Barely 24 hours Another domestic carrier, Aero Contractors Airlines, suspended operations, another airline, First Nation Airlines, on Thursday shut down its operations, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has said. Aero Contractors Airlines, Nigeria’s second largest commercial carrier, announced an indefinite suspension of its scheduled flight services and its staff with effect from Thursday, September 1, 2016. The Director-General of the NCAA, Capt. Muhtar Usman, explained that the decision was taken in order to ensure that the airline carried out the required maintenance of its aircraft. Usman, however, refuted claims that some of the domestic airlines were winding down their operations regardless of the fact that they had suspended flight services. In a statement issued by the NCAA on Thursday and signed by its DG, it said, “The First Nation Airlines on its part is in the middle of an Engine Replacement Programme for one of its aircrafts. Another aircraft is due for mandatory maintenance as allowed by the regulatory authority. “In these circumstances, these airlines clearly cannot continue to undertake schedule operations, hence the inevitable recourse to self regulatory suspension.” Usman insisted that the domestic carriers had not wound down their operations, but were “merely suspending their operations temporarily to enable them undertake certain operational overhaul and strengthen their overall operational outlay.” http://leadership.ng/breaking-news/548801/breaking-another-airline-first-nation-shuts-down-operations |

Akure-A leading governorship aspirant of the All Progressive Congress APC in Ondo state, Dr Olusegun Abraham Saturday alleged that his colleagues that were not sure of their chances had “kidnapped” delegates. He spoke while featuring on a personality programme of Adaba FM station in Akure. According to him out of their desperation, some aspirants invited some delegates to a meeting but later held them hostage. “These delegates who never knew the intention of the desperate aspirants went for the meeting but only to be confined and never allowed to go home’, he said. Abraham lashed his co-aspirants Rotimi Akeredolu for his comment against the National Leader of the party, Bola Tinubu and described his comment as unfortunate and an ungrateful act. Akeredolu had few days ago on the state Radio station said that it was not Tinubu that made him the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate in the governorship election held in 2012. He also said that Tinubu had lost his national leadership of the party by endorsing an aspirant ahead of the forthcoming APC primary. Abraham described the statement as an act of disrespect to one’s benefactor. “Without our National Leader, President Buhammadu Buhari would not have won the ticket of the APC in 2015 and he would not have become the president of Nigeria. “The National Leader was being accused of imposing me, I was not imposed. Endorsement is different from imposition. Those who regarded the two as the same do not what they were saying. “The National Leader only said I am a preferred aspirant that can deliver the state for APC in the coming election. “There is still going to be primary election and delegates know who they are going to vote for and who can win election for the APC. “I have met the delegates and they have assured me that they are for me. If we hold the primary election today, I shall have nothing less than 85 per cent of their votes”, While saying that he supported the party’s candidate in 2012 election, Abraham pointed out that he expected that he would enjoy the same treatment from other aspirants now that he had been endorsed. The aspirant advised the delegates to be careful of empty promises so they are not disappointed. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/08/gov-aspirants-kidnap-delegates-ahead-ondo-apc-primaries-abraham/ |
Students writing Mathematics in the 2016 General Certificate Examinations (GCE) of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) slated for September 10 in Edo State may be moved to neighbouring states to write the paper, Sunday Tribune has gathered. The option is one of the few on the table following the clash in the timetables for the conduct of governorship election in Edo State and that of Mathematics paper in the examination as released by WAEC. In order to resolve the conundrum, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), officials of WAEC and security agencies in Edo State have been meeting but with no agreement reached yet. Speaking on the issue, spokesman of the Edo State Police Command, DSP Theodore Okafor, said the matter was extensively discussed when the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operation, Joshak Habila, visited the state police command on Thursday. He said at a meeting which had in attendance the visiting DIG, state Police Commissioner, Chris Ezike, and officials of INEC and WAEC, the DIG made it clear to WAEC officials that the police was not disposed to having the election and examination the same day as the conduct of the examination may jeopardise security that was