@gadtor

I use the amiko shd-8900 alien .....

Downsides
1. the opera browser is crap not worth it, better stick to PC for proper browsing
2. the shd-8900 has no blindscan so crap as well.....i guess later versions the alien 2 resolved that
3. the spark os is a bit overrated......no content (apps) appropriate to our region....mostly russian or german and are all piecemeal videos...other stbs now
do youtube, picasa, weather, etc so nothing special there
4. awfully slow boot up time angry

Upside

1. I have only one thing that i use it for....the webtv and that requires decent broadband speeds......webtv is live streaming tv channels on the internet.....mostly crap channels but then some still give joy

hope my review is helpful....mind you it is amiko shd-8900 alien and not the alien 2 but not much difference from what I gather aside the blindscan and multiple tuners on the Amiko 2

FTA is not all that free - it takes time and a lot of financial outlays to realize that, so ingenuity and innovativeness  must be celebrated and rewarded. So yes, if he has found something that seems to work, he is under no obligation to release that info just yet - it could his break to fame and as such he must weigh his options ie. either to be a 'linux gnu' enthusiast who releases his find to all the FTA world for others to capitalize on it or go the way of Microsoft and make some bucks from it.

No one is to take offense if proof is not forthcoming after all if we all claim to be of inquiring minds, nothing stops us from going the extra mile to break the myth of CAN'T BE DONE. Ask yourself the basic question are we really sure there is even something called out of range footprint of a satellite (Fringe Signals)? Maybe there is and maybe there isn't. It all depends on the way you look at it and the apparatus you're working with. I am not a technical person but I don't have a shut mind either. Signals can be elusive if you are not using the right equipment and in the same vein, if you have the very best of equipment you can easily have in your reach those signals you 'THINK' are elusive.

Technological advances have come a long way and we shouldn't be found disbelieving without opening our minds and imagination to POSSIBILITIES.

In this world, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE - the good and the very bad, all comes about with just thinking!

nahh, me i don't belittle people - i see everybody as equals. Now you've just exhibited the very sentiments which led me to question why you love being in Ghana - an honest answer will do - is it becos things work here? - despite our intolerable nature!

now you will agree with me it takes a whole lot more than just dishes and LNB's to set up a DTH network - and 5000 pcs tvro equipment will not do scratch! - i wish you all the best in venture.

again I can strongly say for a fact that the vast majority of the dudes in the banks lack good business sense - being there or having the title of banker doesn't make them any wiser. A lot of banks have huge irrecoverable balances in their books - i am in the sector so i am well informed.

once again I wish you success - i look forward to more bird hunting as well from your network cool.

PS. good that you now have the specs - your supplier will happily supply the right equipment this time. take care - Peace n out!

"off topic"

I am a little perplexed as to why you would want to start a venture you have little knowledge of. Why do you like Ghana so much? I did a bit of a check on some of your posts and I realized (I am Ghanaian) you really do think less of us. Who are you trying to out-wit this time? - not everybody in this world is a dumb-as* dude.

"back to topic"

First of all you don't need partners. Pay a consultant to to advice you - me thinks you don't even know the various broadcasting standards out there - you need to be clear on what exactly you are up to. What do you plan to set up - terrestrial station or a DTH platform? if its the former, then I know for a fact that no license will be issued since for now GH will be using only two existing TV providers - makes your work simpler since they host your content for you for a fee. if it is the latter, then i guess the issue of "moving to other places" (as in extending coverage) will be a nonstarter dude. You can lease a transponder on Astra 2b gives you a good coverage over West Africa.

Then again who are we kidding? if the National regulator refused you a license then on what grounds where you even able to bring in the equipment in the first place? highly irregular - one needs a license to even own such stuff. what kind of test did they ran? - earth to satellite uplink or transmitter power rating? You don't need us telling you what the specs should be Bro. Ask the one who rejected them  grin.

OOops!  shocked I hope I didn't misfire! - did u say Channel (as in 1, singular - me scratching me head  ) what can you bring to the table in terms of variety? do you have any idea how much it costs to acquire content? (or lease a TP) bet you if it where that easy MultiTv would have a lot more variety than the repeat programmes we are stuck with. undecided.

Anyways not to sound like discouraging you - but you gave me little to work with. More information is needed. Set up a dummy website and give out the necessary information so we can better advise you or better still drop all the low down here. While you are at it do a bit of research on defunct GBS, not too sure of DAARSAT and Free2view -  they where all hope smashers! tongue - they had lots of channels or were planning to launch lots of channels! lol  cheesy - my guess is they forgot one critical thing - ie to keep costs from bungee jumping in their books  grin.

