Health / 11 Sure Tips To Beat Weight Gain This Christmas by DTruSon(m): 2:05pm On Dec 17, 2016
Even for people who have got a good rein on their cravings, the festive season is somewhat challenging for everyone in terms of weight gain. Keeping your eating habits on track can be a daunting task, making you dive all the way into a mire of self-indulgence, and putting a pause on your diet routine until the New Year.

But you should realise the excess kilos you acquire wouldn’t disappear like the Christmas trees as the new year is ushered in, and you really don’t want to be starting the new year with excess luggage in terms of weight gain.

In reality you can still have great fun without ditching your healthy lifestyle habits.

Here are 10 rules you can follow to ensure you having fun and still wake up on New Years Day weighing the same kilos.

Keep Weighing Scale Close

Ensure you weigh yourself daily. This not only help you keep a tab on your weight, but ensure you have some discretion while having fun with Christmas dishes . The way to go is to step on the scale first thing in the morning when your stomach is empty.

Quick Workout in the morning

Having a quick 30 to 45 minutes exercise first thing in the morning helps to keep the body in shape. It also helps you maintain a good eating habit all day long.

Using brain scans, researchers found that when women worked out in the morning, they not only moved more the rest of the day, but they also responded less to pictures of tempting food compared with the days they didn’t do a morning workout. This translated to fewer cravings for high-fat foods.

Be ready to look away

Be ready to use discretion while filling your plate from the buffet. Cultivate a habit of looking away from the high fat chickens and beefs. If, for example, you could leave sushi for sliders, don’t start with the fish rolls hoping to be able to resist the burger later.

“If you pick the stuff you really want and have it in moderation, you’ll stave off those cravings that can get you in trouble later on.”

Avoid calories

Sometimes you want to cut back on high calorie foods just so you can indulge in a binge at an evening party. This is not a good way to go, as it only sets you up for big pig-out.

Just ensure to eat your three squares meals with a couple of snacks. Aim for lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Cut back on diet soda

It is true that diet soda contains next to zero calories, but any bubbly beverage can lead to bloated tummy. The gas inside in the bubbles of fizzy drinks will lead to a build up of air in the tummy.

Eat up the water

It is a known fact that you should take at least 8 glasses of water daily, which is nearly always impossible with the bustling life of the festive season. But you can augment your daily water requirements by eating fruits and vegetables. Green salad with drizzles of vinaigrette is great for this. Servings of apple, avocado and pear can give you ample measures of water to add to what you get from glasses you’ve managed to drink.

Have regular cups of peppermint tea

Research shows peppermint can help calm stomach muscles and reduce gas. The tea also serve as natural diuretic by making you pee more and helping to keep your weight in check.

Eat more slowly

With the never-ending schedules of Christmas season, it is hard to reduce the frequency of having to munch one thing or the other. But eating fast is a sure recipe for weight gain. But when you eat more slowly, you take in more air into the stomach which tend to hasten satiety. The bottom-line is that you end up eating less.

Fruits, fruits and more fruits

Fresh fruits are very rich source of potassium. When you ramp up your fruits consumption, you infuse your system with ample supplies of potassium. This mineral counteracts the effect of sodium. Sodium naturally makes the body retain more water and leads to net weight gain. More potassium means less water retention. Few servings of kiwis, avocados, bananas and strawberries continually will get you going.

Stay calm and put a leash on the cravings

Sometimes you get overwhelmed with the sight of unending varieties constantly staring you in the face. This is the time to take deep breaths and take few steps back. Stress reduction techniques help put some reins on your cravings and you will be able to prevent weight gain.

Stressed by the sight of that holiday spread? Take deep breaths before you grab a plate. Research suggests that women who practice stress reduction techniques are able to prevent weight gain. Pause for about 20 seconds with eyes closed and rethink whether its really worth it to fill your plate with another round. The chances are great that you will look away.

You don’t have to cut of desserts completely

You could still manage to keep up with the desserts. but you can hold on the three-bite rule. Just take a bite out of it and you are done. This habit helps to keep your sweet tooth in check. You’ll still manage to get that amazing first taste, a satisfying middle one, and then a lingering third bite.

