BusinessRe: Work Begins On Onitsha Shoprite. by EASTSIDAZ: 9:46pm On Jun 30, 2013
Rossikk: Onitsha can comfortably hold 15 to 20 standard malls today. Or more.

There's a lot of money in that city. Middle class money that will jump at buying stuff from a mall rather than some open air market.

Also, the trick for small businesses wishing to enter this sector is to build small, but still meet the standards of a modern mall, ie have lifts, elevators, central AC, restaurants, security, parking etc. Such businesses will be able to capture a significant share of the middle class market... for instance those who live too far from the big mall, but still wish to have that 'experience' of sophisticated retail.
15-20 Malls? That mean our major cities are hugely under utitlized. Maybe by the time Shoprite finishes building the Mall Onitsha boys will take a cue from that. It will further revolutionize the market system to indoor trading.
BusinessRe: Work Begins On Onitsha Shoprite. by EASTSIDAZ: 3:14pm On Jun 30, 2013
Rossikk: It's only a matter of time before a Nigerian conglomerate or two forms its own 'Shoprite'. This same thing happened in India 15 years ago when western shopping giants moved in there, setting up modern retail facilities, chains, malls etc. Today in India most big cities have at least 20 MALLS, and most of those malls are indigenously owned and are home to locally established retail chains.

So all Shoprite has done in Nigeria is come in with a new standard. They upped the level for retail. It is now left to Nigerian entrepreneurs to take up the baton. There's enough room for everyone, as the modern retail sector in Nigeria is still in its infancy. The middle class is expanding, and they will need MORE of such upscale facilities. Do you know that Johannesburg has over 40 malls? Pretoria has about 30. Cape Town 15. So we've barely started in Nigeria.
This got me shivering that Nigeria is merely a sleeping all these time.

You have said it all, part of the reason I welcome this Malls is that it will change our mentality about market place and introduce novel ideas of shopping in Malls and indoor markets.

It will actually enlighten our business men to copy this mode of transacting in the 21st century, because am not sure there is any open market in Europe and America even in South Africa. Although of recent shopping plazas (Emeka Offor Plazas) are springing up within and around main market Onitsha.

I expect Onitsha big boys to start thinking now how to copy this, because as matter of fact Onitsha is hugely untapped in that people come from all over the country and beyond to shop in the city.
BusinessRe: Work Begins On Onitsha Shoprite. by EASTSIDAZ: 2:46pm On Jun 30, 2013
KenGali: The article states it is a PPP project: meaning the state has a contribution to the funding. The other firms you mentioned are all operating or expanding new economic sectors. ShopRight is talking of commerce which is our main area of comparative advantage. I commend Obi for his achievements, but support for investors should also be strategic. If you are supporting someone to compete with your local players, you must be giving even greater support to your local players to ensure they do not die.
You are right, but I think PPP arrangement is what is ruling the world economy of today. At least where a state has some level of commitment in the entire project to enable it have employment quota purely for its people in the scheme of things. Meaning that by this PPP idea some percent of the jobs will be reserved strictly for the Anambra people.

Well I still blame our business men to large extent who have refused to come up with such a huge idea in the first place. Am sure if they had done that government would have keyed into it to further develop and enhance it, but they were okay with there level of operation. I equally learnt that they are going to build two more Malls: in Awka and Nnewi. So our business people should brace up. grin
BusinessRe: Work Begins On Onitsha Shoprite. by EASTSIDAZ: 2:08pm On Jun 30, 2013
KenGali: My dear, When looking for foreign investors, it makes sense to look at investors who will open or invest in new sectors of your economy. Or failing Sectors of your economy. (Looking at the Auto industry in Britain for example). When you aid foreigners to take over existing areas of comparative advantage, you are not creating any new value. Rather wealth is changing hands.

