By Easy Ekoyatah

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Martins Okoukoni today, 21st February, 2024 said he has withdrawn from the Edo Governorship race and would not be participating in the LP primaries scheduled for Friday February 23rd.

Okoukoni made this known in a letter of withdrawal he personally signed and addressed to Barrister Julius Abure, Labour Party National Chairman and Kelly Ogbaloi, Edo State Labour Party Chairman.

Okoukoni said the "Pay As You Go” style of engagement of the party must not be the basis for politics in Nigeria, adding that his "decision to withdraw at this period has everything to do with the style of the management of the Labour Party."

The statement reads in part: "I wish to inform you of my intension to withdraw from the governorship race in Edo State.

"Mr. Chairman, my decision to withdraw at this period in time has everything to do with the style of the management of our party. Indeed, we still have much to do regarding the approach and decision making of our great party.

"The “Pay as you go” style of engagement must not be the basis for every politics in Nigeria, hence as a man with desire for transformational leadership, it is important to move aside until we are able to produce leadership with vision and mission for our great party," Okoukoni said.

Politics / LP Begin Screening Process For Delegates, Insist No Statutory Or Super Delegates by Easy4real10(m): 2:08pm On Feb 14
By Easy Ekoyatah

Edo State Chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi today (Wednesday 14th February) said the party has commenced the screening process for delegates election/congresses ahead of the party's primary scheduled for February 23, 2024.

Speaking with newsmen in Benin City during a delegates screening exercise held at the party Secretariat, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, Chairman of the 10 man screening committee said the screening is to ensure a fair process for the emergence of delegates for the party’s governorship primary.

Ogbaloi said the screening exercise is a traditionally required item in dealing with the internal politics of the party adding that, "We want those who will eventually become the delegates of our party, who will contest it to be screened and be sure that they are competent in character and otherwise for them to be in the congress and eventually in the election of delegates that will come to the primary."

On his part, Edo State Labour Party Publicity Secretary and Spokesman, Comrade Sam Uroupa said that the screening exercise is to ensure that there is no hijacking of the process by political godfathers adding that there would be no statutory or super delegates.

Uroupa noted that the process will throw up eligible and qualified delegates both at the ward and local government council’s levels for the primary.

"The screening is both for the ward and local government delegates for the primary of our party. It is primarily to ensure that those screened are eligible to qualify for our party delegate.

"The criteria here is that, a person must be a card carrying member with full financial commitment to the party. That means, he or she must be paying his or her party dues and also working for the interest of the party. We required items like LP Identify Card, Voters Card among others to be a bonafide member of the party.

"Noteworthy, these are the people that are going to elect the ward delegates, the ward delegates who in turn are going to elect the LGA delegates, the LGA 7 delegates, who will come and elect the flagbearer of our party.

"This is a process leading to the primary to ensure it is hitch free. This tells you that the process is grassroots, because people from the grassroots are driving the process. They would determine our party's governorship candidate. And the people are to elect who is to be their own delegates and who would stand on behalf of them to go for the primary.

"With this screening, there is no hijacking of the process, there is no godfatherism, no super delegates, and no statutory delegates. The process is completely driven by the people from the ward, by the ordinary card carrying members of our party.

"We are promising that the entire primary is going to be free, fair and credible. The credibility is the foundation we are starting with the screening process now." Uroupa said.

Politics / Group Drags Edo Federal Lawmaker To EFCC Over Corruption by Easy4real10(m): 12:28pm On Feb 10
By Easy Ekoyatah

A pro democracy group, 'Guardians of Democracy and Development Initiative' have petitioned the Member representing Ovia Federal House of Representatives in the National Assembly, Hon. Dennis Idahosa to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) on allegation of Advance Fee fraud.

According to the petition which has been circulated widely, the group relied on a 2015 administrative report by the administration of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, when he was the governor of Edo State.

"We write on behalf of 'Guardians of Democracy and Development Initiative' with reference to the subject matter above. It has been brought to our attentions as a group committed to democratic best practices and sanity in the public space, that Hon. Dennis Idahosa was reported in 2015 by the administration of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, while he was governor of Edo State, to be involved in international fraud which led to unceremonious exit from the State Executive Council as Commissioner for Investments and Public/Private Partnership.

"The State government traced his exit to allegation that Mr. Idahosa was engaged in fraudulent activities (popularly called 419).

"According to the State Government report, the state Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole had received series of petitions, mostly from overseas, alleging that Mr. Idahosa was engaged in fraudulent activities on an industrial scale.

“The petitioners purportedly to be his victims, alleged they had been swindled of huge sums of money. Disturbed and consistent with his zero tolerance for corruption or any conduct that might tarnish the image of Edo State or bring the country to international odium for that matter, Comrade Oshiomhole had late last year (2015) set up a high-level administrative panel to look into the grave allegations discreetly.

"After weeks of forensic investigations, the panel’s findings were startling. Last week, Mr. Idahosa became aware that the administrative panel was on the verge of formally requesting him to answer those weighty charges.

"As a matter of fact, last Thursday (January 29, 2015), Mr. Idahosa had attended APC Mega Presidential rally at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium that was well attended in his capacity as Commissioner. Curiously, he dramatically reappeared barely 24 hours later at the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announcing his defection.

"We do not want to join the speculation that Mr. Idahosa’s defection was designed to preempt the report of the administrative panel or his action motivated by an external offer of protection.

“However, in the name of decency and justice and international image of our country, we can only encourage Mr. Idahosa to come out in the open and answer the sundry allegations of 419 leveled against him.

“Otherwise, the long arms of the law, though may be delayed by his new powerful friends, will ultimately prevail,” the report stated."

Furthermore, group disclosed that, Edo State government added that, "shortly after the above report was made public, Idahosa made a sudden u-turn and returned to the fold of All Progressives Congress"

The anti corruption group lamented that, Idahosa was later elected a member of Federal House of Representatives.

"Presently, he is contesting for the governorship of Edo State, despite the sordid story concerning the serious weight of Edo State 2015 administrative report which indicted him.

"In the light of these developments, your office is duty bound to invite him to clarify that he is, or is not a person of corrupt antecedent.

"Mr. Chairman would agree that these allegations are very weighty, especially coming from a State Government. It is therefore a matter of patriotic duty that it is thoroughly investigated. And since the State Government led by Adams Oshiomhole (now Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) claimed that it received several petitions and also have a Panel Report thereto, the Commission may in addition to other of its investigative strategies call for those documents and invite His Excellency Senator Adams Oshiomhole. This is particularly in line with the powers and duties of the EFCC.

"We are disturbed by the open knowledge of Mr. Idahosa’s activities in Canada where he had sojourned for several years, before his unceremonious return to Nigeria.

"More disturbing is the fact that, Idahosa has gone ahead to occupy public offices and has been cleared by the APC now to contest for the highest office in Edo State under the Political Platform whose government allegedly indicted him for fraud.

"Then, there is an odious dimension to it, which your commission should unravel. For instance, Nigerians may wish to know whether the State Government willfully lied, or it is the case of a criminal who has settled the political class and his 'sins' are 'forgiven.'

"The unraveling of this possible criminal riddle is the task before you, Mr. Chairman. And this could also lead to a resolution as to whether the Edo State Government of 2015 willfully defamed a person and lied to the public which are offences.