Health / Living Near Busy Roads With Heavy Traffic Raises Blood Pressure by DTruSon(m): 2:26pm On Dec 07, 2016
Living near busy roads or spending Long hours in traffic raises blood pressure, says new research

Plying highways riddled with heavy traffic has become normal part of city life. Shuttling to and from work everyday makes you spend significant part of your day in traffic. New research is showing that the hassles and headaches of traffic lock down is likely to be the least of your worries, as it actually increases your risk of high blood pressure and heightens the odds of you developing a heart attack or stroke. Heavy traffic raises blood pressure.
The risk of hypertension is significantly increased by spending long time in or living near busy roads, researchers have found.

Traffic fumes and noise both increase chances of what doctors call hypertension – which in turn raises the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

The largest ever study into the impact of air and noise pollution found those in the most polluted areas were more than a fifth more likely to get high blood pressure.

Researchers in five countries tracked 41,000 people for nine years, finding that the extra risk of daily exposure to pollution for a healthy slim person was equivalent to being overweight.

The study, conducted in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Spain, involved people who did not have high blood pressure when they joined the programme.
After nine years those exposed to the highest air pollution were 22 % more likely to have developed high blood pressure than those who lived in the areas of lowest air pollution.
And those in the noisiest streets – with an average night-time noise of 50 decibels – were 6 per cent more likely to develop the condition than those in the quietest, which were 40 decibels at night.

Lead author Professor Barbara Hoffmann, of Heinrich Heine University in Dusseldorf, Germany, said: ‘These results have important public health consequences and call for more stringent air-quality regulations.’

This makes it safe to assume that the snarls of traffic raised blood pressure and constitute major health hazards.

With such findings as this, it’s not far fetched to assume that the serene breezy life of the country side is one of the sure ways to enjoy hassle free life and good health. While the reality of highways riddled with traffic has come to stay with us, it is imperative to ensure you get ample time to take a break off the bustles of this conundrum.

Health / 7 Fatty Foods That Can Help You Lose Weight by DTruSon(m): 2:59pm On Oct 27, 2016
The widely accepted school of thought has always been that dietary fat make you physically fat and unhealthy, but that is changing. The only kind of fat that’s definitively bad for you is trans-fat, according to dietitians. Other kinds of fat can be beneficial for your health and as you may find hard to believe, even help you lose weight.

The fact is some fatty foods help in increasing the body’s metabolic rate and hence, aid in weight loss. But of course, you can’t just add healthy fats to a junk diet and expect to lose weight. The bottom-line is the overall composition of your diet.

Research also shows that eating a wide variety of nutritious foods, including fats, have filling effect on the stomach, hence helps create early satiety and prevent overeating. That will also result in weight loss.

In your effort to control your weight, you can overcome the fear of fat and make use of these fat-rich foods we listed below to get your ideal weight:

1.Coconut oil

Research has shown that simply taking coconut oil can increase your energy metabolism and burn up to 120 extra calories per day. If your goal is reduce your daily caloric intake, you’re better off cooking with coconut oil than an outright cutting out of fats altogether.

2. Nuts

In terms of constituents, nuts are dense in calories. 20 nuts contain about 180 calories. However, scientists believe eating nuts increase the amount of calories you burn at rest and fill your tummy for longer hours that you end up eating fewer calories over all. It’s also been found that the body can’t digest some of the fat calories found in certain nuts like almonds. And when food calories exit the body intact, they’re excluded from the your total daily calorie consumption.

3.Wild salmon

Wild salmon has 32% less calories than the farmed type. It also has higher amount of calcium, Zinc, Potassium, Iron and less Sodium than the farmed salmon. Packed full of omega-3 fats which is just about the best kind of fat you can get.

4. Avocado

Avocado contains a healthy mix of plant fats, fibre, vitamins and is often used in place of conventional butter. Its caloric value is considerably minimal and this has made dietitians are rightfully obsessed with. Research even shows that overweight people who eat half an avocado at lunch feel greater satisfaction up to five hours later.

5. Grass-fed butter

Grass-fed butters are the butters made from grass-fed cows. Popularly called ghee, it contains more omega-3 fats than the conventional type. This is the advantage considering that omega-3s appears to speed up weight loss in conjunction with a reduced calorie diet. It may not be very significant, but in a weight loss program, every little bit counts!

