I dare you to point me to any country that produces all the raw materials they use in crafting their goods.

No one justified petty crimes because of the existence of its more dangerous counterpart. That's a blatant distortion of the comment and you know it. What's being argued here is that the punishment should fit the crime. The disproportionate treatment of this thief pales in comparison to the endless moaning and huffed whimpering that have been thrown at the marauders invading their lands for years. And it only broadcasts their cowardice to the world.

All this anger and vitriol for an unarmed thief and nothing for herdsmen and bandits that have killed thousands of your people for years and still continue to to this day.
