Shey you dey see? Humans that are almost worse than some wild beasts. Some of them may even be less than 20 years with such stinking mentalities while the others are usually old bitter tribalists over 40/50 years of age. Lol, funny people.

I understand some people like you are really mentally sick and the only place they can display that ill health is on online forums like Nairaland where they can be cowards and psychos at the same time.

We will keep you in our prayers

Politics / Why Do Igbos And Yorubas Fight A Lot And Yet Marry Each Other Most by DonPagli: 2:48pm On Jun 10, 2022
Everytime online we see cursing, fighting, slander between these two tribes. Yet every Saturday there's always an Igbo/Yoruba wedding going on somewhere in Nigeria.

Olaniyi weds Chinyere
Okafor weds Oluwatosin

So what basically is the issue.

Is it a case of fight no reach bone or a case of two tribes being used by their political masters to wipe up sentiments for the benefit of only the political masters?

Eg Tinubu's people seem to be hell bent on introducing tribal differences/sentiments anytime elections are mentioned.

But in essence the two tribes act like they need each other more than the other tribes in the country.

Make we reason this thing well.

Investment / 6 Things That Make You Spend More Money [and How To Save More Instantly] by DonPagli: 5:35pm On May 08, 2022
Even if you don’t keep a budget you should still be able to reduce the things that waste your money, thus saving yourself anywhere from a few thousands to tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of Naira a month (depending on your disposable income).

So what are the immediate ways you can save more money right away than you thought possible?

1. Bank Fees/Charges
Do you do so many transactions in a month through your bank account online eg airtime/data topup, money transfers (via USSD or bank app), bill payments etc?

Does your bank charge you high monthly maintenance fees, SMS charges for even the most frivolous messages they send you, and any other hidden charges you can only see in your monthly account statements?

Well you will find that most people overlook the monies they lose to their bank in form of charges and fees.

If you want to know how much you are losing to bank fees/charges simply request for your statement of accounts. You can do these through your bank app yourself depending on your bank. You can log into your bank app, find the Account Statement or Inquiry tab and select the time range you want. 1, 3, 6 or 12 month account statements are fine.

2. Buying Items on Sales That You Don’t Really Need
How many times in the past couple of years have you bought an item simply because you see it’s on sale. You are saving some money by buying stuff on sale right?

Wrong. Sales promos are psychological triggers to get people to spend more. On stuff they don’t really need.

Let’s say you have enough hairs and wigs already. Then you are browsing on Instagram and come across one of the hair vendors you admire. Voila! you notice they are having a massive sale – 25% off or even 40% off!. You start to get enticed and debate within yourself whether to splurge N60,000 to buy the hair (which normally goes for N100,000). Remember you do not need a new hair plus you did not budget or plan to spend on hair that month.

However, because you saw what you believe is a deal, a massive sales discount, you are willing to take out money you planned to save. To buy the hair. That’s how sales discounts get us to spend more money than we should.

3. The Wrong Set of Friends
Peer pressure is real.

If you are have friends who spend unwisely and tend to buy things to impress strangers you may just find yourself spending more than you should.

If you have a group of friends or a friend that always call you to

show you yet another piece of costly shoes or clothes to buy
discuss going on another Friday night partying and spending spree etc
instead of discussions that will improve your networth, maybe it’s time you changed or expanded your friend circle.

4. Subscriptions You Don’t Use
Have you been in the situation where every month you get several debits and receipts from subscriptions to one service or the other? And you wonder, heck! when did I subscribe to this?

In today’s digital world subscriptions are fast becoming a normal part of our spending life. Netflix, Apple music, Spotify, phone services, gaming, dating apps, cloud storage, online book/library services, home security, magazines/newspapers etc are some of the common things people pay subscriptions on every month.

LAPO Microfinance Bank is one of the local banks very active in the personal and business loan market. They have made quite some name for themselves even in the midst of proliferation of online loan apps, with their mostly offline/physical presence heavy loan system.

In case you are looking for locations of LAPO Microfinance Bank in your area/location we have dug up an extensive list of their various branches and locations across Nigerian states.

We hope you find it useful.

However a word of caution if you are considering approaching them for a loan.

Be sure whatever you need the loan for will yield the gains to repay the loan. Or that at least you have a means of paying back. They can be pretty aggressive in their loan recovery processes.

Business / 17 Small Business Ideas For 2022 (ultimate List) by DonPagli: 10:06pm On Apr 02, 2022
We all know the rate of unemployment in Nigeria and how it has caused the educated youths to roam about with no job in hand. Gratefully, there are businesses you can partake in or undergo that would fetch you income which would in turn help give you a foothold in the society we live in today.

The challenge with most business ideas include;
- Not being viable
- Requiring too much capital
- Requiring more than 1 person to effectively start etc

We have tried to compile a list of business ideas that do not require much of the above

Below are the list of small business ideas suggested that you can engage in to earn income:

Raw Food Business
This is a profitable business that can bring good returns on investment in Nigeria. Nigerians are people who like to eat home cooked food more than fast food, unlike their foreign counterparts. Things like rice, beans, garri, among others, are what would be sold.