Ask yourself, whose needs will ShopRight serve?? Who is currently serving this need (our petty traders). When the wealth/market changes hands you end up putting a lot of low skilled and uneducated people out of jobs and income. In place you will employ a few literate people to do the jobs, and then repatriate profits they use to earn back to South Africa. Who is loosing?
If ShopRight came on their own to site in Onitsha with out state backing and fund, I will not bother, they will have to compete with local traders. But can you imagine what Obi's involvement has done for their publicity alone, before talking of funding for the mall.
Dearie..I have not read anywhere that Anambra is putting down a penny in all this. What I know is that Obi is creating enabling environment for them to thrive by doing a dual carriageway that will equally serve the 5star hotel, ICC and general hospital.

The same thing Obi has done for Sabmiller, Orient, Juhel, Orange drug, chrisoral even chikason group. Obi personally brought GEJ to commission all the above companies to give it govt backing.

Obi industrialization drive is all embracing for any investor coming to the state.

Presently Obi is doing good number of roads at Otuocha areas where pharmaceutical giant Emzor is building the largest drug plant in W.Africa.

Obi is ready to do same for any genuine investor and that is why investors are invading the state due to govt friendly industrialization policy masterplan.

In all these equations and calculations where is the clown okorosha?

Can you imagine they are not even talking of SE running mate of which the clown would have some chances. Which shows that okorosha has been warming their seats all this while. Lmao

Nwokem start coming home cos this people have shown you again that you are not a factor that they do not reckon on you. I know that APGA and Obi will be pumping champagne over your being dead politically. Hahahahah

Ngige start coming home while you still have some room.

^^^On the bolded: if you're waiting for Peter Obi to act on this brilliant idea of yours (something he should have done if he had good economic advisers, without KenGali having to suggest it on nairaland), then you go wait tire! It's this 'not thinking out of the box'......not taking bold new economic decisions that could draw on the unique nature of Anambra state......these are part of the problems i have with governance in that state.
As much as I agree with you on our people opening such a gigantic facilities, I still believe that foriegn investors coming are indirectly pumping their own resources in Anambra economy. They will equally add more jobs in the system and above all stir up economic dynamism and reframe the whole mode of doing business. Anambra as a capitalist state welcomes all investors just like they did to Orient petroleum, Sabmiller, Chrisoral Group, Orange drug, Emzor Pharm, Juhel Pharm etc. We want high level economic vibrancy.

The state has been so unlucky with leaders since 1999. Udenwa was a dundee, ohakin was a 419 kingpin and a comedian and now okorosha is another great comedian,a clown, potbellied, talkative and clueless as to what governance is about.

Shoprite is mainly a night business and onitsha does nt hv night life. i wonder how it'll thrive.
Its not true. Commercial areas does not have nite life just like in other major Nigerian cities. But in the core residential areas more especially high brow areas of GRA, American qtrs, Fed Housing, Omagba phase 1&2 even up to Limca road there is bubbling nite life. Awka road down to Park Road-GRA where the hotel and Convention Center, Shoprite etc are situated are always busy till dawn, I saw it myself.

Chillypelly: In making arguements, i expect you to be creative in convincing me cos you are becoming boring by the day. Your likes make me believe we still have educated illiterates ie if you are a standard six holder. It is only in anambra that you hear the voice of an old woman and in shock see a mature man to the full glare of tv viewers as the governor. Most remarkably you always see him distributing ambulances as dividends of democracy, the best may be the distribution of cheques for missionary hospitals to build morgues. Its okay i'm happy for you, atleast you can now buy your cabin biscuit in shoppite.

Btw I AM NOT ABAGWORO... Be guided.
Thought you are reasonal, you are actually not different from pauperized imo people I see everyday begging for food. Lol

Its only you that is praising that clueless called okorosha. The guy is presently running imo state into pit toilet. Imo state is the only SE state that does not have other igbos resident in it, but come to Onitsha your people have taken greater part of it, same thing is happening in Enugu and Abia. But nobody goes to imo state to do anything except to pass there to fvck una unmarriageable girls which is the only export out of yor forsaken state.

Imo state is heavily indebted with huge loans which your clownish gov is using to service tinubu and his hausa masters.

