Nigeria has the highest number of children contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, in the world, the latest report by the United Nations has shown. The report says nearly 60,000 Nigerian children were infected with the virus in 2012, a figure higher than that of any other country in the world, and is a source of worry for experts with one describing it as “alarming.” The report titled “2013 PROGRESS REPORT ON THE GLOBAL PLAN: towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015 and keeping their mothers alive” is the most recent on the global plan which seeks an elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015, as well as keep their mothers alive. A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari, and a former Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nasir el-Rufai, have emerged as interim national officers of the yet to be registered All Progressives Congress, APC, a merger of some opposition political parties. While Mr. Masari from Katsina State will serve as the Deputy National Chairman, Mr. el-Rufai, an indigene of Kaduna State, will serve as Deputy National Secretary. The names of both chieftains of the Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, have been forwarded to the Joint Inter-Party Merger Committee, JIMC, which will submit them to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Italian coach, Carlo Ancelotti, as their new manager. Ancelloti replaces Jose Mourinho, who left the Spanish giants at the end of last season. Ancelloti leaves French Champions, Paris Saint German, PSG, who have promptly announced former France Coach, Laurent Blanc as their new manager. “Real Madrid will present Carlo Ancelotti as new coach of the first team for the next three seasons on Wednesday June 26,” the Spanish giants stated on their website. The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has denied media reports that its national leader, Bola Tinubu, has appointed his daughter as successor to his recently deceased mother for the post of ‘Iyaloja’ of Lagos State. Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES over the telephone, the party dismissed the reports as “rantings” of the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP. “The (ACN) leadership is not aware of it. It is not true and can never be true,” said Joe Igbokwe, spokesperson, Lagos ACN. Despite persistent criticisms over the state of affairs in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, its National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, on Monday came to its defence, saying it does not condone illegality but is committed to rule of law at all times. At least 16 members of the People’s Democratic Party’s National Working Committee resigned their positions Thursday at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting boycotted by seven governors. Governors Sule Lamido of Jigawa state and Murtala Nyako of Adamawa state-known critics of the President Goodluck Jonathan- are not attending the meeting; as well as some of the president’s supporters-Governors Gabriel Suswam of Benue, Martins Elechi of Ebonyi, Sullivan Chime of Enugu and Ibrahim Shema of Katsina states. The Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman, Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Ike Ekweremadu said none of the 61 requests for state creation got the committee’s nod. Mr. Ekweremadu stated this in Abuja on Wednesday when Enugu State Government Committee on the Actualisation of Adada State, led by retired Major Gen. The Aids Healthcare Foundation, a Los Angeles-based global organisation that provides medicine and advocacy in 28 countries on Monday declared its commitment towards reducing HIV transmission in Nigeria. In a statement signed by the Advocacy Manager, AHF, Oluwakemi Gbadamosi, the organization, in line with its preventive advocacy measures, has set up various strategies to bring down barriers in accessing the use of condom as noted as core evidence based HIV prevention strategy. Lamenting on the spiked hike in the increase of new HIV infections in Nigeria with 300,000 new infections recorded in 2012, Mr. Gbadamosi indicated that the organization is making efforts with education and awareness on the use of condoms for safer sex. The Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, may approve the recommendations of the Stephen Oronsaye-led presidential committee on the rationalisation and restructuring of federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs). Part of the recommendations was the scrapping of some parastatals, agencies and commissions; a move that has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians and labour unions. The Council, which began deliberations on the Committee’s White Paper last Wednesday, is expected to give its final approval or review the recommendations on Wednesday during its weekly meeting. Dozens of youth in northeast states, seeking out and handing over Boko Haram insurgents to soldiers, are “new national heroes” whose collaboration with the military, enforcing emergency rule in the area, has proven critics of the operation “clueless”, President Goodluck Jonathan said Sunday. Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has warned his Plateau State counterpart, Jonah Jang, to stop impersonating him as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. Mr. Amaechi was on May 24 reelected chairman of the NGF, defeating his only challenger, Mr. Jang, 19 to 16 votes, despite massive opposition from the presidency and the top hierarchy of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. But despite losing the election, captured on video, the Plateau State governor had continued to lay claim to the chairmanship of the NGF, and had indeed set up a parallel office for the Forum. A commercial bus and a car have plunged into the Lagos lagoon, at the Adekunle end of the Third Mainland Bridge. Unconfirmed sources say the car was a Toyota Corolla. Suspended Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto has described the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bamanga Tukur, as an incompetent party leader who should be sacked immediately and replaced with former chairman Ahmadu Ali. Describing Mr. Tukur as a man on a mission to destroy the party and the North, the governor said no matter how hard the PDP chairman tried, he would not support a PDP Governors’ Forum led by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio. President Goodluck Jonathan has described June 12 as a unique day “that has changed the political history of this country in one way or the other.” Mr. Jonathan, who spokes to State House reporters in Abuja, said, “In some parts of the country some state governments have declared public holiday to mark today, but at the centre it has not been formally recognised as a public holiday.” The president did not say whether o not he would heed the calls to recognise the day. President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his dismay that the most senior officials of many of Nigeria’s military and para-militaary security agencies are incompetent and do not merit their positions; thus leading to a dismal performance by the agencies. The president, who stated this while inaugurating the Police Service Commission on Wednesday at the State House, Abuja, called for a total overhaul of the security agencies, and charged the commission to flush out the bad eggs in the police. He charged the new police commission chairman, Mike Okiro, and the other five members, to instil discipline in the force and ensure that promotions are done purely on merit. The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, on Wednesday said that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is committed to reinforcing democratic institutions in Nigeria, adding that Nigerians have failed in holding their local leaders accountable. The Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Jerry Obasi, in Ebonyi, said on Tuesday that he narrowly escaped assassination on Monday in Abakaliki. He said in Abakaliki that four gunmen allegedly attacked him at his Hill Top residence. The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has lamented its treatment by the federal government, saying the government is, by its actions, crippling the agency’s activities. The agency, which has won local and international commendations for its audit of the oil and gas industry, as well as other industries in the extractive sector, said that between 2011 and 2013, the federal government slashed its budget by 50 per cent. At least 16 suspected Boko Haram members were killed in separate incidents by security personnel in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in the last 48 hours; while the sect’s members allegedly shot dead 13 civilians in the troubled city, sources said. PREMIUM TIMES reporter on Saturday saw decomposing corpses of eight people, believed to be members of the Boko Haram. The corpses were dumped in a ditch near Biu road bridge of Maiduguri even as residents of the area said the victims died on the spot after a shootout between them and soldiers at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta has arrested a man suspected to be involved in the killing of 11 policemen in Bayelsa in April. Colonel Farouk Yahaya, who represented JTF Commander, Bata Debiro, said the suspect was a 25-year-old man. Mr. Yahaya said the arrest of the suspect was the result of :high intelligence work’’ of security agencies in the state. The federal government on Friday grounded a helicopter conveying the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, to Anambra. Mr. Oshiomhole was airborne when aviation authorities contacted the pilot, James Manahash, and ordered him to return to Benin, the Edo State Capital. The Nigeria Air Space Management Agency reportedly asked the pilot to go pay some dues he should have paid before takeoff. Over one hour after the pilot returned to Benin, under Mr. Oshiomhole’s instructions, the governor angrily left the chartered aircraft and zoomed off in his official car when the pilot was not being promptly attended to at the airport. Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on Thursday queried the appearance of a prosecutor in a suit against a former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, charged with money laundering. Mr. Fani-Kayode is standing trial on a 47-count charge, bordering on alleged mismanagement of aviation funds. The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Akwa Ibom on Thursday sanctioned 49 members of its 2012 Batch ‘B’ set for violating service rules. The Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Akinkumi Martins, made the announcement at the passing out ceremony of the corps members in Uyo. He said three of the corps members would repeat their service year, while 47 would have their service year extended for between two to four months. “Corps members who refuse to keep to the rules of the scheme will have their service year extended according to the offences committed. The African Peoples Congress, which was denied registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has soft-pedaled, and is willing to enter negotiation with the All Progressives Congress, APC, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. The African Peoples Congress, which had been in an acronym war with the APC, before its application for registration as a political party was rejected by the electoral body, is currently challenging its disqualification in court.
