Sharing a kiss is no doubt the simplest way to engage with your partner and express that giddy feeling of butterflies they give you. Of course, it’s such a normal thing that we don’t even bat an eye anymore when we do it, or see it. But like anything else, there’s more beneath the surface about kissing, like health benefits, origins of etymology, and the science of kissing. Kissing uses more muscles than you think. In total, one kiss uses 146 muscles working together. You may think the majority of those are in your face, but actually 112 of those are postural muscles, and the remainder 34 is various facial muscles. Even so, the muscle used the most in a kiss is the muscle around your mouth of course, called the orbicularis oris. How did researchers find out something like this? Well, they studied couples kissing underneath an MRI scanner. Imagine that experiment! The world record for the longest kiss. There is a Guinness World Record for the longest- lasting kiss, and it’s insanely high! Thai couple, Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat held a kiss for 58 hours, 35 minutes, and 58 seconds without a break. If that’s not a symbol of love, I don’t know what is! To emphasize this impressive feat even more, the average person spends two weeks of their life kissing – about 20,160 minutes in total. I imagine the total amount of time kissing by this record breaking Thai couple must be even higher! There’s actually health benefits to kissing. When you lock lips, your mouth produces extra saliva which helps clean your mouth and prevent tooth decay! Although keep in mind, that one kiss can carry up to 80 million new bacteria, which may be a turn off if you’re a germophobe. Rest assured, research implies that this bacteria swapping and sharing microbes is good for you and boosts your immune system. Worried about your complexion? Kissing can also minimize dermatitis and blemishes on your skin. Kiss-a-phobia is a real fear. Afraid to have your first kiss? Many people are nervous at first, which is normal! But there is a phobia for pretty much everything, and kissing is no exception. The fear of kissing is officially known as philemaphobia which makes sense, because the Greek word for kissing is “philema”. Of course, this can occur not only in young people, but lovers of all ages. Sometimes it may not get better unless you seek therapy! Which way do you lean? While your reaction to kissing feels like a natural response, for the most part, our kissing style can be traced back to when we were still in our momma’s stomach! The majority of people will tilt their head to the right when they kiss. This may seem like a socialized trait, but it actually goes back even further. The theory goes, is that we lean to the right because when we were in the womb, we naturally tilted our heads to the right. The next time you lean in for a smooch, keep in mind that two-thirds of people will lean to the right, although there may be the occasional left- tilter, so watch out for head bumps! There is a science behind kissing… If you want to follow a career in kissing, you can! The study of kissing is called philematology, while the person who studies kissing is called an osculologist. Now that’s a mouthful! If you choose to pursue this study, you’ll learn deeper about things like how many calories a kiss burns (3 per minute), or that lips are like snowflakes in that no two lip impressions are the same!

Farting is just as natural as yawning or blinking. It’s a bodily function we can’t control and it’s something we can’t avoid. Factually talking about flatulence, there’s many an interesting little things to learn. From the speed of a fart, to why they smell, and just what exactly they’re made of, you can read all about it here with these fourteen fart-tastic facts! 1. 99% of a fart is odorless. Only 1% of a fart is made of hydrogen sulphide, the stuff that smells extremely bad. The other 99% is non-smelling stuff like carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and methane. 2. In Britain, they sometimes call a fart a “Trump”. Yup, that’s right, President Fart. There’s many a colloquialism for farting, and many more national – and even regional – variations around the world. One such is the British slang ‘Trump,” which why you’ll catch your British friends chuckling when you mention the President by name. 3. Vegetarians fart more than carnivores. Well, for the most part anyway. Generally speaking, vegetarians tend to eat more beans than their meat-eating counterparts. Beans contain carbohydrates made of molecules too large for absorption into the small intestine during digestion. Because of this, they pass into the large intestine still intact which increases certain bacteria to break them down, producing large amounts of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas. 4. Although vegetarians may fart more, meat-eaters’ farts smell worse. Due to the increased sulphur in meat, more hydrogen sulphide is created during digestion when meat is broken down. 5. In 2014, a study was conducted by a Flatologist Dr. Michael Levitt, M.D, which found that women produce more hydrogen sulphide during digestion and as a result their farts smell worse. Sorry ladies, you might be the winners of fart etiquette, but you’re the losers of this one! 6. The world’s oldest joke is a fart joke. Toilet humor is global – it doesn’t matter what language you speak when we’re all unified in our bodily functions, but apparently fart jokes are also timeless as well as universal. The oldest known joke in history is a Sumerian proverb that dates back to 1900 BC that says “Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband’s lap.” What a classic. 7. Farts can be highly flammable. This is due to the fact that there’s methane and hydrogen in your farts, both of which are flammable and can be ignited. But don’t worry, you can’t explode by lighting one. 8. Farts are faster than hoverboards. A fart speeds out of you at 3.05 meters a second, that’s 7 miles per hour. So they might be faster than hoverboards, but the jury is still out on whether or not they’re more flammable! 9. Your butt can tell the difference between a fart and a poop. The tactile nerve endings in a person’s rectum can distinguish the difference in sensation caused by each. However, there is one exception: the runs! This is due to the liquid consistency which confuses your poor nerve endings. 10. Although it can be uncomfortable, holding in farts isn’t lethal. You’re not going to just puff up like big balloon then explode! 11. The average person farts roughly between 14 – 22 times a day. That’s 98 – 154 times a week, 392 – 616 times a month and 5,110 – 8,030 times a year! 12. It’s impossible to go through life without farting. Even if you were to hold them in all day every day, whilst you sleep your body’s natural functions will take over. 13. In 2014, 65 year old French artist and inventor Christian Poincheval created some pills from 100% natural ingredients that aid digestion and make your farts smell like roses or chocolate . Talk about coming up roses! 14. The scientific term for a fart, “flatulence”, is derived from the Latin “flatus”, which means “blowing” and “wind”.

