ROME (RNS) — Lurid accusations of priests involved in sex orgies, porn videos and prostitution have emerged from several parishes in Italy recently, sending shock waves all the way to the Vatican and challenging the high standards Pope Francis demands of clergy.
In the southern city of Naples, for example, a priest was recently suspended from the parish of Santa Maria degli Angeli over claims he held gay orgies and used Internet sites to recruit potential partners whom he paid for sex.
The allegations concerning the Rev. Mario D’Orlando were brought to the attention of the diocese when an anonymous letter was sent to a Naples bishop. D’Orlando denied the charges when he was summoned by the city’s archbishop, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, but is now facing a formal inquiry conducted by local church officials.
In the northern city of Padua, a 48-year-old priest, the Rev. Andrea Contin, is facing defrocking as well as judicial proceedings amid accusations he had up to 30 lovers, some of whom he took to a swingers’ resort in France.

Contin was removed from his parish of San Lazzaro after three women came forward with complaints against him in December. Bishop Claudio Cipolla of Padua cut short a visit to Latin America to deal with the scandal.
“I am incredulous and pained by the accusations,” Cipolla said at a news conference last month. “This is unacceptable behavior for a priest, a Christian and even for a man.”
One woman, who claims to have been Contin’s lover for more than three years, claimed the priest carried intimacy gadgets and bondage equipment, prostituted his lovers on wife-swapping websites and also invited other priests from the area to sex parties.
“Even if, at the end of this affair, there are no legal consequences, we have a duty by canon law to take disciplinary action,” said Cipolla.

He also revealed Pope Francis telephoned him personally at the end of January to offer his support and urge him to stay “strong.”
Since his election the pope has taken a tough line on ethical behavior in the church, though he has also recognized the reality of human imperfection and personal flaws.
In recent weeks the pontiff has spoken out many times against “temptation,” and last week he told a gathering of clergy at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome that faith could not progress without the challenge of temptation.
“Temptation is always present in our lives. Moreover, without temptation you cannot progress in faith,” he said.
Alberto Melloni, professor of church history at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, said there is nothing unusual about scandals in the priesthood.
“There is no sin that a cleric doesn’t commit. Scandals to me seem quite normal,” he said.
“And I think the illusion of stopping scandals through better selection of personnel is not very promising and has not yielded great results. ”
Francis has frequently called for a more rigorous screening process for seminarians, and he has taken direct action when scandals erupt in Italy.

A case in point: When reports of “playboy priests” surfaced in the Italian diocese of Albenga-Imperia in the northern region of Liguria in late 2014, the pope sent a special envoy to investigate claims that clerics had posted nude photos of themselves on gay websites, sexually harassed the faithful and stole church funds.
Two years later the pope replaced the leader of the diocese, Bishop Mario Oliveri.
Austen Ivereigh, commentator and author of The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope, said the pope distinguished between sinfulness and corruption and was intent on “rooting out” corruption inside the church.
“The remedy for those who succumb to temptation is forgiveness and a fresh start,” Ivereigh said. “The problem is when priests turn their backs on the people, lead hidden lives and end up justifying their conduct. That’s corruption.
“And it’s only possible in the priesthood because of clericalism. That’s why the pope is so intent on rooting it out.”

There was pandemonium yesterday when youths of Owutu Edda community in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State went on rampage over the shooting of a soldier in the community by policemen. In the melee, property worth millions of naira was destroyed....

Trouble started when officials of “Operation Safer Highway” of the police, at a police checkpoint along Nguzu Edda road, stopped a woman wearing a military cap on a motorcycle.

According to eyewitnesses, the woman had identified herself as the wife of a soldier, which angered one of the policemen at the checkpoint, who ordered her to call her husband before the cap could be released.
It was gathered that the woman made the call and her husband came to the scene only to be assaulted by the policemen, leading to more fisticuffs as the soldier resisted arrest by the policemen. In the process, one policeman shot him in the leg.

The youths, on hearing what happened to their soldier-brother, mobilised and attacked houses of all the policemen in the community, vandakising and burning household property.

Addressing the angry youths, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor David Umahi on Internal Security, Dr. Kenneth Ugballa, appealed to them to be calm, promising that government would look into the matter.

He condemned the shooting and assured them that the police authorities would investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

Meanwhile, the victim, Ikechukwu Nnachi, is currently receiving treatment in a military hospital in Ohafia, Abia State.

American rapper, Todd Anthony Shaw, who is simply known as Too Short, is being investigated in a rape case. According to a TMZ report, a woman whose name remains unknown, claims on November 1, 2016, she was at a residence in LA with the rapper, when he allegedly sexually attacked her.
She told the police that she was a virgin and gave no form of consent when the incident happened.
Sources close to Too Short told TMZ that the West Coast rapper never had sexual contact with the alleged victim. They said she was on his record label but was eventually dropped, which led to the made up allegation.
The sources also disclosed that the victim tried getting back to the label, and Short thinks this as a form of extortion. However, the rape case is still being investigated by the police.

Kenyan Police in Eldoret on Wednesday evening stormed a house at Kapsoya estate, where they arrested 24 secondary school students having a sex party.
According to Nairobi News, the students aged between 16 and 18 from different schools, were on half term break and had met in the house for the party.
They were arrested after residents of the estate called the police due to the loud music emanating from the house.

