PoliticsYakubu Applauds Oba Ewuare II For Receiving Esan Enijies, Others by Easy4real10(op): 2:53pm On Jun 03, 2023
…Eulogizes Esan Enijies for their initiatives

By Simeon OSAJIE

The Benin Monarch, Omo N’Bba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin Kingdom has been commended for receiving the Esan Enijies and members of the Esan Okpa Initiatives who were in his palace on an advocacy visit on the need to have an Edo Governor of Esan extraction come 2024 gubernatorial election.

A frontline Edo 2024 Governorship candidate and former Chairman of Esan-North East Local Government Council, Hon. John Yakubu gave the commendation following the successful visit of the Esan Enigies to the Oba in Benin City.

He said that the Benin monarch's response to the visitors to consult with his chiefs and leaders of thought was the right thing to do in order to carry everyone along.

Hon. Yakubu who was the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy Governorship candidate in the 2016 Governorship election said that he is confident that the Benins being just, fair and accommodating people will find the request of the Esan people as presented by their Enigies and leaders of thought acceptable especially as the Benin and Esan peoples are brothers and sisters.

The former Chairman of Esan-North East Local Government Council, commended the Esan Enigies for finding the time to leave their domains to pursue this worthy cause very dear to their subjects.

He prayed God and our ancestors to protect them as they crisscross the state in their search for political relevance for their subjects.

Politics“abure-led, Ogbaloi-led Excos Remains Suspended”, Says Ugbo by Easy4real10(op): 11:07pm On Jun 02, 2023
By Moses Oguntade

A former Local Government Council Chairmanship candidate and an aspirant in the 2024 gubernatorial election under the platform of Labour Party (LP), Comrade Curtis Eghosa Ugbo has reemphasized that the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Edo State Executive Committee (SEC) led by Barr. Julius Abure and Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi remain suspended.

That was stated in a press statement issued and signed by Comrade Curtis Eghosa Ugbo emanated from his campaign office in Benin City, Edo State capital.

Comrade Ugbo’s statement reads in part: “The purported suspension of Murphy Paul Imasuen, the rightful candidate of the Labour Party in the just concluded supplementary election of Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal House of Representatives election by the suspended National Executive Committee (NEC) and Edo State Executive Committee (SEC) led by Barr. Julius Abure and Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi have no moral justification to suspend Murphy Paul Imasuen who was duly elected at a well-attended party primary that earned him the Federal House of Representatives candidate based on the Constitution of the Party.

“Recall that Murphy Paul Imasuen, the authentic candidate of the party during Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal House of Representatives election defeated both the duo of Barr. Julius Abure and Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi-led national and state executive respectively at the Supreme Court to further authenticate him as the rightful candidate of the party.

“Also, the National NEC meeting held in Bauchi State last month already suspended all State Excos including Edo State. Our Acting National Chairman, Mr. Lamidi Apapa-led executive committee do not recognized Julius Abure and Kelly Igbaloi as members of the party, until they agreed to appear before the Disciplinary Committee of the party which the Federal High Court in Abuja had uphold.

“I therefore call on well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the purported suspension of Murphy Paul Imasuen and three others. It is a lost battle for Julius Abure and Kelly Ogbaloi led national and state excos.”

... threatening legal action over Billboard destruction

By Simeon OSAJIE

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Deputy governorship candidate in the Edo 2016 Gubernatorial Election, Hon. John Yakubu yesterday, Thursday 11, 2023 appealed to Governor Godwin Obaseki to urgently stop the malicious demolition of political billboards in parts of the state by suspected political opponents.

Yakubu made the call at his campaign office in Benin City, Edo State capital during a press conference to draw the attention of the state government and Edo people to the destruction and removal of his billboards across the state, saying the ugly situation if not checked could result in unavoidable political crisis in the state in the forthcoming governorship contest for 2024.

He said the action which he described as 'distasteful and reprehensible' is capable of heating the polity and further create the emergence of a dangerous and dictatorial tendency inimical to the practice of democracy.

According to the governorship aspirant, "I have cause to address you this morning in order to bring to the notice and attention of the good people of Edo State through you the emergence of a dangerous and dictatorial tendency inimical to the practice of democracy, which among others, guarantees free speech, freedom of movement, freedom of association.

"Some days ago, we observed with dismay that a number of our billboards which we paid for and caused to be placed along Airport Road, Ikpoba Slope and Ikpoba Hill had been removed illegally. On enquiry, the advertising company that handled the transaction on our behalf told us that the removal was ordered by a very top Edo State government official who was angry about the message contained in the billboards.

"We find this reprehensible, irresponsible, distasteful, high-handed and a dubious attempt to hold down our modest efforts to reach and sensitize the good people of Edo State on our message of hope, our message of 'Edo of Our Dream is Possible.'

"The message did not canvass for votes neither did it seek to promote the interest of any political party. The messages have not violated any electoral law. It merely says 'Edo of Our Dream is Possible', and that has put them on a panic mode because they know this is exactly what the good people of Edo State are yearning for.

"It has become clear from this action that the alleged top government official who is also rumoured to be nursing the 2024 gubernatorial ambition became alarmed and frightened at the speed at which we have succeeded in convincing the Edo State people in our little way that the dream of a better Edo is indeed possible."

Yakubu who noted that the race to the 2024 Edo Governorship election has not begun in earnest, solicited the state governor's intervention saying, "We will like to call on Governor Godwin Obaseki to rein in this his top official in order not to create a situation that will result in unavoidable political crisis in the state as we march towards 2024.

"We are also calling on all Edo State people of goodwill to speak out on this matter as it portends clear and present danger for our politics as we approach the 2024 off season Edo State governorship election," Yakubu said.

Ahead of the Edo 2024 Governorship Election and coupled with the campaign statement credited to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Prrsident-elect, which has gone viral, saying he will "gift Edo state to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the APC when elected president", a statement which the state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Tony Aziegbemi described as "unpresidential and not good enough to be heard from a statesman, let alone a presidential hopeful, as it were."

Dr. Aziegbemi who stated this in a chat with newsmen in Benin City, Edo State capital said, "for as much as many would say campaign statements may not be binding, but for a supposedly reliable politician, campaign promises are bound to be kept.

"As such, we as a people are not seeing this as a mere campaign statement but a grand plan to gift us as political compensation to a friend for supporting your campaign to be president.

"Edo people are more and better enlightened to know what is good for them as against been treated as an article for compensation.

The PDP chairman further stated that "Edo State fared better in opposition under a PDP government in the last few years when compared to some other APC States. What we need as a people is good leadership that is people rooted and focused."

He then called on the President-Elect, APC chieftains and their party to "wake up to the reality of the fact that as Edo People, we are proud of our valued independent mindedness and would resist any attempt by anybody, no matter how highly placed, to turn us to mere article of trade or materials to be gifted to friends as compensation. They should be reminded that the blood of our fathers that built The Great Benin Moat in the 14th Century still flows in our veins."

Dr Tony Aziegbemi then called on all Edo people within and in Diaspora to "shine your eyes and defend your state against political invasion aimed at milking our collective resources and wealth to create a business empire for an individual."

There is no doubting the fact that our party, the PDP, has been so committed to a remodelled, rebranded and refocused Edo State, which must be sustained. We have never gifted you to any individual and we don't intent to do that. Rather, we have always worked with you, showing a direction towards a better state for our future generation.

"I make bold to tell you that as the party steering the ship of Edo State, we remain focused and committed to serving you better so that the dividend of democracy currently provided by our amiable governor and leader, Mr. Godwin Obaseki will not be derailed or truncated."

...draws parallel between electoral mishap in Edo, Adamawa

By Simeon OSAJIE

After a review of the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the supplementary governorship election in Adamawa State, I commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for taking decisive steps to ensure that the right thing was done in Adamawa State, where a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) usurped the powers of the Chief Returning Officer to unilaterally declare a winner when collation had not been concluded.

This been the position of the Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State Chapter, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi who in a statement issued in Benin City, copies of which was made available to newsmen said, "the bold and courageous stance by INEC is the right step in upholding the tenets of democracy and reinstating the Commission's commitment to promoting a fair and healthy democratic process, raising hope that the country is on a path of progress in its democratic journey.

