Literature / Today In Zaga- A Short Story by drsamba: 3:34pm On Mar 19, 2018
Today in zaga-a short story
My placenta is buried here, this is where I have lived from cradle till date-Zaga knows me as much as I know her.

People here live simple lives, the pathway from cradle to grave for most inhabitants is etched in stone, lack is a daily companion,it is bound to the air they take into their lungs like inseparable twins.

Mr Ama sits under the Neem tree in front of his house daily since retiring from civil service after thirty five years-it has become a daily ritual."Kai kai" he lets out a scream at a group of boys hunting lizards in the adjoining shack, only then does it become clear that he has just fixed new glass windows and doors on his  two room face-me-I-face-you house and must therefore keep watch to fend off thieves and rascals. For company, he has a transistor radio that has seen better days.In Zaga,he was considered fortunate and a man of means.

As I make my way to the secondary school where I have been volunteering as a physics teacher,I hear the familiar voice of Mr Ama;"Good morning Ibro",Morning sir I reply as I walk pass another group of bare footed boys playing football improvised from used polythene material on a sandy patch of earth, completely oblivious of the consequences of a life of perpetual intellectual gloom."Olamide,Olamide, pass the ball to me",they all chorus at the lanky brown haired boy with the ball.I look through the sea of dust that clothes the playground,I recognize the boy to be Ayuba, the seventh child of Bulus, the security man at our only secondary school. It has become the trend in Zaga that young lads take on the names and in some cases mannerisms of celebrities, everyone of them is doing it.They have  all substituted their names for those of celebrities so that at every corner of zaga you turned you hear names like Olamide,Phyno Phyno, Terry G,M.I and many more. They all want to be musicians and footballers.Society has turned value system on its head.Graduates such  as myself are stars performing to an imaginary audience in the current scheme of things. This is not how a sane society should be.If before, we were sitting on a keg of gun powder, now we are jumping on it.But who cares?.

As my 20 minute trek to work winds down,a lorry carrying furniture and kitchen utensils drives by,belching thick dark fumes that masks protesting tyres as the driver fires at breakneck speed oblivious of the toxic cocktail he serves our lungs.A wedding has just folded up.Men here hire and fire women at will,it is nothing.Firing and hiring refreshes the appetites of the loins of the malefolk here.It is normal.

As I walk into the school premises,I am reminded of the fact that Sevilla had just humiliated My favorite club the night before,my gloom deepens.

Literature / Randi, laroba And Nfor(4):armageddon Is Upon Gora..... by drsamba: 5:51pm On Feb 12, 2018
Randi,Laroba and Nfor(4):Armageddon is upon Gora.....

Today Laroba reflects on the story Jabi, the 80 Year old sage.Randi and Nfor are out playing football.

An uneasy calm hung over Gora like an ominous cloud, heavy with anguish and loss-everyone prayed for a rain bow.Gora had been a tranquil community that gave and supported life for eons-Gora was a mother, she gave life;was a common dictum amongst it's inhabitants. It was their pride. But now things had taken a turn for the worse very rapidly, occasioned by events in neighboring villages.

Jabi was now 80,his sunken eyes had seen the beauty;they'd seen the beast-in man.His brain that stored the images that his now Rheumy eyes had fed it its entire life was still keen;sometimes he wished he would develop selective amnesia,he wished he could forget the gory images of the civil war that still haunted him to this day and remember the lessons it taught him,but his brain kept these very fresh-it was his blessing and his curse. He'd lived in Gora for over 60 years now, which Unlike other villages, was a beacon of hope ,an embodiment of the true spirit of community even among individuals from diverse ethnic and religious background-in Gora, they were humans first before anything or anyone else.Gora mocked the wanton depravity that humans elsewhere were capable of.This gave him hope, hope in the much that can be achieved if society developes the deliberate, collective resolve to spread the message of love, peace, forgiveness and oneness.Gora was a Nirvana,The creator's proof to doubting mortals of the existence of paradise.

