When on August 24, 2010, Nigeria’s first lady, Patience Jonathan, publicly scolded Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, it was clear that the seed of discord between the Jonathans the governor had been sown. However, the discord did not manifest fully until almost three years later, in February 2013. The residents of Palam in Shuwa area of Madagali Local Government in Adamawa State now have their first major source of water, a well. Ponds and small-scale irrigation reservoirs, situated several kilometres from where the residents of the community live, have been the main sources of drinking water for the community. The residents, though entitled to better quality and clean water provided by the government, were grateful that after decades of trekking long distances to get water to drink, a well had been sunk in their community. The Senate appealed for calm on Tuesday as it sought to douse days of public fury that has greeted its failure, last week, to delete a controversial constitutional provision which deals with citizenship, but which appears to sanction child marriage. The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Tuesday announced the accreditation of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Agriculture. The commission also announced the approval for Engineering courses for the University of Abuja. The Chairman of the Task Team on the accreditation of the College of Medicine and Visiting Professor to NUC, Eugene Okpere, made this known when the team for the accreditation of the four courses that were suspended did a tour of facilities at the university. The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Monday threatened to join the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in solidarity strike if the Federal Government fails to address the ASUU demands. The NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar, made the threat at the opening ceremony of the “2013 Rain School” in Uyo. The university lecturers have been on strike for over three weeks, paralysing activities in public universities. Eight governors of the yet to be registered All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday paid a solidarity visit to the embattled Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, at the Government House, Port Harcourt; during which they condemned the crisis in the state and demanded the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan. The Court of Appeal in Lagos, on Friday last week, discharged and acquitted Hamza Al-Mustapha and Lateef Sofolahan from the murder of Kudirat Abiola. The judgment of the appeal court overturned that of the Lagos High Court which sentenced both men to death by hanging. The Plateau State Government has sacked 2, 000 unqualified teachers. The state government had earlier stated its intention to sack 11,000 unqualified teachers. The Chairman of the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Lyop Mang, on Tuesday endorsed the sack letters of the 2,000 Grade II teachers on its payroll. The Plateau Commissioner for Information and Communication, Yiljap Abraham, said the sacked teachers used false certificates to get their employment. The presidency has accused multinational oil companies of complicity in the increased rate of crude oil theft in the Niger Delta. The Special Assistant to the President on Amnesty, Kingsley Kuku, has said the companies are aware that their Nigerian employees engage in oil theft in the Niger Delta region and do nothing about it. Mr. Kuku also alleged that highly placed individuals and groups were sponsors of those stealing the nation’s crude oil. The Federal Government has again pleaded with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call off its strike and return to the classes. The Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, made the call on Tuesday in an interview with newsmen after a Workshop on World Bank Initiated Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE) Project in Abuja. “We are still pleading with them, let them do all they can to make our students return to classes. We are talking, and we will continue to talk. We are also meeting with all stakeholders to resolve the crisis, and we are confident that very soon, the strike will be called off,” Ms. Rufa’i said. Nigerian Polytechnic lecturers have suspended their indefinite strike currently in its third month; and agreed to return to work. Nigeria is one of the 22 countries that have achieved 25 per cent decline in HIV prevalence from six to four per cent, President Goodluck Jonathan has said. The President stated this at one of the sessions of the ongoing Abuja +12 Summit of the African Union, on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), Malaria and other Related Infectious Diseases, titled “Innovative Action to Deliver on Unfinished Business”. The meeting between striking university lecturers’ and federal legislators was deadlocked on Monday. The meeting, held at the National Assembly Complex, failed to resolve the contending issues. The meeting was initially delayed reportedly due to the late arrival of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim. The lecturers, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, were said to have insisted on a 100 per cent implementation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government; while the lawmakers and government officials