Nairaland GeneralFamily Seeks Gov, CP Agbonika Intervention, Over Alleged Threat To Life by Easy4real10(op): 1:01pm On Apr 29, 2025
...Ex-Commissioner denies allegation, insists bike a donation, not gift

By Easy Ekoyatah

The family of Mr. Odutayo Taju of Sobe Community in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State has appealed to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Edo Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, member representing Owan Federal Constituency and the Edo State Police Commissioner, CP Monday Agbonika over a case of harassment, intimidation, threats and conduct likely to lead to breach of public peace and political unrest allegedly by former Edo State Commissioner of Arts, Culture and Tourism, Mr. McDonald Obasuke.

This is contained in a petition by Mr. Odutayo Taju through his counsel K. Osamwonyi Agbonlahor Esq and addressed to the Edo State Police Commissioner.

The petitioner Odutayo Taju who is self-employed and a politician in Sobe Community alleged that his life is under threat since after he received a brand new motorcycle that was gifted to him by McDonald Obasuke by reason of his loyalty.

The counsel said trouble started when the petitioner refused “Mr. McDonald Obasuke" bid to force him to make a choice to join him in his new political party of which, he (petitioner) refused in the exercise of his right to associate as enshrined in the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

"Mr. Odutayo Taju, who is self-employed and a politician in Sobe Community, has diligently and loyally worked with notable politicians in his locality, including Mr. McDonald Obasuke, while they were both in the same political party and his loyalty to him, was unprecedented as the record are still there and obvious to even the blind in Sobe, Owan West LGA

“It was Odutayo Taju’s dedication, selflessness, and loyalty to Mr. McDonald Obasuke gave him a brand new motorcycle some years ago while they were both under one political party, and Taju served him meritoriously, which all and Sundry in Owan West can attest to.

“There is a video clip of the presentation of the brand new motorcycle from Mr. McDonald Obasuke, through one of his aids to our client and was warmly cheered by other party faithful as witnesses.

“The brand new motorcycle that was gifted to Odutayo Taju absolutely by McDonald Obasuke by reason of his loyally was clearly stated at the presentation of the brand new motorcycle to be a gift (Free of Charge - F.O.C.) and nothing whatsoever was said at that point that it would be taken and/or retrieved from him but it was an express gift and the ownership of the said brand new motorcycle passed absolutely to Taju upon presentation.

“To our greatest dismay, McDonald Obasuke suddenly made a U-turn and started to harass, intimidate, and threaten our client that he should return the motorcycle which he absolutely gifted to him some time undisturbed.

“To make matter worse, Mr. McDonald Obasuke resorted to the use of the policemen at Sobe Division to harass and he made falsehood against our client (Mr. Odutayo Teju) who was then arrested on the 6th of April, 2025, on the falsehood that the bike was never a gift and Taju was detained until the Divisional Police Officer in Sobe who upon thorough investigation, discovered that the said motorcycle was an absolute gift to our client haven seen the video clip, and our client was released.”

Going further, the said “Mr. McDonald Obasuke has vowed to continue to harass and intimidate our client (Taju) and in a bid to force him to make a choice to join him in his new political party of which, him refused in the exercise of his right to associate as enshrined in the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria. Mr. Obasuke on seeing that the DPO at Sobe acted in good faith and professionally, he went ahead to Area Command at Igarra, Akoko-Edo where he has a contact and our client was invited over the same motorcycle he got as a gift. Hence, we are appealing to Governor Okpebholo and CP Agbonika.

“In view of the above, we humbly urge Your Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo and CP Monday Agbonika, to use your good offices to intervene in this case of oppression, harassment, intimidation and threats to our client (Mr. Odutayo Taju) and caution Mr. McDonald Obasuke as his conduct is likely to lead to breach of public peace and political unrest in Sobe Community in Owan West Local Government Area of the State if no urgent steps are taken to bring him to book and allow justice take its full course.

Reacting via telephone on the allegation against him, Mr. McDonald Obasuke said that the motorcycle in question was never an absolute gift to Odutayo Taju but for the sole purpose of using the bike for campaign activities for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sobe.

He said, “I did not give to Taju any bike. I bought four bikes for four of them. The others are still with us. The bike was for the sole purpose of campaigning for our party - APC in all the nook and cranny of Sobe Community. There are witnesses to the facts.

“If you gift a man a particular item, are you not sure legally you will transfer title to such person?

“Four bikes were given out that particular day. Those four bikes they had the inscription donated by McDonald Obasuke on them. The receipt bears my name. It was for the purpose of campaigning for APC. I’m ready to go to court to retrieve the bike from him if the need be.”

The Centre for Childcare and Youth Development (CCYD) is located at Uromi, the administrative headquarters of Esan North-East local government area of Edo State.

Prof. Abhuere, has also appealed to his personal friends, lovers of education, Child Care, Youth Development & Empowerment, Governments at all levels, House of Assembly members and National Assembly members, Donor Agencies, kind hearted Nigerians both home and in diaspora, charitable organizations to come to his aid to enable him re-roof his educational Center destroyed by rainstorm at Uromi.

Prof. Abhuere appeals for either cash or kind in re- roofing the great edifice that has been turned into ruins by the rainstorm which hit the administrative headquarters of his educational and youth development skill acquisition Center at Uromi.

"Roofing sheets, electricity wires, poles, nails, doors and windows are required in order to bring back to life the CCYD building that once stood tall and sprawling at the Centre at Uromi."

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Prof. John Abhuere stated that on the 6th of April, 2025, there was heavy rainfall and winds storms in Uromi that destroyed many houses including CCYD Multipurpose Hall.

According to him, “Our visit to Uromi town revealed that generally a great havoc was wreaked the community and the damage to the CCYD Complex in particular has been extensive and greatly devastating. We are disoriented to say the least."

