize why the fear of candidate Buhari is now the beginning of wisdom in Nigeria. If you know the level of corruption being condoned by this administration in Abuja, you will further understand why they want president Jonathan to continue forever. But the thieves have stolen enough for the owners to take notice. They have taken enough for themselves, for their children, their grand children and great grand children and yet they cannot say enough is enough. Candidate Buhari is coming to put a stop to this endless corruption and impunity. Buhari is coming to build the battered and badly managed Nigerian Army which was once one of the best standing Armies in Africa. Buhari is coming to unite Nigerians, president Jonathan has divided along ethnic and religious lines. Candidate Buhari is coming to restore sanity in the land. He is coming to stop the oil thieves and the political traders in the seat of power. The retired general is coming to restore the dignity of Nigeria and Nigerians in the comity of nations. He is coming to rebuild our decayed infrastructure and democratic institutions. He is coming to restore hope to the hopeless. He is coming to secure the land. Today, the money changers, the money doublers, the wheel dealers, marabouts, sorcerers, foolish constituencies, foolish gerontocrats, merciless and unconscionable oil dealers ritualists, who thrives under President Jonathan have become desperate, hysterical, confused, dumbfounded, and in total disarray about the coming of candidate Buhari. They are looking for time to regroup but cannot find the time. They want their Jonathan to be re-elected and yet they do not want an election. They have placed confused Advertorials to fight Buhari but they end up fighting themselves. They created a thousand lies to cover a lie and yet the truth stands out like the rock of Gibraltar. There is a finger of God in this fourth coming of candidate Buhari in 2015. Students of the Bible know that Cyrus in Isaiah 45 did not know God and yet God blessed him and used him. God is not man. God's ways are not man's ways. He sees beyond all of us in the world put together. I want Buhari to win this election so that these scavengers, contractors, ritualists, kidnappers, armed robbers, and oil dealers who call themselves Bishops, Pastors, Men of Gof will return to the scriptures. You cannot serve God and mammon. When the ordinary Nigerians call Buhari Mai Gaskiya, do we understand the meaning? A good man can be found in the church, in the mosque and in other religions. One honest man is worth more to the society than all ruffians that ever existed. Buhari is the next President of Nigeria. Case rested! The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has advised. eligible Nigerians, who enrolled for the national identity number, to collect their Identity Cards (ID) at stipulated centres. Abdul-Hamid Umar, the General Manager, Corporate Communications of the commission, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday. According to him, the commission has notified people who enrolled and whose cards were ready by sending text messages. “Many Nigerians have been enrolled in the national identity data base, though we are far behind the expectation. “Nigerians, who have received text messages personalised to them, giving information that their ID cards are ready, should come to our centres for collection,’’ he said. He said that the appropriate centres for the collection of cards had been stipulated in such messages. Mr. Umar said that there were some Nigerians who had not come for enrolment in the national identity data-base. He said the commission was committed to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian was enrolled and issued ID card for identification. In a separate interview,Titilola Ejiofor, an Assistant General Manager and Lagos State Coordinator of the commission, said that the commission had 21 enrolment centres in the state. According to her, the centres are Lagos State Head office in Ikeja, Lagos State University, Ikeja Army Cantonment, Eti-Osa, Ojo, Somolu, Oshodi, Amunwo-Odofin, Ayobo-Ipaja and Agege Local Government Secretariat. Others are FIRS Ikoyi, Lekki Phase I, Bonny Camp, Nigeria Air-force Base, Ikeja, Lagos State Polytechnic, Yaba College of Technology and University of Lagos. Ojo Army Cantonment, NMC Qourra Apapa and Ijele Campus, Lagos Island are also parts of the centres, according to her. Mrs. Ejiofor, who expressed satisfaction over the turnout of Lagos residents for the exercise, added that a lot of eligible residents had been captured. “A lot of people have registered in Lagos and in the country as a whole. So many people in Lagos have registered. “People have been very positive, they come out each day to be enrolled and we have been given ID cards to them. “We are opening more centres in the state, we are not just going to stop at the current available centres,’’ she said. According to her, a Nigerian of 16 years old and above can visit any centre with valid means of identification such as Driver’s Licence, International Passport and Voter’s Card. She said documents such as educational certificate, photo identity from recognised educational institutions, pension’s photo ID and photo credit cards, among others, could also be used for