present requested partial implementation. The National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ayo Oritsejafor, has hailed the sentencing of four Boko Haram members to life imprisonment by an Abuja High Court. He also questioned the claim of a ceasefire agreed with the outlawed Boko Haram sect. Mr. Oritsejafor stated this at the presentation of a book, “Shunpiking: No Shortcuts to God’’, written by Reno Omokri, Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media. The embattled governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, has raised the alarm about his safety after military authorities abruptly withdrew soldiers detailed to the Rivers State Government House on Wednesday in a new twist to the political tumult that has enveloped the state. The Federal High Court, Abuja, has set September 20 for judgment in a suit filed by Delta State Government against the Federal Government over ownership of $15 million (N2.4 billion). The money is alleged to be bribe offered former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, by convicted former Delta governor, James Ibori. The Federal High Court on Wednesday in Abuja fixed October 7 for the adoption of addresses on terrorism charges brought against Kabiru Umar, alias “Kabiru Sokoto”. Justice Adeniyi Ademola reserved the date after Mr. Umar closed his defence. In closing his evidence, the accused said: “I am not a member of the Boko Haram and so I could not have been a member of the Shura Council of the Sect”. The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Restoration of Peace in the North-East, Tanimu Turaki, has told PREMIUM TIMES his committee has reached an “understanding for ceasefire” with members of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lil Da’awati Wal Jihad, popularly known as Boko Haram. There were unconfirmed reports Monday that the Federal Government had signed an agreement with the sect. But the Special Duties Minister said his committee had indeed reached an understanding with the sect, but that an agreement was yet to be signed. The Rivers police command said on Sunday in Port Harcourt it had rescued three members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, who were abducted on June 29. Angela Agabe, the command’s Public Relations Officer, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the corps members were freed on July 6 at Abua town in Rivers. The three corp members -two male and one female-were seized by gunmen in the Abua/Odual local government area of Rivers while boarding a speed boat at a waterfront. Nigerian refugees currently in the border areas of Niger Republic may soon return home three weeks after Boko Haram forced them to flee their homes, as Borno state deputy governor, Zannah Mustapha, at the weekend, visited and assured them of safety. Mr. Mustapha’s assurance came as violence erupted in neighbouring Yobe state where suspected Boko Haram militants killed at least 20 students and a teacher in a school raid. The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has called on the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to stop mixing males and females during physical exercises at its orientation camps for corps members. The group, an umbrella organisation for Islamic groups in Northern Nigeria, said mixing males and females violates Islamic tenets and called on the authorities concerned to put members of different sex in different camps. An Irish hacker, angered by Nigeria’s stance on homosexuality, has attacked Nigeria’s official government website in an attempt to coerce President Goodluck Jonathan to veto a bill seeking to jail homosexuals. The attack happened on Thursday night and normalcy only returned to the site at about 5:00 a.m. on Friday. It is not known whether it was the government that regained control or whether the attackers simply suspended the attack. The anti-gay bill, passed by Nigeria’s National Assembly and generously supported by Nigerians, seeks to jail convicted homosexuals for 14 years. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Wednesday denied statements credited to her on the 2013 budget crisis, saying she has no intention to pitch the National Assembly against either President Goodluck Jonathan or the executive arm of government. The embattled minister drew the anger of the two Chambers of the National Assembly on Tuesday following reports that she had warned, while appearing on an Abuja-based radio programme on Monday, that the country would shutdown if the impasse on the 2013 budget was not resolved. Ms. Okonjo-Iweala, however, told State House correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja that at no time during the radio programme did she say that the government or country was going to shutdown if the contentious issues in the budget were not resolved. A psychiatrist at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Biodun Idowu, said on Saturday that more women were falling into mental depression due to increased marital challenges. A deadly student protest at the University of Uyo, UNIUYO, which left at least one student dead and key offices razed a fortnight ago, erupted after the Vice Chancellor and two deputies repeatedly ignored red flags, and indeed, fueled the crisis presumably to save their skin from a possible graft investigation, the school’s chief of security has told the National Universities Commission, NUC.