being put in place for the election. “The DIG spoke on the issue when he visited, and WAEC (officials) asked him what they needed to do. One thing is how come WAEC did not address the issue with their national headquarters in Ghana since the election date was fixed for September 10? “There was no conclusion per se (during the meeting). The DIG asked them why not make arrangements to move the students to nearby states because there is no way the police can guarantee (the WAEC examination) as election will restrict movement. “The DIG said, on his own, he cannot guarantee that examination will hold that day and that they (WAEC) should go and do their homework and see if students could be moved to neighbouring states. “He said it was impossible as it amounts to giving police double duty that day. He said criminals could infiltrate Edo and cause problems. “Election and examination cannot take place on the same day because examination means movement and we cannot know the people moving around that day,” he said. Speaking on the clash of the timetables, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo State, Sam Olumekun, disclosed that INEC was not considering shifting the election because of the WAEC examination and that the examination body has been advised to explore avenues to conducting the paper. “For us, we are doing election that day and the whole country is aware of that. We have met with WAEC and we have given them some advice. “We don’t know exactly how they are going to tackle it but elections will certainly hold. I can only comment on election and not examinations. “We will hold election on the 10th (September). They (WAEC) have met with the security agencies, the DIG of Police and INEC commissioners. “They offered them some advice. I sympathise with them because the examination is an international examination. We have offered them some concession and we hope they will take a decision.” Asked if INEC could shift ground, he said: “that INEC should shift ground, how? I’m talking about 1.9 million Edo citizens, who are qualified to vote. The total figure of students writing the examination in Edo is about 122,000.” In a reaction, Edo State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Orbih, said his party was not bothered about a likely change to the election, saying “anytime the election is conducted, we are certain of victory.” Also speaking, the publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Godwin Erhahon, said “whatever INEC asked us to do and whenever they asked us to go for the election, we are okay.” Meanwhile, there are also fears that the September 10 date may clash with this year’s Sallah celebrations which is further compounding the anxiety among politicians in the state. http://tribuneonlineng.com/students-politicians-face-uncertainty-edo-election/ |
Commercial activities in Akure, the Ondo state capital, was on Thursday disrupted following a clash between members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who are loyal to the state chairman of the party, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke and some aggrieved members who want to take over the office. The secretariat, which is located along the ever busy Oyemekun road, became deserted as shop owners, passersby and motorists ran for their lives, as the groups exchanged gun shots. Since Tuesday, APC office has witnessed unrest following an invasion of some members under the aegis of ‘Movement against Imposition’, who sealed off the office. The group, which quickly sacked Kekemeke and also set up a factional Executives led by Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, accused Kekemeke of anti-party activities, manipulation of delegates’ list for the primary election and attempt to impose a particular aspirant as candidate, among others. Kekemeke’s men were said to have reopened the Secretariat on Wednesday by chasing away those aggrieved members. The situation took another twist on Thursday when the aggrieved members reinforced to the party secretariat but were repelled, as those loyal to the party chairman allegedly exchanged gun shots with their opposition by shooting sporadically. Normalcy was returned when security operatives led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edward Ajogun, stormed the scene and chased away the miscreants. Kekemeke later arrived the party secretariat with his Secretary, Rotimi Raham and the Central Senatorial Chairman, Adegboyega Adedipe to address reporters. The Chairman urged the Saka Yusuf-led executive members to retrace their step and return to his fold and work for the party. He alleged that those behind the crisis are those who believe that their governorship ambition is threatened. Kekemeke assured the aspirants, party members and delegates on the primary election that the list of delegates to be used would be as produced by the Femi Pedro Congress Committee and as had been amended by the Chief Aro Lambo Congress Appeal Committee. He insisted that the party primary election, slated for August 27, would be conducted by the national headquarters of the party. He added that the process involved sales