enrolment. Mrs. Ejiofor, therefore, advised Nigerians to come out in the New Year for enrolment, saying that the registration would be a continuous exercise. I have followed Femi Fani-Kayode from my university days and that gives me time to evaluate him. Those who have also followed FFK the way I have apparently will tell you he has disappointed both heaven and hell. He is a man who integrity means nothing and who spits and licks the saliva back with his tongue. His voice attains lucidity in his quest for political entrepreneurship. Indeed, the likes of FFK do not have anything to offer but follow the money politicians. It is embarrassing that, having written and insulted PDP and Jonathan, FFK now sings for the man he had demeaned and debased. What a shame. I am particularly worried. Judging from what FFK had written about PDP and Jonathan, he has the temerity to pick up the job of PDP campaign director. Permit me to do a cursory review of what FFK had written about the party and personality he currently serve. Now that he has joined the PDP, suddenly they are now innocent while APC has become the Nigerian cataclysm. In The Nation Newspaper http://thenationonlineng.net/new/ jonathans-govt-is-a-dismal-failure-says-fani-kayode/ Fani- Kayode was quoted to have said in an interview, “Jonathan’s government is a dismal failure.” Therein, he elaborated, on how PDP had lost touch with reality. To him, Czar Nicholas of Russia, a night before the Russian Revolution, clapped for himself. Hitler, a night before the Russians knocked on the bunker and he had to kill himself, also clapped for himself. Don’t expect PDP which has lost touch with reality and has become delusioned to score itself in an equitable and fair way. He challenged PDP and Jonathan to tell Nigerians what it has done to improve the state since May 29, 2007. He claimed that every single sector has degenerated and the facts and figures are there. We now have 80 per cent graduate unemployment; 70 per cent of Nigerians living below the poverty line. In power generation, we were hitting 4,500 megawatts (MW) per day in 2007. Today, we are lower than that. “In terms of foreign reserves, in 2007, we had $47 billion. Today, I think we have $45 billion. It has not progressed, despite all the crude oil sales. The Excess Crude Account, in 2007, was $24 billion; today, we have $7 billion. If we talk of foreign debts, a very important thing, in 2007, we had zero per cent foreign debts; today, we are back to $9 billion and still borrowing. So, what are they celebrating? Whether you like (former President Olusegun) Obasanjo or not, if you look at his performance, it was excellent. The record speaks for itself. What did they do with it? Did they build on it? No! Everything has degenerated since then. I cannot be impressed with that and so we need a change. Let’s have new people in government. In another account the News Rescue http:// newsrescue.com/video-femi-fani-kayode-blasts-president- jonathan-govt-defends-buhari-stance-rigging/ #axzz3Ne6mv9IH FFK strongly defended opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari’s and said the Goodluck Jonathan government was the worst in Nigeria’s history. When asked at about General Buhari’s statement that if 2015 is rigged there will be consequences, Femi Fani- Kayode categorically defended and approved it as a “very good statement.” He explained, if anyone was planning to rig, they better be ready for consequences. He gave the example of the Governors Forum election where the Jonathan candidate, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau got 15 votes but claimed he was the winner over Governor Rotimi Amaechi. He said as a historian such violations had never occurred in Nigeria. In an apparent stunning approach Femi Fani-Kayode published an article on Sahara Reporters titled Jonathan, Tukur and a Government of Jezebels http:// saharareporters.com/2014/01/20/jonathan-tukur-and- government-jezebels-femi-fani-kayode. In the article he commended Jonathan for removing Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as National Chairman of the PDP, he wished him goodluck and prayed he stays alive to see PDP defeated and an APC President sworn in in 2015. He acknowledged Boko Haram is winning the war and government not doing enough, as a result he commends the President for removing and reshuffling a large number of his key commanders in the military. He further elaborated on the PDP, claiming that it will continue to sink because it is a political party that has lost its bearing and its soul and it has mortgaged its conscience. To him, frankly speaking, the PDP has become a party that is beyond redemption and the removal of Tukur would no change that. Listen to FFK: ” I say this because no sensible person will go back to a stinking carcass simply because the head of the dead animal has been cut off and thrown away. A carcass remains a carcass whether you cut off its head, legs or any other part of its body or not.” He described PDP as a party that has been rejected by God and whose leaders are suffering God’s judgment for their unjust, gluttonous, wicked, foul and evil ways. He described President Jonathan as a weak and uninspiring Commander-in-Chief. He suggested twelve things Jonathan must do if Nigeria must be