It was 7:00 pm, the sun lay tucked away In its bed behind the curtains of the night sky above Gora.It an was immaculate sight to behold but Jabi was restless, a solitary cold sweat ran from his forehead right down his massive belly as it moved up and down with each laboured breath he took, burying itself in his navel-This was not a good sign, that he coudn't help but feel that way, made it worse. He was troubled by what he'd overheard a group of youths discussing that evening as he took his routine stroll,he couldn't remember the details of their conversation but he was sure it had been about a growing rift and distrust amongst the indigenes of Gora, events in neighboring villages had spilled over into Gora splitting them along ethno-religious lines, this seemed to have been going on for sometime now because from what he could make of it,people that once stood as a unit now stood on different sides of a line that had been drawn between them,by who?they never seemed to care, now they were only waiting for the minutest provocation to swing into action. He was terrified to his aged marrow. They had never tasted from the bitter cup of loss, destitution and utter destruction that war brought, war tore suckling babies from their mothers' bosoms.what could be more savage ? He thought to himself. They seemed determined to write on their generation's canvas with the blood of their brothers, sisters, mothers ,fathers and children. He had only a few years left to breathe,he was more worried for them than for himself, violence it seemed had gone 'glocal',for it was only a matter of time until a child lay in a pool of its own blood in Gora's village square. What a shame,a big shame.

He was not going to let this madness come to fruition,he had to move swifly to call for a stakeholders meeting, the youth held him in high esteem and would listen to his voice of reason, yes, even if this would be the last thing he would do,he was willing to do it,it was a battle for the very soul of Gora and he was going to stop at nothing until he had educated fellow Gorans. He had prepared his speech and rehearsed it over and over in his head ready for the stakeholders' meeting the next morning when like a thief, sleep crawled up his gray beard and closed his tired eyes as if to say' well done old man you have worked hard enough already' he snored away as if in agreement into the now tense night air over Gora.

Boom boom boom, tatatataaaaa and loud screams of women and children startled Ema to his wobbly feet barely seeing anything in his immediate surroundings, a shadowy figure clutching what seemed like a bag lay in the distance,he couldn't make out what it was amidst the ensuing pandemonium, a burning hut in the distance casting its flamy light on the shadowy figure,he made out the figure to be that of a lifeless pregnant woman clutching her two year old little girl. His feet were wobbly, everything happened so fast sparing him no time to process everything .He couldn't run even when he tried to,'This is it',he heard voice in his head say. They got to his hut and his screams became more and more distant as the flames drowned his wisdom ladened voice.,Evil had brought death upon Jabi and many more like him-all good and Innocent people going about their pedestrian lives.Armageddon was upon Gora...

Literature / Randi, laroba And Nfor (3),the Beautiful Soul That They Killed…. by drsamba: 1:23am On Feb 07, 2018
Randi,Laroba And Nfor (3),The Beautiful Soul That They Killed….

Randi, your countenance contrasts with the amiable weather that we have today, tell me Randi, what is it that weighs you down so much my friend?

Ĺaroba, your observation lends credence to the saying that ‘ the face is the window to the heart ‘, I was in high spirits until I happened on the story of Arun. It has thrown my hitherto buoyant spirit into unprecedented despondency;one many hardly recover from.I may not be different I’m afraid.

I don’t like sad stories myself, lest I fall into a major depression but since this is a story about a real human being,my curiosity outweighs my inhibitions in the circumstance, let me hear the story please, after all a ‘sad story shared is a burden shared’ as they say.

Kai Laroba kenan, ‘a problem shared is a problem half solved’ is what I know o,

Sha the story goes that Arun was born into a family of four children in a deprived area of town, his parents passed on quite early in his life-he was four when this tragedy befell them.As is customary, the outpouring of grieve that accompanies such inevitable dark moments was no different, just this time it was a gathering of their fellow have-nots who had come to mourn the passing of one their own-seen as a somewhat merciful release by many.

Hours rolled into days and days into weeks, weeks into months,Arun’s parents death seemed to have connived with ill health to rob the eldest daughter (who was now 15 but looked thrice her age) of the vigour and vibrance girls her age enjoy in places where things work, this seemed too much for the poor girl as she succumbed,Arun heard someone say she had gone to join their parents, where?he didn’t exactly know.He was a child.

