A Concerned Citizen from Iragbiji, Boripe Local Government writes; The Importance of Lawmakers' Responsibilities: A Critique of Hon. Femi Popoola's Performance and Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola's Selfish Politics Lawmakers are elected officials who are responsible for representing the interests of their constituents in government. They are expected to propose, sponsor, and support legislation that will benefit their communities and the state at large. Unfortunately, not all lawmakers live up to these responsibilities. One such lawmaker is Hon. Femi Popoola, the deputy speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, who has failed to sponsor any reasonable bill in the house that could benefit his constituency and the state at large in his two terms as the Honourable representing Boluwaduro/Boripe State Constituency. As an elected representative, Hon. Femi Popoola has a responsibility to serve his constituents and work towards the development of the state. However, his lack of initiative and inability to sponsor any significant bill in the house is disappointing and disheartening. It is even more concerning that he has been in office for two terms and has nothing tangible to show for it. It is quite disheartening that Hon. Femi Popoola has not sponsored any reasonable bill that would impact positively his constituency and the state. As a representative of the people, it is his duty to identify the needs of his people and sponsor bills that would address these needs. His failure to do this indicates that he has not been proactive in his duties and has not been responsive to the yearnings of his constituents. However, what is more concerning is the remark made by the former governor of Osun State, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, in support of Hon. Femi Popoola's re-election bid. According to him, he is supporting Hon. Femi Popoola because he wants Iragbiji to take over after him, and not because of his performance or competence as a lawmaker. This statement shows that Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola has prioritized his personal interests over the interest of the people he was elected to serve. It is unacceptable for a leader to support a bad representative just because of personal interests. The election is meant to elect competent leaders who would represent the people and work for their welfare. Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola's reason for supporting Hon. Femi Popoola is not only selfish but also an insult to the people of the Boripe/Boluwaduro State Constituency. The people of the Boripe/Boluwaduro State Constituency should stand against bad leadership and show their disappointment by voting out Hon. Femi Popoola of the APC and vote for Yomi Aina of the PDP. It is high time the people took their destiny into their hands and voted for a leader who has their interests at heart. Governor Adeleke is determined to give the people of Osun dividends of democracy, and the people of Boripe/Boluwaduro State Constituency deserve to benefit from this. In conclusion, lawmakers have a crucial role to play in promoting good governance and providing effective representation for their constituents. Hon. Femi Popoola has failed in this regard, and the people of Boripe/Boluwaduro State Constituency deserve better. Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola's remark about re-electing a bad representative due to his personal interest is unacceptable, and the people should vote for competent leaders who have their interests at heart. The people of Osun State deserve competent and effective representation, and it is the responsibility of the lawmakers to provide it. The selfish interest of some lawmakers should not be allowed to frustrate the good governance that the people are already benefiting from the PDP-led administration under the leadership of Senator Ademola Adeleke.

Osun PDP Cries for Help, Says Our Members are Under Siege ●PDP Victims Targeted for Arrests by APC Merchants of Violence ●Top Leaders Hunted for Arrest ●Loses 10 members since January ●Seek Redeployment of Police Commisssioner Osun state Chapter of the Osun Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over ongoing Gestapo- like arrest of its top leaders, calling the development " a tgreat to democracy" Addressing a press conference with a statement tagged "Osun Is Under Siege", the State Caretaker Chairman of the party, Dr Adekunle Akindele said "we woke up to what appeared like rumours that Osun state would be invaded by armed men, both from the Nigerian police and notorious APC thugs imported from Lagos to be disguised as police operatives to cause mayhem and unrest in Osun State. "To the dismay of our party, these armed men were feried into the state and were received at the private home of the national secretary of the All Progressive Congress, who from good authority, handed the armed men handouts of leaders and members of the PDP to be arrested and detained for no just cause. "We call you to raise alarm on an ongoing unjust, unfair, draconian and dictatorial raid and arrest of PDP leaders across Osun state. "As I am addressing you today, PDP leaders are being hunted and arrested in Gestapo style. Across Osun state , houses of our leaders are being surrounded and raised even without search warrant. Where our leaders are not at home, their families are arrested and their cars taken away on various false pretext. "An undemocratic statewide operation is ongoing designed to pick and lock up prominent PDP leaders ahead of next state election. Our surprise is that such mass raid is being conducted against a ruling political party in clear violation of fundamental human rights of those affected "We want to note particularly that instead of arresting APC members who are attacking PDP members on daily basis, the said statewide is targeting the victims instead of the culprits. PDP members are the victims of APC violence. Now PDP members are the ones being arrested. "Five of our members were killed at Ilesa