HealthEBOLA: Discoveries On The Cured American Aid Workers. by DTruSon(op): 10:01am On Sep 02, 2014
Medical Director of Specialized Infectious Disease unit at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Dr.Bruce Ribner has stated that, in general, patients who have recovered from Ebola virus infection have developed a very robust immunity to the virus.

Ribner who led the team that cared for the two American aid workers, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, who were released after being pronounced “recovered” from Ebola contracted Ebola while working in west Africa, told Scientific American that Ebola survivors develop antibodies against the virus and they also develop cell-mediated immunity.
“In general, the finding is it’s basically like being immunized. it would be unusual to get infection with the same strain. We are still evaluating that in our two patients.

Cross-protection is not quite as robust. There are five strains of Ebola viruses. Even though that data is not great, the feeling is there is potential for being infected if you go to a different part of Africa and get exposed to a different strain.
Ribner said the two survivors would be followed as outpatients, and as part of evaluation. “They have agreed to undergo additional testing so we can better understand immunity to Ebola virus. We are meeting with them periodically.

“What we found in general is that among our Ebola patients, because of the amount of fluid they lost through diarrhea and vomiting, they had a lot of electrolyte abnormalities. And so replacing that with standard fluids without monitoring will not do a very good job of replacing things like sodium and potassium. In both of our patients we found those levels to be very low.

“One of the messages we will be sending back to our colleagues is even if you don’t have the equipment to measure these levels, do be aware this is occurring when patients are having a lot of body fluid loss.” Immunity: “We are still evaluating that in our two patients. Cross-protection is not quite as robust. There are five strains of Ebola viruses. Even though that data is not great, the feeling is there is potential for being infected if you go to a different part of Africa and get exposed to a different strain.

“We are going to be following those two patients as outpatients, and as part of our evaluation they have agreed to undergo additional testing so we can better understand immunity to Ebola virus. We are meeting with them periodically.

Lessons
“We are not being critical of our colleagues in West Africa. They suffer from a terrible lack of infrastructure and the sort of testing that everyone in our society takes for granted, such as the ability to do a complete blood count—measuring your red blood cells, your white blood cells and your platelets—which is done as part of any standard checkup here.
“The facility in Liberia where our two patients were didn’t even have this simple thing, which everyone assumes is done as part of your annual physical.

“Our two patients also gained an enormous amount of fluid in their tissues, what we call edema. In Ebola virus disease there is damage to the liver and the liver no longer makes sufficient amount of protein; the proteins in the blood are very low and there is an enormous amount of fluid leakage out into the tissues. So one of the takeaway messages is to pay closer attention to that and perhaps early on try to replace some of these proteins that patients’ livers lack.

Evaluation: Looking at Ebola survivors who were discharged and successfully resolved the infection, following up several months later and evaluating their family members, there has never been any evidence that family members became infected. A lot of the thinking now is this probably was not live and is not important in terms of control of infection. We did give both of our patients the standard recommendations, which are contained on the CDC [U.S. Centers for Disease Control] Web site—not having unprotected sex for three months. Among the handful of patients that received the experimental drug ZMapp, some have died. Considering the mortality rate for the current Ebola strain is almost 50 percent what can we say about ZMapp?

Experimental drugs: Experimental drugs are experimental drugs because we don’t know if they will work. That is true both with the preparations patients received in Liberia and other preparations that are being considered for treating patients with this infectious disease. We are a long way from being able to say that someone that received one of these agents benefited, it had no impact or it may be that their outcome may be impeded. Until we have good studies looking at outcomes of patients who received these medications, compared to patients who didn’t receive them, we should be very cautious.

Hysteria: I would go further to say that there is a fair amount of almost hysteria and people feeling they must have these preparations to survive. In the past people thought they needed agents for treatment, and the agents actually turned out to impair people’s ability to survive. The focus should remain on aggressive intensive care and the ability to correct abnormalities metabolically, rather than receiving any magic vaccine or product that may or may not improve survival.

HealthWhy Girls Become Women Prematurely by DTruSon(op): 4:10pm On May 08, 2013
Puberty is an inevitable result of a child’s development, and it is a landmark that heralds the transition from childhood to adolescence. Scientists say these biological changes start when the pituitary gland in the brain triggers the production of sex hormones, with virtually predictable pattern.

Physicians note that puberty usually begins for girls before boys. For most girls, they say, puberty begins around age 11, while for boys, it starts from between age10 and 14. The average age for both sexes, they say, is 12.

But then, why are girls reaching puberty earlier these days?