6. Egg yolks

Contrary to popular belief, eggs does not raise LDL (bad) cholesterol or trigger heart disease, according to recent research that compared the effects of low- and high-egg diets. Eggs and the yolks actually promote satiety and reduce overeating.

7. Full-fat cheese

Cheese has often been tagged with containing high amount of fat and calories, however, new studies have suggests that full-fat, milk-based products are quite healthy. Some studies even show that people who cut back on calories while increasing their intake of full-fat dairy lose weight more quickly than people who only cut back on calories. And again, further scientific reviews of existing research suggest that people who include high-fat dairy foods in their diets are less likely to be overweight and obese.

It has also been found that people who eat upward of five servings a week have less body fat, lower BMIs, and lower blood pressure than people who steer clear of dairy altogether. Although more research is needed to understand exactly why, some theories suggest that dairy’s protein boosts satiety and its calcium binds to fatty acids to reduce fat absorption.

Health / US NIH, To Lift Ban On Funding Of Research On Hybrid Human-animal Embryos. by DTruSon(m): 4:01pm On Aug 11, 2016
The United States government announced plans Thursday, 11th August, 2016 to lift a moratorium on funding of certain controversial experiments that use human stem cells to create animal embryos that are partly human.

The National Institutes of Health is proposing a new policy to permit scientists to get federal money to make embryos, known as chimeras, under certain carefully monitored conditions.

The NIH imposed a moratorium on funding these experiments in September because they could raise ethical concerns.

One issue is that scientists might inadvertently create animals that have partly human brains, endowing them with some semblance of human consciousness or human thinking abilities. Another is that they could develop into animals with human sperm and eggs and breed, producing human embryos or fetuses inside animals or hybrid creatures.

But scientists have argued that they could take steps to prevent those outcomes and that the embryos provide invaluable tools for medical research.

For example, scientists hope to use the embryos to create animal models of human diseases, which could lead to new ways to prevent and treat illnesses. Researchers also hope to produce sheep, pigs and cows with human hearts, kidneys, livers, pancreases and possibly other organs that could be used for transplants.

To address the ethical concerns, the NIH's new policy imposes several restrictions.

The policy proposes prohibiting the introduction of certain types of human cells into embryos of nonhuman primates, such as monkeys and chimps, at even earlier stages of development than what was currently prohibited.

The extra protections are being added because these animals are so closely related to humans.

But the policy would lift the moratorium on funding experiments involving other species. Because of the ethical concerns, though, at least some of the experiments would go through an extra layer of review by a new, special committee of government officials.

That committee would, for example, consider experiments designed to create animals with human brain cells or human brain tissue. Scientists might want to create them to study neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. But the experiments would undergo intensive scrutiny if there's any chance there might be a "substantial contribution" or "substantial functional modification" to an animal's brain.

In addition, the NIH would even consider experiments that could create animals with human sperm and human eggs since they may be useful for studying human development and infertility. But in that case steps would have to be taken to prevent the animals from breeding.

"I am confident that these proposed changes will enable the NIH research community to move this promising area of science forward in a responsible manner," Carrie Wolinetz, the NIH's associate director for science policy, wrote in a blog post.

"At the end of the day, we want to make sure this research progresses because its very important to our understanding of disease. It's important to our mission to improve human health," she said in an interview with NPR. "But we also want to make sure there's an extra set of eyes on these projects because they do have this ethical set of concerns associated with them."

Several scientists said they are thrilled by the new policy. "It's very, very welcome news that NIH will consider funding this type of research," says Pablo Ross, a developmental biologist at the University of California, Davis, trying to grow human organs in farm animals. "We need funding to be able to answer some very important questions."

But critics denounced the decision. "Science fiction writers might have imagined worlds like this — like The Island of Dr. Moreau, Brave New World, Frankenstein," says Stuart Newman, a biologist at New York Medical College. "There have been speculations. But now they're becoming more real. And I think that we just can't say that since it's possible then let's do it."

The public however, has 30 days to comment on the proposed new policy. NIH could start funding projects as early as the start of 2017.