"We urge you to act in your usual swift and firm manner to reassure Nigerians that persons of criminal antecedents will not be allowed in public offices. This investigation may also lay to rest, these allegations if they can no longer be substantiated. We await your action and report," the group lamented.

When newsmen put a call across to Prince Kassim Afegbua, spokesperson to Hon. Dennis Idahosa, he laughed over it and said, 'such documents does not exist'.

Politics / PDP Adhoc Delegates: Ogie Vasco Is An Impostor, Not Known To Us, Says Edo PDP by Easy4real10(m): 11:58am On Feb 08
By Simeon OSAJIE

Edo State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has dissociated itself from the activities of one Ogie Vasco who the party claimed is illegally parading himself as the State Publicity of the Party.

The9jaTREND reports that the State Assistant State Publicity Secretary of the party, Dr. Bolaji Ojebuoboh in a press statement made available to journalists said Ogie Vasco a meddlesome interloper, working with counter forces to undermine Edo PDP.

The statement added that at no time was he (Ogie Vasco) elected State Publicity Secretary of the party and must be disregarded and ignored.

According to Dr. Ojebuoboh's statement, "Our attention has been drawn to an illegal and incredibly ridiculous statement purportedly issued by one Oge Vasco who is unlawfully parading himself as the State Publicity Secretary of Ihe Peoples Democratic Party (POP) in Edo State.

"We would have ordinarily ignored the six paragraph divisive scribbling filled with false and baseless ramblings on the party's recently concluded ward delegate congress which took place simultaneously across the State, but for the sake of clarity it is important to state that the rabble-rouser is an impostor and is not known to the PDP in Edo State.

"More so, signing off the statement from an address that is not known to be the address of the Edo PDP Secretariat further gives him out as a meddlesome interloper and an agent of destabilization, which should be ignored by all party members and other stakeholders".

Going further the statement added: "In all modesty, the recent congress held last Sunday stands as one of the best congresses ever organised in the recent history of the State, but Vasco would not know that as he has never participated or witnessed a congress before, it was peaceful and credible wah party members electing their delegates with keen supervision of the Committee set up by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Party.

"It is also important to clarify that the materials used for the delegates election across the State came trom the 3-man Ad-hoc Ward Delegate Electoral Committee led by Enugu Stale Governor, Peter Mbah, and its distribution was handled at the PDP State Secretarial, hence Vasco's claims are not only unfounded but divisive and misleading.

"If he was a genuine member of the party, he would know the location of the party Secretariat and would have been able to see the materials when they came because all eligible members of the Party have access to the Secretariat, while the Delegate Committee from the Party's National leadership were the ones in custody of the materials.

"Is it not even perplexing that same aspirants are opposed to the Congress? Were they contesting as delegates themselves? And who appointed Ogie Vasco as the spokesperson of the aspirants if not for mischief and the crumbs that may fall from the table of any of the aspirants?

"If Vasco was by any means informed, he would have known that Congress proceedings are determined by the party's national leadership, not the aspirants. Rather than showcasing his dorkiness, he should go and study the guidelines as issued by the National Working Committee in line with the Party's Constitution.

"We are however not surprised at the antics of Ogie Vasco and his ilk who are working with counter forces to weaken the party. We know that their game is to undermine the party in pursuit of their pecuniary interest.

"Their attempts to derail us from retaining Osadebay Avenue will not succeed. We are aware of their anti-party agenda; the same anti-party activities witnessed during the State House of Assembly election which PDP members gallantly quelled and eventually retained the maximum seats in the House.

"I want to Inform Ogie Vasco and his paymasters that the same gallant party members who defeated them in the past remain resolute and united, and are surefooted and ready to batter them to submission again in the coming governorship election in the State.

Politics / Edo 2024 Guber: YEEI Calls For Equality, Inclusive Leadership, by Easy4real10(m): 3:06pm On Feb 03
...Advocates For Generational Diversity In Candidate Selection

By Easy Ekoyatah

The Youth for Equity and Empowerment Initiative (YEEI) has emphasized that the process of selecting candidates plays a pivotal role in comprehending power dynamics within political parties.

While noting that this selection process not only influences the performance of parties but also significantly contributes to the quality and direction of democratization within the parties. “This impact is particularly notable concerning values such as participation, competition, responsiveness, and representation.”

YEEI is a registered incorporated trustee under the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria, established in December 2013. Its primary mandate is to encourage and support more young individuals, including women, to actively participate in political offices and positions across Nigeria.

The9JaTREND reports that a political analyst and representative of YEEI, Onaivi Ojo-Ashipa in a statement made available to newsmen said, a comprehensive study indicates that individuals from the 1950s generation have consistently been prominent contenders for the positions of State Governor and Deputy Governor in Edo State, and that the trend is expected to continue in the upcoming Edo 2024 gubernatorial election.

YEEI noted that over the past 24 years, the governorship and deputy governorship roles in Edo State have predominantly been occupied by individuals from the 1950s generation. “They have successfully held these positions while in their 40s through 50s, and there is a prevailing momentum for their continuation for another eight years.”

According to the group, a retrospective look at the roster of governorship, deputy governorship and governorship candidates in the last 24 years reveals a pattern of representation from The Baby Boomer Generation (1946-1964), as stated below:

“Governor Lucky Igbinedion born in 1957 became governor at the age of 42, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe born in 1955 became deputy governor at 44 years, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor born in 1951 was elected as governor of Edo State at the age of 56, Mr. Lucky Imasuen born in 1960 was deputy governor at the age of 50.

“Senator Adams Aliu Oshiomole born in 1952 became governor of Edo State at the age of 56, Dr. Pius Odubu born in 1957 became deputy governor at the age of 51, Mr. Godwin Obaseki born in 1957 became governor at the age of 59, Senator Roland Owie born in 1945 was governorship candidate at the age of 58, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd) born in 1954 was governorship candidate at the age of 58 while Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu born in 1962 was governorship candidate at the age of 54.

“The upcoming party primaries indicate a significant number of aspirants from the Golden Age Generation of the 1950s competing for the gubernatorial position.”

While acknowledging their active participation, YEEI advocates for equality, diversity and representation spanning across different generations.

“The initiative proposes the consideration of younger generations or a blend of both older and younger generations as flag bearers and running mates in the forthcoming Edo 2024 Governorship Election,” YEEI added.

YEEI, through its spokesperson Onaivi Ojo-Ashipa, emphasized that this proposition is not an act of resistance or revolution against the 1950s golden age generation but rather a modest plea for a commitment from political leaders in Edo State to actively embrace and practice inclusive leadership.

The organization urged political party leaders, stakeholders, and influencers to use demographic insights provided as a basis for planning and decision-making during the selection of flag bearers in the upcoming party primaries, also stating that this approach takes into account the sensitivity of Edo citizens' voting behavior and responsiveness, as observed in the recent general elections.

The Youth for Equity and Empowerment Initiative (YEEI) today, 1st February, 2024 said for inclusiveness and equity, political party leaders, stakeholders and influencers should use demographic insights provided as a basis for planning and decision-making during the selection of flag bearers in the upcoming party's primaries.