And for the banks who fail to conduct due diligence before doling out cash for all kinds of projects - my guess is we will forever have a United Africa financial crisis! lol!

My 1 cent - keep me posted and do hire professional people (if i know what you are up to maybe i can point you in the right direction on how to find them).

Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread of Free To Air Satellite TV (Part 2) by dvbguy: 12:29pm On Dec 04, 2008
@all

this thread has been pretty much dead for sometime now - i believe it was because we assumed we knew everything - not really giving in room for experiments!  the purpose of this thread i assume is to share knowledge, generate interest in technology and ultimately have the best and most varied form of entertainment (TV) for next to nothing - initial setup cost and the many hrs spent tuning is definitely not free!

Now ADEWEST, (God Bless the CHAP),  must have been laughing out in his head all these while because he realised how wrong the majority of us where and I bet he did have a lot to contemplate with before venturing out his knowledge/information - and guess what happens, he was 'rigthly' crucified. Honestly I admire the CHAP because he didn't give up (he really is in the right profession). I figure he saw it as an obligation to bring to light is knowlege otherwise - the forum was doomed. He did it for the greater good!

Now to my point! Most people do not know anything and wouldn't even bother to learn to get to know. Sure people come here for information to learn, laugh and earn some money. People have selfish and greedy tendencies but hushing information is no cure to that. If an installer comes round to learn something new, it benefits the customer and takes away from the PAYTV's ( I figure that is one of our satisfaction right - to wreck PAYTV's, and we can't do that sitting in our homes horning in the signals to ourselves! Just as they have agents, we must also have agents!), if a hobbyist comes in for information- it improves his/her hobby and if a PAYTV operator come around then I would say hardluck - they would either have to go and shoot out the birds or just go and lobby more (ban on equipment or something) for their selfish gains or just straight up come to terms with FTA, hacks & cracks and offer realistic services to those who can't afford the luxury of having a BUD in their house. Afterall PAYTV channels are just a compendium of FTA channels!

With the onset of this thread, everybody was a novice (you could verify from 'season1 ep1') but now alot of us have become good (not excellent) and migrating to forum, group or whatever for a somewhat 'advanced course in FTA' shouldn't even be considered. There should be no caucus or whatsoever. If this site has inadequacies and the greater number of us feel sensitive information like keys, patches, cracks etc. which constitutes an illegality can't be shared freely then the whole thread should be moved to one that does support those and I doubt if there is a site that condones such acts explicitly.

General information that goes to improve the thread and the hobbyist abilities shouldn't be censored and made available to only an elitist wing of members.

I think ADEWEST has come to put back some life into this thread lets give that opportunity and whatever we discover alongside we share for the GREATER GOOD. I suggest we disband the GGroup or well as an after thought - keep it for all the 'wrong things'. grin
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Official Thread of Free-To-Air Satellite TV (Part 1) by dvbguy: 11:30am On Sep 24, 2008
sometimes I think we are doomed forever as a 'race' - must everything be personalized? there is a vast amount of info out there and I admit it takes a while to digg 'em up but whatever be the case when someone comes up with something new on this forum, we are not to assume that it has been conclusively tried out and tested until we have done our own bit of research - I guess that is what I will call a fully fledged D.I.Y spirit.

Putting things together or hooking things up doesn't really make u knowledgeable or a good DIYer until you have a firm grasp of the concepts that underpin the project you desire to undertake - typical example most installers don't have any inkling into what they do, they just point and tune and it ends there for them but from what I have researched and what I do with my setup, I know that is just the starting point.

So guys STOP this "retard behaviour" - there is nothing novel on this forum that hasn't been discussed on other forums just take the pains to read more and "GOOOOOGLE" and when you "enlighten" yourself I bet you will save yourself unwarranted trips to unwarranted place. [sub][/sub]the truth is out there open your eyes y' all!  embarassed

does it support progdvb? from what i gather it is one of those hard to set up devices and there is no support on the Lightwave website for drivers - (ie. from the last time I checked).

are you the one selling them? if so will you be in the position (or can you get someone) to provide technical assistance to fellow members on how to set them up with progdvb with ease?

lets know.
TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 10:38am On Aug 07, 2008
@Gangsta101

I think u should buy a PC with modest specs - ie. speeds of 1.5 up, ram of 512 up and HDD of 40gb up.

Just buy a dvbworld PCI card and u really don't need any middlemen. You can place the order urself and if you have funds I would advise you buy about 5 - 10 since they cost around $22 each and shipping for ten is about $118 - this will help spread the cost per unit and you can sell the rest to other forum members - and it roughly takes about 3 weeks also. You can contact Kenne at dvb@hotmail.com

If the company you talked about can procure it for you cheaper then why not but do follow  Bodejohn's advice - buy a card that is supported by Progdvb otherwise you will have a heck of a time trying to set it up.

