any luck with finding the PC dvb card or box? cos' that can solve ur Bleep issues- tons of such downloads take place every single minute sad on W3A.
TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 5:51pm On Jun 25, 2008
@F_Marshal
yes. it does everything a normal analog tv card or box does - the main diff. is that it works with satellite signals (dvb-S) and it also doubles up as data receiver. so u can actually use it as a PVR on ur PC to record programs.
TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 10:12am On Jun 25, 2008
@sfinxone
the speed actually varies per the various users. the fastest i have seen so far is 115kps and usually movies (700mb or 1.37gb) from that IP takes about two to three hours. on the whole u've to be patient - that is why the term 'fishing'. I usually leave my setup on for about eight hrs and i end up with all kinds of files - the only thing is I have to be selective since my harddisk can't accomodate all the data that I grab. I imagine u can grab a lot if the setup is left on the whole day.

@all
this is what my DVB-S PCI card and USB box looks like. becareful they don't sell u the wrong gadget.

TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 5:37pm On Jun 24, 2008
Currently my set up is on W3A 7 east. TP 12520H, 27500.  I do get a lot of new releases - dvdrips as well as camrips(ie. avi and divx files) the downside is majority come in Fr or Rus language so i download the subtitles online to make it understandable. i guess a lot of the traffic on that bird orginates from our french speaking brothers. I stopped fishing for mp3's - i have too much now. and the folks on that sat are SMUT(Bleep) crazy - i delete way too much. i only fish for programs bigger than 300mb.

i have been trying other locations but i always revert back to W3a - it has the most active 'tcp threads'. i messed up my c-band lnbf so until i get a new one i am stuck on W3a.

i am in GH. but i imported my card and box since i couldn't find one locally. You should ask around for a DVB-S or DVB-S2 maybe u will have better luck.

Hi all,

This thread is really a branch of the Free to air "Thread" on this forum.  Arguably we should get a forum dedicated to satellite activities to archive everything related to satellites.

Satellite fishing (grabing)! What is it?

To understand data grabing you must know how satellite communication works. To send data to satellites (can be any data) we use an Uplink Station which are located here on earth. The satellite in the Sky receives the data and then it retransmits it to the earth. This works perfectly for Video channels. But the uplink can contain any kind of data so why not use it for internet. But it works a bit differently than conventional internet where you send and receive data on the same line. In satellite internet you uplink data through your local internet (Dial-UP, ISDN,ADSL) and get the downstream from satellite. Why this complicated procedure why not use Uplink and Downlink from the satellite? It can be done but requires expensive equipment so every one cant afford such uplink hardware therefore we use the local uplink (normal dial-up) and then get the data (downloads) through satellite.

To get connected to the internet through satellites you will need the following:

a) Computer with a PC-DVB PCI card or USB box installed.
b) Dish pointed towards a satellite which contains data channels.

with these setup you will be required to pay a subscription for your access and you have the ability to BROWSE!

Now this same dvb Pc cards or boxes are use for satellite tv reception and so if you happen to have one for FTA purposes then with the correct software and provided your dish is pointed to a satellite with a data transponder  then you can literally benefit from the data transmissions (leech undecided) at no extra cost.

The data transmission includes all manner of files ranging from documents, movies, mp3's etc.

The programs that are used for the offline downloads can analyze the data to know their extension and hence associate a program to open them.There are quite a number of this programs out there with the authors being ruskies!

You can't BROWSE with this setup! But you can sure have some nice files and programs for free! You also don't have a say in what you get during offline downloading and it may be terminated by the one downloading too!

Equipment Detail

PC
The PC should be at least P3 or P4 with a lot of harddisk space since you can literally fill up 250gb in two days with good grabs or junk depending on how you have set up the fishing software.

The PC should have at least 512mb ram to prevent discontiniuity of your downloads which may come about from interuptions from other programs trying to access the PC memory at the same time - and discontinuities can render some files useless (eg. program or RAR files)

Dvb card
There are quite a number out there like technotrend, Huappage, Avermedia etc. I use a SDMC chip based card and I have put together some resources in respect of my card and hence I can easily give practical help to anyone with my type of card.

Software.
I use Progdvb to watch TV on PC with the card. Progdvb has a module that allows you to fish but you won't be satisfied with the result. There are stand alone programs like Manna, Skynet, Turbograbber, Skygrabber etc.

I have only been successful with Turbograbber as a stand alone program. It is good for beginners but it uses up too much CPU power. Manna is acclaimed to be good -but i haven't had any successes with it yet. Skynet is my program of choice. There is a module for Progdvb which i have been using - it uses less CPU and can easily be configured.

any queries and concerns? wait till i am online again! grin

@all

Fishing,

all u need to grab data off a satellite is a dish, a dvb card and the necessary software.

now the kind of 'loot' u get depends on how you customize the fishing software ( i like the term fishing as opposed to grabbing, the latter sounds a bit brute grin). so u can very well avoid virus', mal-ware and what have u.

u can set up the software to pick up only movies, software etc,  or a combination of these.

now, since this is an offline activity (leeching to be precise) u have no say in what u get. so if at a certain point the one downloading aborts the activity well u're automatically affected --this can be annoying at times when it is RAR, ZIP or EXE files since they become unusable.

how fast can downloads be?

that varies, sometimes it takes me over eight hours for a 1.37gb movie file to complete and other times max. of three hours for the same size of film or program etc to complete.

the speed really depends on the one downloading, if they have a very fast connection then automatically also have.

