Stop being emotional over nothing. We should move ahead, the Eagles gave their best (though not enough for their standard) and a quick question to you; can football (sport in general) be separated from education?

phatjoe50: FG should stop investing in football, they should invest
in education, fight insurgency and tackle corruption.

They cannot even grant simple interview to our media houses talkless of writing an editorial but belief so much on foreign media to laud their image, what a country.

Abducted pastor, Mr. Godson Akubiro, and six of his children

A 27-man gang on Friday abducted a pastor, Mr. Godson Akubiro, and six of his children from their Adeosun Street residence, Koya Estate, Igbo Olomu, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Akubiro is said to be the founder of Mountain of Breakthrough Church in the area. The incident was said to have occurred about 1.30am.

Neighbours, who requested anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that the gunmen arrived at Akubiro residence in three jeeps and a Toyota Tundra vehicle. The number plates of the vehicles were said to have been covered. The gunmen, who wore army camouflage, had allegedly gained entrance into the house with the aid of an iron cutter.

It was learnt that since the abduction, no one had heard from Akubiro and his six children.

The Community Developmen Association Chairman, Mr. Yinka Obasan, said he was alerted about the development about 2am.

“I got a call that night from a resident who was coming from a vigil. He told me that he noticed some military vehicles parked outside Akubiro’s home. He said the vehicles belonged to a high ranking military official because the insignia was covered.

“I told the man to wait for me and together we went to Akubiro’s home. When we got there, I greeted the men I met outside and introduced myself as the CDA chairman. I asked them if there was a problem. Instead of answering me, they turned on my companion and accused him of alerting me.

“After berating both of us for not minding our business, they forced us to sit on the ground and seized our phones. There was another resident sitting on the ground; they had detained him since 12am when they arrived. Then they started beating us.”

It was learnt that inside the Akubiro residence six of Akubiro’s children were in the sitting room watching a movie, when the men, said to be dressed in dark googles, black jeans and heavy bullet proof vests entered.

PUNCH Metro gathered that they told the terrified children that they were policemen and proceeded to drag their father, who was sleeping, from his bedroom into the sitting room. The six children, whose ages ranged between 30 and eight years, were beaten up.

One of them, an eight-year-old named Emeka, was allegedly tied to a tree in the compound. No reason was allegedly given by the gunmen for their actions.

Another 18-year-old boy named Obiora was said to have been tortured with a taser. Akubiro’s wife, Rita, was said to be away on a trip to South Africa at the time.

It was learnt that the gunmen later took Akubiro away along with Ada, his first daughter, Obiora, Oyinyenchi, Felicia,, Nonso and Kingsley. Three person were allegedly left behind – Emeka, Chidera and a baby.

Obasan said, “Around 2.45am, those who were inside came out with Akubiro and his children. They said they were going to the man’s church to burn it down – Akubiro is the founder and head of the Mountain of Breakthrough Church on Breakthrough Street in this estate.

“They put their victims in their vehicles and zoomed off. Before leaving, they threw our phones at us.”

PUNCH Metro gathered that immediately the gunmen left, a report was lodged at the Owutu Police Division.

However, the DPO was said to have denied that the gunmen were policemen.

PUNCH Metro learnt that since the incident, no one had been able to establish contact with Akubiro and his children. His wife Rita, who returned from South Africa the following day, was said to have received no calls concerning their whereabouts.

There was no response from the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ngozi Braide as she did not respond to calls and text message to her phone.

This is the more reason Nigeria will never produce a Mandela in the next 20 years with this tribal mentality of yours,
note that Mandela didn't segregate himself from other regions in South Africa unlike our own 'Mandela', GEJ that said he

Surely Goodluck Jonathan is the chosen one.
And the greatest, oh, my father and mentor, Nnamdi Azikiwe! Truly, great leaders are bred only in this part of the country even if the oppositions are too egocentric to admit it.

Segun Ogbere

There was tension in the Yaba and Bariga areas of Lagos State on Tuesday after the murder of a 36-year-old man, Segun Ogbere, who was killed by members of a gang known as Downtown Boys.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ogbere, who went by the pseudonym, Shaggy, was also alleged to be the leader of a gang known as Shaggy Boys.

According to Police sources, the victim is the key witness in a murder case against a former leader of the Ilajes in the state.

It was said that Ogbere was trailed from the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court by Downtown Boys led by one Balogun, aka Small Jaypron, and hacked to death.

A police source said, “The former leader is facing a murder charge at the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for the death of one James Areomiye, who was slain last year. Ogbere was our only witness in the case.

“We were told that as Ogbere was about leaving the court, he saw some Downtown Boys around the court so he sneaked out of the premises, entered a commercial tricycle and fled. The hoodlums saw him and chased him.

“Ogbere saw his friend driving a tipper so he alighted from the tricycle, entered the passenger seat of the tipper, thinking the thugs were no longer on his trail. However, the assailants soon caught up with him.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that around 3pm, Small Jaypron, in company with three others in a vehicle, crossed the tipper around Adeshina Street, off University Road, Abule Oja, and dragged Ogbere out of the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Metro that the hoodlums, who were wielding guns and knives, stabbed the deceased many times before fleeing.