saved. Which some of them are, he has to resign as President forthwith and undertake to stay out of Nigerian politics for the next ten years and confine himself to fishing in Otuoke. He must take off the kid gloves, stop interfering and give the military the green light to use all necessary means to prosecute the war against Boko Haram and he must win that war. He must dismantle the death squads and the group of deadly snippers that he has allegedly commissioned to create havoc and he must tear up the list of one thousand opposition figures that he has been accused of drawing up for elimination by Obasanjo and others. He must undertake to stop serving kain-kain at the Presidential Villa and he must dispense with the services of one Mama Brandy, a well-known Ijaw ”prayer warrior” and spiritualist. He further described Jonathan as a President who does not understand the meaning of the word ”class” or ”honesty” and who breaks his own word consistently. Who has abdicated his responsibilities, destroyed his own political party, divided his own country, alienated his own friends, humiliated his own mentor, abandoned his own people, brought ridicule to his own faith, cowers before his own officials, betrays his own governors, scorns the international community and breaks his solemn oath to protect and defend the Nigerian people. A President who does not have the nerve or guts to call to order any of the numerous Jezebels that control him. He is the problem we have in our country today and until he resigns, impeached or is voted out of power nothing will change and Nigeria will continue to go from bad to worse. May God deliver our country. These are the words of FFK. In a similar vein, Premium Times reported Fani kayode to have said, President Jonathan is leading Nigeria to destruction- http://www.premiumtimesng.com/ news/153227-jonathan-leading-nigeria-destruction-fani- kayode.html To him, with police openly attacking citizens, it was clear the Jonathan administration has lost its “mind and bearing. The president is leading Nigeria on the road to hell and on the path to Kigali. This was the reaction of FFK when the police tear gassed and disrupted Save Rivers Movement rally in Port Harcourt. Let those that believe that they can silence the voices of the opposition with threats of violence and death be rest assured of one thing- we cannot be intimidated and neither can we be silenced. These were the words of FFK when he was struggling to join the guys that loot state resources. It is important to note, I did not write article on FFK, what I just did was to review some of the things he had said about PDP and Jonathan which he at the moment it’s Campaign Director. What troubles the mind is, how did FFK suddenly forget the evil of PDP and now turned against APC the party he had defended and projected as the best thing that could happen to Nigerian state. It is not president Jonathan that is the problem no, but the likes of FFK who have refused to stand on the truth and manipulate the process. Certainly FFK will have two responses for me (1) APC has paid me for writing this piece or (2) I am one of the frustrated Nigerians out there seeking for attention. Borrowing from the word of FFK, frankly should Femi Fani Kayode has shame, he should not have anything to do with PDP. Mr. Oseni, a civil society advocate sent in this piece from Abuja. http://blogs.premiumtimesng.com/?p=166476 |

The Nigerian Navy on Friday took delivery of a new warship, NNS OKPABANA, donated by the United States government as part of efforts to tackle security challenges in Nigeria’s waters and the gulf of guinea. Ownership of the ship was transferred to Nigeria from the U.S. Coastguard in May 2014. It was the second ship provided by the U.S. government, following the first, NNS Aradu. Although the ship was a donation, the Nigerian Navy spent about $8.5 million refurbishing the vessel and emplacing its armaments, the News Agency of Nigeria reported Friday. Receiving the vessel in Lagos, the Chief of Naval Staff, Usman Jibrin, a Vice Admiral, said the addition of the vessel would boost the navy’s war against maritime crimes. “It is worthy of note to state that the successes recorded by NNS THUNDER in curtailing threats in our maritime domain and the larger Gulf of Guinea region, with the confidence reposed in our country by the USA, that made it possible to acquire NNS OKPABANA,” Mr. Jibrin said. “The addition of this ship into the NN fleet will certainly bolster our zeal to end the menace in our maritime domain and the region, as well as support the regional and global effort to eliminate transnational maritime threats. “This nation has always requested the navy to do more and with this, the government recognises that there must be needed platform for the navy to do its job well. “The present government headed by President Goodluck Jonathan took the recapitalisation of fleets as a huge challenge and has invested huge funds through the acquisition of two Off-Shore Patrol Vessels (OPV) from China and this one from USA. “It is hoped that by the time we take delivery of all, the NN will be better for it,’’ Mr. Jibrin said. The U.S-made vessel came at a time of strained relations between Nigeria and the United States, primarily over the fight against extremist