Politics / Aspirant Who Cannot Afford Nomination Forms Lack Capacity To Contest - Edo LP by Easy4real10(m): 11:40am On Feb 01
By Easy Ekoyatah

The Edo State chapter of Labour Party, (LP), has said that any governorship aspirants who cannot afford the fee for Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms lacks the capability to run for gobernatorial election.

The State Chairman of the party, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi stated this at a press conference in Benin City, ahead of the party's governorship primary election slated for February 22, 2024.

While speaking on the N30 million fees for the purchase of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms, charged by the party among other issues, Comrade Ogbaloi noted that the party's fee is the lowest among the three major political parties contesting the election.

Recall that 18 governorship aspirants on the platform of the Labour PArty had last week protested against the N30 Million fees for the nomination forms.

The aspirants, however, appealed to the national leadership of the party to reduce the fees to between N1million and N5million, noting that the N5million for Expression of Interest and N25 million for the Nomination Forms does not align with the principles and public perception of the party.

He however explained that the cost of elections into political offices in Nigeria is quite expensive as witnessed from the recent general elections.

According to Ogbaloi, "Political party funding is a challenge. The sale of forms is a major source through which political parties are funded.

"Aside being qualified to contest election, aspirants must also be ready to show capability and capacity to fund campaigns and other election requirements.

"A lot of issues that may arise as a result of primaries and election itself which has to do with litigation arising from such activities as well as other logistics issues, make it imperative for the parties to charge a reasonable fee like ours.

"So that it can adequately discharge its responsibilities during and after the elections.

"Therefore, any aspirant who cannot afford the fee lacks the capacity to run for the governorship election.”

The Edo LP Chairman also disclosed that two aspirants have so far bought the party forms, a man and a woman, urging others to do same.

He however, appealed to the governorship aspirants of the party to make the necessary sacrifice by participating in the exercise, assuring that the party is determined to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants leading to the emergence of a credible candidate.

He also disclosed that the party has reduced the fee for women by 50 percent in order to ensure their participation in the governorship election.

Ogbaloi however, denied the allegation that the party received the sum of N500 million from the state government in order to feature a neophyte as her candidate for the election.

He noted that the guideline currently released by the leadership of the party in respect to governorship election in the state falls in line with the provision of the constitution and the Electoral Act.

Politics / Edo South PDP Disowns Imasogie Purported Endorsement Of Ighodalo by Easy4real10(m): 6:10pm On Jan 20
...Says Edo South leader is Barr. Nosa Ogieva-Okunbor

By Osajie Simeon

The Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo South Senatorial District has warned gubernatorial
aspirants on the platform of the party to be wary of the antics of one Dickson Imasogie, declaring that the latter is not the Senatorial leader of the PDP in Edo South.

This is contained in a statement personally signed by Mr. Anthony Peter Ihimi, Secretary, PDP Edo South Senatorial District and made available to journalists today, in Benin City, Edo State capital.

The PDP Secretary in Edo South Senatorial District said Mr. Dickson Imasogie had on Wednesday 17th January, 2024 during the declaration of Barr. Asue Ighodalo claimed to be the leader of Edo South Senatorial District, which is a total falsehood.

Ihimi accused Dickson Imasogie of going further to endorse and declare full support of the Senatorial District' for an aspirant, Barr. Asue Ighodalo.

He said Owere Dickson Imasogie's statement were personal and for himself alone adding that the leadership of the PDP Edo South Senatorial District at this time is vested on Barr. Nosa Ogieva-Okunbor, the State Vice Chairman (South), who alone in consultation with the leadership can make official statements on behalf of the district.

The statement reads in parts: "Our attention has been drawn to remarks made by one Dickson Imasogie on Wednesday 17th January, 2024 at the declaration of Gubernatorial Aspiration of Barr. Asue Ighodalo in which he claimed to be the leader of Edo South Senatorial District.

"This is to rightly inform the public that Dickson Imasogie is not the Edo South Senatorial leader of the PDP, and as such does not, and has never had the constitutional authority and mandate to speak on behalf of the District, its leadership, or its members.

"His statements were personal and for himself alone. The constitution of our party is very clear and unambiguous. The leadership of PDP in Edo South Senatorial District at this time is vested on Barr. Nosa Ogieva-Okunbor, the State Vice Chairman (South), who alone in consultation with the leadership can make official statements on behalf of the district.

"We want to use this medium to warn all selfish and self-seeking politicians to desist forthwith from making statements intended to mislead our teeming supporters and the general public.

"We specifically advise Dickson Imasogie to henceforth stop arrogating to himself the power and authority of senatorial leadership."

Ihimi noted that Edo South Senatorial District is not opposed to any Gubernatorial Aspirant's ambition, as it traditionally offers a level playing field to all aspirants seeking the party's candidacy for elective office.

Politics / We Moved Edo From 14th To One Of Nigeria’s Top 5 Economies In 7 Yrs - Obaseki by Easy4real10(m): 9:15am On Jan 08
By Simeon Osajie

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the ease of doing business reforms and other economic policies and programmes implemented by his administration over the past seven years, has repositioned the State as one of the top five economies in the country.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the governor said his government will sustain efforts to promote economic expansion, through sustained investments across various sectors of the State’s economy, necessary to drive growth and development.

A report by Economic Confidential, a subsidiary of PR Nigeria, has declared seven states, including Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Kaduna, Kwara, Oyo and Edo as the most viable states in Nigeria for 2022.

The report was compiled from figures released by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics and the Federal Account Allocation Committee.

The governor said, “Seven years ago, Edo ranked between 13th and 14th in terms of GDP in the country. Today, we are a clear 5th. We're top ten in the country in terms of the size of our economy and growth. But what is important is the growth that has occurred since we took over.

“We were able to achieve this by encouraging investment inflow that has contributed to the economy of the State. It’s the people as well as the activities of government that drive the economy. We have moved Edo State from the era where the government was doing things themselves to one in which the government is creating the enabling environment for people to come and invest and do business in the State.”

On plans to sustain the gains recorded in the growth of the State’s economy in the New Year, Obaseki said the government will continue to pursue reforms to facilitate economic expansion and other enablers.

He said: “We have made an allocation in the 2024 budget to drive economic and employment enablers. These will enhance the ease of doing business and also facilitate the injection of private capital into the economy to create more opportunities for our teeming youth population.

“Some of these include investment in our legacy projects including the Benin Enterprise Park, the Benin Port Project, and the Trailer Park projects, among others, which will spur economic expansion and growth,” Obaseki added.

He pointed out that as a Catholic priest, he is trained and equipped to serve adding that he is ready to serve the good people of Edo State.

According to the Esan South-East Local Government born catholic priest, “I received series of calls from well-meaning Edo people and Nigerians across party lines beckoning on me to contest the forthcoming governorship election in our dear state. After very extensive consultation and consideration, I am pleased to inform you that I am giving Edo people and members of the movement an affirmative gesture. I have considered it, and I am very much available and ready to serve.