Experts have the answers. Researchers suggest that exposure to chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls and phthalates could lead to hormone disruption. PCBs were once used as coolants and flame retardants; while phthalates are added to plastic products to make them more flexible.

One study that followed 600 pregnant women and their children found that girls who were exposed to high levels of PCBs in the womb attained puberty sooner than girls who didn’t have such exposure.

Experts also say being fed soy formula as babies can speed puberty in girls. They say this is because soy contains natural plant compounds called isoflavones, which can act like oestrogen in the body. Oestrogen controls female sexual development, promotes the growth of female secondary sexual characteristics at puberty, stimulates egg (ovum) production, and prepares the lining of the uterus for pregnancy.

Another reason which researchers adduce for early puberty is obesity. An expert in early puberty at the Medical Research Council, Prof. Richard Sharpe, relates that when a child’s fat tissue level reaches a certain point, a hormone signal is sent to the brain instructing puberty to commence.

Again, a professor of paediatric endocrinology at Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Emily Walvoord, notes that early puberty is one of the many outcomes of obesity.

Scientists confirm that several studies have shown an association between childhood obesity and early puberty in girls. They note that the fat tissue has the ability to convert other hormones into oestrogen, which they believe may lead to early breast development. “Fat also creates the hormone leptin, which is necessary for the onset of puberty,” they say.

What are the possible effects of early puberty, especially for girls?

Gynaecologists say children with early puberty are at a risk for accelerated skeletal maturation and short adult height. This, according to Dr. Goke Adefemi, is because girls who begin puberty sooner than normal experience an early growth spurt and are taller than their peers at first.

“But because their bones stop growing after puberty, they never reach their full height potential,” he warns.

Sociologists also express concern that when puberty debuts earlier than normal, childhood stage is shortened. They lament that girls who mature earlier tend to land in social situations they are not psychologically prepared to handle. They say early puberty makes girls to make early sexual debut, while they are also likely to experience sexual abuse, as well as psychological and social difficulties, including negative body image and depression.

Oncologists say altered puberty timing is also of concern for the development of reproductive tract cancers later in life. Consultant Oncologist/Head of Radiotherapy Department, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Remi Ajekigbe, at an earlier interview, says an early age of onset of menstruation is a risk factor for breast cancer later in life. For boys, early puberty is associated with an increased risk for testicular cancer.

A researcher with the Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, Dr. Anders Juul, warns that if girls mature early, they run into teenage problems at an early age and they’re more prone to diseases later on.

“We should be worried about this, regardless of what we think the underlying reasons might be. It’s a clear sign that something is affecting our children; whether it’s junk food, environmental chemicals or lack of physical activity,” Juul declares.

The experts advocate placing children on healthy diet right from birth, and not after the deed may have been done.

HealthWhy Circumcision Lowers Risk Of HIV by DTruSon(op): 2:58pm On May 03, 2013
Promising trials hinted that circumcision could lower rates of HIV infection, but until now, researchers didn’t fully understand why.

Now, in a study published in the journal mBio, scientists say that changes in the population of bacteria living on and around the penis may be partly responsible.

Relying on the latest technology that make sequencing the genes of organisms faster and more accessible, Lance Price of the Translational Genomics Research institute (TGen) and his colleagues conducted a detailed genetic analysis of the microbial inhabitants of the penis among a group of Ugandan men who provided samples before circumcision and again a year later.
While the men showed similar communities of microbes before the operation, 12 months later, the circumcised men harbored dramatically fewer bacteria that survive in low oxygen conditions. They also had 81% less bacteria overall compared to the uncircumcised men, and that could have a dramatic effect on the men’s ability to fight off infections like HIV, says Price. Previous studies showed that circumcised men lowered their risk of transmitting HIV by as much as 50%, making the operation an important tool in preventing infection with the virus. Why? A high burden of bacteria could disrupt the ability of specialized immune cells known as Langerhans cells to activate immune defenses. Normally, Langerhans are responsible for grabbing invading microbes like bacteria or viruses and presenting them to immune cells for training, to prime the body to recognize and react against the pathogens. But when the bacterial load increases, as it does in the uncircumcised penile environment, inflammatory reactions increase and these cells actually start to infect healthy cells with the offending microbe rather than merely present them.
That may be why uncircumcised men are more likely to transmit HIV than men without the foreskin, says Price, since the Langerhans cells could be feeding HIV directly to healthy cells.