group, Boko Haram. The Nigerian government accuses the United States of not fully supporting its military effort against the jihadist group, by refusing to sell Nigeria quality weapons needed for strategic operations. The American government accuses Nigeria of human rights abuses in the war against terrorism, and says its laws prohibit sales of weapons to nations with questionable human rights record. In 2014, the disagreement led to the cancellation of a training programme by American specialists for Nigerian troops. It is not clear how the transfer of the ship will help relations between the two nations with regards to Boko Haram, as the new vessel will focus on maritime security and would play little or no role in the terrorism war in Nigeria’s northeast region. The chief of naval staff said: “For us to be able to do effective maintenance, it is better to co-locate the two ships (OKPABANA and THUNDER) in the same command. “However, deployment should be based on threat perception. If they are closely related and are operating about the same area, our maintenance team can be co-located where they are and sourcing for spares will be easier. “We have opened a maintenance channel with the American government such that we can always source for spares. “Apart from that, our maintenance that has been working on-board THUNDER will be maintained for OKPABANA and we will continue to maintain the channel of spare sourcing to avoid what happened to ARADU,” Mr. Jibrin said. On the partnership between Nigerian and China on the upgrading of the Port Harcourt shipyard, the naval chief said the Chinese team was expected to be in Nigeria by the first quarter of this year. Mr. Jibrin said a second locally built ship has been launched, adding that the engineering team would proceed with the fittings and installations of all ancillaries. He said once that was done, the ship would be put to sea, adding: “NNS ARADU is not the first ship built for Nigeria. All our ships before now were built for NN and to our specification. “It is because we want to quickly meet with the yearnings of Nigerians that we went into acquisition of these ships. “A ship is not something you can buy off the shelf. It has gestation period from acquisition to take off. It took us four years for ARADU to be constructed, but these ones we are bringing from China took two years. “But for the fact that we decided that the second one will be completed at the Naval shipyard, the second one would have also been completed by June,” Mr. Jibrin said. In his remark, the U.S. Ambassador, James Entwinstle, said both countries were interested in a peaceful, well policed Gulf of Guinea, saying the U.S. support has significantly increased Nigeria’s ability to reach the shared goal. Mr. Entwinstle, who was represented by the US Consul General, Jeffery Hawkins, said most of Nigeria’s security problems come from the sea. “Many of the regions’ security challenges come from the sea, and this powerful new naval platform will enhance Nigeria’s ability to control the maritime environment. “OKPABANA is the first Nigerian vessel to have a Regional Maritime Awareness Capability (R-Mack) system on board. “This system will link back to the NN wider R-Mack network and expand NN’s ability to track and identify vessels throughout the Gulf of Guinea,” he said. Designed as a high endurance cutter, OKPABANA has a crossing range of 9,600 nautical miles, which is translated at 17,800km at 20 knots. The ship also has an 80 foot flight deck that is capable of handling helicopters which of course make her an ideallatform for extended patrol mission, as well as a crew capacity of 170 personnel. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/174155-nigerian-navy-takes-delivery-of-new-warship-donated-by-united-states.html

“If you think that you can be Africa’s Steve Jobs, then 2015 is the year for you to start the journey,” said Nigerian billionaire and revered business leader, Tony Elumelu in a video message announcing the official opening of his $100 million pan-African entrepreneurship initiative, the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program (TEEP). The highly anticipated program went live at the stroke of midnight West Africa Time (WAT) today. Following the billionaire investor’s announcement at the Tony Elumelu Foundation headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 1st of his pledge of $100 million towards creating 10,000 entrepreneurs across Africa over the next 10 years; the annual program, the first ambitious undertaking of its kind, was opened for business ideas submissions and entries from applicants across Africa via its online application portal, TEEP. The multi-year program provides training, seed capital and mentoring and is primarily designed to empower the next generation of African entrepreneurs because according to Mr. Elumelu, “the private sector in Africa and entrepreneurs in particular have an important role to play in the growth and transformation of the continent”. Additionally, the celebrated business leader said that through TEEP, there was a need “to relentlessly create and nurture African entrepreneurs” given the numerous challenges on the continent; “limited access to finance, electricity, and to the markets”. According to the press statement, the $100 million entrepreneurship program, endowed by the Tony Elumelu Foundation, an African-based, African-funded philanthropic organization, will identify and support 1,000 entrepreneurs from across the continent each year over the next decade. Overall, the 10,000 start-ups and young businesses selected from across Africa will ”enable Africa’s economies to compete globally in the 21st century,” said Mr. Elumelu, add $10 billion in annual revenues to Africa’s economy and ultimately create one million new jobs. Citizens and legal residents of all 54 African countries are eligible and encouraged to apply to the program. “Since the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program was announced, we have been enthused by the level of interest and excitement from entrepreneurs across Africa. We are looking forward to reviewing the entries and identifying the first cohort of the continent’s next generation of business leaders,” Parminder Vir OBE, Director of Entrepreneurship, The Tony Elumelu Foundation said in a press statement. Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG, a Yoruba socio-political body, has warned about the looming political instability likely to mar the process. At a public presentation of their annual report, ‘Nigeria Democratic Governance Report: Curbing Political Instability and Extravagance,’ the ARG said that major indicators ahead of 2015 now put Nigeria on “red alert.” “We are now faced with a depressing economic outlook because of dwindling revenues, corruption, and heavily flawed and extravagant budget,” said Olawale Oshun, ARG’s National Chairman. “Worse still, divisive politics is now so pervasive that the concept of a free and fair election in 2015 is looking more like a mirage, especially with the way INEC’s rating has plummeted in recent times. “How we navigate 2015 elections in the reality of this context will determine the country’s survival. “Nigerians should be concerned because the 2015 General Elections will not replenish the country’s depleted tank of political stability if certain reforms are not pursued as urgently as possible.” The ARG’s report, a review of the state of the nation between 2010 and 2014, showed that since 1999 when the country returned to democracy, political and economic stability have been on the decline. Mr. Oshun said that the country’s presidential politics had been taken over by nepotism and ethnocentrism. “For instance, it is difficult not to read meaning to the fact that under the current administration, all economic agencies like CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria), SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), DMO (Debt Management Office), AMCON ( Assets Management Company of Nigeria), NSE (Nigerian Stock Exchange), SWF (Sovereign Wealth Fund), and the Finance Ministry are headed by experts from the Igbo ethnic group,” Mr. Oshun said. In its recommendations, the ARG reiterated its call for a return to the First Republic’s regional structure or adoption of the six geo-political zones as federating units. “The uncontrollable wastage and rapacious corruption in Federal Government necessitates the reduction of Federal Government’s share in Revenue Allocation Formula to 35 percent, with maximum devolution of powers to the federating units,” the group stated. “We must warn here, for the umpteenth time, that granting autonomy to local government administrations is counter-productive in a federal state. Remove LGA from revenue sharing and let each federating unit manage as many LGA as it could. The ARG called for the abolishing of the Excess Crude Account and other “special” accounts as well as for budget implementation to be anchored on accountability and transparency. “There is no public-compliant mechanism to monitor execution of contracts, which has become a ‘legal’ avenue for corruption because the NASS, in addition to proving inept in its oversight function, is also a willing collaborator. “The pressure on Naira must be relieved as urgently as possible by reducing useless imports. Ensuring that refineries operate at a level that meets local needs is a critical project that must be pursued by an incoming administration.” The group also called for a review of the current import and waiver policies in the country which it described as the single biggest threat to local SMEs. “Once again, this report is the voice of reason, a cry from the wilderness. Will Nigeria listen and be saved? Political stability indicators are almost at zero levels and 2015 General Elections, especially the presidential election, is already laden with potential threats of violence that may be unprecedented in Nigeria’s history. “Our advice is for the presidency, NASS, and all political parties to meet and agree to an exit strategy that embodies peace and upholds democracy. “However, whether this advice is heeded or not, the ARG is conscious of the need to initiatives geared towards protecting the Yoruba people and their interest, as other nationality groups in the country are presently doing. Yoruba political and business leaders must now realise that they are more endangered than their counterparts in other nationalities, if the present trend continues.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/174111-2015-general-elections-looking-like-mirage-afenifere-group-warns.html |