“We need to start reconstruction or repair with re-roofing but lack the huge resources required to do so and that is what is essentially holding us back. We spent over six million naira in roofing the hall two years ago. And it is very frightening to imagine what it would cost to reroof today. Our rough estimate is about N10m (ten million Naira only).

“The urgent assistance in re-roofing the hall will enable our students to write their forthcoming examinations.”

Nairaland GeneralCommunity Youths' Leader Debunks Alleged Overstay In Office by Easy4real10(op): 5:58am On Apr 17, 2025
...Says he was made youths' leader 2 years ago by Odionwere, Community Elders

By Easy Ekoyatah

The Youths' Leader (Okaighele) of Orior Ozolua Community in Uhunwonde local government area of Edo State, Egharevba Osasere has debunked the allegations by a group of agitators calling for his removal after allegedly holding the position for 17 years, saying he was made the Okaighele in 2023 by the Odionwere.

Recall that a group of people with different placards carrying agitators on Monday 14th April, 2025 stormed the Edo State secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), raised various allegations against Osasere and called for his removal as the Okaighele of Orior Ozolua Community.

In reaction, Osasere said the allegations are not only frivolous, but being pushed for selfish gains with their backers in Government House.

"The allegation about me being the Okaighele for 17 years is not true. They lied for their own self-interest and reason best known to them.

"November 15, 2023 was when my Odionwere and l, Pa. Joseph Imadiyi Osayamwanbo along contemporaries from other villages; about 18 precisely, took an oath in the Palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II that made me become the Okaighele of Orior Ozolua Community.

"So the years they are actually alleging that I have spent in the position, I don't know where they got that from.

"My community had always been in peace until they employed the services of one Paul Akhere in Government House who addresses himself as SA to the Governor on Security Matters.

"He actually came and connived with these rebels in my community to make trouble and three persons have been shot in the exercise.

"Odionwere and myself went to Government House and complained to him about the persons he actually released who came to shoot our people.

"He said my Odionwere should enter the community coffers and take money to go treat them; he doesn't want the police to be involved saying he has finished that matter and that he has the power to remove and install any Okaighele.

"He said he has removed me as the Okaighele of Orior Ozolua and in two weeks, he was going to install a new one and that is what we are waiting for."

Going further Osasere added that the same group of agitators had lodged their grievances with the Palace of the Oba and all parties were invited to appear last Thursday but on the directive of Paul Akhere they refused to honour the invitation from the palace.

Asked what could be the interest of SA on Security Matters to Governor, Paul Akhere judging by his alleged actions, he said though he is not too sure as he is not a witness; some alleged that it could be as regard to land allocated to him, while others said it is a cash gift.

"But mere looking at his actions; a situation where he is acting strange and threatening the Odionwere if he refuses to abide by his directives, he will remove him from the position, that can only be out of ulterior interest."

Interestingly however, the Odionwere has declared even before the Palace Chiefs that Osasere remains his Okaighele, he said.

He added that in Benin Law and Custom, it is only the Odionwere in agreement with the Council of Elders who have the responsibility to install anyone as the Okaighele and not by any other person or means, and present to the Oba for acknowledgement and approval; "this was done in 2023 in my case," Osasere added.

The agitators are troublemakers who want sustenance of the old order where they arbitrarily sell one plot of land to several persons; a fraudulent act Odionwere and l have said must stop after swearing to an oath in the Palace of the Oba; it must not be business as usual, he declared.

This is the sole reason behind their gang up and agitation with the connivance of Akhere in the Government House, the Okaighele further alleged.

However in his reaction, the Special Assistant on Security to Edo State Governor, Paul Akhere said the governor being the Chief Security officer of the state has the power to ensure there is peace in the state

He noted that as an SA on security, he does not go outside to see what is going on without the permission of the governor.

"So the issue of Okaighele in Orior-Ozolua community, the governor has given instructions to pick another Okaighele for peace to reign since the people are against him having served for 17 years in the position", he said.

Nairaland GeneralUrgent Call For Action On Insecurity And Recent Killings In Edo State by Easy4real10(op): 12:15pm On Apr 02, 2025
His Excellency,
Senator Monday Okpebholo
Governor of Edo State
Government House, Benin City,
Edo State, Nigeria

Your Excellency,

I write to you with deep concern regarding the escalating insecurity within Edo State, particularly the alarming cases of killings and kidnappings that have left our citizens in fear and distress. The recent killing of Northerners in Uromi last week is a tragic reminder of the growing insecurity in our dear state, and I urge your administration to take immediate and decisive action to curb this menace.

It is important to emphasize that no Nigerian deserves to be unjustly killed, whether by Fulani herdsmen, terrorists, jungle justice, or even security personnel. The right to life is fundamental, and it is the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety and protection of all its citizens, regardless of ethnicity or background.

The continuous reports of kidnappings, killings, and the rape of women in their farms, especially in Esan land, have undoubtedly contributed to the heightened suspicion and retaliatory attacks against Northerners. This situation underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive security strategy to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace in our communities.

To effectively tackle this crisis, I implore the government to take the following proactive measures:

* Ban the movement of people in and out of Edo State using goods-only vehicles – This will help curb the influx of criminal elements who exploit such means to evade security checks.

* Prohibit unauthorized individuals from carrying weapons – Only legally recognized security agencies should be allowed to bear arms, reducing the risk of armed violence.

* Enforce a restriction on outdoor sleeping arrangements at night – This will minimize exposure to criminal attacks and unauthorized gatherings that may lead to unrest.

* Set up workshops, training, and empowerment programs for the youth – Engaging young people productively will help reduce the lure of criminal activities.

* Introduce a Personal Identity Card system – This will enable security agencies to track non-indigenous persons within the state and monitor their activities effectively.

* Enact and enforce laws that protect people, land, and property – Strengthening legal frameworks will ensure accountability and deter criminal acts.