of forms, through screening, to the appointment of officials; from issuance of delegates list, through the conduct of the primary election to the announcement of results. He said, “as for endorsement, it should be clear to all by now that “endorsement is not synonymous with imposition”. It has been sufficiently explained that endorsement is consistent and compatible with best democratic practices even in the most advanced democracies and does not in any way impair free, fair and transparent primaries. “My view is that since all the delegates are known by all, being officials of the party at various level, let endorsement contend with endorsement, mobilization with mobilization, propaganda with propaganda, vision with vision, logistics with logistics, influence with influence and let the delegates speak. “It is however sad that the way and manner some protesters are carrying on, is suggestive of the familiar practice of intending decampees from their party to weaken their party, demonise their party leaders, create imaginary division, romance the opposition and cry wolf, when there is none. “This is moreso when a good numbers of these Facebook activities have done so to their previous parties. I urge party members whose only goal is winning the November 26, governorship election to be vigilant.” http://ondotv.com.ng/2016/08/18/ondo2016-shooting-at-ondo-apc-secretariat-as-party-crisis-deepens/ |
With two weeks to the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, HAKEEM GBADAMOSI, gives an insight into the ongoing permutations in the various caucuses in the party. The preparation for 2016 governorship election in Ondo State has started gathering momentum already. But as the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary approaches, many indigenes – both at home and abroad – are indeed apprehensive about having “the right candidate” flag the party’s banner. This apprehension is not unfounded considering that more than 50 aspirants, including one female, are jostling for the party’s ticket – even though not all have obtained the nomination forms. And the need to effectively harmonise and manage these diverse interests is key to the party’s success in the next race. The array of political gladiators jostling for delegates’ votes remain perhaps the biggest hurdle for the APC in the state because many indigenes, indeed party loyalists, share the view that the November 26, 2016 election could be won or lost majorly based on who eventually would bear the party’s flag at last. A public affair analyst from the state, Olusola Akinkunmi argued that the process through the APC candidate “emerges is critical to the party’s victory.” He thus referred to the politics of 2012 election. He said: “ACN could have done better in the 2012 elections but for the poor management of the candidate selection process and the electoral campaign which got the candidate fighting on several fronts. In 2012, there were more than 20 aspirants and it was difficult selecting one since the party at the time decided against conducting primary election. Akinkunmi opined that “selecting a candidate should have been the headache of the delegates but party leaders decided it was their headache. Therefore, the process and factors that led to the emergence of the candidate did not reflect the pulse of the people and it made the election a bit easier for the incumbent whose popularity was already ebbing towards the red zone.” “If those two mistakes are corrected – that is ensure emergence of candidate in a rancour free manner and a well managed campaign process – the party can coast home to victory,” said Akinkunmi who believes that both Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and Dr Olusegun Abraham, two foremost aspirants in 2012, still ticked all the boxes as the “right candidate.” According to a preponderance of opinions across the state, there are perhaps five leading aspirants at the moment, including Akeredolu and Abraham. The three others are Professor Ajayi Borroface and Senator Tayo Alasoadura, the senators representing Ondo North and Central senatorial districts respectively and Olusola Oke, a frontline politician in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose defection to the APC was forced by the incumbent Governor Mimiko’s defection to the PDP. The political exposures of the two senators and Oke however appear to be their albatross in the public opinion. A range of views said the APC should go for a technocrat instead of a typical politician because the incumbent, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has been a typical representative of traditional politicians “promise and fail” campaign. “If you look at states where technocrats are in charge as governors in Nigeria, you will see the marked difference compared to states where typical politicians are in charge. Despite the huge resources in the state, it is one of the least developed in Nigeria, it is therefore a no no for another traditional politician to take over” said a civil servant, Akeem Adekunle. This view may likely be a detrimental factor to the APC should either of Boroffice or Alasoadura