The breaks u experienced are usually because of low signal strength I have found out that the minimum signal strength u need on the data Channel is about 70% in progdvb on a normal receiver it should be about 60%

@bodejohn

any luck with the setup yet?

try turbograbber get it from this site hxxp://www.satnavigator.ru/page-id-116-a-dl.html.

it is based on the progdvb engine so make a copy of your modules folder and replace the modules folder in turbograbber with it after installation.

the default language is set to russian so change it by clicking on spanner icon on the menu - a box pops up with two tabs, the language option is on the 1st tab.

the 2nd tab contains options for engine types - choose the dvbengine

you should have a drop down device list - choose ur module. if u don't find your device listed, just pick one of the devices and go into the modules folder, then change the name of ur device to the one that u choose in the drop down list. then click on ok to save.

Next press F10 to set the provider information change the DiseqC to: 'None'
DiseqC_Streamreader to: 'None'

set the Transponder section to the data channel ie 12520 V 27500, FEC should be 'auto'

delete the current PIDs and copy the PIDs from ur skynet.ini doc and paste there. click on 'ok' to save.

now click on the play button on the menu to start grabbing.

pretty easy to use but consumes a lot of cpu power.

give it a try and let me know whilst I tinker about ur issue with the skynet setup.
TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 11:52am On Jul 31, 2008
this is what skynet looks like when 'fishing' is in progress smiley

TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 11:50am On Jul 31, 2008
@bodejohn
Please verify that u've created all the appropriate directories specified in the skynet.ini line
"incomplete=c:\temp\incomplete
temp=c:\temp\temp
ok=c:\temp\ok"

u're at liberty to change the names of the folders but it should correspond with what you have in skynet.ini

then select files to grab using the 'G' command - to experiment, select the extension 'jpg' which is a picture extension and set the min size to about 66k. you should immediately start grabbing pics. then take your time to set up other extensions and save it with the 'ctrl + S' command.

if the minimum size is big it will only grab big files and so you will have to be patient until someone is actually downloading such a file. so just use the minimum size for the 'jpg' to check if skynet is configured well to grab and also to verify that files are being written to the correct directories.

TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 3:54pm On Jul 29, 2008
@bodejohn

the regex.txt, regex.dat and skynet.ini can be found in the modules folder in the progdvb directory
TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 3:52pm On Jul 29, 2008
@bodejohn

replace the regex.txt, regex.dat and skynet.ini with my files. remember to edit -

"incomplete=c:\temp\incomplete
temp=c:\temp\temp
ok=c:\temp\ok"

the above lines to the correct folders - a line like this "c:\temp\incomplete" means i have a folder called 'temp' in directory c:\

and inside that folder (temp folder) there is another folder called 'incomplete'.

files being processed are stored in "c:\temp\temp"

when grabbing is complete they are stored in "c:\temp\ok"

and incomplete files can be stored in "c:\temp\incomplete" with the command "ctrl + i"

TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 5:53pm On Jul 28, 2008
@bodejohn
scan PIDS from 0-9000

do you have any decrypting plugins installed in progdvb eg. Vplug? or other programmes that consume a lot of memory or try to access the memory? this may be the cause of your discontinuities. what is the spec of ur PC?

also take note of the signal strength - as i indicated u need a signal strength of at least 60% on ur strong receiver and in progdvb it will shoot up to about 70% that will prevent discontinuities as well.

I promise to attach my regex files for you tomorrow - they define the popular file types available. and this is what the 'G' command picks up when u use that command.

Find the pic below and explanation demonstrating how to use the 'G' key

When u press the 'G' key the pic below appears at the right hand side in skynet. it is a list of pre-defined file extensions.

Use the arrow keys to move up, down, left or right from whereever the 'cursor' (marked with the black line in the pic)

activate a list with the '+' (shown by the first blue circle) or deactivate it with the '-'(minus)

the white circle indicates the minimum file size you have specified for download (use the '+' or '-' key to increase or decrease this value)

the blue circle to the extreme right indicates the maximum file size u want to download (increase or decrease this with the '+' or '-' key)

after selecting the file types and specifying their minimum and maximum sizes (very critical otherwise you would end up with junk, viruses etc)--

press 'Ctrl + S' to save ur settings

then press 'G' again to remove the file types list from that portion of the screen.

try and let me know the outcome

TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 11:49am On Jul 28, 2008
@bodejohn

"=12520000 H 39999000 A"

Oops! some cut and paste error on my part. Now I use the PID scanner in Progdvb - so I guess the PIDS u scanned will do just fine. Copy all of them to the section I indicated in the Skynet.ini file.