Everything Arun learnt,he did so on his own,he was a loner, never talked or smiled to anyone.People around knew something was different about the boy Arun and since they couldn’t figure it out,the voice that speaks in people’s heads swung into action, telling them things like;something sinister plus bad luck hung around him like a toga,he was a bad omen,he was everything ‘good people ‘ prayed against in their closets and by street corners. They wouldn’t touch Arun’s issue, not even with a ten metre pole.Boy,did this ever bother him?was he befuddled by this cold hand of friendship extended to him?was he overwhelmed by all these?if ever he was,he never let anyone know.Life had served him several dishes of loss and pain, all coming thick and fast at a time he was supposed to be growing. He was scarred. No one cared, not even one person,it had become a normal anomaly, at least in Arun’s haunted world.

Many years had gone by,Arun was now a young man,he had always left the slum he lived in every morning, returning very late every night to a thunderous hostile welcome of the barking Bingos in the neighbourhood. He came back at times of the day when couples only touched, speaking in subdued tones only occasionally. This activity was rampant in the slum, how did he now?the swelling numbers of malnourished children strewn about the nooks and crannies of the slum were a testament to this ‘adult football’ played only at nights in the dark. This worried Arun a great deal,he wanted to help the community. He wanted a different life for these children left at the mercy of the vicissitudes he was no stranger to.

Twenty one years had gone by since the death of Arun’s parents, and little had changed in the way of infrastructure in the slum he had always called home from birth,no one cared,an adherent of the karma ideology would have believed unshakably that they were being punished for the harsh way and manner in which they had treated Arun. However,Arun knew that nothing could be further from the truth, their collective despondency and deprivation was thrust upon them by their leaders. It had nothing to do with karma.

A new twenty bed maternity sprang up in Arun’s community, something they have never dreamt would happen,a motherless babies’ home was also being constructed at a feverish pace some few meters away from the maternity,a standard well was also being dug. This development was greeted with a frenzy and sent the slum’s rumour mill into over drive.some said it was done by the government, others said it was the white men, others said it was one big faith based organisation like that-no one knew for a fact.

A crowd gathered at the newly constructed maternity, their number swelled fast,a few angry voices could be heard screaming at the top of their lungs while majority of them with their hands across the chest spoke in hush hush tones.Someone had vandalized the new maternity that was set to be used in a short while, nothing was left.As they boiled with anger,a member of the youth shouted this question aloud-why do we stand here and act as if we do not who did this to us?As if controlled by a single brain, the mob matched towards Arun’s shack chanting olè,death to olè, death to olè.Someone broke the door and brought out a semi clad Arun,a tyre was placed around his neck and he was set alight and left to burn like a beast.

It was when a delegation from the government came to the community that it was disclosed that it was Arun that built all those structures.he had saved up money from his daily hustle for the last 18 years to help the community.

Now you know why I am sad,Laroba.

Jeez Randi,I am speechless, Arun was truly a beautiful soul that they killed. What a world?.

Randi,Nfor and Laŕoba;Too-much-talk-about-nothing........

Ehen, before I forget, have you heard the latest gist in town?

Yes Nfor, everyone hears everything that happens these days, all secrets are open now-a-days.

How can you say all secrets are open now -a-days?Laŕoba,you have started again abi?

Which one is I have started again? that I'm saying the truth as always has now become a crime abi?,as a matter of fact; someone said he heard that all walls have ears these days, and the fruits on that mango tree are actually eyes disguised as fruits and its leaves actually ears, all very sharp and sensitive as though they were in their prime.I wonder what extraterrestrial body they might be focused on,as we speak.

Aha! I said it,I'm not mad after all,the gods be praised indeed!

Who said you were mad?Randi

Laŕoba,I didn't believe what I saw the other day,I thought a knot was loosened in my upstairs,

Do you know that I caught a fruit on that mango tree, infact two fruits;all fully matured, blinking feverishly as if in a heated competition for a crown for who sees best,as if that was not dizzying enough, two elderly leaves on the same tree were flapping and repositioning themselves to listen in on this same latest news in town Nfor just asked you about.I could give the best psychedelic medication a run for its money-were it not true.

Randi, do I sense sarcasm or is my imagination running wild again?

Nfor, sarcasm or no sarcasm, I have made my point and contributed my quota on this too-much-talk-about-nothing.

I think I should keep everything I hear to myself next time, mtchewwwww, nonsense.