shortly after the visit of the state Governor. At Ila Orangun , four members of PDP were killed by rampaging APC thugs. At Irewole , four of our members were gunned do2n by an APC squad. Across the state, APC militants have been harassing and maiming PDP members. "Unfortunately, the Police Commissioner has not being professional in the discharge of his duties. All petitions from PDP on violent attacks on our members are not attended to. We have come to the conclusion that the the state election Commissioner is biased and partisan. "We call for his redeployment with immediate effect. "It is thus sad that instead of attending to the petitions of the victims, the ongoing operation is targetting the victims, the PDP All these are ploys to disrupt the peace of Osun State ahead of the rescheduled house of assembly election slated for next Saturday. "A situation where Apc chieftains became mouthpiece of the Nigerian police, analysing who and who to arrest and for crimes that best suit their whims, reinforces our fears that security institutions have been compromised in the state. "Our great party uses this opportunity to call on president Mohammadu Buhari as father and chief security officer of the nation to beam his searchlight on the nefarious plans of the Apc to disrupt the peace of the state using the police ahead of the coming election. Unjust arrest or detaining leaders of our party in the impossible giuse of plotting against the people of the state will surely bear unpalable consequences. "Election should not be war for those who are in good stead in deeds and acceptability to the people, who are constitutionally empowered to choose their representatives at all levels of government. Again, no democracy will thrive under a forced or fraudulent process, which was the bane of the immediate past administration in the state. "The IGP should rather conduct proper investigation of APC political warmongers, whose only route to self survival is violence and bloodshed. It is no-brainer that all recent cases of political attacks in parts of the state were masterminded by Apc desperados, who are battling hard to escape punishment for their past sins of mismanaging the state. "Both the election and substantive commissioners of police in Osun State are also called upon to be professional in their conducts and resist all entreaties to intimidate the people of the state as doing so will be akin to stamping on the tail of a 'gentle cobra'. "Let us make it clear that Osun people cannot be intimidated. Those nursing perilous thought of causing mayhem to inflict psychological trauma on the people should persih the thought or live to nurse their defeat because Osun cannot be cowed. "While we await the drama of the security operatives disguised as special forces, we enjoing the good people of Osun State to remain calm, go about their lawful businesses but should be vigilant and resolute on their resolve to detach themselves from harrowing experiences of the past. "If they could not defeat the state since july 16 2022 governorship election till they were overwhemed in the last National Assembly election, they certainly will be defeated again, more devastatingly", the party Chairman vowed.

One begins to wonder what could bring this sudden expression of joy amidst the current National mood occasioned by the duo of Naira and Fuel scarcity. Alas, true to his words and in fulfillment of the earlier approval given by the state Governor, Senator Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke via the office of the Head of Service for the commencement of payment of salary arrears to the state civil servants, the payment commenced today as credit alert started rolling in to the various civil servants who have been owed 30 months Salary arrears by the previous administration. Comrade Adebowale Osun State workers will never fotget the good gesture of the state governor as according to him, many of their members have gone under wilth many others incapacitated due to lack of adequate welfare on the part of past administration, especially on the modulated salary arrears. Also speaking to our correspondent, a civil servant from the Ministry of Commerce, Corporative and Empowerment expressed Joy as she declared that the civil servants couldn’t believe that this payment could ever materialize again in their lifetime, “When the Governor announced the plan to pay the salary arrears, we didn’t believe it, we even thought where is he going to get the money, I was pleasantly surprised to receive the alert this afternoon and that’s exactly why everyone is jumping in excitement” she commented. Another civil servant from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs declared that most of the civil servants had already forgone the payment and today’s payment indeed came at a great surprise to everyone, “We already thought the money has gone. On the order of SRJ (senate spokesperson from osun central senatorial district); Osun State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker, Hon. Femi Popoola and APC House of Reps candidate for Ila federal constituency, Hon. Adebisi Obawale, a police man shot a member of PDP in Boluwaduro local government. The victim was seen ferried away, on their way going, the officers who were in the car with the victim were accusing him of destroying SRJ billboard which is far from the truth. Though, the officer who released the fire claimed that it was an accidental discharge. The victim was dropped at hospital without making any payment. As we speak, the victim is in critical condition in the hospital We therefore call on Osun police commissioner to warn his men not to be tools in the hands of APC, because we cannot continue to fold our arms and watch our members being killed because of political desperation of SRJ. Osun State police command may soon have more issues to deal with should those behind this mindless shooting not brought to book immediately. PDP is a peace loving party, hence we call on police boss to as a matter of duty fish out the officer who shot our member.