"The disgraceful conduct of the erring official, Mr. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, draws parallel to a similar occurrence that marred the successful conduct of the PDP congresses and primary elections to produce candidates for the just-concluded National Assembly elections in Edo State, where Dr. Johnson Alaibo Sinkiem, then INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the State, usurped the powers of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), the body empowered by law to conduct congresses and primaries.

"Sinkiem, who is now the INEC REC in Rivers State is said to have 'in flagrant violation of the electoral laws, arrogated himself the powers of the returning officer and party's National Working Committee in respect of the primaries he conducted and accordingly forged the PDP primary election results.'

"The forged primary election results of the PDP primaries are what enabled the warring aspirants to file suits in the Abuja and Benin Divisions of the Federal High Court before the cases were finally put to rest by the Supreme Court which maintained that only the National Working Committee (NWC) of a political party has the power to conduct party primaries."

The Edo PDP State Chairman in his optimism said, "it is however gratifying to know that the then-dissident INEC REC in Edo State currently faces charges of alleged forgery and conspiracy in Edo State Police Command and we urge INEC to take a cue from this and follow up with the security agencies and other relevant authorities to ensure that the same decisive steps taken in Adamawa State is also taken so that the REC is duly prosecuted.

"His actions could have triggered a constitutional crisis, and it is imperative to ensure that such flagrant disregard for due process and established electoral laws do not reoccur."

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi however added, "ee, once more, express our deepest appreciation to INEC for standing with the people and defending the sanctity of our democracy.

"The Commission’s actions in Adamawa State are beacons of hope for our nation's electoral process, and we hope that the electoral body will continue to display such courage, integrity and impartiality in the discharge of its mandate."

By Simeon OSAJIE

The leadership of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has called on Muslims faithful in the State and Nigeria to keep hope alive for a better Nigeria.

The Chairman, PDP, Edo State chapter, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi who stated this in a press statement issued in Benin City said that this period calls for prayers among Nigerians in overcoming the hydra-headed challenges confronting the nation.

He called on Muslim faithful to exhibit a high degree of tolerance, perseverance; sacrifice and love which he noted are some of the lessons of the Ramadan period.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi also used the opportunity to call on the privileged people in our society to reach out to the poor who could not afford one square meal a day.

"I want to use the Ramadan celebration to felicitate with Muslims in Edo State and Nigeria at large, to congratulate them on the successful completion of the month long Ramadan fast.

“This period also calls for deep reflection among well-meaning Nigerians to pray for unity of the Country especially in the face of the daunting economic and security challenge facing the Country”.

He further urged Muslims adherents to show love and compassion among others as demonstrated by Holy Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W) and work towards the peace and progress of Edo State and Nigeria as they celebrate.

Nairaland GeneralPeople Of Ikhuen Oboh Appeals To IGP To Look Into Alleged Attempt By Officers To by Easy4real10(op): 3:05pm On Apr 19, 2023
By Simeon OSAJIE

The Ohen, Elders and people of Ikhuen Oboh Village in Uhunwonde Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to the Inspector General Of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba to come to their aid and look into the alleged attempt by Force CID Abuja to frustrate investigation of a notorious suspect called Clement Guobadia and others who allegedly killed one Frank Eferi with AK-47 gun in presence of a police officer in Benin City, Edo State capital.

The appealed was contained in a petition signed by Emmanuel Okonkwo Esq., Solicitor to the Chief Priest (Ohen) Efosa Aighobahi and Mr. Peter Eze Omorowa representatives of Ikhuen Oboh village and made available to the press.

They also expressed concern on the alleged nature of the investigation purported carried out by the Legal Department of the Force CID Abuja.

The petition pointed out that the useful credible evidence that were established linking the suspects (Clement Guobadia and others) to the alleged killing of one Frank Eferi, the alleged findings of the said Homicide Department appears to be in consonance with all other reports and findings of other departments of the Nigerian Police Force who previously investigated the matter before it was transferred to Force CID Abuja.

The Solicited noted that, in the petition the matter was verify believe that the matter was further remitted to the legal session of Force CID Abuja but it is however being alleged that cronies and allies of the principal who often allegedly engaging themselves in violent crimes are now boasting and aversely celebrating that they have now successfully compromised the investigation of the matter before the legal session of Force CID Abuja.

Emmanuel Okonkwo Esq added that they boasted that they were assured that the legal advice from the Legal Session of Force CID Abuja will no longer link the principal suspect to the alleged killing of Frank Eferi, that the material evidence that could establish same will be expunged and that the legal advice will only recommend and link the principal suspect to the offense of Unlawful Possession of fire arms.
When the information was confirmed by one of the activist in the state, Emmanuel Aigbogun, this led to wide jubilation in Iguomo that they have seen the legal advice and that the murder charge have been dropped so that they will be able to grant the suspect bail, the people of Ikhuen Oboh then express a no confidence on the lagal department, hence the appeal to the Inspector General Of Police to help look into the case and call for the file to know the true situation of case

The Solicitor pointed out it is in view of this and others that the Ohen, elders and people of the village are seeking for justice and pleads with Inspector General Of Police to revisit the case and direct that the previous findings of the various session of the Nigerian Police Force both at the Force CID Abuja be rigorously reviewed the alleged recommendations of the legal session of Force CID Abuja which allegedly purports to the principal suspect who allegedly killed one Frank Eferi in the presence of a senior Police officer and others in broad daylight.

He noted that the evidence against the principal suspect is obviously overwhelming, the cronies of the principal suspect all time material has been working assiduously to compromise the allegations of the matter at stake.

They then appealed to the Inspector General Of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba to use his good offices to look into the matter and do the needful as the soul of the deceased and everyone is in dire need of justice.

...Says, now that elections are over, it's time for governance

With the Saturday's, April 15, 2023 Supplementary Elections concluded, thus signalling the end of electoral process in Nigeria, the People's Democratic party (PDP) Edo State Chapter has sent congratulatory messages to winners of the various elective positions in the state, with a call on all to work within their respective positions to make Edo State great again.

Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, in a message personally issued in Benin City, Efo State capital copies of which were made available to newsmen said, "let us thank God for our State and our people that the just concluded election process was peaceful. Some States had unholy tales to tell but here, it was a story of one big family of Edo people. Our Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki was instrumental in this feat.

"I am by this note congratulating all those who have been elected to various positions under the platform of our great party, PDP, you all deserve your hard-earned victories. You are enjoined to reach out to your fellow contestants.

"I also want to appreciate all our party members and other supporters who may not be card-carrying members of our party for their support and good conduct throughout the process of the election.

"Now that election is over, it is time for more serious work aimed at making our State, Edo great again."

Going further, Dr. Aziegbemi added, "I can assure you that our governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki will continue to provide the much-needed leadership.

"I am also calling on all the citizens of Edo State to team up with the government in its drive to create better opportunities for us today and our generations to come. The government needs our support to achieve more. As a people, we should give all our support to Mr. Godwin Obaseki led government of Edo State.

To members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Chairman Tony Aziegbemi said, "It is time for all of us to close ranks and queue behind the leadership of our amiable governor, so that we can, among other things, work to bring the much-needed dividends of democracy to our people and also grow our party for the future.

Nairaland GeneralSingle Haulage Bill Passage: Why Governor Obaseki Must Not Sign It Into Law. by Easy4real10(op): 5:36pm On Apr 16, 2023
By Eben ENASCO

Towards the end of March 2023, the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) passed the Executive Bill for a law to establish a Single Haulage Fee on Agricultural Farm Produce.

The presentation of the bill was done by the Majority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Henry Okhuarobo represents the Ikpoba Okha constituency.

Okhuarobo during his presentation of the executive bill, argued that the Bill critically supports the uniformity in the charges on farm produce.

Eight out of the Nine lawmakers in attendance unanimously pledged their backing for the Bill to be passed into law despite the objection by Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency Two, in the 7th State Assembly, who drew the attention of the House to carefully observe a section of the Bill that he perceived was designed to strangulate the people through prices of commodity hikes in Edo State.