WiFi Was Invented By Accident An Australian scientist by the name of John O’Sullivan was inspired by Stephen Hawking’s theory of evaporating black holes and their subsequent radio waves, and set out to find them and prove the theory correct. Whilst doing so, he found that these weak signals were hard to distinguish from the louder background radio noise of the entire universe. These signals had travelled such vast distances and were so small and distorted by the gas and dust of space they had passed through. This meant their waveform had altered from a sharp and easily identifiable spike, to a flattened curve. It was because of this that O’Sullivan and his researches contemporaries got to work on creating a tool that could identify and filter specific radio waves. After lots of hard work, O’Sullivan and a colleague were able to create a tool based off a mathematical formula which would help them find these waves, blocking out the extraneous radio signals to identify the useful ones. However, they were unsuccessful in finding a black hole’s radio waves. Fast forward to 1992, O’Sullivan was working for the CSIRO and was tasked with finding a way for computers to communicate without wires – a wireless system of some type. Remembering his previous research into black holes and the tools he’d created to identify the black hole radio waves wirelessly, O’Sullivan went back to the tool he’d previously made. Using the mathematical formula of this device he was able to modify and tweak it, using this as a basis for Wi-Fi to search out weak and fuzzy radio signals in the noisiest of environments. This re-purposed and unintentional invention earned the CSIRO roughly $1 billion in royalties and O’Sullivan patented it in his native country first in 1992, then later in the U.S. in 1996. So, thank you to Stephen Hawking for inspiring John O’Sullivan to accidentally give us all Wi-Fi!

No, this is nothing to do with the 2018 horror hit 'A Quiet Place' . Although if you, like me, were a fan of A Quiet Place, I’m sure there were times when you thought living a life full of peace and quiet wouldn’t actually be that bad. Well what if I was to tell you that there is an actual place quieter than A Quiet Place? And that it will drive you crazy rather than zen you out? At the Orfield Laboratories in Minnesota, there is an anechoic chamber that is the quietest place in the world. In fact, it is so quiet that nobody has been able to bear the sound, or rather the lack of, for longer than 45 minutes. Inside the Chamber. The room’s interior is so silent that its background noise has a negative decibel output at -9.4 dBA. To put that into perspective, the general background noise of an urbanized area like a city varies from 60 – 70 dBA, whereas in a rural countryside area the decibel output is typically 29 dBA. The lab’s founder, Steven Orfield said: “We challenge people to sit in the chamber in the dark – one person stayed in there for 45 minutes. When it’s quiet, ears will adapt. The quieter the room, the more things you hear. You’ll hear your heart beating; sometimes you can hear your lungs, hear your stomach gurgling loudly. In the anechoic chamber, you become the sound.” A Disorientating Experience. So for a normal person going into this room, the whole experience is very disorientating. People have trouble standing or sitting within the room, as well as navigating the room or maintaining their balance. The daunting lack of noise makes it near impossible to orient yourself as you walk in the anechoic chamber, as we human’s rely very heavily on subconscious audio cues to navigate when walking. As Steven Orfield said: “You take away the perceptual cues that allow you to balance and maneuver. If you’re in there for half an hour, you have to be in a chair.” Practical Uses. Other than driving people insane, this chamber is used by companies to test how loud their products are, as well as being used by NASA astronauts in training to help them adapt to the silence of space. So are you sure you still want that peace and quiet? Are you? Well I guess it turns out it might actually send you crazier than all that constant hustle and bustle !!!