* Prohibit visitors from residing in Edo State’s bushes and streets – Edo people visiting other states do not stay in the bushes but live in metropolitan areas where they work, engage in business, and contribute to the growth of the state. Allowing people to inhabit bushes and streets poses a significant security threat and should be strictly prohibited.

Implementing these measures will significantly contribute to curbing insecurity and fostering a peaceful Edo State where every resident can live without fear. The people of Edo State look up to your leadership to act decisively and restore safety in our communities.

I trust in your commitment to the welfare of our people and urge you to take immediate steps to address this pressing issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your swift action in ensuring the security and well-being of all Edo State residents.

Yours sincerely,

Nairaland GeneralCourt Orders State Counsel To File An Amended Charge Against Ex-nba Pub. Sec by Easy4real10(op): 9:04pm On Mar 05, 2025
By Easy Ekoyatah

A Benin High Court, Criminal Division, has ordered a prosecuting State Counsel to file an amended charge in the case involving a former Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Benin branch, Douglas Ogbankwa.

The ruling was in view of issues raised on whether or not, plea can be taken in the matter whereas, one of the charges was earlier struck out by the Court and the Prosecution was yet to amend the charge.

Counsel to the Defendant, E. Egharevba, told the court that he had a motion to set aside the ruling made by the Court on the last adjourned date, but the trial Judge, Hon. Justice Williams Aziegbemhin, urged him to go on appeal if he was not satisfied with the Court's ruling.

The Court emphasized that it should not be seen by members of the public that the Court was trying to prevent the matter from going on, having suffered series of adjournment.

The Prosecution Counsel, D. Haruna, argued that the application aimed at setting aside the Court's ruling and quashing the charge, was a violation of Section 221 of the Administration of Criminals Justice Law, adding that non-amendment of a charge, cannot stop plea from being taken.

Following heated argument on the fate of the motion, the Defendant, Douglas Ogbankwa, collected the case file from his Counsel, E. Egharevba, opting to conduct the matter by himself being a lawyer.

Ogbankwa also raised the issue of the matter being reported by the press, causing him series of embarrassment, but Abraham Oviawe who is Counsel holding the nominal complainant's watching brief, expressed excitement over the turn of events against the Defendant who initially invited the Press into the matter.

The nominal Complainant, Ms Sandra Palmer-Kelvin, told the Court that Douglas Ogbankwa brought in the Press, addressing her as a surrogate mother amongst other allegations.

The matter was consequently adjourned to 2nd April, 2025.

It would be recalled that the Defendant was initially charged with alleged conspiracy to commit a felony, forcible entry, wilful damage, theft, aiding and abetting and forceful ejection.

The prosecution also alleged that the ex-NBA Publicity Secretary stole a stabiliser belonging to Ms Sandra Palmer-Kelvin and also forcefully ejected her from her matrimonial home at 2nd Ugbor Road, G.R.A, Benin City, in January 2023.

The APC acting chairman noted that the failure of police to prosecute all those that were identified in that killing, may have emboldened the PDP to carry out this latest attack.

PoliticsEdo APC Faults Pdp’s Allegation On INEC BVAS During Sept 21 Gov'ship Election by Easy4real10(op): 5:34am On Dec 02, 2024
By Easy Ekoyatah

The Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday frowned at the allegation by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, State Chairman Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System) was compromised for the September 21st governorship election.

Addressing a press conference at the party's state secretariat, the Acting State Chairman of the party, Emperor Jarret Tenebe carpeted a PDP Chieftain, Osita Chidoka's claim that BIVAS and the electoral body were compromised during the election.

According to him, "We state unequivocally that there are two sets of BVAS machines in INEC office. The one legitimately used by INEC for the election and the manipulated machines that were smuggled into the office of INEC by the PDP.

"We therefore now more than ever before, call on the security agencies to investigate where the PDP got the manipulated BVAS machines from with which they are circulating fake results since same have been acknowledged in the public space."

Tenebe also carpeted the PDP on its criticisms on the current administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo saying the party lacked today's governance realities.

“The landmark projects Okpebholo has embarked upon like the Ramat Park Fly Over which the PDP had criticized was captured in the reviewed budget of 2024 and that the allegation of alleged attack on its secretariat was a case the now opposition party cannot substantiate.

Tenebe said “The ignoble and violent traits of PDP which they exhibited before, during and after the election are the sign posts of imperialistic disposition which the Edo people shall never pray to experience again."

He floored the public display of call to violence by some chieftains of the PDP during the campaigns in the event that the party loses the election, a situation he said was enough to query their moral rights to challenge the result of an election they expressed desperation to win.

The Edo APC Acting Chairman said this call for violence even before the election resulted in "the killing of the police inspector attached to the now governor adding that the "PDP, still celebrating its failure has now embarked on a self-destructive voyage to criticize the government of Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo that has surpassed the non-achievement of Governor Obaseki in Eight years, having just been in office for a few days."

He claimed that Dr. Tony Aziegbemi from the press conference he had few days ago only demonstrated that he has no knowledge of the implementation of the revised Appropriation Law 2024 of Edo State where according to him "the flyover bridge can be captured in the open ended parenthesis of the budget which accommodates for project of implicit and urgent importance.

"Edo people are now happy that a governor who understands their plights and is ready to tackle them head on has come and they now know that what the PDP Government termed “impossible projects” like the flyovers are realizable by a government that is determined to work and not believe in MOUs which only existed on papers."

On the suspected attack on the secretariat of the PDP, Tenebe said, "It is most disgusting for the PDP to ascribe the criminal destruction that happened in their moribund secretariat to the APC.

"While the APC Government of His Excellency, Monday Okpebholo condemned any act of criminal tendencies like the alleged destruction of the PDP secretariat, it must be stated without equivocation that the said alleged act has no bearing with the APC.