Nfor, someone I consider wise once said and I quote "the best advice you can ever get is the one you give yourself",so, I think you have done well to apply the brakes to the rumour machine.

OK,I have heard you,Solomon ne ko Randi ne,Nonsense..

Health / Cancers;what Are They? by drsamba: 12:57pm On Dec 26, 2017
Cancer cases are on the rise globally and the developing world to which we belong isn’t left out of this awful trend, this is due to,among other things to improvement in diagnostic methods, improved standards of living with increasing life expectancy (cancers are commoner in old age),immunosuppressive diseases like HIV/AIDS etc., it is,therefore, only proper that health care professionals such as myself educate members of the population in a simple to understand manner about what cancers are, hence this article.

The human body is made up of trillions of living building blocks called cells, these cells are programmed to grow, divide, age and die,to be replaced by new cells-this is the natural order of events in the human body.Sometimes however, this natural order becomes distorted leading to aberrations that lead to unwanted effects.

When a cell refuses to follow the natural order stated above and begins to divide uncontrollably, forming other ‘autonomous’ cells like itself with an ability to invade other surrounding tissues and even spread to distant tissues from its primary base-a cancer cell is born.

This means cancer can develop in almost every part of the body often referred to as cancer of that part of the body in pedestrian terms e.g cancer of the breast (when it occurs in the breast),cancer of the prostate, cancer of the colon, cervical cancer, liver cancer, etc.

Cancers, therefore, are a group of diseases that at their core is a problem with cell growth, division and death. They can generally be classified as solid tumours (form masses) e.g breast cancer and non-solid tumours e.g leukemia, several other classifications based on different criteria exist.

We accuse others most times because we are not opportune to do what we accuse them !

THERE is a man in KADUNA who has repeatedly accused Governor El Rufai’s Goverment of massive corruption through the Media Houses.

The young man named ‘JARFA’ was one day invited to the Government house by the Governor, who directed Mr. Jarfa to charter a ‘KEKE NAPEP’ that he (the Governor) will pay when he arrived and that he had already instructed the security details at the gate for his free passage…

Mr. Jarfa arrived as instructed and the Governor told him to let the KEKE man go and that his men will drop him later…

He gave Mr. Jarfa N200,000.00 to pay the KEKE man as a way of empowering the poor rider as well as to let the KEKE man always remember the very day he brought a passenger to the Government House….

The Governor asked Mr. Jarfa upon his return from paying the KEKE man, ”What was the reaction of the KEKE man after giving him such a huge amount?
Mr. Jarfa answered that the KEKE man was actually ......

Source: http://9jawow.com.ng/2017/11/30/my-ex-boyfriend-has-my-naked-pics-and-threatens-to-release-them-to-the-public-unless-i-end-my-engagement/

Good evening sir,I came across a story by one of your blog visitors who was confused as to which of her two lovers should she settle with by chance on nairaland and since then has been battling two contrasting and contesting thoughts as to whether or not I share my deeply troubling dilemma, if not for anything but to lift the heavy weight off my chest-if at all it could be lifted.

it is 10:00 pm as I sit here totally confused as to the next step to take as every thing I have have worked and dreamed of risks going down the drain before my very eyes. How do I begin, where do I start from?

I am the definition of from grass to grace (at least by my own modest standard), coming from a large polygamous home where every wife had to politik(dunno if there is any word as that but since this a democratic regime,I guess I’m at liberty to introduce a word or two into the lexicon ) for both resources and attention from our father for her self and her children; both of which were scarce, very scarce.Being the first of my mother’s all three daughters,I noticed very early in life the need to try harder as a girl child in a patriarchal and conservative North-western society. We ate to survive and not the other way round-consistent with the hundreds of other families within our socio-economic class. It was easier to count the number of times one ate in a week than the number of times one went on empty (middle-belt),lol;this abnormality became normal and we took it to be the Almighty’s will.
I started school at 7 years of age,but before long,it became clear that I was a bright kid, first to my teachers, then to my mother and neighbours. It came naturally to me.I have never been second in class to anyone throughout primary and secondary school, this protected me from the fate that befell many young girls my age and younger (my siblings inclusive)-Early marriage or teenage pregnancy.looking back now,I think the Young men around thought me too smart and too bookish to be kept at home or impregnate,so I was spared the scourge of early marriage and escaped teenage pregnancy;even though this seems a rosy prospect now as I ponder on the mess I’m in.With the challenges I faced like having no uniform at all or using a torn one when providence smiled on me (it rarely did),hardened by several layers of patchings and several school hours lost as a result of being sent home for not paying school fees. I would look at my frail father with righteous indignation, blaming him for plunging us into this vicious cycle of poverty yet feeling sorry for him at the same time for I saw him as a prisoner of lack.