Osun Buga judgement and the impending doom for Nigeria's democrary By Sarafa Ibrahim For some time now, a lot of Nigerians have expressed concerns about the growing incursion of the judiciary into the decision-making on who leads the people. As against the known practice in democrary making the people the ultimate decider on who rules over their affairs, the judiciary in Nigeria is taking up that role. This distortion of democrary is causing a whole lot of worries, and one of such was expressed by a former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, who had during a visit to TOSTV Network studios in Abuja said "I have already made a public statement on that to the effect that ballot paper and not the judiciary should determine who wins elections or select political leaders. The ballot paper should be the only basis for selecting political leaders." And last Friday, the very disturbing trend that Jonathan canvassed against raised its ugly head in Osun state. Justice Tertse Kume who led the Osun election petition tribunal did the unthinkable as he went outside the dictate of his power in pronouncing a winner for the Osun election. The basis of the obscure and ridiculous judgement was that the elected Governor, Ademola Adeleke, did not score the majority of lawful votes after deducting votes in disputed polling units. But that was not even what the law empowers him to do, assuming without conceding that his verdict on alleged over-voting was right. For the education of those who may not know, Section 51(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 stipulates that "Where the result of an election is cancelled in accordance with subsection (2), there shall be no return for the election untill another poll has taken place in the affected polling unit." In other words, the judgement of Justice Kume runs foul of the provision of the law. What the judgement did, in essence, was to shut the door to nearly one-third of the state from having a say in who will administer the state. By any stretch, it smears the real intent of democrary, and worse, a mockery of the law. In Osun, the impression that the majority judgement gave to most people is that Justice Kume simply awarded the state to Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite having lost at the poll. And this can not be faulted considering the fact that the basis of the majority decision of the Tribunal was flawed and defied any sense of justice. It should be unthinkable that a court would be a place to overturn the clear will of voters based on a controversial evidence. Apart from the fact that the BVAS report relied upon by Justice Kume to make a decision has been disputed by the maker, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it is inconceivable that the accreditation data on the BVAS machines used for the election was ignored by the jury. The BVAS machines were the device used at the various polling units to accredit voters. It is also a fact that BVAS machines were the originator of the accreditation data, and as such, the primary source of evidence to determine the true number of accredited voters for the election. Yet, Justice Kume went for a secondary source of evidence that is housed in faraway Abuja, which is susceptible to hacking and manipulations. In short, Justice Kume turned a blind eye to the accreditation data on BVAS machines which were physically present at the polling units he ordered, and went for the accreditation data on a server not known to many of the voters in the election. It is like throwing away a chicken and embracing the egg she laid. Does that not foul of logic and justice? What the decision of Justice Kume portrayed is an extreme partisan fervour targeted at robbing the people of their power to choose their leader. The implication of this would mean that the people do not need to take part in an election since whatever they decided on the ballot may not matter but the partisan instincts of the jury. This will most likely put the decision on who leads on the judiciary, and not the people, as democrary was structured to operate. What this would therefore mean is that a judge would have unrestrained power to upturn election, especially when the winner is not someone he likes, as Justice Kume plainly demonstrated in his judgement by mocking Governor Ademola Adeleke. To be frank, the threat posed to Nigeria's democrary by the pronouncement of Justice Kume is far-reaching. The moment the judiciary becomes just another political tool, especially one used to hijack states by those who know how to manipulate it, it begins to lose any faith left in it by the people. No amount of legal fantasies can cover for an obvious plot to take away the power of the people in a democrary. What just happened in Osun is a reminiscence of the 2018 mandate heist. While 'remote control' was the tool used to usurp the mandate of the people in 2018, now the least expected source, the judiciary is posing as the tool. It is time for the leadership of the judiciary to rise up and ensure the sustenance of the will of the people before compromised officers are used to steal away our democracy forever.