For the Sake of environmental pollution I support the cutting down of CO2 emission. But the sale of scare mongering that has gone on with respect to global warming from green house gases can't be underestimated.

I even came across a research report in another journal that claims the effects of these so called green house gases has helped delay another ice age by a hundred years.

Certainly, many multinational companies whose franchise are tied to eco friendly products wont like this kind of report.
Science/Technology / New Evidences Debunk Nasa's Earlier Global Warming Claims. by DTruSon(m): 2:42pm On Jan 17, 2016
Practically everything you have been told by the mainstream scientific community and the media about the alleged detriments of greenhouse gases, and particularly carbon dioxide, appears to be false, according to new data compiled by NASA's Langley Research Center. As it turns out, all those atmospheric greenhouse gases that Al Gore and all the other global warming hoaxers have long claimed are overheating and destroying our planet are actually cooling it, based on the latest evidence.

As reported by Principia Scientific International (PSI), Martin Mlynczak and his colleagues over at NASA tracked infrared emissions from the earth's upper atmosphere during and following a recent solar storm that took place between March 8-10. What they found was that the vast majority of energy released from the sun during this immense coronal mass ejection (CME) was reflected back up into space rather than deposited into earth's lower atmosphere.

The result was an overall cooling effect that completely contradicts claims made by NASA's own climatology division that greenhouse gases are a cause of global warming. As illustrated by data collected using Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER), both carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), which are abundant in the earth's upper atmosphere, greenhouse gases reflect heating energy rather than absorb it.

"Carbon dioxide and nitric oxide are natural thermostats," says James Russell from Hampton University, who was one of the lead investigators for the groundbreaking SABER study. "When the upper atmosphere (or 'thermosphere') heats up, these molecules try as hard as they can to shed that heat back into space."

Almost all 'heating' radiation generated by sun is blocked from entering lower atmosphere by CO2According to the data, up to 95 percent of solar radiation is literally bounced back into space by both CO2 and NO in the upper atmosphere. Without these necessary elements, in other words, the earth would be capable of absorbing potentially devastating amounts of solar energy that would truly melt the polar ice caps and destroy the planet.

"The shock revelation starkly contradicts the core proposition of the so-called greenhouse gas theory which claims that more CO2 means more warming for our planet," write H. Schreuder and J. O'Sullivan for PSI. "[T]his compelling new NASA data disproves that notion and is a huge embarrassment for NASA's chief climatologist, Dr. James Hansen and his team over at NASA's GISS

Its a pity!
Health / Cure For Sickle Cell Disease In Adults Recieves Medical Validation. by DTruSon(m): 3:59am On Sep 18, 2015
Physicians at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System have cured 12 adult patients of sickle cell disease using a unique procedure for stem cell transplantation from healthy, tissue-matched siblings.

The transplants were the first to be performed outside of the National Institutes of Health campus in Maryland, where the procedure was developed. Physicians there have treated 30 patients, with an 87 per cent success rate. The results of the phase I/II clinical trial at UI Health, in which 92 per cent of treated patients were cured, are published online in the journalBiology of Blood & Marrow Transplantation.

The new technique eliminates the need for chemotherapy to prepare the patient to receive the transplanted cells and offers the prospect of cure for tens of thousands of adults suffering from sickle cell disease.

About 90 per cent of the approximately 450 patients who have received stem cell transplants for sickle cell disease have been children. Chemotherapy has been considered too risky for adult patients, who are often more weakened than children by the disease.

“Adults with sickle cell disease are now living on average until about age 50 with blood transfusions and drugs to help with pain crises, but their quality of life can be very low,” says Dr. Damiano Rondelli, chief of hematology/oncology and director of the blood and marrow transplant program at UI Health, and corresponding author on the paper.

“Now, with this chemotherapy-free transplant, we are curing adults with sickle cell disease, and we see that their quality of life improves vastly within just one month of the transplant,” said Rondelli, who is also the Michael Reese Professor of Hematology in the UIC College of Medicine. “They are able to go back to school, go back to work, and can experience life without pain.”

Sickle cell disease is inherited. It primarily affects people of African descent, including about one in every 500 African Americans born in the U.S. The defect causes the oxygen-carrying red blood cells to be crescent shaped, like a sickle. The misshapen cells deliver less oxygen to the body’s tissues, causing severe pain and eventually stroke or organ damage.