HealthNewly Discovered Hormone Could Yield New Treatment For Diabetes by DTruSon(op): 10:50am On May 03, 2013
A breakthrough in helping the body to produce more insulin could make tedious injections of the hormone history.

In type 2 diabetes, the body gradually loses its ability to make enough insulin to keep up with the sugar coming in from the diet. Eventually, the overwhelmed system leaves these sugars, in the form of glucose, to build up in the blood, which can lead to obesity, damage the heart, and cause other metabolic problems.

And while insulin injections are an effective way to break down the glucose, keeping track of blood sugar levels with regular finger pricks and repeated insulin shots aren’t an ideal way to treat a chronic disease. But despite decades of research, scientists haven’t found a better way to address the problem.
Now, researchers working with mice at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute report in the journal Cell that they have discovered a hormone, betatrophin, that can prompt the body to generate more insulin-producing beta cells and, if the work is confirmed, the hormone could potentially do away with the need for regular insulin shots.

“We don’t understand the cause of type 2 diabetes, but everyone agrees that having more beta cells is better,” says Douglas Melton, senior author of the paper and co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. “No one doubts that’s not a good idea.”
It’s an exciting breakthrough in diabetes research, which for many years was focused on finding ways to externally supplement the body’s waning insulin levels. That’s because experts believed that once the pancreatic islet cells, the body’s insulin-making factories, were compromised, they couldn’t be made to work again. What’s more, they also surmised that only a specialized set of beta cells were equipped to make insulin, and that once diabetes set in, too few of these cells remained to pump out the critical hormone.
In animal studies, mice that were treated with another compound that compromised their ability to respond to insulin suddenly revved up production of more beta cells to compensate, and Melton’s team was able to isolate the hormone responsible – betatrophin. Over the course of a few weeks, mice bred to develop diabetes but injected with betatrophin were increased their beta cell population by 17 times. “I was impressed by the fact that the number of beta cells in the mice doubled in one week with one injection,” says Melton. “That’s a huge difference.”

What’s more, it appears the cells are relatively long-lasting, which could indicate they are robust enough to bring glucose levels in diabetics under control.

In theory, if the same results occur in people, it’s possible that those on the verge of developing diabetes might never progress to develop the disease, since the high blood sugar levels that can cause damage to tissues and lead the body to become less responsive to insulin could be avoided. It’s also possible that diabetics could lower their dependence on insulin and might even be able to wean themselves off of the injection altogether if their beta cell production is robust enough to provide the insulin they need.

PoliticsRe: Ribadu Report, Plan To Embarrass Government - Presidency by DTruSon(m): 1:35pm On Oct 26, 2012
“…there was no plan to cover up the findings of the committee, but that ANOTHER COMMITTEE HAS BEEN SET UP TO LOOK INTO THE CONTENTS”.

D above words ain’t mine but that of our Minister for Petroleum resources,Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Emotions apart, talking about how and why the committee report was leaked is like chasing a small rat where there is a big antelope… Any well meaning Nigerian will be more bothered on the alleged findings of the committee and not why and how it was leaked.

What are the facts here? 1.D report of Ribadu’s committee was leaked…2. D Minister of Petroleum was centrally indicted 3. Abati and the Minister’s spokesperson have invariably confirmed that the leaked report is perhaps the committees findings 4. No reaction has been made either by Ribadu or any member of the committee.

MY VIEW
To calm frayed nerves after d fuel subsidy brouhaha, GEJ / Madueke were desperate to ‘show’ Nigerians that they acted sincerely…Thus, they felt the only way to do this is to appoint someone with huge credibility to head one of the innumerable committees that the administration has set up since inception…The logic was (arguably) that ‘ if a notorious anti corruption crusader like Ribadu can give us a clean bill, Nigerians will no doubt be convinced that we acted sincerely’.

But this ‘plan’ has backfired!!!

As evidenced by the above quoted words of Madueke, another committee has been set up to probe the contents of Ribadu’s committee!!! I know as a matter of fact that whoever might have leaked the said report probably did so because he/she knows that it will be counter intuitive to submit a report that is against the person(s) that set up the panel… What more? D Minister has set up another committee that will give her a clean bill!!! And If the report has not been officially submitted as claimed by Abati, why is the Minister in a hurry to set up another committee to criticise the content of a report that has not been submitted?

In my view, the drama has just started!!! I hope ethnic / religious bigots will see how these people are stealing our collective wealth silly…D most baffling thing is that many ethnic bigots that comment on this page have allowed primeval sentiments to becloud their reasoning to the extent that they cannot see any sense in standing up against corrupt politicians…!!!