Equipment

a decent P3 or P4 with a lot of harddisk space will do since you will easily fill up ur harddisk in no time (i have had to restrict the sort of files i grab since i am left with just a few gb left on my disk)

the kind of dvb card is really a matter of choice but it is not easy really setting some of them up (i took me a lot of time to really get mine to work)

Fishing rod ( grin)

there are about three programs - Manna, Skynet and skygrabber.

i have tried the three but i like Skynet better.

this Fishing thing will need a whole new thread but that is just a jist of what i do with my satellite dish - i don't use it for tv can't remember the last time i tuned into a tv channel lipsrsealed)

so well if u have a dvb card and u're interested in specfics - let me know and i will guide through the setup. if u don't have a dvb card and u're still interested drop me a mail and maybe we can work something out.

@benzion72

"While indolent is a curse to any culture your recomendation to start to read the whole post of more than a hundred people with various response is cumbersome unwholesome and time wasting."

honestly i don't know what to say to that shocked! is this a FAQ thread? cheesy let me give you an example of how i learn or let's say gather information from the net. if there is something i don't know i google it. and if by chance it pops up in a forum, i make it a point to read the thread from scratch until i get to the point where i think i have learnt enough and probably sieved through the chaff for the genuine stuff.

now to know what u can receive and what u can't depends on two things:

1. Geographical Location (the satellite beam coverage is our concern in this regard)
2. The size of the dish equipment in relation to the frequency u're after ie. the C or KU band.

this is where u google to know the basic differences between the C and Ku bands and then find out what u can really receive in our region. Literally there is a slim chance of receiving most satellite but that depends on how BIG UR BUDGET is.

there is a link in one of threads which points to a BLOG about the satellites with coverage within our region, i don't remeber the exact thread but it is in there somewhere so i guess the ball is in ur court. wink

one more thing, this is a FTA thread, so i guess there must be a thread for the Pay stuff as well. if u really ain't interested in FTA then i would advise u to get DSTV they have no real competition for now and u will surely get a lot of these channels we are picking up on the various satellites with different dishes with just one DISH. i guess that is a real life saver for the Non-DIYer.

So pls call ur local DSTV office if u want subscription stuff, maybe a forum member with knowledge in that regard might respond. smiley

@all

there sure way to hide secrets from "lazy folks" in this era is in websites. I can't believe that people do have access to the WWW and still want to be spoon fed shocked.

It is quite different when u need practical help to maybe install or point a dish at a satellite. But these 'newbie business' of failing to read the threads from the very beginning sure does retards progress and can be annoying! lipsrsealed

Anybody hearing me! Can we have a rule that says no questions asked until you have read through all the threads and probably 'googled' those things that u can't understand befor yelling out for HELP! dudesss,  cheesy

LET US make some concrete progress with these FTA thing.

What do u GUYS know about FISHING with satellites? grin.

Well after waiting for the free2view fiasco,  i decide i was going to use my setup on W3A for FISHING aka in other arenas, data Grabbing. it turns out there is a lot of SMUT (Bleep) on those links which for me is a disappointment. I need more entertaining 'loot' so i will be looking at other birds when i do make the time and probable fabricate a 3m dish for that Nilesat of a bird.
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by dvbguy: 1:52pm On Mar 19, 2008
@urfriend

I was bird watching the free2view transponder on W3a the whole of last weekend but no new channels poped up. could u pls give me the update on whats causing the delay, ie, if u know. i was at their site but it was of no help.

i am on that bird solely because it has been the only bird that has given me some success with offline data grabbing. i must admit though that the french channels like ARIANE, DIRECT 8, MBC 2, TVM and GO Africa do have some interesting programming. i think i would have to take evening classes for french. undecided
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by dvbguy: 4:04pm On Mar 03, 2008
nice to have a forum on this topic. i am from GH and i think the skies over the west african coastline are pretty dry and neglected when it comes to FTA (compared to other places eg europe cheesy). the one location u can pitch up a lot of this FTA stuff is on the C-Band Pas 7,10 but but then again u must understand hindi or one of 'em dialects to enjoy those channels.

u could turn to the ku-band on the same satellite and the absolutely not too free ETV is your option. I can't comment on Intelsat 902 at 62e since i haven't had any success with my 1.8m system. NSS 7 is no less interesting to me just as were my french lessons back in those days.

and the free stuff on Eutelsat W4 is wack cheesy. so i am planning, should i say saving to buy a bigger dish (or build one undecided, my desire for the free is so deep embarassed)

my current equipment are a dvb pci card for use with my pc, some stb's i have all scattered in my room.

but seriously if i don't get some funds soon to build 'em big dish, i might look into the options i have with my dvbcard on the not too free channels we have radiating us. i am like dude if i don't pay for the air that i breath now, why should i pay to see whats in the skies, it is already free anyway elsewhere.

show us some skillz guys could we move from FTA to some like keys, !