emerge as its candidate. The former is a long term ally of President Obasanjo and many consider him culpable in the scandal that trailed the two space satellites launched during Obasanjo’s tenure. The later was fingered as the prime suspect for ACN’s loss in 2012, for failing to properly utilize mobilization fund. Some party loyalists believe it would be more honourable for Mr. Akeredolu to reciprocate Mr. Abraham’s gesture in 2012 by “stepping down” for him. Mr. Abraham was one of the three final aspirants considered for the party’s candidacy in 2012 and he agreed to step down for the renowned lawyer. Others called for support for the only female candidate among them, Jumoke Anifowoshe, the daughter of Chief Ajasin. But apart from the gender factor, there is little else that Anifowoshe has going for her. Having served as a commissioner and party chairperson in the state, opinions favoured Abraham who has always sacrificed personal ambition for the overall interest of the party. Indeed, a recount Mr Abraham’s politics in Ondo State reveals a narrative of a disciplined life “propelled by a heart to serve.” These two combinations are currently hot on the lips of many residents of the state who are eagerly weighing in on the next governor of the state among many aspirants. Many politicians in the state still refer to the 1999 episode when he opted not to serve in an administration that he helped to establish. Former Governor of Ondo State, late Chief Adebayo Adefarati considered him for a commissioner appointment in his administration between 1999 and 2003. Such was Abraham’s contribution to the campaign of the Alliance for Democracy’s candidate that he was deservingly offered the appointment. However, Abraham preferred to return to his businesses after the election and declined the offer. He would later accept Adefarati’s offer as the chairman of the then moribund Owena Hotel. Within months, the hotel went from being indebted to being profitable and while Abraham served in that position, he never collected a kobo as salary. This quintessential record of voluntary service in government is rare now but it was commonplace at a time, particularly in Southwest Nigeria, the bastion of progressive politics. It was commonplace for politicians to leave office only with the title of office, still retaining the same social status before their appointments. Some, like the second republic governor of Ondo State, Chief Adekunle Ajasin, even left office poorer than they went in. For voluntarily serving to turn around the fortune of Owena Hotel, Abraham is seen as the archetypal progressive politician that Southwest Nigeria was known for – perhaps he represents the last generation of that political philosophy, many opined. For all of his active partisan political experience, his activities have always been geared towards building the common good, against the dictate of modern day politicians’ proclivity for feathering personal nest. In deciding the election of principal officers of the National Assembly, the APC jettisoned zoning principle, even though it was stridently canvassed by different quarters as the best factor for apportioning legislative offices. Since the zoning principle is not as cardinal as it is in the PDP, therefore, there is no hope that the party will consider it as a factor in deciding the Ondo gubernatorial race. However, majority of Ondo residents and even some aspirants are of the view that zoning is already an “unspoken rule” in the political history of the state, with each senatorial district taking turn to produce the governor since 1999. Some are therefore of the view that the party may burn its finger, as it did during the National Assembly election, if it goes against zoning principle.

TWO Nigerians are among 10 wanted fraudsters in the United Kingdom (UK), according to a list published on Tuesday by City of London Police and the National Crime Agency. The 10 wanted fraudsters were linked to over £20 million worth of fraudulent acts in the UK and abroad. Forty-one-year-old Bayo Lawrence Anoworin is wanted by Lincolnshire Police in connection with fraud offences and money laundering. Anoworin was alleged to have been part of an organised crime group that defrauded a number of NHS Trusts in the UK and Guernsey. The scam reportedly earned them a total of £12 million and they laundered the money between January 1, 2011 and July 31, 2012. Anoworin was arrested in November 2012, but he disappeared into thin air after being granted bail. Alexia Thomas, a 43-year-old female, allegedly “supplied false immigration documents to people wanting to become British citizens.” According to the publication, Thomas, who operated online, claimed to be a professor and sold documents for around £300 each. Her false identities include Elizabeth or Lizzy with the surnames Henz, Ikuwe-Henz, Iheyen, Ikue-Henz, Ihenyue, Ikwue, Herz and Ihenyen. Thomas has also used the following names: Professor Thomas, Professor Summers, Martha Peterson and Alexia Bridget. Donald Toon, director of the NCA’s economic crime command, said the UK loses “more than £190 billion annually” from fraud. |