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said he will continue to do his best in solving Nigeria’s challenges, but said he does not expect praise while still in office. Mr. Jonathan said he understands that his current actions and achievements will only be justified and applauded after he had left power. Mr. Jonathan stated this at the presidential villa when a delegation of traditional rulers and leaders from Bayelsa State visited him. The group, led by Governor Seriake Dickson, said its mission was to show solidarity with the president ahead of the 2015 election. Amongst the notable personalities on the team were the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, Alfred Diete-Spiff, Bayelsa State Chief Judge, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, and the former Managing Director of NDCC, Timi Alaiyibe. Mr. Jonathan said the constant criticism of his government do not come as a surprise to him. He said he is aware that if he performs poorly, the people of Bayelsa would be embarrassed, therefore he must work hard to perform well to build a better Nigeria for Nigerians. ”The new year is full of challenges for Nigerians because of the early elections. Everywhere will be hot from January 2nd,” the president said. “I assure you that I am here by the grace of God with the willingness of Nigerians. If Nigerians say I shouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have been here. We contested election in 2011 and Nigerians voted for us. “I am your own, if I don’t do well, the shame will be on you. If I do well, you will have some kind of pride. I will do my best,” he said. The president expressed concern over how Nigerians criticise him and his government using the social media. “These days, there are all kinds of stories. It is all over the world, leaders are being lambasted, especially with the social media now. “People use what knowledge had created for negative reasons. Just as I was told that the person who invented dynamite regretted that invention because he thought he was coming up with something to solve human problem, but when he got to know about the level of destruction: human lives that are being blown up because of explosion, the man regretted that invention,” he said. “What is supposed to be used for the common good was turned to negative purposes. “I always say that I will not even expect praises now because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know. “When you leave, people will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done, then they will compare you with whoever takes over. “Probably that is the time some people will begin to say good about you. But I will do my best to make sure that we do change things. “We are trying to create enabling environment for our economy to thrive irrespective of the challenges we are having in the petroleum sector and the security challenges we have. “I will do my best so that by the time I will leave, you will be able to say that when our son was there, he served the country well so that one day, another son of Bayelsa may be given another opportunity to serve Nigerians,” he said. Speaking earlier, the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Dickson, said they were in the State House to felicitate and wish President Jonathan and his family a victorious new year. He said the president’s home state was peaceful and was in safe hands. He assured the president that the Bayelsa people support him. Mr. Dickson praised the president for his transformation agenda saying it was impacting positively on Nigerians. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/173996-nigerians-will-praise-me-after-i-leave-office-jonathan.html

Communities in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Sunday rejected a goat and 10 bags of rice presented to the elders and people of the area by the management of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company, NOAC, for Christmas celebration. The Christmas gift to the host communities in Nembe was reportedly turned down by the Chairman of the Nembe Oil and Gas Committee, Nengi James, on behalf of eight communities in the local government. The people of Nembe were reportedly irked because the oil company intended the gift to be shared by the people of the communities and fishing settlements. In a statement issued on Sunday and made available to journalists in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, Mr. James described the gift as “a corporate embarrassment to the traditional institution and the good people of Nembe Kingdom.” He said that Agip Oil’s gift of ten bags of rice and one goat to a community of about five hundred thousand people is a clear demonstration of the multinational company’s crass insensitivity to the community which is a major hub of Agip’s operations. Mr. James said that the people of Nembe are contented people who will never be cowed by any Greek gift that will cause disaffection among the people of the area. He said Nembe is in dire need of development and employment for the teeming unemployed youth and added that the community is also in need of environmental protection. Mr. James warned that if the concerns are not properly handled, they could affect the harmonious relationship and peaceful coexistence between the company and the community. When contacted, the Community Relations Manager of Agip, Onyeaghaa Dan, refused to speak. He also did not respond to text messages sent to his phone. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/south-south-regional/173905-nembe-communities-%e2%80%8ereject-agips-christmas-gift.html |