“The allegation by the PDP that suspected APC members attacked the secretariat was a criminal allegation that must be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

“Therefore, we require the PDP to substantiate their allegations with undisputed facts so that the allegations should not remain in the realm of suspicion which has no place in our criminal statutes.

"The PDP must know that His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Monday Okoebholo has put his hand on the plow and is ready to put Edo State in the map of progressives."

The Medical and Dental Consultants' Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Chapter in compliance with the national directive has commenced a one week warning strike from Monday 18th to Sunday, 24th November, 2024.

In an unprecedented action, the association expressed concerns regarding the unwarranted and unprovoked exclusion of medical and dental lecturers based on discriminatory criteria used in the appointment for the selection process of university leadership positions including for the office of the Vice-Chancellor as experienced recently in some universities including the recent case of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

It also expressed concerns in government delay in the harmonisation of the retirement age of medical and dental consultants to 70 years to mitigate the effects of doctors’ migration which is having a terrible toll on the health and mental state of the medical workforce; and the persistent hesitance for the payment of the emoluments of medical lecturers with Consolidated Medical Salary Structure to correct the shortfalls in their emolument, entry-level, and their pension among other demands. These have been on for months and years.

Earlier in October this year, MDCAN issued a 21-day ultimatum from October 21 to November 11, to stakeholders, including the Federal Government, to address its demands, or its members would withdraw their services nationwide.

The strike commenced on Monday due to federal government insensitivity to the MDCAN expressed concerns and hereby demands that "The FG should immediately relieve the Chairman of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University of his appointment as Council Chairman, for his insubordination and failure to enforce the Ministry of Education’s directive nullifying any appointments that run against laid down procedures.

"The development of an all-inclusive prototype of advertisement for the Office of Vice-Chancellor. The advertisement for the Office of Vice Chancellor as recently issued by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, may serve as a prototype.

"The harmonisation of the retirement age of Medical Consultants to 70 years.

"The harmonisation of payment of emoluments of CONMESS to ensure universal applicability of CONMESS to all Medical and Dental officers.

"The Payment of 2023 and 2024, Clinical Duty Allowance areas, and 2023 25 percent/35 percent CONMESS arrears."

This strike will shutdown all medical activities in 83 MDCAN chapters representing 83 teaching hospitals; Federal Medical Centres and Specialists Hospitals. And the 42 fully accredited medical schools, 11 partially accredited medical schools, 9 fully accredited dental schools and 2 partially accredited dental schools.

…Unveils 5-point agenda - security, infrastructure, healthcare, food sufficiency, education as priorities
…Declares war on criminals

By Easy Ekoyatah

Senator Monday Okpebholo, the newly sworn-in Executive Governor of Edo State, today revealed his administration’s bold five-point agenda, with a assurance to deliver on them in the next four years.

Governor Okpebholo disclosed this during his swearing-in ceremony as the 6th Executive Governor of the State at Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo State capital.

The Governor unveiled 5-point agenda which included security, infrastructure and road development, affordable healthcare, water and food sufficiency, and value-driven education across the state.

According to the Governor, “our citizens is top priority for us. To achieve this, we shall implement programmes carefully outlined in my five-point agenda, designed to grow robust economic growth and improve the lives of our people.”

While hailing Edo people for their unwavering support, the Governor promised not to betray the people.

“My dear people of Edo state, let me start by thanking God Almighty for His grace and incredible blessings. Democracy has triumphed again in our dear State. For me, this is a humbling moment; made possible by you all.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank you for your peaceful conduct during the 21st September, 2024 Governorship Election. Today, you have officially given me the mandate to preside over our dear State as Governor for the next four years.

“We will not betray this confidence you have reposed in me and the Deputy Governor, Rt. Honourable Dennis Idahosa,” Governor Okpebholo said.

While bemoaning incessant cases of kidnapping and other violent crimes, Governor Okpebholo said his administration will be firm in dealing with criminals and improve the security of Edo State.

He said: “For a long time now, our people have become victims of kidnapping and other violent crimes. To end this ugly situation, we will be firm in dealing with criminals and improve the security of our land so that farming and other business activities will flourish again.”

On road construction and infrastructural development, he said: “The deplorable condition of our roads has made it difficult for people to move from one part of the State to another. Our policy to develop road infrastructure is targeted at constructing roads, drainages, and bridges to ease transportation for all. We shall immediately commence work to make the roads passable again.

“We are also ready to partner with the federal government, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, those in the diaspora, and other stakeholders, to develop our State across all sectors.”

Going further, Governor Okpebholo added that his administration will support small businesses and market women with soft loans.

“Our teeming youthful population will not be left out. We shall support them to acquire relevant skills for self-empowerment. My administration shall immediately swing into action to recruit teachers and rebuild the deplorable classrooms. Tertiary education will be strengthened in many ways, too, to ensure quality education.

“Fellow citizens, my administration is ready to link communities that have not yet been connected to the national grid to ensure that they have electricity.

“Our traditional institution shall be given the necessary support to play their role as custodians of our rich cultural heritage. It is in recognition of this that my administration shall support the decision of the Federal Government to uphold the Oba of Benin as the exclusive owner of the returned artefacts that were looted away by British Colonial Forces during the Benin Massacre of 1897” he said.

Governor Okpebholo said his administration will work closely with other arms of government in the State for the common good of the people.

He said: “To the Edo State House of Assembly, our people have tasked us to work together for the common good of all. My administration is ready to work with you to strengthen institutions of governance and accelerate development.

“Recall that on 17th June 2019, 14 elected members of Edo state House of Assembly were denied inauguration into the 7th Assembly. It was a big blow to our democracy. My administration is setting up a panel of inquiries to investigate the remote causes of that incident so as to avoid future occurrence. This is very imperative because the legislative arm of government is an essential component for the sustenance of democracy.

“Under the doctrine of Separation of Powers, the judicial arm of government shall be strengthened to administer justice; fairly and promptly.

