Nairaland General1st Nigerian To Represent Nigeria In World Speaking Contest In Las Vegas by Drmaverick(op): 3:10pm On Jul 22, 2015
Most of us will shy away from any opportunity to speak to a crowd or even to address a few persons....its understandablecheesy.I recently did a personality test and was classified as an extrovert, lively, outgoing and loud personality.I occasionally step up to the plate if I needed to address people, but I lacked something in that regard,a certain Je ne sais quoi,a finesse, that art of making words seem alive. Elbert Hubbard in 1908 said: Art is not a thing — it is a way. It is not the thing I say it is the way I say it, that makes it the art.

Emmanuel Fadahunsi has harnessed the art form in delivering well crafted and intriguing speeches that would spur your emotional core, and that's why on the 9th of May, 2015, Emmanuel Fadahunsi,of Seaside Toastmasters Club emerged the District 94 (WestAfrica) Champion of Public Speaking, at the District’s Spring Conference in Azalai de la Plage Hotel, Cotonou, Benin Republic, winning six other finalists from across the eleven West African Countries that make up District 94. His “Don‟t let it in”, speech about how you can only be brought down in life if you let in the challenges , a speech inspired by a terrifying boat experience which Emmanuel reflected on,this taught him a vital lesson; water from the sea cannot sink a boat unless it gets inside.

RomanceObsession With BOOTY by Drmaverick(op): 2:32pm On Jun 08, 2015
Readers discretion advised o!!!1

What’s driving the current global obsession with Booty,Arsenal ,Ikebe, bakassi, butt, नितंब, culo, matako, طيز , patootie, 屁股 and whoopee cakes?… These news flashes and more in this week’s Sex in the Press.

In recent years, booty – a strongly-curved bum – has bounced far beyond its traditional strongholds of hip-hop videos and communities in Africa and Latin America.

'Butts' have taken over 'breasts' as common search term. Butt implants are currently the mostly quickly growing form of plastic surgery worldwide. International fashion designers are developing bum-enhancing jeans. Electronic music companies now sell devices that can sample twerking – the shaking of a strongly-curved bums – and turn these movements into beats, to inspire more twerking.

Nairaland GeneralChimamanda Adichie's Father Kidnapped by Drmaverick(op): 2:15pm On Jun 08, 2015
"MY father was kidnapped in Nigeria on a Saturday morning in early May. My brother called to tell me, and suddenly there was not enough breathable air in the world. My father is 83 years old. A small, calm, contented man, with a quietly mischievous humor and a luminous faith in God, his beautiful dark skin unlined, his hair in sparse silvery tufts, his life shaped by that stoic, dignified responsibility of being an Igbo first son
He got his doctoral degree at Berkeley in the 1960s, on a scholarship from the United States Agency for International Development; became Nigeria’s first professor of statistics; raised six children and many relatives; and taught at the University of Nigeria for 50 years. Now he makes fun of himself, at how slowly he climbs the stairs, how he forgets his cellphone. He talks often of his childhood, endearing and rambling stories, his words tender with wisdom.

Sometimes I record his Igbo proverbs, his turns of phrase. A disciplined diabetic, he takes daily walks and is to be found, after each meal, meticulously recording his carbohydrate grams in a notebook. He spends hours bent over Sudoku. He swallows a handful of pills everyday. His is a generation at dusk.

On the morning he was kidnapped, he had a bag of okpa, apples and bottled water that my mother had packed for him. He was in the back seat of his car, his driver at the wheel, on a lonely stretch between Nsukka, the university town where he lives, and Abba, our ancestral hometown. He was going to attend a traditional meeting of men from his age group. A two-hour drive. My mother was planning their late lunch upon his return: pounded yam and a fresh soup. They always called each other when either traveled alone. This time, he didn’t call. She called him and his phone was switched off. They never switched off their phones. Hour after hour, she called and it remained off. Later, her phone rang, and although it was my father’s number calling, a stranger said, “We have your husband.”

SURVIVING THE CLARION CALL

First, I must say a big congratulations to you. It wasn't no easy step to reach this very stage of your life. By Tuesday, 5th of May, you would be entering the all famous NYSC Camp. For three weeks you would live, eat, sleep and even dream inside that camp. Now, these are the five top things I want you to know.

1). My brothers and sisters, please if you truly still love your life and that of your stomach too, I beg you with all the love I possess! Please do not, I repeat, DO NOT, eat the beans they will share during dining hours. Please do not try to eat it. Some of us that mistakenly ate it had some stories that touch to tell. Even if hunger is killing you, do not eat the camp beans. It was specially prepared to purge away the sins and sorrows inside your stomach.

2). Men and brethren, its no longer news that they steal even boxers inside NYSC camp. Truth is, someone's toothbrush was even stolen. Therefore, ensure that you sleep with your waist bag, also go to camp with an extra ghana must go bag that is empty. Use it and lock your buckets, soap, sponge, slippers etc. If not, you will end up buying uncountable number of buckets. When you are charging your phone, ensure that you STAY THERE. Don't beg another person to look after it for you... otherwise, you definitely love stories that touch.