The eight lawmakers as a majority defended their stance when they claimed that the bill will provide a legal framework for the smooth administration of taxes, shore up revenue for the State as well as provide job employment for the unemployed.

They further added that it will create a single fee for goods and agricultural produce, noting that it would also plug some of the identified leakages in the collection of fees.

Emmanuel Agbaje said outside the drawback spotted in tax imposition of the bill on the commonly consumed farm produce, he expects the Executive Bill to only capture Taxes on degraded goods, such as cocoa and other related products.

Agbaje’s call to delete the tax bill that he anticipated will impose taxes on poor farmers amidst economic hardship when passed on Commonly consumed goods, or Non-Degrade, such as tomatoes, vegetables, and okra in the section of the bill, did not receive support amongst colleagues as his lone voice was left in the wilderness and his arguments thrown to the dustbin.

Outside Agbaje's variations and his deeds to point out loopholes in the bill, there are infractions of an aspect of the bill that may stop the further consideration of signing it into law.

For the record, the lawmaker should have consulted deeper into the Tax and levy laws and whether it granted any permission for such collection before considering passing the bill.

On the whole, the state governor is in the last stage to assent to the bill before promulgating it as a law.

Before assenting to the bill, the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki should know there is a need to seek a section of the law under the collection of taxes and levy rates as enshrined in the Constitution.

The Former Minister of Agriculture Audu Ogbeh had 2017 raised concerns about the illegal checkpoints and revenue collectors along transportation routes for food items, saying it had an impact on the current increase in the prices of food.

The Federal Government has constituted an Inter-Agency Committee to enforce a ban on the collection of levies and taxes on agricultural produce on highways.

A statement issued by Tony Ohaeri, the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Abuja on Monday, said the committee was inaugurated by the Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh.

The committee was constituted following recommendations of the Presidential Taskforce on increasing food prices set up in February by the outgoing Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

He urged the committee to facilitate the government’s directives on the multiple levies and unauthorized checkpoints during the transportation of agricultural produce from one state to another.

In 1981, Decree No 21 of the Military Government of Nigeria, Section 2 stated that "no person including a Tax authority shall Mount Roadblock in any part of the Country for Tax or Levy collecting."

The Decree of Section 2, however, recommended a 3-year or fine of N50,000.00 or both for any authority, who contravenes.

Similarly, in a judgment dated Tuesday, October 24, 2014, with Suit No.HIGU/2/2014, between an oil palm Company, Claimant, and Ovia South-West Local Government Council, Defendant, before Justice J. A. Osadiaye at the High Court sitting in Iguobazuwa, the Court held that the Defendant has no power under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, or any law to Mount Roadblocks within its Local Government Area to collect any tax, levies and/or rate for any reason whatsoever from the Claimant and/or its suppliers.

The originating summons dated and filed by the Claimant against the Defendant, on March 25, 2024, asks the Court to resolve whether or not the Defendant has the power under the Constitution to collect the tax or any levy.

This is a testimony that is pointing to our argument.

The bill harmonizing a single haulage fee should have captured degraded farm produce not allowing it to extend to none degraded goods.

Agribusiness is tax-free. The payments of minimum tax by companies that make small or no profits at all do not apply to agro-allied businesses.

Agro-allied plant and equipment enjoy enhanced capital allowances of up to 50%.

Although no business entity is given a blanket exemption from paying taxes, companies operating within the agricultural sector are exempted from paying specific taxes that apply to companies in other sectors.

The Companies Income Tax Act 27 and other fiscal legislations 28 offer a variety of tax incentives to attract potential investors and entrepreneurs.

Though part of the challenges militating against farm business includes weather hazards like inadequate rain, flood invasion, pest invasion, disease outbreak among livestock, and glut, it is pertinent to note that the current cost of diesel and electricity tariff in running farm machinery is not helpful, as this is an already a huge burden to farmers on its own.

Enumerated facts are, the major reason an agricultural business could not accommodate multiple taxes, is that agricultural businesses cannot survive with multiple taxes which has been introduced by some state governments.

Tax is supposed to come from farmers’ profit but now the reverse is the case as the government tries to forcefully generate tax from farmers' funds and borrowed funds.

In the past, farmers pay company income tax to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

In addition, states collect personal income tax from the company’s directors and staff, also education levy is being collected.

The transport ministry has many operators dealing decisively with farmers transporting their goods, including Vehicle Inspection Officers, (VIO), Police, traffic police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Local Council contractors/agents, and consultants generating all kinds of levies from farmers.

The worse part of it is the outrageous bill imposed by these tax collectors, like tax consultants, contractors, and agents. They raised bills in millions and then call for negotiation.

The government needs to realize that farmers are employers of labour, sending them out of business means sending more people to the unemployment market, which may result in insecurity in the nation as a hungry man is an angry man.

Some Stakeholders who spoke to journalists warned that agric business may soon go into extinction if issues of multiple taxations, activities of herdsmen, and militants against farmers are not addressed.

A local farmer, Engr. Osawe Hilton who seriously frowned at the recent Executive Bill said food scarcity is imminent in the State, considering the rising onslaught of herdsmen, militants disrupting activities of farmers, and now the new attempt to suffocate farmers by the Edo State House of Assembly and the State Government.

Engr. Osawe added, “Multiple taxes introduced by some states against farmers are not helping the issue. Everyone believes the fact that the agricultural business is hazardous. Hence, many international communities apply for tax relief or exceptions for their farmers to guarantee food security.

Another farmer, Enogieru Osayuware, said if the tax imposition is allowed, then it will have multiplier effects on the purchase of commodities in the open markets

They called on government at all levels to rise to defend farmers and get them protected against multiple taxations and all other challenges.

According to Osayuware, “We suggest farmers should be considered for tax relief or in the alternative, allow the company income tax and personal tax income to remain, rather than looking for avenues to undermine farmers through various levies.”

In a local adage, it is often said that, when a single “shoe-bomber” fails to blow up an aircraft, we now have to remove footwear to prevent that.

But preventing it from allowing the destruction of the process would require changes to the laws regarding the availability of the above that has become a red line.

Especially when lobbying against the will of the people which is heavily involved in sponsoring politicians and buying influence.

An honest response might be shrugging and saying “Oh well, that was inevitable, but I for one am not going to lift a finger to allow anti-people law to thrive.

Civil Society organizations and all available actors should find a way to engage the government to get simple clarity on the proposed harmonized haulage bill.

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in Edo state has commended the judgement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in which it laid to rest the long contestation between brothers, sisters and friends in the party which climaxed into a protracted litigation from the lower courts up to the Supreme Court, which should not have happened.

The intra party conflict that has rocked the Edo state Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has now been finally laid to rest with this supreme court judgement.

Edo State Chairman, PDP, Dr Tony Aziegbemi in a chat with media men, immediately after the Supreme Court judgement said, "the journey to the Supreme Court by brothers, sisters and friends of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State is not as a result of crisis but a quest by active interests to test the strength of law and our democracy.

"The result of the judgement has now helped to grow our democracy and will subsequently become a reference as well as a guide to all political parties and politicians alike".

According to Dr. Aziegbemi, "we have learnt our collective lessons and more propelled to work as a team and a strong party. I want to say categorically that there was never a crisis in the party but mere interpretation of certain modalities and procedures which has become clearer to all of us now.

"I want to appreciate all members of the PDP Nationwide and most importantly in Edo state for their understanding during the period. I am calling on our members to close ranks. This call is now mandatory. The party belongs to all of us and we are all co-stakeholders in the success of the party.

"I call on all of us to queue behind our Leader, Governor Godwin Obaseki who has in just 2 years in the PDP has demonstrated capacity to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people. I must mention some of the monumental projects:

“The 95MW Ossiomo PPP project that is powering many government offices and homes

“The 60,000 barrels per day modular refinery in Ologbo that is functioning

“The Civil service reform adjudged to be the best in Nigeria

“The reforms in the education sector through the Edo Best programme.