Nairaland / General / Benin Palace War Against Hrh Prof. Gregory Akenzua, The Enogie Of Evbuobanosa by Easy4real10(m): 9:32pm On Nov 30, 2023
The unusual scenario playing out in Benin Kingdom between the Benin monarch against some Enogie on trump up charges has the attention of many many citizens of Edo south senatorial district and even beyond. The Gestapo style operation of the use of the police for personal vendetta by the Benin Monarch was brazenly demonstrated in the state capital on Friday 21st of November, 2023, when His Royal Highness, Professor Gregory Akenzua, a renowned Paediatrician and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin and also a former Pro-Chancellor of Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, was arrested in his bedroom by armed policemen from Zone 5, Benin City, early in the morning and driven straight to an Evboriaria, Magistrate, Benin City, for prosecution at the behest of the Benin palace.

Reliable sources revealed that the Enogie was to be remanded in Oko Prison while the Presiding Magistrate was to proceed on annual leave and the retired professor’s bail application would be heard by the same Magistrate on resumption from leave. That would have been a great and tortuous ordeal for the Octogenarian Enogie.

However, the recent incarceration against the Enogie met with a stumbling block as some well-meaning Edo citizens mobilized to save the professor from an orchestrated subterranean ordeal planned for him. After about two hours arguments and counter arguments in the court room, the Enogie, who is also a very senior member of the Benin Royal family, was eventually granted bail after he was arraigned in court:

“for impersonation and arrogating to himself the title of a traditional ruler in Edo South Senatorial District, an offence which is punishable under Section 20, Sub-section 6(a), (b),(c), section 20, sub-Section 7 and section 28, sub-section 6 of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict NO. 16 of 1979.”

What the Enogie’s traducers, prosecutors and defamers did was to only quote the section of the 1979 EDICT that suit their whims and caprices to slander his unblemished character while undermining the section of the Edict that deals with who has the power and prerogative to suspend any erring traditional ruler or chief, and the processes for doing so. They know that the Enogie committed no offence and that the so called suspension did not follow due process. Such suspension is not only ultra vires of the 1999 Constitution as amended, and also a nullity. Nothing in the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979 empowers any traditional council or traditional ruler to suspend or depose any traditional ruler or chief. Part IV, SECTION 28(1) of the Edict states, inter alia:

'The Executive Council may withdraw the approval of the appointment of, or suspend, or depose, any traditional ruler, regent, traditional chief, or any honourary chief whether appointed before or after the commencement of this law, if it is satisfied that such withdrawal, suspension, or deposition is required according to customary law or is necessary in the interest of peace or order or good government'.

From the foregoing, it is clear that no traditional council or traditional ruler has the authority to suspend or depose any traditional ruler or chief that has been gazetted by the government. That authority is the exclusive preserve of the state executive council headed by the Governor of the State.

It is pertinent and on point here to state that the only thing the Enogie of Evbuobanosa is being maligned for is that he is one of the 85 Enigie in Edo south senatorial district who wrote a letter in November, 2022, to the governor requesting for the constitution and inauguration of the Traditional Councils in the seven local government councils in Edo South Senatorial District.

The letter also requested that the statutory allocation to the councils be paid directly to the seven traditional councils as required by law.

Before the ascension to the throne by the present Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II, Enigie and Palace chiefs used to receive stipend from the government through the Benin Traditional Council but since the past seven years, no Enogie or Palace chief has received a kobo from the council, even though monthly allocation is paid to the Benin Traditional Council (BTC). The palace has appropriated all monies paid to the Benin Traditional Council. Last year alone, the Benin Traditional Council received more than one Billion Naira. This has been so for the past seven years without payment of stipends to Enigie and Chiefs.

The Enogie of Evbuobanosa, HRH Professor Gregory Akenzua was illegally and unconstitutionally suspended on the 2nd April, 2023, by the Oba of Benin, at a so-called “Open mediation gathering" in the palace after the Benin Monarch surreptitiously instigated some of the elders and youths in the community to level spurious and unfounded allegations against him. He was not given any chance to defend himself.

THE Enogie of Egbaen-Siluko road, HRH Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbaen was earlier, in a similar faction, suspended illegally and unconstitutionally without due process and up till now he has not been given opportunity to defend himself of the false allegations leveled against him. Suspension as we know it, is usually for a short period for investigation of the allegations made against someone. It is almost a year now since the two Enigie were suspended illegally and unconstitutionally.

The fact that the two Enigie were not given the opportunity to defend themselves negates the principles of fair hearing and natural Justice as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. The two Enigie hold traditional titles that are hereditary and are subject to the rule of primogeniture. Customarily, in Benin, any title holder whether hereditary or non hereditary cannot be stripped of the title conferred on him. If he commits an offence, he may be asked to stay away from the palace but he is never stripped of his title. The title remains with him for life. In the case of hereditary title holders the title devolves on the first male child on death.

Enigie are not enemies of the Oba as they recognize his suzerainty over the entire Benin kingdom. They want to serve the Oba in the most loyal way, but a situation in which Enigie are treated like slaves leaves a lot to be desired. Since the advent of the present dispensation Enigie are made to remove their headgears and kneel for 2 to 3 hours while addressing the Oba; and on the slightest provocation some Enigie have been disrobed publicly and made to go home with only underwear. It appears that there is a grand design to humiliate, subjugate and reduce Enigie to nonentities, and this has never happened in Benin history.

The recent practice of Oba Ewuare II to withhold approval indefinitely for the eldest son of a deceased Enogie to assume the title of the deceased father which automatically devolves on him after performing the required funeral obsequies has never been the practice in the annals of Benin kingdom. There are currently about 12 heirs apparent who have completed the funeral obsequies of their fathers, some over five years now, but are put in abeyance for no apparent reasons even though SECTION 22 SUBSECTIONS (5), (6), (6a) and (6b) of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law clearly state that such approvals should not be withheld and in the event of being withheld, the Executive Council can intervene to review such decisions to withhold approval and substitute its own decision thereon. Strangely, some Enigie who were recently installed were taken to several shrines all over the kingdom and were compelled to swear to oath of allegiance to the Oba instead of the usual ceremonial pledge of loyalty (Igbeken). This has never been the practice in the kingdom from time immemorial. These are practices designed to humiliate and intimidate the Enigie and also their forced loyalty.

Recently, the heir to the Dukedom of Ugo N’ Eki was invited to the palace and was handed over to the police at Oba Market Police Station for detention over false allegation of installing himself as Enogie.

Leadership, whether political, traditional or communal is derived from the people and as such must be responsive to the yearnings and aspirations of the people. All traditional title holders, such as Obis, Emirs, Obas and the likes, are subject to modern laws in a democratic dispensation and none of them can appropriate absolute power to themselves to determine the destiny of others. The scenario playing out today in Benin kingdom prominently, almost with prognathous tendency, represents an atavism that hinted on something bearing semblance to the 15th century unacceptable practices regenerated in the 21st century. Is this a case of the more civilized a society is, the more susceptible it is to its buried atavism?

Enigie in Edo South are not seeking to undermine the authority of the Benin monarch as the roles prescribed for them in the 1979 Edict do not run counter to his prescribed power. The functions of the traditional councils established for each Local Government Council Area are spelt out in PART V11 of the Edict thus:
[a] to formulate general proposals by way of advice to the local government;
[b] where applicable, to harmonise the activities of such local government
through discussion of problems affecting them generally and by giving
advice and guidance thereon to such local government;
[c] where applicable, to co-ordinate development plan of such local governments by joint discussion and advice;
[d] where requested by the Executive governor, or as the case may require, by one or all the local governments in its area, to assist in the assessment of rates in consultation with such local governments in the area and their subsequent collections;
[e] to give support in arts and culture;
[f] to assist in the maintenance of order;
[g] to advice on any matter referred to it by the state or Federal government;

[h] to make representation or express opinions to the state government or
any other organizations on behalf of the local government;
[j] to advice on questions relating to chieftaincy matters and control of traditional titles.

