Tuesday’s appointments into the board of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) by President Muhammadu Buhari violated the law, TheCable can report. Buhari appointed Ahmed Lawan Kuru as the managing director and named Kola Ayeye, Eberechukwu Uneze and Aminu Ismail as the executive directors following the expiration of the five-year tenure of the previous board. Their appointments took “immediate effect”, according to a statement from the president’s office. However, section 10 (1) of the AMCON Act 2010 stipulates that the board shall be appointed by the president “subject to the confirmation of the Senate”. The president did not send their names to the senate for confirmation as stipulated in the law. TheCable understands that the head of service, Danladi Kifasi, has been informed of the anomaly which he is now trying to rectify. The senate has adjourned till September 29 but it can be recalled to confirm the nominees. There is yet another contravention as section 10 (1) (c) of the AMCON Act stipulates that the board “shall consist of 3 Executive Directors who shall be nominated by the Central Bank of Nigeria in consultation with the Minister”. The minister is identified as that of the federal ministry of finance in section 10 (1) (a). But there is no minister of finance as Buhari is yet to constitute his cabinet since his inauguration in May — an indication that no minister was involved in the process as stipulated by law. The appointment of the new MD may pass the scrutiny in this regard as he is only to be recommended by the central bank, according to section 10 (1) (b) which says “a Managing Director [shall be] nominated by the Central Bank of Nigeria”. The part-time chairman has not been appointed. Other vacancies yet to be filled are the five non-executive directors, two of whom are to be nominated by the federal ministry of finance, two by the central bank and one by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). Responding to a question from TheCable, Femi Adesina, presidential spokesman, said the noticed anomalies are being corrected. It is believed that the procedural errors might have been caused by the fact that the attorney general and secretary to the government of the federation are yet to be appointed. The National Union of Electricity Employees on Wednesday, disrupted activities at Electricity Distribution Companies in the South South over alleged violation of workers’ rights. NUEE’s Senior Assistant General Secretary, Cyprian Akon, confirmed the development in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. He said that electricity distribution companies in Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom had been shut down until further notice. Akon said that NUEE had instructed its members to clamp down on the companies especially, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company because unionists were sacked and their salaries reduced. He said that the era of violation of workers’ rights was over. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the union had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the management of PHEDC which expired last week. Akon said it was regrettable that PHEDC had continued to violate workers’ rights, treating labour-related issues with disdain. He said there would be no power supply to the four states, where the PHEDC covered and that workers would not render services to the company until the union directed otherwise. He alleged that the management arbitrarily dismissed employees and terminated their appointments without cogent reasons. The union leader said 33 workers, who refused management’s efforts to slash their salaries, were deployed to other locations and later sacked. “This level of deceit, intimidation and victimisation cannot go unchallenged. “Having allowed PHEDC to operate for about two years without disturbance with the management violating workers’ rights with impunity; labour has decided to act,’’ he said. Akon said the union did not want Nigerians to think that it had been sabotaging the operations of the companies because of its opposition to the privatisation of the sector. The story of a radical Islamic preacher who tried to flee to Nigeria, witnessed The story of a radical Islamic preacher who tried to flee to Nigeria, witnessed aftergrowth as the authorities wondered how the fugitive terrorist had received a Nigerian visa in Lebanon. Ahmad al-Assir, who had been in hiding for two years, over the weekend was seized at Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut trying to board a plane to Nigeria. Al-Assir is also believed to have ties with the Islamic State group. He was locally tagged the “emir” of the ISIS branch in Lebanon. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Al-Assir changed his look and used a fake passport in an attempt to board a plane On Tuesday, August 18, President Muhammadu Buhari was said to have urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate the issue and provide an adequate explanation. This comes amid the government’s attempt to wipe out the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast of the country. READ ALSO: 9-Yr-old Yoruba Boy Writes Letter To Boko Haram (Photos) The whole story raised fears among Nigerians, as Boko Haram earlier this year pledged its allegiance to ISIS, which is considered to be the richest and one of the most powerful terrorist groups in the world. Reacting to the development, anti-Buhari readers blasted the incumbent president. Some even accused him of intentionally covering up terrorism. Onu Promise Onyinyechukwu: “Buhari invited his colleague is an expected thing boko haram and Isis hv the same vision sai buhari.” Oforkansi Virginus: “Boko haram plegde allegiance to ISIS and Buhari is the leader of Boko harem,so the two leaders want to meet and discuss the way foward for their terrorist organizations.” Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Bashir Abdullahi: “Sai buhari, thanks for invite isis leader.” Jacob Okenyi: “Ask Mr president integrity, who gave the military three months to wipe out boko haram. Maybe he invited this terrorist to help the military as part of the helps promised by the American government. This regime is too deceptive.” The others, however, wondered why President Buhari had fallen under criticism. They called for a thorough investigation of the matter. Chinwe Igbo: “Our president deserves some respect pls… Remember God is watching all of us, if u will feel bad when accused falsely do not accuse someone else falsely too, most of u accusing our president of terrorism when called upon will not be able to prove anything so be warned, and learn to pray for our government than criticising them.” Ibrahim L Dibal: “We should pray for d head well n stop d pointing finger .let just use the time to fish out d solution to d problem.” Based on the comments, one thing is common for everyone though: everyone is concerned, everyone is scared that ISIS might extend its activities to Nigeria. Mojirade Emmanuela Abidola: “Oh my God. So, Isis leader was on his way coming to nigeria before arrested!” Emeka Chima: “Dis is nt a suprise, few weeks ago i saw d new map of ISIS, nigeria is among d nation they said they wil capture b/4 d year 2020. D questn is can nigeria stop them?” Nnaemeka Enemchukwu: “ISIS leader with nigerian visa, when sheakau is still blasting every where. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has posted a Facebook photo suggesting Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has posted a Facebook photo suggesting bombing of “the Muslim world” with nuclear weapons. The Facebook photo posted on Sunday night shows a mushroom cloud rising up through the air after the explosion of an atomic bomb with a text saying “Japan has been at peace with the US since August 9, 1945. It’s time we made peace with the Muslim world.” On August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and three days later another atomic bomb on Nagasaki during World War II, killing at least 129,000 civilians and prompting Japan’s unconditional surrender. Miller’s Facebook photo was removed sometime on Monday morning but it has received more than 300 comments. He is now under harsh criticism but has not apologized for posting the controversial photo. His office has not responded to requests for comment. Sid Miller will not apologize for the social media post that calls for the atomic bombing of “the Muslim world.” Todd Smith, the Republican's campaign spokesman, said that, “We’re not going to apologize for the posts that show up on our Facebook page.” Smith said about 18 people have access to the campaign account. “I don’t know who did it, but I’m not going to start a witch hunt to find out who did.” Texas Democrats released a statement Monday afternoon condemning Miller’s post. “It is unacceptable for Republican Sid Miller to be promoting such disgusting rhetoric. Sadly, this kind of racist, xenophobic hate speech qualifies you for higher office with Republicans’ Tea Party fringe base,” said Manny Garcia, Texas Democratic Party’s deputy executive director. “We hope Sid Miller shows some respect for Texans and the responsibility of holding state office and issues an apology,” he added. In January, Miller said that he could not sleep at night for the fear of the United States becoming a “Muslim country.” During the Texas Public Policy Foundation forum, he raised the issue, asking, “Are we doing enough?” http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2015/08/18/425219/US-Sid-Miller-atomic-bomb