“The delay and refusal by the previous administration to swear in three judges recommended by the National Judicial Council is indeed regrettable. The Chief Judge will look into this and take necessary actions without delay.”

Okpebholo hailed the contributions of civil servants in the State. “I want to thank members of the Edo Civil Service for their invaluable contributions to the development of our State. Your welfare shall be topmost in my agenda as meaningful reforms shall be initiated to ensure innovation, transparency, and zero-tolerance for corruption in public service,” he said.

The Governor said that despite the enormous task ahead, with God on his side and the firm support from the people, the State will prevail.

“I recognise the enormous task ahead; but with a firm resolve and God’s guidance, we shall prevail. I thank you once again for the privilege and opportunity to serve you as Governor for the next four years,” Governor Okpebholo concluded

PoliticsObaseki Is Frustrated Over Plan To Frustrate Okpebholo’s Inauguration – Orobosa by Easy4real10(op): 1:56pm On Nov 10, 2024
By Easy Ekoyatah

The Media/Publicity Sub-Committee, Edo State Governorship Inauguration Committee, has read with regrets the unbelievable remarks made by the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State that he has been left out from the preparation for the swearing-in ceremonies of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the 6th Executive Governor of our dear state.

This was contained in a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo JP and made available to newsmen today in Benin City.

According to the statement, “Obaseki is upset because his plan to frustrate the Inauguration of Senator Monday Okpebholo as Edo State Governor has failed, after refusing to discharge his constitutional responsibility.

“This comment and others he consciously made, demonstrates Obaseki's unprecedented malice and bitterness that traced his wasteful administration, which by God's Grace will come to a deserved end in the next 24 hours.

“The norm and practice is that, the inauguration of an incoming President or Governor, is planned by a Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. But for obvious reasons, Obaseki has decided to abdicate his responsibility to Edo people by withdrawing the participation of his government.”

Going further, Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo added: “It may interest Nigerians to note that, from the list of basic request we made, only one Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and four Hilux trucks were volunteered. All our requests have been met with brick walls.

“It is therefore disingenuous for Obaseki to feebly accuse the All Progressives Congress (APC) of not inviting him to the swearing-in ceremonies of his successor.

“Truth is, Obaseki is merely looking for a reason to excuse himself from the traditional handing over ceremony which the Nigerian Constitution demands from him.

“We call on Nigerians and in particular Edo State people to ignore Obaseki’s temper tantrums which he has always exhibited with his uncontrolled outburst of anger and frustration whenever he fails to get his own way.

“Obaseki's outlandish defensive misinformation gave him out as a terrible liar. In one breath, he admitted that "the government of Edo state is inaugurating a new governor on Tuesday," but followed with a denial that the government of Edo state is not involved.

“He then went ahead to encapsulate the sanctity of the Nigerian Constitution, but pretentiously failed to understand also that, the constitution act to prevent corruption, discrimination, and the misuse of public office by public office holders.

“Sad is an understatement response to Obaseki's claim that the inauguration committee has not invited him. If we may ask, who is supposed to invite who? He has the government apparatus at his disposal, which for reasons best known to him, have been kept away from us.

“Arising from the joint meeting we had with Obaseki's team, a program of event which he approved was adopted. But strangely, he stoutly refused to implement same. His nominees thereafter, expressed frustration at Obaseki's inability to give them the required support.

“His claim that our party the APC has ‘borrowed between N2 billion and N5 billion to fund the upcoming inauguration of Governor-elect Senator Monday Okpebholo,’ should remind Nigerians of the legions of lies Obaseki has peddled against the opposition, especially President Bola Tinubu in the past.

He noted: “For the avoidance of doubt, the Inauguration Committee is driving the program with 20% less than what the Edo State Government led by Obaseki had budgeted, before the Accountant General was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for pending sundry corruption offences, including the mismanagement of the Central Bank's Agricultural loans to the state which has now been traced to Sterling Bank, where the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Aside Ighodalo is a major shareholder.

“Truth be told, Obaseki who wanted to frustrate the inauguration process is only upset that the inauguration is going ahead without him discharging his constitutional responsibility.”

APC Uncover Plans By Gov Obaseki To Cause Dissatisfaction In Edo, Scuttle Okpebholo's Govt, Says Tenebe

By Our REPORTER

The Acting Chairman of Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC),
Emperor Khalifa Jarret Tenebe has alleged that the outgoing governor of the State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has implemented and still planning to implement at the twilight of his government.

In a press statement made available to newsmen today Emperor Tenebe stated, "our party the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been inaudated with reports of last minute decisions taken by the outgoing administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki."

The statement further added that, "We have investigated all the reports and our findings affirmed the terrible decisions Mr. Obaseki has implemented and still planning to implement at the twilight of his government.

"Of note is his unilateral decision to convert hundreds of his former political aides and others who were his personal staff in Afrinvest Company, into the Edo State Civil Service.

"In doing so, Mr. Obaseki discountenanced the established statutory requirement for civil service rule by refusing to declare vacancy and usurping the role of Edo State Civil Service Commission.

"In the light of these worrisome discoveries, we hereby put Edo people on notice, that Obaseki's decision to fill the State Civil Service workforce with his cronnies is a violation of the his oath of office and act of economic sabotage.

"Also in his manner to create industrial dispute for the incoming administration, Obaseki has empanelled a sinister body to workout a new minimum wage of N85,000 for workers in the state, despite the open fact that he has been unable to fully implement the N70,000 approved by the APC led Federal Government of Nigeria.

"The revelations that have emerged in the public knowledge from the ongoing investigation of key officers in Obaseki's administration by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), points to the fact that Obaseki has mortgaged the state to his business partners.