“The increase in minimum wage-the only State in Nigeria that has increased minimum wage and the prompt payment of salaries unfailingly on the 26th of every month

“Edo Tech Park.

“The Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub

“Efficient security architecture, which has made Edo State the only State in the country that is 100% covered in terms of security.

"Let us all now re-dedicate ourselves to the growth and victory of the party in the forthcoming elections. We have to work extra hard to deliver ALL our candidates. That is what we do in PDP."

Going further, the Edo State PDP Chairman added, "Am aware that some of my brothers and sisters in the party who may have had divergent views to the issues may have also been critical to certain positions I may have taken in the past few months. To these set of people, I tender my unreserved apologies as I may have slightly injured them in the course of discharging my duties as the State Chairman.

"In all, let us forge ahead together with confidence and deliver all our candidates on February 25th and 11th March 2023. That has now become a sacred duty. Our members and indeed Edolites expect nothing less from us."

Following the high risk operation that led to the safe rescue of the kidnapped victims of the Ikekhe Train Station in Igueben Local Government Area by the Edo State government and the combined security operatives that constitute the State Security Tactical Team, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sent a congratulatory message to the Governor Godwin Obaseki and the gallant security institutions and personnel who worked tirelessly to effect the rescue of the victims.

In a thought-provoking statement issued in Benin City by the Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi "the fit achieved within a week to rescue these victims is a function of the proactive nature of a government that cares for the people’s safety.

"The determination and resilient nature of our security outfit, our local vigilantes, and community hunters are indications that a people's determination can never be compromised, most especially with a government that has invested in technology, the people and relevant security agencies.

"We as a people are conscious of our security, our government is proactive and security operatives are highly professional and disciplined.”

Dr. Aziegbemi further added: "we as a people are joining hands with our state government and the security agencies to warn the criminally minded bandits that Edo State has zero tolerance for crime and criminalities. There is no haven for criminals in our state.”

“Kidnapper should note that Edo State is not the place they come and do their notorious kidnapping business because the state is truly covered with technology put together by Edo state government and all the security agencies in the state,”

You will recall that unspecified numbers of train passengers waiting to board at the Ikekhen Train Station in Igueben local government area of Edo State, en route to Warri, Delta State were reportedly abducted by suspected kidnappers.

PoliticsAPC Edo Fiddles Tinubu, Unable To Substantiate Huge Money On Failed Outing by Easy4real10(op): 11:37am On Jan 06, 2023
By Simeon OSAJIE

The much taunted presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benin City, Edo State capital has come and gone with tracks of unfulfilled outing comparable to the huge resources and energy deployed.

The unsuspecting APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu may have been defrauded by his Edo State lieutenants who failed to remind him that "Edo Nor Be Lagos" or that the party operators are still leaving in their ghost past of no consequence.

This was the position of Dr. Tony Azieggbemi, Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who while chatting with newsmen in Benin City said "what was regarded as APC presidential rally with the party candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in attendance was an avenue for the party leaders in the state to make money for themselves and as always failed woefully to deliver.”

According to Dr. Aziegbemi, “How best can you explain that the so-called opposition party in the state could not mobilize its supposed supporters to fill a meagre 3,000-man capacity sports complex if its Edo State officials have not embezzled funds given to them?

"The poor outing is an indication of the rejection of the APC and their candidate by Edo State people who are yet to recover from the worst economic strangulation the country is going through.

"It is unfortunate that the Edo Leaders of APC misled their party candidate to release money on the fathom lies that they are on ground.

"The poor turnout further shows that the All Progressive Party (APC) will not get 15 per cent let alone 25 per cent of the votes cast in Edo State on February 25, 2023.”

Politics2023: Edo PDP Criticizes Betrayer Members, Judge For Attempting To Ruin Campaign by Easy4real10(op): 7:32pm On Dec 04, 2022
By Simeon OSAJIE

The Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed some of its betrayer members and a Justice of the Federal High Court, Abuja, for attempting to deploy frivolous court orders/judgments to ruin its campaigns in the 2023 general elections.

In a statement issued and singed by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, state party chairman, said it will not be distracted or derailed by the mischiefs of some aggrieved members who are working for ‘extraterrestrial paymasters.’

According to Aziegbemi, “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State received with great shock and disappointment the news of the reported judgement of the Honourable Justice Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, purporting to uphold the candidacy of some members of the party as the candidates of the PDP in the forthcoming National Assembly and State Legislative elections.

“It is interesting and perhaps worrisome that in the run-up to these elections, over nine (9) different court orders in favour of these members of the PDP have been issued by the very same Court of the Honourable Justice Ekwo.”

The State PDP chaiurman noted that the orders and judgements have hitherto suffered the humiliation of being set aside on appeal for being given either without jurisdiction or in defiance of laid down principles of law and justice.

He said, “These most recent judgments/orders coming on the heels of the judgement of the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court on the same subject and between the same parties, will certainly suffer the same fate of reversal on appeal that its unfortunate predecessors have.

“It is clear from the timing and content of these new orders/judgments that the intent of these members is to use their judicial access and props to distract and disrupt the legitimate campaigns of our respective candidates in the forthcoming Legislative elections in Edo State.

“The PDP is determined to ensure that these schemes are met with failure and defeat as the party and our candidates will be undaunted and will continue to vigorously campaign to bring our message of hope, rejuvenation, change and development to our people at all levels of society.”

Going further, he added: “May we by this notice enjoin all well-meaning Edo people and the recognised PDP candidates not to be caught up or dismayed. We have a subsisting Appeal Court judgment recognising our candidates to whom the National Headquarters have issued certificates of Return.

“The party has, as usual, instructed its very competent legal team to expeditiously challenge and set aside these obvious unsupportable and illogical orders/judgement, which purport to reverse extant decisions not only of the Supreme Court but the Court of Appeal and co-ordinate Judges in Federal High Court system.

“We urge our teeming supporters, candidates, stakeholders and the general public to resist the temptation of being drawn into the non-existent controversies being manufactured by these agents of discord and vigorously continue in their preparation towards the General elections coming up in less than 100 days.

“We are convinced that it is only a question of time for the lies, shenanigans, subterfuges and propaganda to hit their expiry dates. The perpetrators will then run out of space to hide or create alternative realities based on falsehoods.

“The PDP remains resolute in its desire to provide the best democratic options for the people of Edo State and we call upon all persons of Goodwill to shun and ignore deceit, propaganda and falsehood designed to derail the coming benefits which the generality of our people anxiously await.

“We call on all persons to vote for the candidates of the PDP in all the forthcoming elections and we solemnly undertake to defend those votes with every energy at our disposal.”

With the assistance of the then military governor of the defunct Midwest/Bendel State, late Brig.-Gen. Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, Edo NUJ was able to erected two story building in part of the landed property.

Also recall that during the era of Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion as governor of Edo State and with his assistance, Edo NUJ was able to owe a guess house in part of the landed property. Two past governors from South-South region of the country, were on ground to performed the foundation laying ceremony that metamorphosed to the building of the Edo NUJ Guess House.

The Oba Oguola Press Centre is strategic, as it is the venue for daily distribution of local, regional, national newspapers and magazines to vendors and distributors.
The Oba Oguola Press Centre also houses the befitting office of correspondents and Reliance chapels, among others.

Unconfirmed report reaching The9JaTREND also revealed that Mr. Godwin Obaseki wanted to use Edo NUJ’s land to build Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA), to house the stolen artifacts being returned to Benin from Europe, to rival the Edo Royal Museum, being built by Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, to house the same artifacts.

The Edo royal museum is located opposite the palace of the first-class monarch (Oba of Benin), with major stakeholders in the state and beyond supporting the initiative, which is backed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was also revealed that expatriates that would handle the EMOWAA project for Mr. Godwin Obaseki at NUJ Oba Oguola press centre were at the site for inspection, and they were accompanied by fully-armed policemen, with the demolition likely to commence soon.

The Functioning Director of Lands, Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS), Mrs. Lydia Igbinigie, earlier wrote to Edo State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, on the land matter, while the Managing Director of EDOGIS, Mrs. Osaro Aihie, who was appointed by Obaseki about three months ago, later called Alenkhe on the same matter.

The Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, a lawyer, met in his office on Friday morning with some stakeholders on the NUJ’s land matter, with some past chairmen of the state council of NUJ (name withheld) quoting the SSG as stating that he was not aware of the land tussle and demolition bid, but promised to get the details.

Efforts were later made to speak with Edo SSG, but his MTN line was not available, at press time.

When contacted through telephone, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, stated that Obaseki’s government was working on moat’s right of way in Benin and its environs, while he declined further comment on the NUJ’s land matter and planned demolition of the befitting secretariat.

Alenkhe, at 5:03 p.m., through the phone, said: “Mr. President of NUJ, Chief Chris Isiguzo directed Edo State Council’s leadership of NUJ to resist the forcible takeover of the land.”

He also added that the directive of Isiguzo would be strictly adhered to.

PoliticsAziegbemi Tasks Edo PDP Campaign Council Directors On Winning 2023 Elections by Easy4real10(op): 8:44pm On Oct 24, 2022
By Simeon OSAJIE

The Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Dr. Tony Aziegbemi has urged the newly inaugurated Directors of Atiku/Okowa 2023 Campaign Council Directors to work proactively and assiduously with a view to, not just only winning the election, which is very obvious, but with a landslide.

Aziegbemi stated this during the inauguration of the Campaign Council Directors on Monday, 24th October by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki at the Campaign council office in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Aziegbemi, who is the Deputy Chairman of the Campaign Council, while enumerating the terms of reference of each directorate as headed by the various directors, he said: “the Director of the State Campaign Management Committee is the head of the Campaign in the State and leads the Deputy Director and other staffers to implement the entire campaign agenda in the State. He is the Chief Executive of the Campaign in the State, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“The Deputy Director, Media and Publicity coordinates the Media and Publicity component of the campaign under the general template set by the Director of Strategic Communication at the National Campaign Management Committee in exercising his responsibility to ensure effective and coherent communication in the state. He or she will report to the Director, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State campaign Council.”

Disclosing further, the functions of the various Directorates, the Edo state chairman of PDP said, “The Deputy Director, Field Operations’ major assignment and focus of the campaign organization is to canvass for votes, win and defend votes during the elections. Therefore field operation covers all activities relating to the actual campaigns in the state. The unit relates with the Department of Field Operations at the National Campaign Management Committee in this wise. It is in charge of rallies and field activities relating to the campaign, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“The Deputy Director, Election Management’s terms of reference is to relate to all the activities to ensure the Party becomes successful in the elections. They include the recruitment of agents and personnel that will work for the Party in the election. This includes training of election personnel to understand and operationalize every relevant aspect of elections from voting to declaration of result, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“The Director of Research and Strategy will be responsible to conduct necessary research and analysis required for the campaign to adapt to the local challenges and develop Campaign Strategies to optimize the resources and opportunities in the state and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

The Deputy Director of Finance will have responsibility to ensure good use of all finances for the campaign. He or she will also support the candidate and the national leadership of the campaign in fundraising as the context allows. The Deputy Director of finance will also ensure accurate record of all financial transactions related to the Presidential campaign in the state in line with the electoral law and other extant regulations, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.”

On the duties of the Deputy Director-General, Volunteers Groups, Deputy Director of Security and other Directorates, Aziegbemi has this to say, “the campaign will be led by canvassers and volunteers across the country. The candidates and the National Leadership of the Party have resolved that the volunteers and social groups should operate in the states where they will be officially registered and managed. The Deputy Director will receive basic policy direction from the Director of Field Operations at the National Campaign Committee and utilize the guidance and resources to ensure effective functioning of the volunteer groups in the state where they are domiciled, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“The Deputy Director of Security will bear responsibility to ensure the safety and security of Campaign Personnel and manage the relationship between the campaign and formal and informal institutions of security in the state.
And any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“The Campaign recognizes the critical importance of Religious and Cultural Institutions in determining the fortunes of the Party in the elections. Therefore, the campaign must factor the beliefs, sentiments and interests of cultural and religious leadership in making the Presidential candidate acceptable and admirable in the state and ensuring that the people of the state vote for the candidate. The Deputy Director will be someone who has sufficient network and influence, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“The National Office will require good reporting from the different campaign structures in the state. The reports from the state will enable the National Office to make adequate provisions for effective campaigning in the state. Therefore the Deputy Director has responsibility to ensure that required information gets to the National Office to ensure effective Management of the Campaign in the state.
And any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“Nothing changes much with the structure for the campaign in the Local Government Areas. The critical point is that the Policy-making with regards to Presidential campaign in the Local Government will be made by members of the State Campaign Council from the Local Government Areas. The composition of the LGA Campaign Council will include Former Governors, Deputy Governors, Former Party Leaders from the LGA like NWC, BOT, NEC, SWC members, Former Senators, HORs, LGA Chairmen and Former LGA Chairmen of the Party, etc. together, they constitute the Campaign Council in the Local Government Areas.

“Furthermore, at the Local Government level, the head of the LGA Campaign Management Committee is called ‘Coordinator’ also the Media and Publicity Department becomes Publicity as there will be little resort to organized Media groups, but more engagement with Traditional and Local Communication Platforms. Also at the Local Government Level, mobilization disaggregated into (a) youths and (b) women (c) elders and special interest bodies in the LGA.
And any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“The Ward Campaign Management Committee resembles the LGA Campaign Management Committee in every material particular. The only difference of note is that the Head of the Campaign Committee at the Ward level is called “the Head of Committee, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.

“Two major changes are introduced at the ward levels to optimize effective campaign at the polling unit and ensure effective defense of votes at the polling units, which are the critical level in election management. The first major introduction is that the 3 agents of the party will be part of the campaign from the state. There will also be seven (7) canvassers who will be responsible for mobilizing voters and ensuring they come out and vote on election day. At least 3 of the canvassers will be women. Before the election, these agents and canvassers will be the front men and women for harvesting votes in polling units. It means that they can only be agents in the polling unit where they are registered to vote. They will be part of the campaign from day one and therefore familiar with all the protocols and strategies developed by the party to harvest votes and protect them.

“Another innovative feature of the Polling Unit Campaign Committee is the appointment of Voting Day Intelligence Officers in the campaign structure at the Polling Unite. The person to be so appointed must be a trusted party member who owns a smart phone and has masterly use of it. He or she will be responsible for ensuring that all the safeguards for ensuring that the votes for the party are protected and effectively counted, declared by the presiding officers and transmitted electronically to the official receptacle for safe custody. He or she must ensure compliance with all the protocols in the INEC guidelines for the conduct of the election, and any other duty/duties assigned by the State Campaign Council.”

After which our client’s street sign post was placed at the beginning, middle and end of the street as authorized by the local government council.

“Our client informed us that he was shocked when he saw that the street sign post was removed on the 10th day of November, 2021. That when our client inquired about of who must have done such a barbaric action; he discovered that one Mr. Christopher Esebanme who recently packed into his house in the street was the one who removed the sign post.

“Our client told us that he approached your office to lay a complain on the issue and found out that it was some of your staff (Ikpoba Okha LGC) that re-registered the street in the name of Mr. Esebanme and even gave him a certificate of street naming on a street that is already in existence with a certificate of street naming. A copy of the certificate of street naming is hereby attached as your perusal.

“It is on this note that we write to you sir, sincerely craving your indulgence to call Mr. Esebanme to order to also forestall and act or conduct likely to cause breach of peace in the said street. We also demand that the certificate of street naming given to Mr. Esebanme be withdrawn forthwith as it is illegally obtained.”

The said N70,000 was itemized on the Certificate issued and given to me by the council staff.

“After my payment of N70,000, my sign post was issued to me bearing Ukpebor Osayande Street. The street which is 290.01m long was approved with site location describing the length of the street.  I placed at the beginning, middle and end of the street as authorized by the local government council. I was shocked when I saw that my street sign post was removed from my street, on the 10th day of November, 2021.