The erstwhile absence of traditional councils in the LGAs of Edo South is the major reason local government headquarters in Edo South, such as Iguobazuwa, Abudu, Idogbo, Ehor, Egor, and Okada, are not at par with Ekpoma, Uromi, Ubiaja, Ewohinmi, Igueben, Irrua, Auchi, Fugar among others in Edo Central and North senatorial Districts.

Politics / It Is Easier To Manage Our Diversity Than Our Differences - Fr. Obinyan by Easy4real10(m): 3:19pm On Nov 26, 2023
By Simeon OSAJIE

A frontline 2024 Governorship Aspirant and the Parish Priest of St. Francis Catholic Church, Benin City, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Andrew Obiyan has said that it was easier to manage our diversity than manage our differences.

Dr. Obinyan made the declaration on Friday 24th, November, 2023 while receiving an Award of Excellence conferred on him by Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) held in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The University of Ibadan graduate of Philosophy and a Ph.D holder from the prestigious University of Benin, one time Chairman of Edo Pilgrims Welfare Board, a multi talented Priest who has been able to transform St. Francis Catholic Church into a remarkable state of the art asset using the descerning strength to bring Christ healing grace to the people through the power of the Holly Spirit noted that he was at the event not as a person but on behalf of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin.

Fr. Obinyan priestly ministry credited with divine miracles for which many have described him as a charismatic and motivational preacher, a motivator who innovates new approaches to complex pastoral challenges thereby healing broken hearted souls and healing ailing families and ultimately bringing the best out of hopeless family situations and restoring them to healthy living, thereby reengineering a healthy, productive and vibrant society, in his acceptance speech thanked the organizers of the event for finding him worthy for the award.

"I stand here on behalf of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City as a priest and an integral part of the Presbytarium. I have no life of my own, and so, I want to first and foremost thank God for this day and thank the Coalition of Registered Political Parties for giving me this great honour and the other awardees present here.

"As a Reverend Father of the Catholic Mission, I am trained and wired not to allow anyone to sound my trumpet and we are not encouraged to sound our trumpet and so when I was approached with the idea of the award, I felt reluctant because I felt it was not necessary but when I gave it a second thought and prayed about it particularly when the awardees are drawn from different walks of life and not about me as a person, but about the impart that has been made and in recognition of that impart, so I was favourably disposed to be here and I feel eminently privileged to be here today to be honoured.

"What we say as Ministers in Luke 17 - 10, we are unworthy servants. We have only done what is expected of us and so I disclaim any right to what I have done but give all the glory to God Almighty and I thank God for making me realize increasingly that we are mere vessels," he said.

Going further, Dr. Obinyan added, "I would like to say that as we prepare for the Edo 2024 governorship election, let us remember that as Edo people and as one people under God, we are too small to divide along tribal lines and I also think that we are beautiful enough to remain one. We should therefore endeavor to manage our diversity because it is easier to do that than manage our differences.

"When God wants to bless Edo six million people, He searches for the right person with the right spirit, generous and kind hearted, selfless person to dispense the blessings that are heaped upon one man who is so blessed that we call a governor. So let us together pray and be honest in our search. Let us pray that our discerner will not break down so that we are able to truly elect and support that man we think will be able to dispense these blessings".

Among other awardees are Dr. Osahon Enabulele, Hon. Anemero Dekeri, a member representing Etsako Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Hon. Ernest Abegbe, Pastor Peter Ayo Olowojoba and Hon. Christopher Osakwe, the Deputy Chief of Staff to Delta State Government.

Politics / Deplorable State Of FG Roads: Edo PDP Describes Umahi’s Comment As Unfortunate, by Easy4real10(m): 9:27pm On Sep 04, 2023
By Osajie Simeon

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described WhatsApp message, credited to the Minister for Works, Engr. Dave Umahi concerning granting approval for intervention by the Edo State government, in respect of the deplorable state of the Federal roads as unfortunate and insensitive to the plight of the people plying the roads.

In a press statement issued by the State Chairman of the party, Dr Tony Aziegbemi noted that the minister’s comment was a mockery and disrespect to the feelings of those who have lost their loved ones due to the inability of the APC led Federal Government to live up to its responsibilities for the past eight years.

According to Dr. Aziegbemi, “The comment credited to the Minister for Works is unfortunate and reckless. How do you grant approval for a State Government to intervene on federal projects which you claimed have already been awarded to contractors through WhatsApp? One is forced to ask if the contracts awarded to the contractors were done through WhatsApp messages?

“It is most worrisome that such a comment is coming from a Minister who was once a State Governor. Considering the way people are suffering on the roads on daily basis and the fact that a lot of people have lost their loved ones along these roads turned death traps, the attempt by the Minister to trivialize such a matter is insensitive.

“The Edo State Government under Governor Godwin Obaseki, has made several representations to the Federal Ministry of Works for approval to intervene in carrying out palliative measures on the Federal roads to no avail.

“The Edo State PDP hereby calls on the Minister to put aside playing to the gallery and face the business of making live more bearable for Nigerians.”

Politics / Fix Federal Roads In Edo Or Else – PDP Chairman Urges Presidency by Easy4real10(m): 6:23pm On Aug 18, 2023
…says these are indicators of systematic failure of government on the part of FG

By Osajie Simeon

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has vowed to block all entrances into the state roads from the federal government roads until it takes the necessary actions on reconstructing and rehabilitating them.

The party's chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi made this known in Benin while speaking on the successes recorded during the party's local government campaign rally in Edo North and Central Senatorial District respectively of the State.

He said the abandoning of the federal roads in the state is a clear manifestation of the enormous hatred the federal government has for the state Governor and Edolites.

Aziegbemi said due to the deplorable conditions of the federal government roads, motorists spend many hours on the roads and in order to get to their destinations, result to taking the state roads, which thereafter put those state roads in a bad shape.

"We noticed something very sad and criminal in nature, which is, all federal roads in Edo State, are not motorable.

"They are in extremely bad shapes. Those are the videos I said I was going to send to you. Between Ebele and Uromi, one of the members of my campaign team, counted 459 trailers lined up on that road, no movement, why? because of the bad spots.

"The Sobe-Oluku Benin road, a trailer fell there, people spent several hours on that road. Is it the Benin-Auchi road, around the Ekpoma axis, around the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and you don't even go there?

"So, you start wondering, why is the federal government so wicked to Edo people? What did we do to them? Edo State is a transport hub for the country. If the roads are not good, you can imagine the man hours lost, the hygiene situations on those roads, the goods that get perished on those roads, you will see the video.

"Some people will tell you that they have been on those roads for the past seven days. Where are they taking their bath? Where are they using as their restroom? How are they feeding? Did they make allowances for those seven days on the roads, I doubt. Gentlemen of the Press, I have never seen anything like this in my life. If I didn't go and somebody told me, I will not believe.