Illegally Employed Workers Remain Disengaged - Osun State Government Those illegally employed by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola are no longer in the employment of the state government and no amount of blackmail can change that reality, the State Government has announced. Reacting to the pocket of demonstration by members of the All Progressives Congress(APC) employed towards the tail end of the last government, the State Government in a statement by the Special Assistant, Community Communications to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Mr Tunde Busari, noted that Mr Oyetola deliberately padded the state payroll with APC members to create stage for deeper financial crisis, conflict and disharmony. " Those engaging in demonstrations are APC members smuggled into the state payroll by former Governor Oyetola. By virtue of the Executive Order issued by Mr Governor, those illegally employed remain sacked and are no longer staff of the state government. No amount of demonstration and blackmail can change that reality. " We have the details of plan by APC to deploy its disengaged members for demonstration. However, the people of Osun state are in the know of the whole situation especially the several warnings by the PDP while in opposition. We warned against colluding with Mr Oyetola during those last days when the former Governor was issuing employment letter despite the State's inability to pay staff salaries. " Those APC members are now playing the script. They have failed from the beginning as this administration will not bow to unjustified demands from those who collaborated to deepen Osun financial woes", the statement noted. 100 Days Agenda: Osun PDP Applauds Governor Ademola Adeleke The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has applauded the state Governor, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke for his unflinching love for the people of the state as contained in his multiple intervention programs to better the lots of the citizenry in the state. The PDP particularly eulogized the governor for riding through the odds to hit rhe ground running as the state helmsman and commit his administration to measured deliverables to the people within the first one hundred days in office. The rural electrification and mass water projects embarked upon by the governor,, according to a statement from the office of the Osun State PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr Akindele Adekunle, are indicative of an administration that is prepared to affect lives without any form of segregation. That the state government also allowed target beneficiaries to unanimously choose locations of these stopgap interventions, underscores the core value of democracy, with the people as the main focus, the PDP chairman noted. Dr Akindele also assured the people of the state that Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke will continue to address their needs compassionately as contained in his electoral promises, just as he enjoined them to continue to join hands with rhe PDP administration in ensuring that all projects embarked upon by the State Government are gaurded jealousy and protected from avowed saboteurs. He however called on members of the public, to be wary of those he described as enemies of the state who are trying to reset agenda for the governor with a view to discrediting the noble steps mapped by the state government in measured time to frontally meet the good people of the state at the very points of their needs. “PDP administration is not given to ego massaging and that is why leaders of communities and people alike, will continue to be pivotal in decision making mechanism of the state government, especially when it comes to citing of projects for the good of all in the state” ” We are therefore not surprised that some disgruntled elements of the defeated opposition, who are devastated by the massive approach of Governor Ademola Adeleke to governance, had begun to run helter skelter, deliberately reworking the Governor’s 100 days pledge outside of the open and well circulated agenda of water, rural electrification, primary health care, roads and and schools rehabilitation. This, we are confident will faill and fall on them as usual. ‘Our great party, the PDP is proud of our dear Governor for his people oriented disposition and we call on our people in other spheres of life in the state, to remain calm and be assured of the state government’s interventions as the case may demand either on immediate, medium or long term basis” Dr Akindele concluded. TEXT OF AN ADDRESS DELIVERED BY HIS EXCELLENCY, SENATOR ADEMOLA ADELEKE AT THE LAUNCHING OF EMBLEM FOR THE YEAR 2023 ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY PROTOCOL Today is another significant period to mark and remember the unquantifiable contributions of members of Nigeria's Armed Forces to the peace and stability of our great country, Nigeria.