Doctors have known for some time that bone marrow transplantation from a healthy donor can cure sickle cell disease. But few adults were transplanted because high-dose chemotherapy was needed to kill off the patients’ own blood-forming cells — and their entire immune system, to prevent rejection of the transplanted cells, leaving patients open to infection.

In the new procedure, patients receive immunosuppressive drugs just before the transplant, along with a very low dose of total body irradiation — a treatment much less harsh and with fewer potentially serious side effects than chemotherapy.

Next, donor cells from a healthy and tissue-matched sibling are transfused into the patient. Stem cells from the donor produce healthy new blood cells in the patient, eventually in sufficient quantity to eliminate symptoms. In many cases, sickle cells can no longer be detected. Patients must continue to take immunosuppressant drugs for at least a year.

In the reported trial, the researchers transplanted 13 patients, 17 to 40 years of age, with a stem cell preparation from the blood of a tissue-matched sibling. Healthy sibling donor-candidates and patients were tested for human leukocyte antigen, a set of markers found on cells in the body. Ten of these HLA markers must match between the donor and the recipient for the transplant to have the best chance of evading rejection.

In a further advance of the NIH procedure, physicians at UI Health successfully transplanted two patients with cells from siblings who matched for HLA but had a different blood type.

In all 13 patients, the transplanted cells successfully took up residence in the marrow and produced healthy red blood cells. One patient who failed to follow the post-transplant therapy regimen reverted to the original sickle cell condition.

Health / Sugary Drinks Linked To Early Menstruation. by DTruSon(m): 12:54pm On Jan 29, 2015
A new study has found that taking sugary drinks is associated with lowered age of menarche, which is the first period in the female menstrual cycle.

Age of first menses has been observed to have decreased substantially since the early 20th century. And previous studies have shown that younger age of menarche is associated with increased risk of breast and endometrial cancer in later life.

The current study, published online in Human Reproduction, used analyzed data from 5,583 girls ages 9 to 14 who had not yet attained menarche at the start. They were made to fill out diet questionnaires yearly from 1996 to 1998. By 2001, 159 still had not yet had their first period.

After controlling for birth weight, maternal age at menarche, physical activity, and many dietary and behavioral factors, it was discovered that girls who drank one-and-a-half (approximately 300g) a day of non-diet soda or sugared iced tea had their first period an average of 2.7 months earlier than those who drank less than two cans a week.

The lead author, Karin B. Michels, an associate professor of epidemiology at Harvard, said that the contribution of sugary drinks to early menarche was independent of the well-known contribution of obesity.

“Our findings are robust,” she said, “and not dependent on body mass index. Sugared beverages are not healthy to begin with, and there should be heightened attention to avoiding them.”

Education / China Catches 2,440 Students In High-tech Exam Cheating Scam by DTruSon(m): 12:32pm On Oct 28, 2014
About 2,440 Chinese students taking a national exam have been caught using high-tech cheating devices.

According to state media, invigilators detected some abnormal radio signals that were being used to transmit the answers in code to candidates, who wore wireless ear pieces or placed "electronic erasers" on their desks.

More than 25,000 students took the exam to become licensed pharmacists in the northwestern city of Xian on October 18 and 19. The test took place in seven separate locations.

The organizers of the scam sent fake candidates to take the test, who quickly left after memorizing the questions. They then broadcast the correct answers to candidates, who had paid $330 for the service.

Jiang Xueqin, a Beijing-based education consultant, said that China's high-stakes, exam-focused educational system had led to a culture of cheating.

"Most cases are not as flagrant or as stark as this but cheating is widespread because the focus is on getting the certification, not the skills you need in the work place."

Test centers for China's notoriously competitive university entrance exam use metal detectors to clamp down on cheating devices, with security often tighter than at airports, he added.

Nor do parents always frown upon such scams. In 2012, when authorities tried to stop cheats in the city of Zhongxiang in Hubei, a riot broke out involving parents angry that their children were being singled out when everyone was cheating.

Those caught cheating in the national licensing exam would not be allowed to take the exam again for two years, said Du Fangshuai, head of the provincial examination department.