“About four guys alighted from a red Volkswagen Gulf car and dragged the guy (Ogbere) out of the passenger seat and started stabbing the guy repeatedly and ripped out his intestines.

“Probably because this is a residential area and it’s always quiet, the guys did not fire a shot so as not to attract the attention of men of the Rapid Response Squad who are stationed on University Road.”

Our correspondent learnt that the incident caused a traffic snarl from University of Lagos gate down to Onike as loyalists of Shaggy were said to have protested his murder.

A landlady in the area, who wished to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the case, said policemen attached to Sabo Police Division did not respond to the distress call until an hour after the incident.

She said, “After the killing, about five of Shaggy’s boys, who were wielding guns, stormed the scene. As RRS men attempted to recover the corpse, the boys protested and beat up one Sergeant Innocent and vandalised the patrol vehicle.

“When we saw that the police were being overwhelmed, we alerted the Divisional Police Officer, Sabo, SP Anthony Aruna, but his men did not arrive until an hour later. It was members of the Odua Peoples Congress that were able to subdue them and arrest one of them.”

Meanwhile, our correspondent, learnt that Shaggy’s boys have threatened to carry out reprisals for their leader’s murder

Our correspondent, who visited Ilaje, Bariga area, on Wednesday, observed six police patrol vehicles in the area.

A senior police officer attached to Bariga Police Division, said, “We are here to ensure that the area remains peaceful. Ilaje is Shaggy’s stronghold and we want to forestall any reprisal.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, told our correspondent that the police had commenced investigations into the murder.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Balogun was arrested and charged with the murder of five people and was remanded in Ikoyi Prison but was released under controversial circumstances.

It had also been reported that many others had been killed in Bariga, Akoka, Yaba and Abule Ijesa areas due to the rivalry between the two gangs.

Braide said, “I am aware of the killing and the matter is now being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department Yaba. We are also on the trail of the suspects.”

The Peoples Democratic Party stirred up yet another controversy online after it said President Goodluck Jonathan could be regarded as the “Mandela of Nigeria”.

Although the party initially declared the first President of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, as the “Mandela of Nigeria,” it went on to say that Jonathan follows the late nationalist ‘closely’ in order of ranking.

A close observation shows that Jonathan topped the list of living past and present Nigerian leaders, which is posted on the PDP Facebook page.

The ruling party said its judgement was based on the result of online votes by its loyal Facebook followers numbering about 26, 500.

In a message posted on its Facebook page, the PDP noted that the outcome of the voting process, which lasted 24 hours, was “decidedly” transparent.

“Great fans, after 24 hours of voting, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe is decidedly – by the strength of your vote – the ‘Mandela of Nigeria’. He is followed closely by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,” the message reads.

The party ranked the first Premier of the Northern Region, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello; the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo; former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions, respectively, on the same list.

The late President Umar Yar’Adua; the late Prof. Chinua Achebe; former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, came next in the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth positions, respectively.

However, many Nigerians practically invaded the party’s Facebook page to register their displeasure with the PDP over the list.

While many of the protesters noted that the country lacked real leaders that can be compared with Nelson Mandela, others said Jonathan could not have emerged as the runner-up in any transparent ranking. They accused the PDP of manipulating the voting process as against the opinion of a truly representative proportion of the populace.

A cross section of those angered by the ranking also accused the party of using the death of Mandela as a tool for self-promotion.

A visitor to the PDP Facebook page, Imoh Okon, urged the party not to soil the image of the departed South African leader with its deceitful ‘Mandela of Nigeria’ project.

“Mandela fought to restore human integrity. In your (PDP) case, what is your goal? Is it tribalism or regional relevance or party supremacy? The least honour you could give Madiba is to keep his name away from this deceit. The PDP can surely do better than this by getting right thinking minds to maintain this page with some sensible packaging,” he wrote.

Another respondent, Bello Kolawole, described the list in its current form as the “joke of the century”.

Kolawole said it was unfortunate that eminent Nigerians like the late human rights lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi and the late environmental activist, Ken Saro Wiwa, could be pushed aside in preference for the President.

“This must be the joke of the century. Nobody made Mandela a hero. His goodwill and struggle for the emancipation of his people wrote his name in world’s history books. We do not have his likes in Nigeria,” he said.

Obviously irritated, Ibrahim Abdullah wrote, “The online poll must have been rigged as a tradition of the PDP. I stand to remain the last Nigerian to believe Goodluck Jonathan is Nigeria’s Nelson Mandela. This is impersonation, nothing more!”

Summing up the opinion of dozens of other people who lambasted the PDP for the ranking, Eghweree Ovie said, “None of the so-called leaders have made sacrifices for Nigeria, compared to what they have benefited from Nigeria.

“The PDP should please stop this nonsense analysis or comparison. Nigeria does not have Mandela or his like. What we have are the name that you just listed. Imagine you adding Goodluck Jonathan to the list. Even the Ijaw won’t consider him as their Mandela. The Mandela of Nigeria are the citizens who forgive those embezzling the public funds.”

But because the war was lost, his fame is not as large ae Mandela's, just as his (Mandela's) course would not have been global had he lost his own course.