Once you can pick up the data channels - then you are on track. My card strangely works on both the H and V of that transponder. The only thing u should be worried about is ur signal strength. The minimum signal strength for a smooth operation for both Progdvb and Skynet should be 60% - I have a signal strength of 73-72% on that TP with my 1.8m.

Anything below that will be bring about breaks in the signal which may cause Progdvb to hang or crash and lead to discontinuities in your grabbing with Skynet.
TV/Movies / Re: Offline Downloading Or "fishing" by dvbguy: 5:53pm On Jul 24, 2008
@bodejohn
I use H in tuning in to the 12520 tp. Are you using the progdvb version i sent u? that is the only version that works for me. All other versions I have tried hang on startup.

also install progdvb in directory "C:\"

How to use Skynet.

the skynet program rans on a file called "streamreader" to kickstart the dvb equipment - think of it like an ignition key to your card or box. And there only a handful of these streamreaders that have been written for more popular cards or boxes and these are the works of enthusiats - not manufacturers.

I personally haven't any success with these standalone streamreaders that u can throw into the skynet folder which enables the program to start dvb device - hence I use the alternate route.

I use a skynet module in conjuction with progdvb. What this module does is it caputures the Transport Stream (ts) from progdvb and process it.

To use the module, just download it _hXXp://www.stvnn.ru/arhif/snm.exe and install - it will automatically install to the modules folder in program dvb.

The next stage is to go into the modules folder and look for a file named "skynet.ini" and edit these lines in the file:

incomplete=e:\temp\skynet\incomplete
temp=e:\temp\skynet\temp
ok=e:\temp\skynet\ok

- this is that path where the grab will be processed and stored so change it and create the necessary folders

#diseqc=POSITION_B
#diseqc=HIGH_BAND,HORIZONTAL,POSITION_B,OPTION_B

# LOW_BAND   HIGH_BAND
# VERTICAL   HORIZONTAL
# POSITION_A POSITION_B
# OPTION_A   OPTION_B

- this lines can be deleted completely since your will be using a single position. note '#' sign before them renders those commands inactive until they are removed so you might as well leave it, but I suggest you delete it.

# PlanetSky
tuner=11044000 H 39999000 A

- these line indicates the frequency, SR and FEC of the data TP so change them to their correct values in this case it will be 'tuner=12520000 H 39999000 A

pids=8192

- this is the vital part of the whole setup. PIDS = data traffic  smiley. 8192 is a universal PID - so I've read undecided, but it doesn't work for me. u can use these PIDS on the above transponder "pids=8190,4067,4111,4151"
they are a lot. I will check my file and post the rest later.

Now save the skynet.ini file and close it.

Start progdvb

Scan the tp 12520H SR 27500

go to services on menu on progdvb and click on skynet

a new window should open - skynet

Commands to skynet are done thru the keyboard!

type 'G' to get a list of the files that have been defined in the regex file for skynet

use '+' to activate the file types for grabbing and use the same '+'  to increase the sizes of files you want to grab and use '-' to reduce their size

use 'ctrl + S' to save changes made by the 'G' command

use 'S' to stop grabbing

use 'num keypad' to sort through download

use 'arrow keys' to show details of files being grabbed

use numbers '1-8' on keyboard to zoom in or zoom out files being grabbed

use 'ctrl + I' to send files to incomplete folders

use 'delete' to delete

use 'ctrl + r' to reload regex files

try out these and let me know of the outcome.

@bodejohn

1. download this version of progdvb and install
hXXp://www.stvnn.ru/arhif/ProgDVB%204[1].72.8%20Full%20Install.exe

2. then download the SKYNET module hXXp://www.stvnn.ru/arhif/snm.exe and install

now the critical thing to keep in mind is that not all dvbcards or boxes are compatible with 3rd party software since the manufacturers don't provide the necessary support for them. Have u ever used it before and what program is it running on currently? the boxes may look alike but chipsets may be different. does ur box have a name? and who is the manufacturer? let me know so that i can help.

@azeezbaba

Yes, u can subscribe to satellite internet service with the card eg. will be MWEB and have ur downloads via satellite (which is faster) and uploads via dial-up, ISDN etc.

Viruses
i haven't encountered any yet. the program i use (SKYNET) is highly configurable- it has a set of rules for various file types - so u can exclude programs that comes with cracks, keygens etc. and besides most of my downloads are movies. i have gotten some programs too but those are of little interest to me - exe and iso.

@justx24

that is unfamiliar waters for me. please google it and see. i believe u will come across something - there are a lot of resources out there. the only thing is majority are in russian so use google language tool to translate it and fight ur way through the translated version. grin

lets know of the outcome wink