(A REJOINDER TO THE SPURIOUS ALLEGATIONS LEVELLED AGAINST ME BY BAYERO UNIVERSITY, KANO)

By
David Iluebe

1. Since 26th of July, 2024, the social media has been awash with the above subject matter in quote, which emanated from the Special Bulletin of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Vol. XLIII No 50, as released on the Internet in their vile social media trial of the suspects. I wish to categorically state that the information is grossly embellished and garnished with tissues of lies. The original source is as maliciously tainted with falsehood as its various versions being peddled on the internet by Punch, Tribune, News Central Africa, Daily Post, Oriental Times (all online) of 26th to 27th of July, 2024, and other social media outlets alongside Radio Nigeria that took it up without any form of investigation or confirmation from the suspects. This rejoinder is therefore a refutation of the spurious allegations against my person and dignity. It is necessitated by the need to clear the dark air surrounding what actually transpired at Bayero University, Kano between me and the school management. In other words, the response is an attempt to separate the truth from the published misleading lies.

2. Without a doubt, I am Dr David Iluebe whose photograph appears on the right side of the original publication. On the 24th of July, 2024, I walked through the main gate into the premises of Bayero University, a Federal University belonging to the Federal Republic of Nigeria (my country of origin) with the intent of marketing some of my publications (as an author, a publisher, and book seller) to students who might be interested in them for intellectual development. The business of marketing books in Nigerian tertiary institutions has been my means of livelihood over the years. As it currently stands, being a well-educated Nigerian with a PhD without any gainful employment yet, it is with this business that I am currently catering for my family predominantly. In fact, it was also with it that I trained myself in the university from first degree up to PhD level. Conventionally, I have been to many universities in different parts of Nigeria, where I usually go to classes of interest to either take permission from lecturers in their course of teaching or class representatives in less-engaged classes, who then invite me to address the students, wherein those interested normally purchase my books.

3. So, on getting to the Faculty of Engineering in BUK, where students converged that fateful day, I met one Mr Chike Emmanuel whom I know as a fellow marketer of books on tertiary Institution campuses selling his Mathematics and Statistics books to some year one students in one of the lecture halls. When I noticed that he was through with the transaction, I equally attempted to advertise some of my publications to the students. Before then, I disclosed my mission to the class rep. who kindly gave me the go-ahead and helped to calm down the students who were about dismissing on confirming that the expected lecture was no longer going to hold.

4. When I eventually took the stage to introduce myself to the combined faculty-class as a publisher and book marketer, as well as the books I have for them, they willingly, convincingly and enthusiastically bought some copies for personal use without any form of deceit, impersonation and coercion from me. The two books which I sold for one thousand naira (N1,000) per copy to them are: Use of English, and a compilation entitled: Nigerian Peoples and Culture. However, those who had no money for immediate purchase pleaded with both of us to come back the following day. Surprisingly, in the process of fulfilling the students’ desire the following day, the university security operatives swooped on us with the false claim that we “deceived” their students to purchase our books.

5. Consequently, we were handcuffed together for two days unfed without anybody ready to hear our own side of the story. On the first day, we were embarrassingly paraded round the campus in joint handcuffs like criminals, evoking mixed feelings of amusement and sympathy from the teeming onlookers. Later in the day, the subordinates of the Director of Security in the university who had already briefed their leader arraigned us before him. When he had patiently given us fair hearing, he contended that we must have come to the school with some sinister motives outside sale of books. I laughed agonizingly, resisted his fallacious perspective and introduced myself to him as a PhD holder in English who write, publish and sell books on Nigerian campuses to survive hard times. I further explained that I go about marketing my personally authored books on Nigerian campuses for lack of gainful employment yet. He looked at me with a pitch of pity, flipped through the books we brought for sale and promised to take us to the VC for “soft landing” and possible offer of a job, especially to a prestigious PhD holder in English like me. Profusely, I appreciated him, thinking that the unleashed affliction was over, not knowing that it had just begun.

6. In the evening of that day, we were brought before the VC in his exalted office. A very handsome and magnificent personality that looks outwardly harmless, and physically taller than everyone in the university that he superintends. With him were several of the university principal officers. As I beheld his eminence, I traveled through the soothing imagination of being favoured by him with an appointment, and kept hope alive. But in a short while, it turned out to be an illusion. As we stood before him in handcuffs, he asked for our names, which were variously introduced as Dr David Iluebe (from Edo State) and Mr Chike Emmanuel (from Delta State). Noticeably, at the mention of “David” and “Emmanuel,” his countenance changed, and heaven was let loose. He fumed, “you, who made you a doctor?” He automatically invalidated my doctorate on the grounds that someone of my academic level ought to have been engaged somewhere if I was actually what I claimed to be. As I was trying to tie my predicament to the Nigerian situation of unemployment, he burst in with the strange subject matter of forcing his students to buy our books as a pr-condition for passing exams in the guise of being their lectures. Oh, my God, it sounded so strange, unimaginable and shocking as I heard the malevolent allegation for the first time since the beginning of the ordeal. Obviously, it was a case of giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

7. We tried to explain the truth of the matter, but he commanded us to “shut up!” And he re-emphasized: “you went into the class and introduced yourselves to the students as their lecturers, imposed your books on them as the requirements for passing their Continuous Assessment and exams, and even threatened them with failure if they didn’t buy the books.” Meanwhile, to the best of my knowledge, nothing of such happened. Imagine! As total strangers, how couldn’t we have done that to university students who must have known their lecturers? But, as incriminating and weighty as these unverified claims were, the VC forbade us from uttering any word in response. On seeing his level of rage, we started begging vehemently on our knees for leniency, especially for his identified primary offence of trespass. Yet, nothing changed.

8. Furiously, he declared that nobody could walk into any university in the Southern part of Nigeria where we hail from to market books like that without paying dearly for it. As the anger intensified, he queried his security personnel for not breaking our legs before presenting us to him, and then called on the Dean of Students: “get some petrol and mobilize the students to set them ablaze.” Categorically, he said to us, “both of you are dying today.” Yet, nobody among his subordinates dared to challenge him about such a dangerous step. Helplessly, we continued with the pleas that seemed to make no meaning to him, while battling with the fear of the unknown and confusion. Within this dark moment, I silently prayed God to avert the evil verdict in a hurry, while we continued appealing to the VC with all our strength.