‘Pastors that are poor were not called by God’ – Uma UkpaiBy Lucia Edafioka on December 21, 2014 @ 6:20 am@todayngrTweetPin It The president and founder of Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Dr Uma Ukpai has said that poor men of God did not receive divine calling. Dr Ukpai made this statement to Daily Independent. He said it was untrue that people resorted to Church establishment out of joblessness. According to Ukpai, “Jesus calls church business. He said, ‘I am about my father’s business’. He called church work business and what is business? Business is investment plus gain, minus loss. In church planting, no pastor can collect offering without giving account and survive. Every church has elders and the job of the elders is to make sure that account is given; it is not even publicly but given internally but the account must be given. “Church is all about investment and the gain they make is not in money but in people; that is the gain they make. People also can be called money because for instance, if a pastor’s ministry can cause 20 women to get pregnant; those women will not forget the pastor. If a pastor’s ministry can produce one of the richest 10 men in the country, those men will not forget the man who made them what they are. “When you are into ministry and you have what we call anointing, you have become profitable; you begin to touch lives; you begin to bless people; you begin to change the stories of families and your own story will change also because the man that waters others shall be watered by God. There is so much misinformation about the church. It is not all about money. If your pastor has anointing that can make the blind see, cripples walk, leprosy to disappear, that pastor is in money. “The only man you can worry about is a man who has no anointing; a man who God has rejected; a pastor who God has not approved what he is doing. God does not bless what he does not approve. If God approves what a pastor is doing, he will have more money than he can spend. I am an example.” On the forthcoming general elections vis-a-vis the challenges of Boko Haram insurgency, Ukpai said the crisis was part of Nigerian culture. “There is nothing new happening. We are used to fighting; we are used to killing and duping one another. People try to magnify little problems here and there as things that can overwhelm or swallow Nigeria. Let me tell you, we shall still be here after 2015. All these problems are old problems. Nobody has been able to manufacture new ones. “Even APC (All Progressives Congress) or PDP (Peoples Democratic Party), they have not been able to manufacture new problems. So, this country will still be here after 2015. All those stupid prophecies are from uninformed prophets, who have neither heard from nor seen God. Take it from me that this country will still be here and intact after 2015″. Commenting on attacks on Christians in some parts of the country, Ukpai said persecution had been part of the Christian calling. Quoting from the Holy Book, Ukpai pointed out that “The Bible promised us persecution; it did not say we shall not be persecuted. Secondly, persecution sharpens us and makes us pray better. I would rather have Christians persecuted than Christians not persecuted, because the more you persecute Christians, the more they will pray; the more they will seek after God. Those who seek after God shall know their God and those who know their God shall do exploit. So, in the attempt to harm us, they are sharpening us for a better and greater day.” Ukpai, however, appealed to politicians and other well-meaning Nigerians to work towards the peace, unity and prosperity of the country. His words: “We are praying for politics with principles; we are praying for politicians who have prepared themselves to serve and not to lord over us; and we are looking for politicians who are accountable to us and to themselves. But most importantly, we are asking for electorate who would not ask for bribes. Let nobody collect money to vote. If you collect money to vote, you have destroyed your moral right to account from the elected officers. “We want our politicians to know that we cannot continue to run in circle; let them show some level of maturity. Finally, every politician must respect the sacredness of human beings. Let nobody be killed because of another person’s ambition. When anybody is killed, he cannot be reproduced and because we didn’t create anybody, we don’t have the right to kill anybody. “So, can our politicians try to show good measure of maturity and intelligence, fear of God and preparedness to obey the laws of the land? “They behave as though there are no laws. There are laws and we must obey those laws; that is what will help us move forward and move in a manner that will bring reward to the whole nation.” source: http://www.today.ng/news/pastors-that-are-poor-were-not-called-by-god-uma-ukpai/