"Those roads were criminally neglected by the APC-led administration just to punish Edo people and we are sounding this warning.

"Because of the bad state of federal roads in Edo State, the trucks now divert into state roads and d our roads.

"So, we must protect the roads that are being done by Edo tax payer’s money on Edo roads.

"So, we are going to block all entrances into Edo State roads from federal government roads in the state until the federal government takes the necessary actions on reconstructing and rehabilitating the federal government roads in the state.

"Is it the Benin-Sepale road? I don't know when any of you have passed that road of a recent. It is like there was war. I am sure even Ukraine as we speak, have better roads than federal roads in Edo State.

"As I said, we are giving notice, going to block all entrances into the state to draw the attention of the federal government to take this issue seriously because we can't continue with this way, we can't.

"The GDP is being affected with this bad deplorable federal roads in the state", Aziegbemi said.

Aziegbemi thanked the people of the state for their patience adding that the state governor will do its best to fix the state roads to make life easy for them.

"We can't thank the people of the state enough for their patience with the federal government.

"The Edo State government will continue to look after their interest and maintain all State roads", Aziegbemi said.

While speaking on behalf of the Campaign Council, the Chairman, Senator Odion Ugbesia said he wholeheartedly accepts the offer and is willing to take the campaigns across all the nooks and crannies of the entire 4,519 polling units in the state.

If my acceptance as the Chairman of the Campaign Council is one way of rebuilding the process, contributing to the peace process, so be it.”

On the allegation that PDP has already perfected plans to write figures for the September 2, Local Government Election, the Chairman of the Campaign Council, Senator Odion Ugbesia said, “If we plan to write figures, why are we campaigning? If we already know that we are going to write figures, while bother to set up Campaign Council, why bother to move around to campaign?”

Also speaking, Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku described the party as a party that is closest to the grassroots and assured that they are ready to go round to tell the people what the governor has done, adding that the party does not believe in rigging.

By Simeon Simeon

Ahead of the forthcoming Local Government Council Election slated for 2nd September, 2023, the Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has said that its state wide campaign will commence in the next couple of days.

This was revealed by the state chairman of the party, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi in a press statement he personally issued and signed and made available to newsmen.

According Dr. Aziegbemi, “plans have been concluded to embark on a campaign tour of the 192 Wards and 4,519 Polling Units in Edo State for the upcoming local government elections.

"We are starting from Akoko Edo local government on the 3rd of August, 2023. All the necessary arrangements have been concluded.

"It is in this light that we enjoin members and indeed Edolites to see through the blatant falsehood and character assassination that is characteristic of all those that do not wish the PDP well. I assure them of total failure.”

Going further, Aziegbemi, "they have continued to deploy underhand tactics and sleight of hand in service of parochial and selfish interests, they are hell bent on dragging the party on a path of perdition. From their action, it is clear that they have long exited the party in spirit and in deed.

"They are the ones that went to court to delegitimize the candidacy of members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming Local Government Council elections. As the case is already in court, we won’t speak to the merits or demerits of their case.

"We want to assure our candidates, teeming supporters and the good people of Edo State that preparations for a successful council election is in top gear.

"Only PDP can deliver real change in Edo State. We have a clear plan to turn our economy around and give all our people the best chance of success. It is a plan to create more jobs, give more hope to young people and to give families across the 18 local government areas more financial security and peace of mind.

"We must restate that His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki and PDP are desirous of a state that is prosperous, peaceful, united, secure and healthy. A partnership built on cooperation and collaboration.”

This view held by many but given vent to by Edo state Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Tony Aziegbemi in a statement issued in Benin City to mark the 66th birthday celebration of the governor said Mr. Obaseki has displayed the highest level of knowledgeability about good governance when rated alongside his contemporary governors in Nigeria.

"Governor Obaseki's knowledgability about governance today dwarfed those of his contemporaries, thus taking Edo state to twenty years and more far and above other states in Nigeria, no doubt then that Edo state government's policies have become a course of study for other states.”

According to Dr. Aziegbemi, "within the space of six to seven years, Governor Obaseki has been able to redesign, modernize, and actualize with a touch of definite progression, the dreams of the founding fathers of Edo state.

"Here is a governor of divine instinct whose people oriented policies has taken Edo state into the future. His decision to delve into the future of ICT which nations like China and India made a priority will lay a foundation of technology breakthrough for our teaming youths.

"Governor Obaseki's investment in theTechnology hub, the Edo Tech Park, where youths are trained in software engineering will, in the next five years, produce about 15,000 trained software engineers that would generate programmes for companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple and others.

"This is an investment designed, not for today but for the future. It will, as a matter of fact, secure the future of our youths. While the youths of other states will be looking for employment, our own youths will be employers of labour.”

The Edo PDP Chairman said, "Governor Obaseki discovered early enough that no sustainable growth could ever be achieved without power, thus the establishment of the Ossiomo Power Plant that is generating about 95 Megawatt of electricity to guarantee power 24/7 in the state. The beauty of the Ossiomo Power Plant is that it is 100% private initiative and a product of the much talked about MOU. Government offices, Industrial sectors, Street lights and other points of hospitalities are quality testimonies for constant power supply.

"Another legacy project of the Obaseki government is in the education sector that has brought about the novel, EdoBest, which has been adjudged to be the bedrock of this administration. Governor Obaseki's intervention at the Primary and post-primary levels are yielding results. The school of nursing, the College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi, among other state owned post primary institutions has been upgraded to international standard in structure and in content.

"As a result of his forward looking policies, Governor Godwin Obaseki earned international recognition as Edo State was the only sub-national that was invited to the UN summit in New York recently. Similarly, Edo State was the only sub-national that was invited to South-Korea, for the Smart City Conference which included seminars and workshops.

“Another legacy project is the first Modula Refineries in Nigeria, a thought-line of Obaseki's administration which has created gainful employment for our teaming youths. Another first is the provision of free internet service working around selected areas in Benin City. Prompt payment of salaries, including the introduction of 13 months’ salary payment to workers at a whopping 40,000 Naira Minimum wage, payable by only Edo state.”

Continued, Dr. Aziegbemi added: "despite all the landmark achievements made by the Godwin Obaseki administration, its policies are the most criticized. His people grossly misunderstood but thank God for his life. He is so determined, focused and undeterred by whatever criticism as, according to him, for as long as whatever I do is in the interest of the people of Edo State, posterity will vindicate me”.

…Eulogizes Esan Enijies for their initiatives

By Simeon OSAJIE

The Benin Monarch, Omo N’Bba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin Kingdom has been commended for receiving the Esan Enijies and members of the Esan Okpa Initiatives who were in his palace on an advocacy visit on the need to have an Edo Governor of Esan extraction come 2024 gubernatorial election.

A frontline Edo 2024 Governorship candidate and former Chairman of Esan-North East Local Government Council, Hon. John Yakubu gave the commendation following the successful visit of the Esan Enigies to the Oba in Benin City.

He said that the Benin monarch's response to the visitors to consult with his chiefs and leaders of thought was the right thing to do in order to carry everyone along.

Hon. Yakubu who was the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy Governorship candidate in the 2016 Governorship election said that he is confident that the Benins being just, fair and accommodating people will find the request of the Esan people as presented by their Enigies and leaders of thought acceptable especially as the Benin and Esan peoples are brothers and sisters.