Okorosha is a bully who has continued to owe contractors, all the roads are abandoned. Since that clown became gov he has not completed any project. Rather he is busy strugling for seat with Obi's aide. Your okorosha should go to Anambra and understudy Obi on what governance is about. 1/3 of imo population have invaded Onitsha for their economic survival while their gov is busy dancing azonto with criminals as tinubu.

It's obvious that you cannot see beyond your nose. When people in the know talk about the negative impact of such super stores on mom and pop stores, it does not mean their total disappearance. Some may close up, while others may be trudging along. And for those that disappeared, you may never get to hear about it, but that does not mean that that never happened. Anybody with some modicum of understanding will agree with my postulations on the negative impact of such super stores on the micro economy of a given place. Unfortunately, there will always be idiots like you, that sees anything from the western world as a yard stick for measuring development. The government should focus more on attracting investments from foreign manufacturers of goods and services, instead of attracting firms that will dump all manner of finished foreign products on us.

I have said my piece, you can go ahead and exhibit your ignorance the more. I'm done replying you, i'm too big a fish to honor you with further replies.
Too big a fish, while your fish-mates are somewhere else you are here jumping from one forum to another. Your type are jobless and needs economic rescue, no wonder you are scared of ever doing anything in your life. Come we still have some openings in our establishment.

Tell me one thing that does not have an implication whether negative or positive? Even while you are seated there yapping it has its own negative implications. You are not an Anambran and you will never accept you in our midst, go to your poor state and lecture your poor people about that. We are too sophisticated for your type.

Its people that you that are down and have refused to stand standard up. Life in itself is a risk, for you to make it to another economic level it requires a risk also. So leave the Shoprite for us. As I said earlier Onitsha or Anambra economy does not depend on the civil servant's salaries in Awka. It depends largely on people that come from far away states and countries to shop in Onitsha.
BusinessRe: Work Begins On Onitsha Shoprite. by EASTSIDAZ: 7:09pm On Jun 29, 2013
Chillypelly: I see you as the true anambra son. How come Peter Obi suddenly started an 8 floors hotel, an ICC, a shopping mall and road construction in anambra at the 11th hour of his wasted 8 years. Self deci is worst than suicide. I will urge the next governor of anambra to with ideas in the clon of Prof. Soludos' to move to enugu and akwa ibom for lessons on development. We progressive Igbo expect the next governor to develop the greater anambra that will transform the state to a one city state, dualize and the entries into awka and nnewi and collaborate with networth citizens of anambra for a robust investment drive.
Conversely those state should come and borrow ANIDS development plan in Anambra. Development is beyond road painting and planting grass. AK citizens with all the oil money are still my cook and gateman, so much poverty in the face of huge allocation. As for Enugu state the state is about 15percent urban and 85percent rural. The gov has succeeded in working on only 15percent of the state for 6yrs.

Obi is an all rounder working on the 177 communities and three major cities of Awka , Onitsha and Nnewi at the same time. Its a feat worthy of emulation.

na U go tire:
U guys are jokers. What is good about having a super store in a locality? There's nothing good about that, rather, there's everything bad about it. For your information, the presence of Shoprite in Onitsha will definitely lead to the death of so many mom and pop shops within Onitsha and beyond. Shoprite basically sells the same type of products as these mom and pop stores, and obviously, when people are faced with the choice of shopping at Shoprite or at a mom and pop's, they will go for the former. It is never good for the local economy and that's why you see some county governments in the western world resist the siting of these super marts in their locale.
Shut u my friend! Has it killed Lagos economy? Some of you reason from anu.s.

The coming of Shoprite in the economic nerve center of SE- Onitsha is more than a welcome development becos it will further make room for competition and general growth of economy. The people that shop in the city of Onitsha are mostly people that come from quite distant states and in most cases other African countries. Making the city another Dubai of Africa.

The vibrancy of Onitsha economy does not depend on residents only or civil servants in Awka. Over 75percent of funds that flows into Onitsha comes from outside of the state.

Keep whinning and crying out bitterness and envy because another Shoprite is coming to Awka apart from the ongoing construction of the Ikenga Shopping Mall also in Awka. Shoprite is equally spreading to Nnewi too.