I hawked from primary six to ss3 after school everyday and my mother saved everything I got-she foresaw that I was going to need the money for the futherance of my studies.By 23 years I was a graduate of english, after a hell of financial hassles, with excellent results, but I have never thought too much of myself maybe because of my humble background, I therefore saw my achievement as being just ‘there’.I have a very low self esteem and confidence, I’ve always been like that.Because I didn’t dress well, and couldnt afford the nice smelling fragrances,I kept to myself-alot.
I got a job with cyber cafe in Kaduna after graduating where I met ××××××××××××,he was the owner of cafè and I noticed he took special interest in me and always paid me above our agreed wages,I started having money to spare even after meeting my basic needs,I could afford provisions and a good perfume and lotions, with some nice change of clothes. I woulld go to work on a commercial motor bike and return with my boss in his car-nothing was at this point going on,he gave me an impression that his good acts towards me were completely altruistic-I fell for his charm helplessly. He made me happy and helped build my self confidence and esteem,I was as happy as a child in an Alewa (candy) store.

Good morning sir,I saw somewhere on Facebook where you said you want to make your site an interactive one,and right now I find myself at a very confusing point in my life.

Kindly hide my name and the part of the country I come from to avoid any of the parties involved from finding me out and making me lose everything.

My story:

My name is xxxxxxxxxxxxx,I’m a 32 year old lady from ××××××××Bleep,I will for the sake of anonymity, refer to the two guys as Mr A and Mr B.I have known Mr A for nearly 13 years now (shortly after my secondary school ),even though we were just friends initially till my 23rd birthday when we made things official,Mr A is three years older than I am,a very hard working and focused man,God fearing(but we have gbenshed severally before as brother no be wood.(judjinas hold your peace abeg)…,a graduate, underemployed but a hustler through and through. He is a man I wouldn’t mind ending up with but he is not financially stable to go through with the demands of settling down and raising a family and has always made a point of that. When I turned thirty two years ago,the pressure to marry was mounting on me to get serious with my life and settle down-(as if I can marry myself) but somehow the pressure made me to begin considering a plan B and that is where Mr B comes into the picture.I met him at a motor park when I was travelling home for Christmas two decembers ago,I caught him looking at my back side (I gather no be small) but he quickly shifted his gaze pretending as though he’d been looking elsewhere all the while.I think he became a prisoner of his conscience shortly afterwards because he eventually walked up to me to apologise a short while later and I discovered how charming a man he was.He made for his ...............

This was sent to me from a blog visitor to share with you all;read and learn.

Good morning sir,I want to thank you for this wonderful platform you have,I stumbled on your site exactly three weeks today while searching for a particular health information and since then has remained a very regular visitor.

Please kindly hide my identity but share every bit of my story to your blog visitors so that no one falls victim again. My story goes thus:

I am a 28 year old graduate of a south eastern university in Nigeria, where I studied international relations(2nd class upper),served in the north and moved to Lagos on completion of NYSC to stay with my maternal aunt and her family while I hustled for a job.

