A proselytes is a person who converts from one religion to another.
In this context,a proselytes refers to someone who converts to a Jew.

Those cities listed from verse 7-11 are where the Jews or proselytes came from..

For example,Say i am Galilean and suddenly i become a Jewish convert.
I will have to learn their language and culture,that doesn't mean i will forget my own language.

This is exactly what happened.

The reason for the suprise in acts 2 was not because people spoke different languages.

The shock was because people from other regions spoke the native Jew language.

These guys(the proselytes and the folks that came from other nations) spoke the Jewish language.they were either Jews(by birth) or became Jews by conversion.


Paul clearly stated in 1cor14:2 that tongues is not human language.
It can not and never be understood by man.

My brother, the more you explain this the more you sound funny. I can't buy some lame excuse why people shouldn't covet the gift of communication in another language to make the spread of the gospel more effective. Thus no need looking for interpreters.
What have u achieved with the unknown tongue that you so much advocate for.
Won't you rather be equipped with:
power: you say things and it happens or pronounce healing upon a sick person.
Knowledge: you perform feats as if though they were your field of expertise.
Prophecy: you have a divine understanding and solution to what seems so mysterious and challenging to others.
Wisdom etc.
I can achieve a lot with these and help others as well.
Also let me ask you, how can you differentiate between real from fake tongues. Pls give examples of people you know that have real and fake tongues

Nobody spoke any foreign language.
The confusion about tongues we have in the body of Christ today emanated from the book of Acts chapter because many people like yourself failed to understand that the book of Acts was not written for doctrinal explanation.
It was a historic writings.
Just like the four Gospels,mattew.Mark,Luke,John.

So there is no doctrinal explanation of the events that happened in the book of Acts.

The Pentecost is called the feast of weeks.i.e 7weeks after the Passover.

Just like 'PENT'agon, meaning "5" sided.
Pentecost means 50 days after the Passover.
Read the books of Moses to get a better understanding.
The pentecost is a feast for Jews.
Read Exodus 12,13,Deut 16,Leviticus 23.

Only Jews were present on the day of Pentecost.Acts 2:5.

Jews came from all over the world for the feast of Pentecost.

Infact go to Acts20:16.
This was many years after Acts2.

Paul was a jew who lived in Asia at that point in time.
Paul was at Asia,but he had to hurry down to Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost.

Will you call Paul an Asian because he lives there ? NO.
Paul was a Jew but he was in Asia as at Acts 20:16.

So everybody in at the day of Pentecost were Jews and Jews alone.

The folks that spoke in tongues in Acts 2 also Prophesied.
Peter said this when he quoted Joel2:28,
read acts 2:17-18,

according to The Epistles,1cor14:1-4
vs 4 especially.

prophesy is Tongues+interpretation of tongues.

Go back and do your study well then come back to ask questions.

Tongues was never meant to preach the Gospel.

Read through the books of Acts from chapter 1-15.
You will see that the Apostles never preached to a non Jew.
Until acts 10 when the Lord told Peter in a vision to go to the house of Cornelius.
After Peter preached to them.

They returned back to Jerusalem and they never preached to a non-Jew.
They continued preaching to Jews alone.

Please read Acts 2:4-12 so up you will understand what real tongue is and nor some verbose cacophony. Do the real tongue that's a proof of holy ghost baptism

Covet tongues, dude. By GOD'S grace I will try to deal specifically on speaking in tongues one of these days here on Nairaland. It's not something one should talk about shabbily. I write based on Scriptures and my personal experience from my walk with the HOLY GHOST.

Hey dude the bible talks about DIVERS KIND of tongues. The Scriptures says these signs follow them that believe. Speaking in NEW tongues is one of the signs that SHOULD follow a believer in Jesus Christ. As important as evangelism is I wonder why God would dedicate a whole chapter of the Bible to talk about (TONGUES) something that's "not important"

Be slow to speak and be quick to listen. How many souls have you won? Unless you didn't read through the exposition thoroughly, you should seen where I wrote that there are other spiritual gifts but that I decided to single out how to get filled with the HOLY GHOST.

I only highlighted speaking in tongues because it is usually the most likely manifestation when you get filled. I didn't even say anything further about speaking in tongues. It is a topic on its own.

I must point out thing I have come to realise. It is that Christians who cannot speak in tongues are always negatively critical of those who have the gift. I won't be surprised if you lack the gift.

[size=15pt]There are many gifts of the Holy Spirit TO ME tongue is not the most important. Agreed that according to the Bible, speaking in tongues edifies one spirit but surprisingly the Almighty understands all languages both acquired tongues, mother tongues and even the devils tongues. And there's no evidence anywhere in the Bible that prayers are better answered when prayed in unknown tongues.
I'd rather go for the gifts I consider more evidently useful to me and beneficial to people around me like spiritual power, knowledge and prophecy.
Besides the tongue I considered exceptionally real gift is as recorded in Acts chapter 1 when the Holy Ghist fell on the apostles, it gave them power to speak in other languages they never learnt before so they could be able to preach to foreigners in the later own language thus making the spread of the gospel easier and more interesting.
I doubt if any christian has such power now. Imagine you speaking im Arabic in the midst of Arabs so u can communicate better in evangelism. That is what I consider spiritual gift not some verbose cacophony