“When I inquired to know who could have done such an act, I discovered that it was Mr. Esebanme who recently build and packed into his house in my street, with the assistance of the town planning department of Ikpoba Okha local government council, re-registered the street in the name of Mr. Esebanme Avenue and gave him a Certificate of street naming on the street that is already in existence called Ukpebor Osayande street, which has since been showing on the Google Map of Ikpoba Okha LGA and around the world.

“Since the decision of the elders of the community, Mr. Esebanme still keep on removing my sign post from the street, bringing the youth of Etete Community to fight me,” he alleged.

When contacted, the Edionwere of  Egbiken Community, Pa Napoleon Edogiawere collaborated Mr. Osayande’s claimed.

He said, “Mr. Osayande is the rightful person who first built and packed into his street  and as such embarked on the process of seeking approval from Ikpbo Okha local government council and was approved according to the documents he presented to me and my elders, and we also went as far to the council to verify the true copy of the documents, And our findings revealed that he has done and paid the necessary amount required to the council.

“Mr. Ukpebor Osayande is the rightful over of the street. He bought the land from me through my son. I told Mr. Esebanme to stop harassing him as he cannot lay claimed to the street. I am ready and my elders and ready too to defend this to the end. Mr. Esebanme should please allow peace reign in my community”, Pa Edogiawere said.

All efforts made by MeritNews to reach out to Mr. Esebanme to get his reaction proved abortive as his GSM phone number was switch off.

By Easy OKOJIE

The recent threat to the Oil and gas industry in Nigeria, due to Crude Oil theft has led to the staggering revelations of oil bunkering activities around the Niger-Delta Region of Nigeria. This has continued to gain traction as can of worms have been opened since the federal government raised concerns over the stealing of crude oil and illegal refinery operations which is causing dwindling revenue in the country.

Investigations have revealed that Edo State is not left out of the oil theft saga.

Sources revealed that some illegal bunkers around the Edo State capital are very much involved in these destructive criminal activities.

It was alleged that a woman by the name Itohan Evans aka. (Madam IT) was arrested on Friday 7th October 2022 alongside her conspirators by security operatives in the Edo State Police command.

The said woman, who is a kingpin, was also released immediately by the State Command, after she paid a huge sum of money to a high-ranking senior police officer in the Command, who in turn let her off the hook by granting her bail without due process as stated by the law.

Sources also alleged that the said Madam IT is part of a cartel of Crude Oil thieves that are specialized in the vandalization of crude oil pipeline belonging to Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) in Edo State, while their base of operation is around Kilometre 16/17 Benin Sapele road at Ogbakpen and Obayaton axis of the Benin metropolis.

The manager of the said woman, one Mr. Chukwuka Sunday who was also apprehended alongside other suspects by security operatives of the Command, admitted to their illicit activities and the exhibits that were discovered on their site of operations include Five (5) Pumping Machines, Six (6) Trucks loaded with adulterated Diesel (AGO) and a fully loaded truck of Corrosive Acid Chemicals which is used to process the crude oil.

According to the sources, the activities of these crude oil thieves in Edo State has created an environmental disaster around their area of operations and may likely become worse if not check by the authorities.

It was also alleged that some security agents in the state conspired with these criminals to sabotage the commonwealth of every Nigerian citizen.

PoliticsOrhionmwon/uhunmwonde LP Calls For Reinstatement Of Murphy Imasuen As Its Candid by Easy4real10(op): 5:29pm On Oct 03, 2022
By Simeon Osajie

The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency has called on the National authority and the State Executive of the party to urgently do the needful and reinstate Murphy Imasuen as the rightly candidate representing the federal constituency in the interests of the good will of the party.
It would be recalled that Murphy Imasuen was unanimously elected during the substitution primaries of Labour Party in Abudu on the 13th of July, 2022 to run for Orihionmwon/Uhunmwode federal constituency in the forthcoming 2023 National Assembly election.
In the seven pages letter addressed to Edo State Chairman, Comrade K.S.E. and copied Barr. Julius Abure, National Chairman of the party, signed by Austin Oronsaye, Chairman LP Uhunmwonde, Comrade Engr. Oriakhi Osaigbovo, Chairman, LP Orhionmwon, C. O. Ebuehi, Esq., the Committee Secretary and 24 others, the leaders said failure to reinstate Murphy Imasuen as the party candidate will amount to unlawful imposition and subversion of the collective will of the people of the constituency, which will be fully resisted.
Part of the letters reads, “RE: THE MATTER INVOLVING HON. MURPHY P. IMASUEN AND HON. ELIZABETH U. ATIVIE; BOTH OF UHUNMWONDE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN ORHIONMWON/UHUNMWONDE FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY.

