Nairaland GeneralMeditation Makes You More Creative by dunsman(op): 1:42pm On Sep 03, 2015
Certain meditation techniques can promote creative thinking, even if
you have never meditated before. This is the outcome of a study by
cognitive psychologist Lorenza Colzato and Dominique Lippelt at
Leiden University, published in Mindfulness.
Long-lasting influence
The study is a clear indication that you don't need to be an
experienced meditator to profit more from meditation. The findings
support the belief that meditation can have a long-lasting influence on
human cognition, including how we conceive new ideas. Besides
experienced meditators, also novices may profit from meditation.
Different techniques, different effects
But the results demonstrate that not all forms of meditation have the
same effect on creativity. Test persons performed better in divergent
thinking (= thinking up as many possible solutions for a given problem)
after Open Monitoring meditation (= being receptive to every thought
and sensation). The researchers did not see this effect on divergent
thinking after Focused Attention meditation (=focusing on a particular
thought or object.)
Setup of the study
40 individuals participated in this study, who had to meditate for 25
minutes before doing their thinking tasks. There were both experienced
mediators and people who never meditated before. The study
investigated the influences of different types of meditative techniques
on the two main ingredients of creativity:
Divergent thinking Allows for many new ideas to be generated. It is
measured using the so-called Alternate Uses Task method where
participants are required to think up as many uses as possible for
a particular object, such as a pen.
Convergent thinking Convergent thinking, on the other hand, is a
process whereby one possible solution for a particular problem is
generated. This is measured using the Remote Associates Task
method, where three unrelated words are presented to the
participants, words such as 'time', 'hair' and 'stretch'. The
participants are then asked to identify the common link: in this
case, 'long'.

FashionLadies?? Check Out How To Take Care Of Your Jewelries by dunsman(op): 8:26pm On Sep 02, 2015
To keep costume jewerly in good shape, attention and special care is required. So if you are a fan of costume jewerly, you should check these three easy ways to take good care of them.
An average lookisn't complete these without a form of costune jewery are usually inexpensive but look good and sometimes one gets lucky great one's that look pretty expensive.
When it comes to choosing the type of jwerly you want, one should consider one's lifesytle, and affordability. As the saying goes that cut your coat according to your size.
Without wasting too much time, here are the three steps to caring for them.

VINEGAP
Pour some white vinegar into a bowl and soak in your jewerly for about 20 minutes. Pull out the jewerly then brush it off with toothbrush. Rinse and dry well with soft clean clothe.
Note that some type of jewerly shouldn't be soaked in vinegar, especially jewerlr with soft gems like pearls, fake pearls, chinestone with foil backings, gluess in rhinestones.
You can also soak vinegar onto a cotton bud and leave it touching the areas with accumulated dirt (usually in form of green grunk) only. This will protect the stones and other delicate parts in the jewerlry.

DRY TOOTHBRUSH
Take a dry toothbrush and brush it across the gunk removing as much as you can.

TOOTHPICK
The easiest way to remove dirt is through the use of good old toothpick. Sometimes, a toothpick is all it takes to get out the dirt or green grunk on small spots on jewelry.

RomanceHow To Mend A Broken Heart by dunsman(op): 1:00pm On Sep 02, 2015
The pain of a romantic breakup may hit women harder at first, but they recover far more quickly from the loss than men do, new research suggests.

"At some point, clearly, women get over a breakup," said study author Craig Morris, a research associate at Binghamton University in New York. "They will discuss in great detail the pain, the suffering, the misery, but they are talking about it in the past."

Women often "return to the dating scene in many ways better than they were before," he said, having learned from and processed their mistakes.

Conversely, men may not feel the same sharp jab of pain initially, yet they may never recover fully emotionally, Morris found.

"When you talk to a man about a breakup," Morris said, "you can see he is still there. The anger. The disappointment. There was never any end to this for him. Most men never use the phrase, 'I got over it.' "

The study was published recently in the journal Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences.

The findings are based on input from more than 5,700 men and women from 96 countries who answered questions about breakups online. Of course, Morris said, the findings "are huge generalizations" and don't describe everyone's experience.

However, after a split, women averaged a score of 6.8 for emotional anguish on a scale of zero to 10, while men averaged less, 6.6. Women said their physical pain was about 4.2 of 10; for men, it was 3.75 of 10.

The differences are partly explained by biology, Morris said. Traditionally, a woman has more to lose by dating the wrong person. She risks pregnancy after even a brief encounter, he said, whereas the man has no biological investment should he choose not to stick around.

However, Morris said, "it is far more than biology." Breakups don't hurt just because a person has lost what Morris called "reproductive access to someone." Beyond that, he said, "psychologically we experience this love and a craving for intimacy."

Women may have more initial pain, he said, due to an anxiety and fear response to the breakup. Being physically alone may drive those feelings for women, he said.

The findings support some older research about sex differences in breakups, but they also add detail about post-breakup grief, said T. Joel Wade, a professor of psychology at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.

