Eight months strike: Anambra to recruit doctors from
abroad


Following its inability to persuade doctors working in
state hospitals who have been on strike for eight
months to return to work, the Anambra State
Government has decided to recruit doctors from South
Africa, Ghana and India to fill the vacuum created by
the striking doctors. Sources said that the decision
was taken during a joint meeting between the
government and senior officials of the Ministry of
Health.

Only last week, some officials told journalists that the
government had exhausted all avenues for negotiations
with the striking doctors and had resolved that
recruiting doctors from foreign countries was the only
option left to government.

The officials felt that recruitment of foreign doctors
into the health sector would stem the tide of high rate
of infant deaths in the state, with over 80 infants
losing their ives since the doctors strike began in
February, this year.

An unconfirmed source disclosed that the state
government also plans to pay off all arears of the
doctors' emoluments before embarking on the
recruitment exercise, as a way of dispensing with the
services of the striking doctors.

Contacted, an executive member of the Nigerian
Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Anyaso, said the
decision of the state government to recruit foreign
doctors had been communicated to them some two
months ago, saying they were not disturbed with the
news.

He added: “We remain resolute on our stand. We are
waiting to see them act on their resolution. Do you
know how much it would cost them to pay the wage
bills of those foreign doctors, which we understand,
would be in hard currency? We are waiting for them.
Our plan B action would soon be announced.

“If the state government pays us half of what they will
pay the foreign doctors in hard currency there will be
no cause to go on strike.”
Doctors working in government hospitals in the state
are still on strike since February, this year, over the
non- implementation of consolidated salary structure,
which other state governments.
