Why in the world would someone want to have an American accent? There really is no American accent truly, because it can vary wildly depending on which region of the states that you live in.

Primarily, there is the New-England accent, The "New Yorker/east coast" accents, The Mid Atlantic (no traceable accent at all).  There is the "Southern Drawl" and the "Texas Twang" is all it's own. Honorable mention to the Creole/Cajun accent of Louisiana.

Then you have the California accent. I call that the "surfer dude" accent. It's so cute, hee hee.

I'm sure in Nigeria there are many dialects and accents depending on region. In American TV, broadcasters tend to go with the Mid Atlantic/no accent because everyone can understand it.

Yes, you can learn all things thug and more on BET (hanging head in shame). BTW, BET wasn't always like it is now. BET used to be quite sophisticated.

Look, just because of [/s]Americanization[s] Globalization, don't think the American way is always the best way. As the AA's would say here, "Do You!"

I just want to say that I wish you well. I'm not with a husband or family, but I know what it is to struggle for everything; when even ice cream is a luxury. Yes, ice cream and treats can be a luxury item for a lot of Americans as well.

When I was younger, there were a lot of things my brothers and I just couldn't have. My parents simply couldn't afford it. It hurt at the time, but then like someone mentioned, parents do need to talk truthfully about the value of money.

You know, when I was a teenager, and I grew tired of "I can't, I can't afford it", I got myself a job. I was old enough to do so, and it taught me independence, and my parents were so proud of me.

When I became an adult living on my own, I had to do the adult things, like pay bills and such. It's not easy! It doesn't feel good to not be able to afford things. You may not be destitute, but you have a right to live at a certain standard.

Part of being an adult is making hard decisions. You have to be "okay" with your motives, and they seem to be in the right place. One day your children will understand, and love you all the more for it. Just talk to them about why you have to do this.

It's a great thing you have the love and support of your husband. But for the sake of your family and marriage (people do get lonely, and they need comforting) I would make a reunion plan as soon as humanly possible. God Bless.

My passions, hmmm. I like reading, writing, participating on forums. I like TV and News about US politics. I like food.

I love music of just about all kinds. I love dancing. I love arts and culture. Which would partially explain why I am here. I have befriended and dated people of many cultures, and I want to continue to learn about the Nigerian culture. I believe I'm probably a decendant of Nigerian people. Unfortunately, I'll never know for sure.

That's me in a nutshell. Or yes, I'm single.

You say Nigerian men don't make babies all over the place. Good. But most AA men don't either. I didn't know if you were implying this but I wanted to put it out there.

I just have to say, I've talked with my best friend who is white and she says a white woman will raise hell just as much as a black woman.

She was angry that black men think white woman are such doormats, and pleasant. She says "We are NOT!"

Bottom line like someone said, treat a woman right, most of the time she'll treat you right.

Hurt her, mistreat her, and you will feel her wrath.

It's that simple.

Hi, I am finally logging in as a member. I have been lurking this board for almost 3 months now. I love this board.

I found this board because I "Googled" a thread on African Americans with Nigerians. I am an African American woman.

It has been very informative and pleasant for me to visit this board. I hope to make some new friends here, and share my perspectives as well as an AA female.

I must say, there are some, very few, that aren't accepting of us (AA's, women in particular). I hope I can shed some light on the sterotypes and you can learn the truth about our perspective, as I learn the truths about your perspectives.

I have read post from members that I REALLY enjoy. Some aren't around anymore, some still are, so I can't wait to post to them. I like what I have read from Seun so far (oh great Forum leader)

He wrote a saying that I have adopted : "Those that can't handle the truth deserve all the lies they get". I use that as my signature on other forums I belong to. Thanks for that.