The new research suggests that men should seek help, Wade said, such as social support from others or from a counselor. "Women get over it faster because they seek social support and use positive coping methods," he said.

Viewing a breakup as adaptive may speed recovery for both men and women, Wade said. That means viewing the breakup as allowing you "to get out of a bad relationship and move on to a better one," Wade explained.

Morris agreed men should seek help and support. "Men are conditioned to grin and bear it," he said. They may go out for a drink with buddies, he said, but he would not expect to hear they tried to "process" their breakup by discussing it over a beer. Men often move on to another relationship without processing the previous one, he finds.

Men should be allowed and encouraged to reach out, to share feelings and to ask for help, Morris added.

HealthThe Concept Of Stress, and How It Affects Our Everyday Thinking by dunsman(op): 12:37pm On Sep 02, 2015
THE CONCEPT OF STRESS AND HOW IT AFFECTS OUR EVERYDAY THINKING

Before I embark on this article, it is important to note that stress just like death is inevitable, no matter the work you do. no matter how easy it is, you must experience stress.
WHAT IS STRESS, and WHAT IS A STRESSOR?
In a simple definition, stress is anything that poses a challenge to our well being.
A stressor is an agent or stimulus that causes stress. Examples are noise, unpleasant people, a speding car, or even going out on a first date.
SOURCES OF STRESS
NOTE that we experience stress in different ways, your own source of stress might be different from mine. It depends on what you do, people you associate yourself with and your environment in general that dtermines your source of stress. Nevertheless, some of the sources of stress are listed below.
1) Place of work
2) peer group
3) your spouse
4) your evironmet i.e is it an always busy one or just a cool one
5) your ambitions
There are other sources of stress than the one's listed above, but cause of the context of this article, i won't dwell so much into it.
When we are stressed, so many things happen. Wether to your body system or you transfer to others, throught anger, hate e.t.c. When we are stressed, the following happens;
1) blood pressure rises
2) breathing bcomes more rapid
3) digestive system slows down
4) heart rate rises
5) muscles becomes tense
6) we do not sleep i.e heightened state of alertness.
HOW DO WE RESPOND TO STRESS
Most of us hve varying interpretations of what stress is about, and what matters. Some of us focus on what happens to us, such as breaking a bone or getting a promotion. What really matters are our thoughts about the situation in which we find ourselves.
HOW WE RESPOND TO STRESS AFFECTS OUR HEALTH
1) we do not interpret each situation in the same way.
2) because of this, we do not use the same resources for each situation
3) we do not have the same resources and skills.
Some situations which are not negative occurrence can still be perceived as stressful. This is because we are not completely prepared to cope with them effectively. Examples are; having a baby, moving to a nicer home, and being promoted. Having a baby is usually a wonderful thing to do, likewise moving to a nicer house and geting a promotion.
It is important to note that what causes stress itself is not the stressor, but how we react to the stress. Researches made it known that; a persistent negative response to challenges (stress) will eventually have a negative effect on your health and happiness. Experts say people who tend to perceive things negatively need to understand themselves and their reactions to stress-provoling situations. Then they can learn to manage stress successfully.

ladyF:
I dont know what kind of drones they will be using. There are ordinary surveillance drones, then they are the ones that are made for combat. They have their disadvantages tho. There were reports that a drone spotted the planes involved in the 9-11 attacks, but it was a surveillance drone so there was not much it could have done. A drone can be as small as the size of a ladies handbag....so u can see how useful it can turn out to be.

But I think the drones are cost effective compared to having people on ground. Take note that u will have to pay these people on a monthly basis plus other operational cost.

https://www.nairaland.com/2569311/oil-theft-nnpc-deploy-drones

Read a thread at d link above saying dat NNPC to deploy drones to stop oil theft. Pls am in d dark here. Which type of drones are they talking about?? Is it military drones like the ones in the image below or just supervising drones?
If its military drones, why I think it will be a bad decision by the NNPC

1) drones are high military hardwares that requires great technical knowledge,. Do we have such in Nigeria?? Am not trying to mock us o, but reason with me ordinary helicopters we do have crashes not to talk of a drone. And if paraventure a drone happens to crash near an oil pipe.. Uhmm I don need to tell what will happen.

2) military drones that I know of has a maximum level that it can reach to the ground thereby making it impossible for close missile bombardments, instead they are usual used for random strikes, now tell me can this type of technique be used in hunting oil thieves?? Wat if an oil pipe bust?? Is dat not tragedy??

3) Rather than spending such huge amount of money on acquiring a drone just to hunt oil thieves in the South, the drones should be used in bombing d entire sambisa forest and all boko haram strong holds in Nigeria.. It will be more useful that way.