“The above subject matter refers.
“Sometime around the 29th day of September, 2022, a matter involving one Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie and Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen was reported and referred to Executive Council of Labour Party, Edo State for amicable resolution between all concerned parties which however ended in deadlock and was subsequently referred to the Executive Council of Labour Party, Orionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency with a view to broker lasting peace between the contending parties and make recommendations accordingly.
“The sole question that needed to be resolved between the parties, who are before the Executive Council of Labour Party, Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency at the meeting held on the 1st of October, 2022 is, who is the candidate of Labour Party in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Constituency in the up-coming House of Representative Election come 2023.
“In resolving the issue between both parties who appeared personally before the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency Executive Council Committee, three (3) questions came up for determination and they are: (1) Whether Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen and Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie were legitimate Labour Party aspirants for the just concluded substitution primaries on July 13th 2022 as directed by the National authority of the party. (2) Whether Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen and Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie participated in the just concluded substitution primary for the House of Representative in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency. (3) Whether Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen and Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie were members of Labour Party by virtue of Article 10 (1) and (2) of Labour Party Constitution before the substitution primaries.”
Going further, the letter added, “After due consultations with both parties Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen and Elizabeth U. Ativie by way of eliciting oral testimony from both of them much deliberations made on the issue which also x-ray the position of Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Labour Party and the Labour Party, Orhionmwon Local Government Area. The Chairmen and some other Executive members of Labour Party that were present at the meeting also actively participated in asking and answering questions pertaining the issue. Principally, Mr. Ehiwe Ikuoyemwen, the place holder who was to be substituted orally laid the foundation on the issue.
“On Issue (1): In determining this issue, both Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen and Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie were called to give account of the process they went through.
“On account of Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen, he obtained the relevant forms having been led by his Labour Party Ward Executive Council to the Labour Party Local Government Area Executive Council, where he fulfilled all the relevant conditions required of him by the Labour Party Constitution which was brought to his knowledge by the Local Government Area Executive Council of Labour Party who led him to the State Executive Council for the acquisition of the relevant materials for the substitution primaries.
“On account of Hon. Blizabeth U. Ativie, she obtained the relevant forms from the National Office of Labour Party, Abuja; where she fulfilled all the conditions enumerated/highlighted for her by the National Executive Council of Labour Party, which is a condition viewed to be antithetical to the procedure obtainable in the Constitution of Labour Party by the general house. As such, the house unanimously considered this procedure abnormal.
“On Issue (2): In determining this issue, both parties were called to give an account of their involvement or otherwise with respect to the party substitution primaries held at the Labour Party Secretariat, Abudu, the headquarters of Federal Constituency held on 13th July, 2022 as directed by the national authority through the State Labour Party office.
“On account of Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen, he (Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen) partiticated in the exercise which was conducted at Abudu the headquarters of Federal Constituency on the 13” day of July, 2022 govern Government Labour Party Chairman and Com. Oriakhi Osaigbovo, Orhionmwon Local Government Labour Party Chairman respectively who were directed to conduct the substitution primaries by the relevant party authorities.
“While on account of Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie, she (Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie) affirmed that though informed of the time, venue and date of the exercise, but she did not participate in the primaries held on the 13th day of July, 2022 as directed by the national authority of the party. This was also affirmed and corroborated by the local government Chairman, Austin Oronsaye, Uhunmwonde Local Government Labour Party Chairman and Com. Oriakhi Osaigbovo, Orhionmwon Local Government Labour Party Chairman respectively.
“This issue having been carefully considered was resolved in favour of Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen for having participated in the party substitution primaries held at Abudu the headquarters of Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency on the 13th day of July, 2022 as directed by the national authority of the party transmitted through the state to the local government area.
“On issue (3): In determining this Issue, the relevant questions were inter alia: (i) How did they become members of Labour Party? (ii) If they are members of Labour Party, at what point or time did they become members?
“On the above questions, Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen narrated how he identified himself with the Labour Party at the unit level, the ward level where he regularized his membership card and the state level. Adding that his name is duly registered in the Ward register of Labour Party months the substitution primaries. This was affirmed by the ward Labour Party Chairman and the Local Government Labour Party Chairman both of Uhunmwonde Local Government Area.
“On account of Hon. Elizabeth U, Ativie, It was gathered that Hon. EIizabeth U. Ativie formalized her exit from All Progressives Congress (APC) on 6th September, 2022 and is yet to formalize her entrance into any political party as proved by her press release on the 6th of September, 2022, published in some print media e.g. Vanguard page 7. This was corroborated by delegates from her ward, Irue ward, who affirmed that she (Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie) has not regularized her membership with the ward and that her name is not in the ward register as at 1st October, 2022 and so not recognized as a Member of Labour Party in the ward. This was affirmed by the Chairman of Labour Party, Uhunmwonde Local Government Area. Though she (Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie) alleged that she obtained a membership card from the state chairman of Labour Party and affirmed that she was yet to formalize her membership with the unit and the ward.
“Having carefully considered the testimonies of Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen on one part, Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie and other delegates from her ward on the other part, it was unanimously resolved that Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie has not formalized her entrance into Labour Party and thus not a member of Labour 10 (1) and (2) of Labour Party Constitution is a qualified member of Labour Party and therefore he (Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen) is entitled to all rights and privileges of the party.
“Consequently, it was unanimously resolved that Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie cannot become a candidate in a party where she has not fully been a member and mandatory procedure as prescribed by the Labour Party constitution.
“The inclusion of Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie’s name on INEC list of candidate published some time ago was then considered as a misnomer and a mistake which should be corrected. The house then unanimously appeal to Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie to step down to enable the rightful candidate’s name to be reinstated as the candidate representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency.
“The house also unanimously called on the national authority of the party and the state executive of the party to urgently do the needful and reinstate Hon. Murphy Imasuen as the rightly candidate representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency in the interest of the goodwill of the party as failure to do so will amount to unlawful imposition and subversion of the collective will of the people of the constituency, which will be fully resisted.
“Moreso, when it has been confirmed that Hon. Elizabeth U, Ativie participated actively in All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representative primaries in May, 2022 and therefore barred by the Electoral Act of 2022 from contesting in another party's primaries, Thus, any attempt to allow her continue, may lead to unwanted litigation by opposition parties that can ruin the efforts and success of Labour Party. Pretense and/or recalcitrant by Hon. Elizsheth U. Ativie to repudiate appeal and neglect this fact is a solid pointer to one fact that she is being sponsored to destabilize Labour Party.
“Finally, the constituency wish to strongly reiterate that it has been resolved that Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen is the rightful candidate elected by the constituency and not Hon. Elizabeth U. Ativie.
“It is our final cry therefrom that Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen should be urgently reinstated. We therefore call on concerned Labour Party authorities and Support groups to prevail on Barr. Julius Abure, the National Labour Party Chairman to reinstate Hon. Murphy P. Imasuen as our candidate for the House of Representative, Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency with immediate effect.”

PoliticsInternal Memo: ... We Are One ... There Is No Victor, No Vanquished. by Easy4real10(op): 9:43pm On Sep 30, 2022
The Peoples' Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State has recieved the Judgement of the supreme court and is hopeful this puts to an end the ugliest episodes of our colourful existence.

As members of the same political party let us now direct our energy towards facing our common opponent with the aim of winning the forth coming General Elections. There has to be an end to litigation

It is unfortunate and regrettable that we had to resolve our disagreement by going to court and as far as the Supreme Court.

Now that the Supreme Court has reached this decision, its time to sheath our swords.

As members of the same political Party, it is now important that we unite and work towards achieving victory.

I will immediately inaugurate a 7 man committee to help in the healing and integration process.

The Leader of the Party and Governor of the State, H.E. Godwin Obaseki from the onset, pre-primaries and throughout the legal journey maintained and insisted that whoever emerges as PDP candidates were his candidates. The Supreme Court judgement today has put to rest who the PDP candidates are. The list uploaded by the NWC into the INEC server contains the authentic candidates of the PDP in the forthcoming General Elections.

Those that were not favoured by the court decision should be rest assured as HE, Godwin Obaseki is ready to work with every one as one big PDP family.

We should exhibit the attitude of no victor nor vanquished.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi
Chairman, PDP Edo State.

By Simeon OSAJIE

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Edo State, yesterday, said a total of 52,013 persons registered for the just concluded Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise that took place between the month of June 2021and January 2022 in the state while 32, 465 were successful, 19,548 was dropped due to double registrations amounting to 37 percent of the entire exercise.

Mr. Timidi Wariowei, in charge of Voter's Education, disclosed this during a Media and Stakeholders Summit with the theme: Roadmap to Credible, Transparent and Peaceful Election in Edo State, organized by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

He said the number dropped after being subjected to Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) where it was discovered that some individuals registered twice.

Wariowei said the figure was one of the least compared to other states where similar thing was done.

Wariowei also said that INEC through their own determine efforts to make elections seamless in the state has created more polling units, increasing it from 2,627 to 4,519.

He further appealed to Journalists in the state to cooperate with the commission to ensure peaceful and credible elections in the state just as he asked them to desist from the temptation of being the ones to announce election results while on election monitoring exercise.

He said a Journalist can quote a figure being displayed by INEC officials at the polling units but cannot declare any candidates winner noting that it is the sole responsibility of INEC to do that.

Speaking also, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, represented by ACP, Head of Operations of the Command, James Chu, said citizens of the state must check their excesses as they plan towards the forthcoming elections adding that the country belongs us and thus must not set it on fire by their actions.

Earlier, the state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Festus Alenkhe urged Journalists to be guided by the Electoral Acts and avoid any acts that will jeopardize the country.

He also called on the law enforcement agencies to see Journalists as partners in progress and should not brutalize them while doing their job as the union has an internal mechanism in handling any Journalists that is found wanting.

CrimeAlleged Subversion Of Justice: Ikhuen-obo Community Sends SOS Message To IGP, ED by Easy4real10(op): 7:19am On Sep 25, 2022
By Simeon Osajie

The people of Ikhuen-Obo Community in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State have cried out seeking quick intervention of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Edo State Government and all other relevant authorities in alleged subversion of Justice.

Chief Priest Efosa Aighobahi and Peter Eze Omorowa on behalf of Ikhuen-Obo Community in a petition through their Solicitors, Trinity Chambers’ made series of criminal allegations, including murder against one ‘Clement Guobadia and his gang’.

According to the petition, Clement Guobadia and two members of his gang were arrested by operatives of the Edo State Police Command.

“The confession of the suspects to the Police implicated some other persons who are providing the dangerous weapons including AK47 with which they carry out their criminal operations”.

On reliable information that the suspects’ cronies were trying to influence outcome of investigation, the people wrote another petition to Force CID, Alagbon, Lagos (Homicide Section) took over the investigation on 29 July, 2022 and were making appreciable progress, it was said.

But bent on obstructing the wheel of Justice, the suspects’ cronies again influenced transfer of the investigation to Force CID, Abuja, on August 29, 2022 and ever since, progress on the investigation has been stalled without any appreciable progress.

“It appears that the obnoxious intention of the allies of the suspects is to hinder and subvert the smooth investigation of the matter at Force CID (Alagbon).”

“Though, the suspects confessed to be in possession of dangerous weapons, no attempt has been made to recover these arms,” the petitioners laments.

“Ever since, attempt has not been made to arrest cronies of the suspects implicated by their confessional statements and reliable evidence against them, they added.