The former Chairman of Esan-North East Local Government Council, commended the Esan Enigies for finding the time to leave their domains to pursue this worthy cause very dear to their subjects.

He prayed God and our ancestors to protect them as they crisscross the state in their search for political relevance for their subjects.

Politics / “abure-led, Ogbaloi-led Excos Remains Suspended”, Says Ugbo by Easy4real10(m): 11:07pm On Jun 02, 2023
By Moses Oguntade

A former Local Government Council Chairmanship candidate and an aspirant in the 2024 gubernatorial election under the platform of Labour Party (LP), Comrade Curtis Eghosa Ugbo has reemphasized that the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Edo State Executive Committee (SEC) led by Barr. Julius Abure and Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi remain suspended.

That was stated in a press statement issued and signed by Comrade Curtis Eghosa Ugbo emanated from his campaign office in Benin City, Edo State capital.

Comrade Ugbo’s statement reads in part: “The purported suspension of Murphy Paul Imasuen, the rightful candidate of the Labour Party in the just concluded supplementary election of Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal House of Representatives election by the suspended National Executive Committee (NEC) and Edo State Executive Committee (SEC) led by Barr. Julius Abure and Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi have no moral justification to suspend Murphy Paul Imasuen who was duly elected at a well-attended party primary that earned him the Federal House of Representatives candidate based on the Constitution of the Party.

“Recall that Murphy Paul Imasuen, the authentic candidate of the party during Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal House of Representatives election defeated both the duo of Barr. Julius Abure and Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi-led national and state executive respectively at the Supreme Court to further authenticate him as the rightful candidate of the party.

“Also, the National NEC meeting held in Bauchi State last month already suspended all State Excos including Edo State. Our Acting National Chairman, Mr. Lamidi Apapa-led executive committee do not recognized Julius Abure and Kelly Igbaloi as members of the party, until they agreed to appear before the Disciplinary Committee of the party which the Federal High Court in Abuja had uphold.

“I therefore call on well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the purported suspension of Murphy Paul Imasuen and three others. It is a lost battle for Julius Abure and Kelly Ogbaloi led national and state excos.”

... threatening legal action over Billboard destruction

By Simeon OSAJIE

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Deputy governorship candidate in the Edo 2016 Gubernatorial Election, Hon. John Yakubu yesterday, Thursday 11, 2023 appealed to Governor Godwin Obaseki to urgently stop the malicious demolition of political billboards in parts of the state by suspected political opponents.

Yakubu made the call at his campaign office in Benin City, Edo State capital during a press conference to draw the attention of the state government and Edo people to the destruction and removal of his billboards across the state, saying the ugly situation if not checked could result in unavoidable political crisis in the state in the forthcoming governorship contest for 2024.

He said the action which he described as 'distasteful and reprehensible' is capable of heating the polity and further create the emergence of a dangerous and dictatorial tendency inimical to the practice of democracy.

According to the governorship aspirant, "I have cause to address you this morning in order to bring to the notice and attention of the good people of Edo State through you the emergence of a dangerous and dictatorial tendency inimical to the practice of democracy, which among others, guarantees free speech, freedom of movement, freedom of association.

"Some days ago, we observed with dismay that a number of our billboards which we paid for and caused to be placed along Airport Road, Ikpoba Slope and Ikpoba Hill had been removed illegally. On enquiry, the advertising company that handled the transaction on our behalf told us that the removal was ordered by a very top Edo State government official who was angry about the message contained in the billboards.

"We find this reprehensible, irresponsible, distasteful, high-handed and a dubious attempt to hold down our modest efforts to reach and sensitize the good people of Edo State on our message of hope, our message of 'Edo of Our Dream is Possible.'

"The message did not canvass for votes neither did it seek to promote the interest of any political party. The messages have not violated any electoral law. It merely says 'Edo of Our Dream is Possible', and that has put them on a panic mode because they know this is exactly what the good people of Edo State are yearning for.

"It has become clear from this action that the alleged top government official who is also rumoured to be nursing the 2024 gubernatorial ambition became alarmed and frightened at the speed at which we have succeeded in convincing the Edo State people in our little way that the dream of a better Edo is indeed possible."

Yakubu who noted that the race to the 2024 Edo Governorship election has not begun in earnest, solicited the state governor's intervention saying, "We will like to call on Governor Godwin Obaseki to rein in this his top official in order not to create a situation that will result in unavoidable political crisis in the state as we march towards 2024.

"We are also calling on all Edo State people of goodwill to speak out on this matter as it portends clear and present danger for our politics as we approach the 2024 off season Edo State governorship election," Yakubu said.

Ahead of the Edo 2024 Governorship Election and coupled with the campaign statement credited to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Prrsident-elect, which has gone viral, saying he will "gift Edo state to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and the APC when elected president", a statement which the state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Tony Aziegbemi described as "unpresidential and not good enough to be heard from a statesman, let alone a presidential hopeful, as it were."

Dr. Aziegbemi who stated this in a chat with newsmen in Benin City, Edo State capital said, "for as much as many would say campaign statements may not be binding, but for a supposedly reliable politician, campaign promises are bound to be kept.

"As such, we as a people are not seeing this as a mere campaign statement but a grand plan to gift us as political compensation to a friend for supporting your campaign to be president.

"Edo people are more and better enlightened to know what is good for them as against been treated as an article for compensation.

The PDP chairman further stated that "Edo State fared better in opposition under a PDP government in the last few years when compared to some other APC States. What we need as a people is good leadership that is people rooted and focused."

He then called on the President-Elect, APC chieftains and their party to "wake up to the reality of the fact that as Edo People, we are proud of our valued independent mindedness and would resist any attempt by anybody, no matter how highly placed, to turn us to mere article of trade or materials to be gifted to friends as compensation. They should be reminded that the blood of our fathers that built The Great Benin Moat in the 14th Century still flows in our veins."

Dr Tony Aziegbemi then called on all Edo people within and in Diaspora to "shine your eyes and defend your state against political invasion aimed at milking our collective resources and wealth to create a business empire for an individual."

There is no doubting the fact that our party, the PDP, has been so committed to a remodelled, rebranded and refocused Edo State, which must be sustained. We have never gifted you to any individual and we don't intent to do that. Rather, we have always worked with you, showing a direction towards a better state for our future generation.

"I make bold to tell you that as the party steering the ship of Edo State, we remain focused and committed to serving you better so that the dividend of democracy currently provided by our amiable governor and leader, Mr. Godwin Obaseki will not be derailed or truncated."

...draws parallel between electoral mishap in Edo, Adamawa

By Simeon OSAJIE

After a review of the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the supplementary governorship election in Adamawa State, I commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for taking decisive steps to ensure that the right thing was done in Adamawa State, where a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) usurped the powers of the Chief Returning Officer to unilaterally declare a winner when collation had not been concluded.

This been the position of the Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State Chapter, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi who in a statement issued in Benin City, copies of which was made available to newsmen said, "the bold and courageous stance by INEC is the right step in upholding the tenets of democracy and reinstating the Commission's commitment to promoting a fair and healthy democratic process, raising hope that the country is on a path of progress in its democratic journey.