Now to my story proper. I come from a family of three, two girls and a boy(last born),I happen to be the first of the three. On moving to lagos,my auntie and her family were really nice to me and very supportive in the two years I was looking for a job.I was fortunate to get a job with a new generation bank after two years of hunting, with a good pay and saved up for one year until I was comfortable enough to move to my own place (which was closer to my place of work).By this time,my younger sister had also graduated and was unemployed, my mother called one morning to ask me to allow my sister to come stay with me while she looked for something to do,I agreed (this was my first mistake).A week later, she arrived………………………………..Bright (name changed) was a guy I met in the first month I arrived in lagos, he had been on my case for the next six months but I was not convinced because he was a smooth talker and possessed dashing looks,in my mind I kept telling myself that it was too good to be true,so I set up defences to tire him out,but for where, the guy seemed to have made me his Lagos project,on the 26th of June 2014,my defences came crumbling as he came talking about wanting to settle down (another mistake ),there is no harm in trying I told myself. He was comfortable, with a car, lived in a two bedroom flat that was tastefully furnished,he was ,he was always at home anytime he was not visiting me,when I asked what he did for a living,”I am an online scout for teams in Europe ,”he’d retort.I didn’t know much about football or football business other than the fact that there is money in the sport.I believed him and didn’t dig any further (another mistake).we were a regular couple with our regular quarrels like any other couple, his ‘job’ kept him busy or so I thought. He gave me the support and stability that made me flourish at work and glow to everyone’s admiration (I was a happy girl) until……………………………………Onyiye (real name),my evil sister ,came into the picture and turned everything I cherished on its head.when Onyiye came over to lagos, she made initial efforts at securing a job,but after a while I noticed she’d throw up one excuse or the other to stay in bed all day (I guess I gave her a lot of comfort ) and watch zee world and telemundo all nigh.I was too busy at work to notice and complain.I worked from Monday to Saturday and Sundays occasionally. There was this Sunday we were supposed to hang out with Bright and he came up with a lame excuse ,I decided to sleep the whole day to be rejuvenated for the next day’s engagements at work.I wokè up by 12:00 am to find out that Onyiye was not in her room as well, she was not picking her phone either.I called my mum to ask if Onyiye had spoken to them, they said no,she hadn’t. I called Bright and he said I shouldn’t be too worried, after all she is a big girl and will come home ,so I heeded his advice and slept..................more at http://9jawow.com.ng/2017/11/26/he-left-me-for-my-sisterim-so-broken/

Health / Window Period In HIV by drsamba: 5:00am On Nov 25, 2017
Source:http://9jawow.com.ng/2017/11/25/window-period-in-hiv/

By Dr. Randolph Samba

You must have heard the phrase window period by now if you live in sub- Sahara Africa or elsewhere in the so-called third world where HIV prevalence is high and new cases (incidence) is also rising due to inadequate sensitization and risky behaviour among members of the population.

This article shall seek to,among other things, shine the light on the commonly used phrase-window period,in order to help you make informed choices about your health as it relates to HIV & AIDS.

WHAT IS WINDOW PERIOD?

It is the period (time, duration) within which markers (antigens, antibodies) of infection are undetectable yet. It is the time between infection (getting the virus) and seroconversion (when antibodies become detectable in blood). Therefore, an HIV test done during the window period is not reliable as it may give a false negative result. It is for this reason that your health care provider will tell you to return after 12 weeks (3 months) for a repeat test.
The tests most commonly available in resource constrained environment such as ours rely on antibodies (weapons) produced by our immune cells (soldiers) against the HIV bug (enemy ).Usually this takes at least 6-12 weeks to be produced in sufficient amounts for .......more at http://9jawow.com.ng/2017/11/25/window-period-in-hiv/

Health / Man Goes BLIND In One Eye After Powerful Orgasm.see What Doctors Have To Say. by drsamba: 5:02pm On Nov 23, 2017
Source: http://9jawow.com.ng/2017/11/23/man-goes-blind-in-one-eye-after-powerful-orgasm-see-what-doctors-have-to-say/

A man had to go to hospital after becoming blind in one eye when he orgasmed too hard during sex, research has revealed. According to a paper in the British Medical Journal the ‘29-year-old man presented to the emergency eye clinic reporting an obstruction in the central vision of his left eye, which he had noticed on waking that morning’.
Doctors guessed that the man performed a Valsalva maneuveur, in other words the tensing of abdominal muscles, straining and holding your breath, in which air is forced against a closed windpipe and pressure increases in the chest.
This pressure resulted in the popping of blood vessel in the eye of the unfortunate man after an episode of ‘vigorous sexual intercourse’, doctors concluded after speaking to him....... more @ http://9jawow.com.ng/2017/11/23/man-goes-blind-in-one-eye-after-powerful-orgasm-see-what-doctors-have-to-say/