4) can we really cope with the side effects of drones, cause if drones get into wrong hands, a single missile can wipe out my mother's village and we know our military capabilities dont let us add to our problems

With these points I will urge the NNPC to rethink.. Cause drones are not toys oo u guys should remember hiroshima

I just pray its a supervision drone with little or no weapon attached. Below are the images of military and amazon drones below.
Thanks

RomanceWhen Man Meets Woman: Texting Do’s And Don’t For Dating by dunsman(op): 8:25pm On Sep 01, 2015
Guys from generation X may remember calling a gal on the phone after
initially
Guys from generation X may remember calling a gal on the phone after
initially meeting, yet today, texting is much more frequent and
likely preferred, especially in the beginning of a relationship.
Therefore, it’s important for guys to understand the norms, do’s,
and don’ts aligned with texting etiquette.

More funny and Less Naggy

No one likes a nag and it is easier to be perceived as one via
texts without a de-codable tone or facial expression to go along
with the message. Keep texts filled with banter, and if you
need to be more serious or concerned, then choose your words
wisely. Girls probably don’t want a nagging boyfriend
complaining about the infrequency of calls or asking about
where they have been. If you need to get something across, try
being more funny and less naggy.

Be Interested

Those who show interest are rewarded with reciprocated
interest. Try to keep the conversation even by asking questions
about her while not being too selfish, only talking about
yourself. Don’t dominate texts with your concerns or
statements. Try to consider the interest of the other person.

Leave Some Topics for Face-to-Face Conversation?

Something like, “What’s wrong?” or “Why have you seemed so
distant lately?” is not really appropriate for a text. Such is
better left for a face-to-face conversation paired with other
cues such as tone of voice and facial expression. As discussed,
it is difficult to fully understand some information via texts.
Leave some questions, concerns, and conversations for a
different time when you can meet in person.

Keep a Good Balance of Time

You don’t want to inundate her with information and a barrage
of questions in real time yet you don’t want to try to ‘play it
cool’ by purposely waiting to reply back to her. Maintain a good
balance regarding the timing of back-and-forth texts. If you take
too long to respond, you may come across as uninterested
rather than being successful in making her want you more.

PoliticsWhat I Discussed With Buhari --- Jonathan by dunsman(op): 1:39am On Sep 01, 2015
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that he warned President Muhammadu Buhari not to subject his person and his former cabinet members to media trials but rather allow the law take its course. According to Nation Newspaper, dated August 31, 2015, the former President few days ago met with with some members of his cabinet in a bid to defend his integrity during his Six-year rule revealing to them what he discussed with Buhari during his 20-minute August 6 visit. Jonathan had paid a visit to Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting was held inside the President’s official residence. That was the first time Jonathan would be visiting the Presidential Villa since he left on the morning of May 29 for the Eagles Square where Buhari took his oath of office and allegiance as his (Jonathan’s) successor. Buhari’s administration had been investigating some activities of Jonathan’s administration with government officials, claiming that the past administration was characterised by impunity and large scale corruption. Some former aides of the ex-President such as his National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki (his Chief Security Officer, Gordon Obuah; and the former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, among others have either been arrested, detained or investigated. On May 27, less than 48 hours to the end of his tenure, Jonathan had advised Buhari not to single out his administration in any probe. A source was quoted as saying “The ex-President confided in the meeting that he was worried that the gains of his administration were being washed away daily by the allegations of corruption being reeled out by the government. “He said he called the session to set the records straight and get facts because his administration was not enjoying any benefit of doubt among Nigerians, especially the media. “At a point, Jonathan, in an emotional manner told the meeting that ‘I am not a thief in office as being portrayed.” Another source said the former President asked all the ex-ministers to “brace for the probe ahead and keep their records intact to reply Buhari’s administration on issues being raised. “The ex-ministers unanimously agreed that there were better sides of Jonathan’s administration than being painted as tenure of graft. “The key ministries, such as Works, Finance, Health, Aviation, Education and even Petroleum Resources were mandated to produce lists of achievements. “Some of the ex-ministers lamented that the Permanent Secretaries proving to Buhari as holier-than-thou were part of the Jonathan administration and they even made input into the handover notes.” Responding to a question, the source said: “Jonathan and the ex- ministers admitted that the administration might have some issues to clear in the management of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. “But they said the situation was not as bad in the oil sector as being alleged.” A third source said: “I think we should expect some fireworks in the next few days. The meeting resolved to reach out to the public in the same equal weight the allegations of corruption will be released by the Buhari administration. “But there was a word of caution that any response must not be abusive. The President personally appointed a former Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Suleiman, to sign any statement on cabinet issues. It was learnt that some of the ex-Ministers asked Jonathan what he actually discussed with Buhari. “The President said he raised two issues with President Buhari within 20 minutes. This border on the need to avoid media trial on any allegation of corruption being looked into. He said he told Buhari that his image and members of his cabinet were being dragged in the mud. He said even in law, an accused person is deemed innocent until proven guilty. “Jonathan also said he asked Buhari to leave the Election Petition Tribunals in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states to do their work instead of the hounding of some INEC officials and politicians by DSS.” www.post-nigeria.com/what-i-discussed-with-buhari-jonathan/