The petitioners noted, that the prevailing situation is a sharp contrast to when Lagos was handling the investigation making appreciable progress  and were already at the verge of going to recover the arms and ammunition including AK47, or arrest those persons implicated in the confessional statements of the suspects.

Expressing more worries, the petitioners pointed out that there was no basis from the beginning to had transferred the investigation  from CID (Alagbon) to Force CID, Abuja as both are of equal status.

“The reason for the mischievous efforts of the cronies of the suspects in manipulating the transfer of the case from Force CID, Alagbon to Abuja is to prevent their arrest having been implicated, the petitioners noted.

Hence, the petitioners say they have no faith in Force CID, Abuja to do justice in investigation of the matter.

They therefore passionately appeal, that the Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Edo State Government, and all other relevant authorities should quickly intervene to get the right justice the matter deserves.

“We therefore on behalf of our clients urge the IGP, Edo State Government, to use their good offices to prevail on this matter, so as to attain the appropriate Justice that this matter deserves.

“Our Clients have suffered a lot of damages and calamity as a result of the criminal activities of the suspects,” the petition stated.

The Petition dated 16th September, 22 was signed by Emmanuel C. Okonkwo Esq. and copied: The Hon. Minister of Interior, and Chairman, Police Service Commission, Abuja.

...A Testament Of Gov Godwin Obaseki's Reforms

By Simeon Osajie

Criticism is one of the most outstanding features differentiating a military regime from a democratically elected government. It is also what distinguishes a tyrannical regime run by a potentate from a democratic government with adherence to the rule of law and tolerance of all shades of opinion.

In a military regime, criticisms are not tolerated, while praise singing is accorded the highest form of reward whether the said praise singing is justified or not.

Criticism could be in form of a cerebral analysis to arrive at balanced judgement, or an outright hostile attack on a government to score cheap political point. Criticism from social critics who mean well for the society are constructive, meant to evaluate and improve governance process for the citizenry.

In the case of the criticisms against the present People's Democratic Party (PDP) government led by Governor Obaseki of  Edo State, there is nothing to show thus far that criticism of the policies and programmes of government by opposition elements are geared towards evaluating and improving governance for the overall benefit of the state and its citizens.

The criticisms that trailed and is still trailing the reforms initiated by the Governor Godwin Obaseki led government of Edo State is a case in point.

When this administration was birthed in 2016,  far reaching policy reforms were initiated at the primary and secondary school levels of education in the state.
Implementation of these reforms spilled over into the second term of the administration which commenced in 2020.

The good thing about these reforms which have been undergoing silent implementation is that they have started bearing fruits which are now so loud that those with hearing impairment can hear. Just recently, the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) released the results of the 2022 May/June Senior Secondary School Certificate examination (SSSCE) with Edo State coming in the first position in Nigeria.

Edo State achieved this feat with 92.8 of the candidates passing five subjects and above at credit level, including English and Mathematics. For the understanding of the lay man on the street, it means that 92.8 person of all those who wrote the May/June WAEC SS3 Examination are qualified for university admission, which is five credits, including English and Mathematics.

Before attaining this feat, Edo State came second in the 2021 WAEC SS3 Examination with 93.5% of the candidates scoring five credits and above in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

It's noteworthy that Edo State has not come out below the third position in WAEC SS3 examination since the inception of the Governor Godwin Obaseki led administration in 2016.

This feat is surely worthy of commendation by all those who mean well for Edo State.

Public policy analysts and political watchers have been wondering why those who have criticized the educational reforms of the Obaseki government have not seen the need to congratulate the government on this achievement described not by a few as laudable.

These analysts and political pundits have admonished these critics to publicly acknowledge the good work the Godwin Obaseki led government is doing and the achievements therein thus far or risk being tagged by Edo people as those seeking the mandate of Edo people just  to recline on the table of the people's resources to appropriate them to themselves and their cronies.

They are also appealing to the warring factions in the PDP to sheath their swords and support Governor Godwin Obaseki to deliver the dividends of democracy to Edo people.

PoliticsRedeployment Of Edo Rec, Vindication Of Edo Pdp, Apc, Prp Allegations? by Easy4real10(op): 12:29pm On Aug 20, 2022

Divergent views have been trailing the news of the redeployment of the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC), Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem to Cross River State.

While some political parties and political gladiators may be jubilating and celebrating the redeployment of Dr. Sinikiem as Edo State INEC REC, some are accusing INEC of bias in their decision.

These divergent opinions must have arisen as result of the several controversies that have dogged the monitoring of the recently conducted political party primaries wherein their candidates emerged for the 2023 general elections.

While some of the political parties and aspirants in the party primaries are giving kudos and commendations to the Edo State INEC REC and his men for monitoring the primary elections in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, others are giving the electoral umpire knocks and accusing the INEC REC of bias and alleged complicity in the organization of parallel congresses in some political parties and availing some aspirants documents to initiate litigations against their party.

A case in point was the petition by an aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), one Prince Lucky Igbinedion to the Edo State Police Command accusing the Edo State INEC REC of allegedly forging INEC report in favour of one Osamudiamen Atu in the Edo State House of Assembly primary election of the APC for Orhionmwon East Constituency held on the 26th of May 2022.

Similarly, the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic party PDP accused the Edo State INEC REC of allegedly forging the party's primary election results and availed same to some members of the party to initiate legal proceedings claiming victory in the primary elections.

In a petition signed by the chairman of the Edo State chapter of PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State, urged the police to investigate the issues raised in the said petition and prosecute if need be. The Edo State PDP followed this petition up with a press statement which was made available to journalists and signed by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, further calling for the prosecution of Edo REC, Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem for alleged forgery.

The Edo State PDP claimed in the said statement that there's no law that insulates INEC agents from investigation and possible prosecution.

According to the statement, "PDP request to the Police is very simple-to investigate and verify documents that Mr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem has been peddling as results of his imaginary Congresses and Primaries.

"The petition is backed by facts and we had initially refrained ourselves because the matter was before the Court. However, now that the Appeal Court in its ruling last week affirmed that the issue of Congresses and Primaries are Political Party's internal affairs, justice has been served in favour of the party".

The Edo State INEC REC was also accused by politicians and political parties in Edo State of alleged inappropriate handling of the voter’s registration exercise which ended on 31 July.

The Edo State chapter of the People's Redemption Party, PRP called for the replacement of the Edo State INEC REC based on alleged corruption exhibited by INEC staff during the voters registration exercise.

In a statement signed by the Edo State chairman of the PRP, Dr. Greg Igbinomwanhia said, "it is highly embarrassing that the bribery allegations in the last voters registration was vividly captured by a national newspaper in the country.

"The newspaper has reported that there was element of corruption during the voters registration with the commission demanding between N1,000 and N5,000 before eligible citizens are allowed to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ahead of the 2023 elections".

The said national newspaper also reported that INEC Head of Voters Registration and Publicity in Edo State, Mr. Timidi Wariowei disputed the allegation of bribery and inducement leveled against the commission, saying it was not true.

However, the Edo State Deputy chairman of the APC, Mr. Henry Tenebe faulted the redeployment of Dr. Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem as the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, accusing the national leadership of INEC of bias noting that it came about as a result of differences he had with leadership of Edo State chapter of PDP and admonished the electoral umpire to as a matter of urgency return Dr. Sinikiem as Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner to absolve itself of impartiality and complicity.

Political pundits and analysts in Edo State view the redeployment of Dr. Sinikiem from Edo as the only option left for INEC, not necessarily because he may be guilty of allegations against him as according to them, politicians have a proclivity of accusing the umpire and its agents of bias against them once the game is not going their way; but for the electoral umpire to extricate itself from accusations of bias by political parties and politicians ahead the 2023 general elections.

The political  pundits and observers also counseled the incoming Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State to be mindful of how he will relate with politicians in the discharge of his duties, stick strictly to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, be transparent in the discharge of his duties and possibly meet with the State Working Committees of political parties in the presence of newsmen while implementing some contentious issues affecting political parties to vindicate himself and the commission in any event of accusations by political parties and politicians.