9. And then, suddenly, by divine providence, he halted his plan of homicide and opted for a lesser evil of pushing his predetermined judgment and false claim into the social media. That was how his media team photographed us, cooked the story of their choice as fine-tuned by the VC to suit his purpose, and then hastily popped it into the Internet space without any investigation. From the VC’s office, we were taken back to the security detention room, where we spent two days in chains unfed. It was so bad that the security operatives seized our phones and deprived us of reaching out to our families who were hitherto oblivious of what was going on.

10. On the second day of the in-house oppression and medial trial, the security operatives constrained us to refund the money with which the students willingly purchased our books as a condition for our release. With no choice, we refunded the N118,500 to the security operatives, whereas our books remained with the students. Yet, they refused to release us, but instead handed us over to the police Area Command in Kano. And then I ask: if the books were not good for the students as alleged, why were they retained by them? Emphatically, these people have unjustly retained both our books and the cash recovered from us till date.

11. To an extent, the police were neutral in the case in their search for truth and justice. But, they detained us for additional two days after which we were released on bail. They didn’t also advise the university to return our books or either return the money retrieved from us if the students must retain the books. Remarkably, earlier, when the university representative and the leader of the class in question presented their case to the police Admin Officer who was the first to interrogate us, in his presence, I personally asked the class rep whether I had in any way claimed to be their lecturer when I advertized my books to them. And the boy emphatically said “No,” to the amazement of both the investigating police officer and the university representative. This was in contrast with what was already being circulated in the social media. However, the following day, most of the students who bought the books were mobilized to the police station and instigated by the university to testify in writing that they were forced to buy the books in line with the falsehood being peddled in the social media. But, that seemed to have come too late based on what the class rep had earlier testified at the same station.

12.When the storm was over at the state police headquarters where the case was later transferred to, I asked the leader of the class from which it arose, in a whatsApp chat, “who on earth lied to the VC that we claimed to be your lecturers?” Surprisingly, he said, “that shouldn’t be disclosed.” This clearly shows that something is wrong somewhere? Nevertheless, I had to appreciate him for testifying earlier about my innocence before the police, assuring that I bear no grudge against him.

13. Observably, on the second day of our travail in the hands of the “smart” BUK security operatives, something remarkable played out before our very eyes. Some students came to report a pure case of fraud involving a Hausa Muslim “businessman” on the campus, who collected N1,500 each from over 40 new students to help them forge the medical certificates required for their clearance. The deal having become counterproductive, the case was presented by the students to the same man who arrested us and pushed our case to the VC without mercy. Guess what. He simply asked the culprit to refund the money and go in peace without any further consequence. Accordingly, the young man refunded the cash and walked away with his dignity intact. But, in our own case, we were made to refund the money to the school, and thereafter detained for further affliction, while the books remain with the students till date. Well, I don’t know if it is safe to describe it as a case of tribalism, discrimination, and religious bigotry in our supposedly “one Nigeria.” But, the truth is a universal and no respecter of persons.

14. In the aforementioned widely circulated malicious publication, I am particularly accused of trespass, impersonation, cheating and piracy. On the moral issue of not taking permission from the management instead of the class rep., I apologized to the VC, but all to no avail. Honestly, if the class rep. whom I obtained permission from had given me the hint that sale of books was exclusively not allowed in BUK unlike other public universities that I have been to, I wouldn’t have attempted it. Besides, I passed through the class rep. because I considered the VC too busy with administration to be approached for the seemingly minute issue of selling books on campus.

15. Furthermore, I didn’t in any way impersonate any lecturer in BUK nor threaten any student to buy my books. This is quite an unreasonable thing to do. They voluntarily bought the books that I advertised to them without any form of deceit, coercion and impersonation. As a matter of fact, when some of the students asked if I was one of their lecturers, I emphatically retorted “No.” Think of it: how could I have told engineering students that I am their departmental lecturer in the course of marketing an English book? Was that the English Department of the university? Then comes the accusation of “cheating.” Then, I ask: how is the sale of two books at the rate of N2,000 a cheating in the present economic reality?

16. Ridiculously, I am also accused of piracy in the publication. And these are books written by me. Then I ask: how can an author pirate his own books? Besides, it is alleged that the same books were sold at the Kano State Polytechnic early this year. This is another figment of imagination as nothing of such is associated with me. As a matter of fact, these are university books. Above all, it is wickedly alleged in the malicious publication that “the suspects confessed to all the allegations levelled against them,” whereas the VC didn’t give us any iota of opportunity to explain to him what actually happened and how it happened. And I begin to wonder how such baseless accusations could be levelled against hustling Nigerians who merely entered a public university in search of their daily bread without any sinister motive.

17. Indeed, I was grossly dehumanized by BUK management, with my rights vehemently violated. Their publication has immensely smeared and tarnished my image and hard-earned reputation. They have widely publicized my name on the Internet for the wrong reasons. Consequently, I have dully informed my family members and counsel, while I patiently await their informed decision and counsel for the next line of action. Meanwhile, I call on all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community to take note of the gross injustice perpetrated against me in a public university in my own country.

18. Finally, I hereby aver solemnly that I am Dr David Iluebe, a native of Okpella in Etsako-East Local Government of Edo State and a bonafide citizen of Federal Republic of Nigeria Among other academic qualifications, I hold a bachelor’s degree in English & Literature, and Master’s in English Language from the University of Benin, and a PhD in English from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. I am not an impersonator. I am not a book pirate. I am not a manipulator. I am a writer, with over 30 books to my credit. I am equally a book marketer, a CAC-registered publisher, devout Christian and clergyman. Over the years, I have been marketing books on Nigerian university campuses without any intent to deceive or cheat anybody or fake my identity. So, the notion of a “fake lecturer” does not arise here at all. Besides, I am an intelligent PhD holder in search of gainful employment to enable me contribute my quota to national development. Thank you so much for having the patience to read this rejoinder.