A police report revealed that empty bottles of alcohol, used condoms and a mattress was found in the house. While six other students escaped through the fence of the compound
The 24 students are presently detained at the Kapsoya Police Post.

A Zimbabwean teacher from Lupane was on Friday, February 17, 2017, kidnapped, drugged and gang-raped by four women, suspected to be 'Sperm harvesters.' The victim whose man name was withheld reportedly woke up naked in the bush, feeling extremely weak on Saturday morning. The man who already has filed a complaint at Lupane police station, said he was sexually abused for hours by a group of four light skinned women who gave him a lift on Friday night.
Speaking to Chronicle, a police source said the victim was given a lift in a Toyota Quantum with five people on board, four women and a man who was driving the vehicle.
'The teacher was intending to travel to Bulawayo on Friday night. He was given a lift by the group of women who were traveling in a Quantum with South African number plates.
The man said the women were speaking IsiNdebele and another language that he could not understand.
'After some time, the driver diverted the route and one of the women told him that they wanted to pick up someone,' the source said.
He also stated that after the driver stopped the car, one of the women quickly covered his eyes while others held his feet and hands together.
'The man said they forced him to drink a substance from a bottle and he passed out. He suspects that they sexually assault him and took away his semen as he woke up at 5AM naked with a weak body and bruised private part.
After wearing his clothes, which were left on the scene, he walked to the main road where he boarded a lift to Lupane police station and filed a report,' the source added.
The man was later taking to St Luke's Hospital for treatment.

Saudi authorities are now vigilant to eradicate drug peddling as smugglers around the world are adopting new innovative methods to carry drugs into the country.

According to Al Arabiya, the peddlers now smuggle drugs using the Quran. Pictures shared by the website also show drugs hidden in a Quran.
Drug peddlers are also using condoms for smuggling. Despite the huge risk of package splitting, smugglers do not hesitate to swallow bundles of drugs wrapped in condoms.
They previously used sheep's intestines, tangerines, tomatoes, peanut kernels, auto parts, gas cylinders, lamps and books for smuggling. One of the most common substance smuggled includes Captagon tablets. The drug acts as a mental and physical stimulant and is known to be used by Daesh to keep them awake during gun fights.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned one Usman Muhammad Dajji of the Gombe State Sharia Court of Appeal before Justice Sa'ad Muhammad of the Gombe State High Court on five count charges bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and forgery.


The suspect who is the Chairman of Sharia Court of appeal staff multipurpose Cooperative Society, Gombe was arrested by EFCC operatives following a petition by one Sani Abdullahi of Sam Omosco Nigeria Limited, a company that specializes in computer supplies and accessories, alleging that sometimes in December, 2012, the suspect approached him with a contract proposal to supply 3000 Units of Computer Laptop to the Sharia Court of Appeal Cooperative Society with a condition that he must pay the sum of N550,000.00 as commitment and processing fee before the execution of the contract.

The money was paid after being convinced as all document relating to the contract were presented.


Unknown to him that the suspect forged the official stamp of the Chief Registrar Sharia Court of Appeal, Gombe and the signature of one Abubakar Aliyu the Cooperative Society's Treasurer, for the furtherance of his dubious activities and diverted the said sum to his personal use.

Count one of the charge read:

“That you, Usman Muhammad Dajji, being the Chairman of Gombe State Sharia Court of Appeal Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society, sometimes in December, 2013 in Gombe, Gombe State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did with intend to defraud, obtained the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000) only from Sani Abdullahi of Samomasco Nigeria Limited under the false pretence that the said sum were to be utilizes for processing irrevocable standing payment order from the office of Accountant General Gombe State in favour of the company and diverted same to your personal used thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (1b) and punishable under section 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006”.


The accused person pleaded not guilty to all the charges read against him and the prosecution counsel S. M. Aliyu asked the court to fix a date for trial as all his witnesses and exhibits to tender before the court were ready.

In his ruling, Justice Sa'ad remanded the accuse person in prison custody pending the filing of his bail application while he adjourned the case to Monday, 13 March 2017, for trial.

Chairman of the University Of Calabar Academic Staff Union Of Universities, ASUU, has declared that the union will not surrender until government does the needful by addressing the union’s demands.

Eyang told Vanguard on Thursday in Calabar that though it is regrettable that the union is taking such a stand but it is in the interest of education which has been subjected to untold neglect by successive governments in the country.

GOVERNOR of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, on Thursday took his 56th birthday celebration to the market centres where he feted people on the streets.

Fayose had clocked 56 years on Tuesday and the people came from near and far to Ekiti government house to felicitate with the governor.



Fayose distributed cake and cash to market women and other onlookers at the popular Bisi Market in Ado Ekiti capital city and other locations in the state capital.


Fayose said the gesture was “to demonstrate his love for the people of the state, who voted for me massively to become the governor during the June 21, 2014 governorship poll.

“I understood clearly that these are people who ordinarily would not have had the opportunity to come to the government house to celebrate with me. But I have to show them love.

“I can’t sit in the Government House and enjoy every comfort in the world without thinking of the people on the streets.