POS Agent Business
This is currently an in-vogue business where POS payment agents help people make withdrawals, transfers, pay for bills etc. There are lots of adults in Nigeria who are always in need of cash or need help with paying electricity bills, cable TV payments etc. You can sign up on any of the major fintech Payment operators like Opay or the banks, apply for a POS machine, and set up with a mini stall.

Laundry & Dry Cleaning Business
It is one of the relatively common businesses to start in Nigeria. A lot of people have done very well in this area and are still doing well. There are a lot of people who are too overwhelmed with work not to have time to wash their clothes. You only need to set up in a conspicuous neighbourhood with lots of busy working class persons.

Hamper/Gift Business
In Nigeria there are always lots of seasons and reasons to give gifts (birthdays, special holidays like Christmas, child dedication etc). If you know you have a knack for gifts (identifying cool gifts and packaging/wrapping them in the most attractive ways) you can monetise that gift. Take the burden of people who want to gift others something. You help them source and put together the gift package or hamper and even deliver for a fee. Use social media platforms like Instagram to promote your business. You will find that there are already several people doing this. It is one of the low startup cost businesses you can find.

Graphic Design Business
If you have the design skills, you can turn to the graphic design business. One of the benefits of this business is that you can learn the skills in involved in from scratch from a variety of free online resources and then expand on what you have learned. You can help people and businesses design an array of things from brochures to invitation/wedding cards, t-shirts etc.

Phone Repair Business
There are hardly any adults who do not have a phone in Nigeria. It just proves that the phone industry and the other businesses around it will only continue to grow. You can learn phone repair skills so that you can explore the huge market that exists.

A Delivery/Courier Business
With increasing exposure to online business and shopping there is always an opportunity to start a courier/delivery business that helps small business vendors deliver purchased goods quickly to their customers for a flat fee within the city/town. The obvious drawback to this might be the cost of acquiring a few bikes, hiring riders, implementing a tracking and payment collection system as well as dealing with local transport and government agencies.

Career / Job Search 101 - Getting A Good Job Fast by DonPagli: 11:06am On Feb 25, 2022
There are lots of advice out there on how to go about getting a good job.

This is not the usual advice. This is something more practical (and thus may require the reader to actually apply themselves to carrying out the steps).

Getting a job is all about

- making yourself valuable
- getting the target employers to know about your value and availability
- and then closing the opportunities that come your way

These are basically the crux of all job search advice.

So with no further ado, these are steps you can take to get the job you deserve, fast.

1. Everybody has a few strong points, qualities and abilities. Find what yours is. That way you can leverage it into an advantage. Do you know how to make people feel at ease? Know how to talk to strangers? Are you very good with analysing data? Are you very creative?

When you find your interest areas, strengths etc you can then improve and tailor to the kind of job that will make sense for you

2. Find What Interests You. To get a fulfilling job it has to be related to something you would enjoy doing. For some who love to relate with people, or handle people related issues, Human Resources might be a good outlet.

So find your interests and you’ll be closer to defining the kind of jobs you will perform well at.

3. Create a Compelling CV. The thing with CVs is that it basically represents you in front of the hiring employers/recruiters. You have to create the absolute best CV you can.

You can check out this guide on How to create CV for inexperienced graduates

If you don't have time you can actually use this simple CV Builder to create an attractive CV using one of the smart templates

4. Research the Industries You Want to Work in. To get a fulfilling job you have to be clear on which areas you want to work in as well as which types of companies you want to work for. Is it HR you are interested in? Or Sales? Product Management?

What kind of companies are you looking to work for? Make a list of (a) all the job types you’d like based on your interests, qualities as explained in the beginning of this post (b) Make a list of all the types of companies you’ll like to work for.

5. Now you have a Spreadsheet of the industries and companies you’d like to work for. You can start researching whether there are openings in these companies. You can look at previous job posts from these companies to see what they usually require for those types of jobs.

You need this information to then improve your chances of meeting the requirements.

6. Take Action to Improve on any of the Requirements You Don't Have. If you have an idea of what Company XYZ looks for in a HR Intern or Product Manager etc then it helps for you to acquire those requirements.

Ways you can improve on the requirements you don’t have include; taking courses, taking volunteer jobs to acquire real life skills, reading/learning what you can, trying out stuff especially for skills where you can learn and demonstrate by yourself.

Career / How To Know If Your CV Is Good Enough by DonPagli: 12:55pm On Feb 15, 2022
The litmus test of every CV or Resume is - whether it gets the owner job interviews.

When you apply for jobs your CV is your spokesperson. It does the job of selling your candidacy to the employer in your absence.

The purpose of your CV is to

- first get the attention of the employer/recruiter
- Sustain the interest and make them see you as a potential candidate for the job
- Convince them enough to invite you for an interview (either online, phone or face to face) where you can then continue the process of selling yourself

Some of the things that affect a CV and may make yours not good enough include;

- grammar, syntax errors
- poor design/layout
- poor writing
- inability to communicate your strengths well

If you have two minutes to spare you can use this tool to evaluate your CV and see areas you should improve on.