PoliticsTake Responsibility For Your Failure At Edo Election Polls – LP To Akpata by Easy4real10(op): 10:22am On Sep 26, 2024
…Condemns allegation of betrayal levelled against party agents, faithful

By Easy Ekoyatah

Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Ativie-led State Executive Committee of Labour Party (LP) has advised the candidate of the party in the just concluded Edo State Governorship Election, Barr. Olumide Akpata to take responsibility for his failure at the polls.

In a press statement signed by Airen Igbinedion, Publicity Secretary of the party stated that the party condemn in the strongest terms the baseless allegations of betrayal and vote-selling leveled against Labour Party agents and faithfuls. These claims are not only false but also an affront to the hardworking and committed individuals in our party who have consistently demonstrated their loyalty to our cause.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Labour Party, Edo State Chapter, has been drawn to recent unfounded allegations made by our gubernatorial candidate, Barrister Olumide Akpata, following his defeat in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election.

“In these allegations, he has sought to blame the Labour Party and its dedicated members for his loss by insinuating that party agents were involved in vote-selling and other acts of disloyalty.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the baseless allegations of betrayal and vote-selling leveled against Labour Party agents and faithfuls. These claims are not only false but also an affront to the hardworking and committed individuals in our party who have consistently demonstrated their loyalty to our cause.

“We wish to categorically state that the Labour Party, under the chairmanship of Rt. Hon. (Chief) Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, was not and was never involved in the uploading of polling unit agents for the election in question.

“Barrister Akpata chose to entrust the critical task of managing polling unit agents to his friends, allies, and cronies, bypassing the constitutionally recognized leadership and structure of the Labour Party in Edo State. Therefore, it is disingenuous for him to attempt to shift the blame for his electoral defeat onto the party and its members.

“For the avoidance of doubt, in a press statement issued by the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure, on September 9, 2024, it was made clear that, following controversies and disputes raised by Barrister Akpata himself, the access code for uploading polling unit agents was handed over to him, granting him full autonomy to upload his agents. This unusual step was taken to accommodate Barrister Akpata's demands, despite being contrary to the standard procedures of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and all political parties in Nigeria.

“The Labour Party in Edo State remains proud of its members, who stood firmly by our principles of integrity and democracy throughout the election process. We also sincerely apologize to all committed Labour Party faithful for the unguarded statements made by Barrister Akpata in the aftermath of the election. We understand the frustration and disappointment these statements may have caused, especially to those who worked tirelessly for the party.

“We hereby urge Barrister Akpata to take full responsibility for his actions and the failure of his campaign. Rather than blaming others, he should offer a sincere apology to the party and its loyal members and acknowledge that the agents he personally selected and uploaded were the ones who sold him out, not the Labour Party agents or its dedicated members.”

PoliticsEdo Decides: Akpata, Obi Responsible For Lp’s Awful Performance - Abure by Easy4real10(op): 9:35am On Sep 26, 2024
By Easy Ekoyatah

The national chairman of the Labour Party (LP) Barr. Julius has stated that Barr. Olumide Akpata and Mr. Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the party, are responsible for the awful performance of the party in the just concluded governorship election in Edo State.

In a statement signed by Abayomi Arabambi, LP’s Publicity Secretary, and made available to newsmen, noted that Peter Obi and Governor Alex Oti’s high handedness, deceit, love for power grabbing, brash, abrasive approach and betrayal of National Working Committee of the party, under Abure and the Secretary, Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim, sowed the seeds of failures and contributed in many ways to LP’s loss in the governorship election.

“Another reason that led to the defeat of LP was that Olumide Akpata is from the same local government (Oredo) and the same Senatorial District, with Governor Godwin Obaseki, who will soon complete his eight-year term.”

He added: “Edo people wanted the next governor to emerge from Edo Central Senatorial District of Edo State which explains why APC and PDP took their candidates from there”.

He described a statement credited to Obi that the damage INEC caused in the Edo governorship election will inevitably take revenge on those responsible and affect their children in the future as an insult to the generality of Edo people who wanted equity and justice for Edo Central Senatorial District, but which Obi decided to work against.

The party also berated its governorship candidate for alleging that the election was for the highest bidder, saying that Akpata lacks moral right to say that.

“Olumide Akpata has no reason to complain about the election and buying of votes. Akpata bought all the Labour Party delegates during the primary to get the Labour Party ticket. He bought over the party structure, gave them vehicles. He even called police to harass those who pointed out the abnormality. He bought the National Working Committee over, and took the ticket”, Arabambi said.

The Party also congratulated the Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the victory, saying that the victory was a well-deserved one.

The party, while congratulating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for a job well done, described the election as one of the fairest, freest and most peaceful elections in the country.

In a statement signed by Abayomi Arabambi, LP’s Publicity Secretary, and made available to newsmen, said those who accused INEC of being partial and fraud in the election, are part of Nigerians who failed to learn from history.

He said, “Whatever INEC does was correct. The problem with Nigerians and their leaders is that if anything doesn’t favour us, that thing is wrong, but if it favour us even when it’s wrong, we described it as the right thing”.

Going further, the party noted: “just last week, Mr. Peter Obi and Alex Otti were clapping for INEC who alleged that the tenure of Abure has expired. When they knew that we had a national convention in Nnewi, where INEC was invited, Alex Otti sponsored the convention, he was represented by his Deputy at the convention, all his commissioners were present, and yet because they wanted to forcefully and illegally take over the party, they said INEC was correct to say Abure’s tenure has expired when they themselves know that INEC was not truthful, but acting illegally. Today because they failed in Edo, INEC has done the wrong thing”.