Career / 5 Irrelevant Or Harmful Information You Should Not Include In Your CV by DonPagli: 2:17pm On Feb 04, 2022
Despite the lots of career advice out there, many entry (and even experienced) career individuals still include irrelevant information in their CV.

Here's a quick run down of information you should not include in your CV, either because they are no longer relevant with the times or will never improve your chances or will even outright harm your job application.

1. Sensitive Personal Information: We see lots of CVs that have too much information and this is not for the good of the candidate. Don't include personal or sensitive information that can be used to commit fraud against you eg ID no, license details or any personal identification details outside your email and phone number

2. Information that May Be Used to Discriminate Against You: Again people still put stuff like Religion, etc in their CV. In the modern world reasonable employers (more especially reputable employers) don't care a hoot whether you are a Hinduist, Christian or Muslim. You should not be giving employers information that is no longer relevant.

3. Salary Information: Don't include any information on past or current salaries. There is no point until you get to the interview stage.

4. Empty Buzzwords: Some people think fluffy sentences and buzzwords may make them appear smarter. Nothing is further from the truth. Keep your words and sentences simple and effective.

5. Headshots or Photographs: Unless you are applying or doing a CV for jobs like modelling, acting etc where looks are part of the consideration there is no point including your photo in your CV.

Career / How To Search For Remote Jobs by DonPagli: 6:40pm On Jan 24, 2022
It appears remote job/work has come to stay. The Covid-19 pandemic certainly helped fast-track the adoption of remote work by companies around the world.

Now, with lots of young people interested in remote work, how does one search for and find remote job opportunities online?

We distill a few ways to find remote jobs in your area of interest, no matter your country.

1. Search - Google remains a very important job search tool for anyone who knows how to use it. You need to type in the right keywords to see results. Eg remote jobs in Nigeria, remote jobs in South Africa etc will return results of available remote jobs in that particular country.

2. LinkedIn - The world's largest professional network is a steady source of remote jobs. If you have an account, simply login, click on the jobs tab and select remote and then your country to see open remote jobs in your location.

3. Twitter - Using Twitter to find jobs may be a little trickier than the previous examples. You may need to search the right keywords and hashtags eg remote jobs remote work etc. Follow relevant handles that post those type of information, Grow your connection and Keep your Twitter profile professional. Lots of employers advertise remote/freelance jobs on Twitter and many times you simply need to send a DM to get more information

4. Facebook - One way to find relevant remote jobs on Facebook is to join the best and most relevant groups in your country/area. As a member you may find people posting one form of remote job or the other, mostly freelance. This way you come across and can apply to some interesting opportunities.

Career / 5 Outdated Things You Should Never Do On Your CV by DonPagli: 5:20pm On Jan 20, 2022
There are lots of career advice out there. Yet many people still make the mistake of putting either irrelevant or harmful information in their CVs.

If you want a more professional and respectable CV you should do away with these mistakes.

1. Putting Sensitive Personal Information: It's simple - leave out any sensitive personal information that someone can use to steal your identity or carry out fraud. Don't put your driver license details, or any ID card number for that matter (social security, passport, etc)

2. Including Information That Can Be Used to Discriminate Against You: See those people that still include stuff like religion, political affiliation, state of origin etc in their CV? It's no more relevant these days. In fact in lots of cases those information will leave you vulnerable to discrimination

3. Listing Previous or Current Salaries: those are discussions that will be had during the interview or later stages when you pass the interview.

4. Using Empty Buzzwords: People do this so they appear smart to recruiters. Those useless phrases and buzzwords instead do the opposite for you. Keep the words simple and meaningful.

5. Including Headshots or Photos: Unless you are applying for a role that requires looks (eg modelling, acting etc) you are better off leaving your photo out of your CV.

Career / Best Career Advice For The New Year by DonPagli: 5:47pm On Jan 19, 2022
We want to keep this simple and sweet.

Simple advice that will impact your life and career considerably this year. Some are so simple that you may be tempted to overlook them. Don't.

So now let's get to it.

(1) Plan your day the night before: Lots of people just go into each new day without a plan. So they basically just drift through the day and have no way of measuring what they achieved for the day. Having a to do list for each day (prepared before you go to bed the previous day) will have you working according to plan

(2) Set no more than 3 major goals for the year: If you set too many goals for the year you may end up not even achieving any. So drill down to the 3 most important goals for you. What are they? List them. And look at them every Monday to remind yourself and keep the vision burning

(3) Your goals should have deliverables or clear targets. Don't set something like - Improve my career this year. That's not a clear goal. Instead tie your goals to a specific outcome. Eg you could set a goal to - Start earning at least $5,000 monthly. Now this is a clear, measurable goal.

(4) Under each of your 3 goals, list in simple, short sentences the various tactics, actions you will take to achieve the goals.

(5) Review your year goals weekly. As with most things, goals are not cast in iron. Circumstances may change. Review your goals weekly. Only make changes when necessary. Your Actions for each goal especially may need adjustments or you may need to add new ones.

There, that's it. We promised we would keep it short, simple.

Share any ideas you think would be great for people looking to advance in their career this year