"The disgraceful conduct of the erring official, Mr. Hudu Yunusa-Ari, draws parallel to a similar occurrence that marred the successful conduct of the PDP congresses and primary elections to produce candidates for the just-concluded National Assembly elections in Edo State, where Dr. Johnson Alaibo Sinkiem, then INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the State, usurped the powers of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), the body empowered by law to conduct congresses and primaries.

"Sinkiem, who is now the INEC REC in Rivers State is said to have 'in flagrant violation of the electoral laws, arrogated himself the powers of the returning officer and party's National Working Committee in respect of the primaries he conducted and accordingly forged the PDP primary election results.'

"The forged primary election results of the PDP primaries are what enabled the warring aspirants to file suits in the Abuja and Benin Divisions of the Federal High Court before the cases were finally put to rest by the Supreme Court which maintained that only the National Working Committee (NWC) of a political party has the power to conduct party primaries."

The Edo PDP State Chairman in his optimism said, "it is however gratifying to know that the then-dissident INEC REC in Edo State currently faces charges of alleged forgery and conspiracy in Edo State Police Command and we urge INEC to take a cue from this and follow up with the security agencies and other relevant authorities to ensure that the same decisive steps taken in Adamawa State is also taken so that the REC is duly prosecuted.

"His actions could have triggered a constitutional crisis, and it is imperative to ensure that such flagrant disregard for due process and established electoral laws do not reoccur."

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi however added, "ee, once more, express our deepest appreciation to INEC for standing with the people and defending the sanctity of our democracy.

"The Commission’s actions in Adamawa State are beacons of hope for our nation's electoral process, and we hope that the electoral body will continue to display such courage, integrity and impartiality in the discharge of its mandate."
Politics / Edo PDP Felicitates With Muslims On Eid-el-fitr by Easy4real10(m): 5:29pm On Apr 21, 2023
By Simeon OSAJIE

The leadership of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has called on Muslims faithful in the State and Nigeria to keep hope alive for a better Nigeria.

The Chairman, PDP, Edo State chapter, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi who stated this in a press statement issued in Benin City said that this period calls for prayers among Nigerians in overcoming the hydra-headed challenges confronting the nation.

He called on Muslim faithful to exhibit a high degree of tolerance, perseverance; sacrifice and love which he noted are some of the lessons of the Ramadan period.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi also used the opportunity to call on the privileged people in our society to reach out to the poor who could not afford one square meal a day.

"I want to use the Ramadan celebration to felicitate with Muslims in Edo State and Nigeria at large, to congratulate them on the successful completion of the month long Ramadan fast.

“This period also calls for deep reflection among well-meaning Nigerians to pray for unity of the Country especially in the face of the daunting economic and security challenge facing the Country”.

He further urged Muslims adherents to show love and compassion among others as demonstrated by Holy Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W) and work towards the peace and progress of Edo State and Nigeria as they celebrate.

Nairaland / General / People Of Ikhuen Oboh Appeals To IGP To Look Into Alleged Attempt By Officers To by Easy4real10(m): 3:05pm On Apr 19, 2023
By Simeon OSAJIE

The Ohen, Elders and people of Ikhuen Oboh Village in Uhunwonde Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to the Inspector General Of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba to come to their aid and look into the alleged attempt by Force CID Abuja to frustrate investigation of a notorious suspect called Clement Guobadia and others who allegedly killed one Frank Eferi with AK-47 gun in presence of a police officer in Benin City, Edo State capital.

The appealed was contained in a petition signed by Emmanuel Okonkwo Esq., Solicitor to the Chief Priest (Ohen) Efosa Aighobahi and Mr. Peter Eze Omorowa representatives of Ikhuen Oboh village and made available to the press.

They also expressed concern on the alleged nature of the investigation purported carried out by the Legal Department of the Force CID Abuja.

The petition pointed out that the useful credible evidence that were established linking the suspects (Clement Guobadia and others) to the alleged killing of one Frank Eferi, the alleged findings of the said Homicide Department appears to be in consonance with all other reports and findings of other departments of the Nigerian Police Force who previously investigated the matter before it was transferred to Force CID Abuja.

The Solicited noted that, in the petition the matter was verify believe that the matter was further remitted to the legal session of Force CID Abuja but it is however being alleged that cronies and allies of the principal who often allegedly engaging themselves in violent crimes are now boasting and aversely celebrating that they have now successfully compromised the investigation of the matter before the legal session of Force CID Abuja.

Emmanuel Okonkwo Esq added that they boasted that they were assured that the legal advice from the Legal Session of Force CID Abuja will no longer link the principal suspect to the alleged killing of Frank Eferi, that the material evidence that could establish same will be expunged and that the legal advice will only recommend and link the principal suspect to the offense of Unlawful Possession of fire arms.
When the information was confirmed by one of the activist in the state, Emmanuel Aigbogun, this led to wide jubilation in Iguomo that they have seen the legal advice and that the murder charge have been dropped so that they will be able to grant the suspect bail, the people of Ikhuen Oboh then express a no confidence on the lagal department, hence the appeal to the Inspector General Of Police to help look into the case and call for the file to know the true situation of case

The Solicitor pointed out it is in view of this and others that the Ohen, elders and people of the village are seeking for justice and pleads with Inspector General Of Police to revisit the case and direct that the previous findings of the various session of the Nigerian Police Force both at the Force CID Abuja be rigorously reviewed the alleged recommendations of the legal session of Force CID Abuja which allegedly purports to the principal suspect who allegedly killed one Frank Eferi in the presence of a senior Police officer and others in broad daylight.

He noted that the evidence against the principal suspect is obviously overwhelming, the cronies of the principal suspect all time material has been working assiduously to compromise the allegations of the matter at stake.

They then appealed to the Inspector General Of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba to use his good offices to look into the matter and do the needful as the soul of the deceased and everyone is in dire need of justice.

...Says, now that elections are over, it's time for governance

With the Saturday's, April 15, 2023 Supplementary Elections concluded, thus signalling the end of electoral process in Nigeria, the People's Democratic party (PDP) Edo State Chapter has sent congratulatory messages to winners of the various elective positions in the state, with a call on all to work within their respective positions to make Edo State great again.

Edo State PDP Chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, in a message personally issued in Benin City, Efo State capital copies of which were made available to newsmen said, "let us thank God for our State and our people that the just concluded election process was peaceful. Some States had unholy tales to tell but here, it was a story of one big family of Edo people. Our Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki was instrumental in this feat.

"I am by this note congratulating all those who have been elected to various positions under the platform of our great party, PDP, you all deserve your hard-earned victories. You are enjoined to reach out to your fellow contestants.

"I also want to appreciate all our party members and other supporters who may not be card-carrying members of our party for their support and good conduct throughout the process of the election.

"Now that election is over, it is time for more serious work aimed at making our State, Edo great again."

Going further, Dr. Aziegbemi added, "I can assure you that our governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki will continue to provide the much-needed leadership.

"I am also calling on all the citizens of Edo State to team up with the government in its drive to create better opportunities for us today and our generations to come. The government needs our support to achieve more. As a people, we should give all our support to Mr. Godwin Obaseki led government of Edo State.

To members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Chairman Tony Aziegbemi said, "It is time for all of us to close ranks and queue behind the leadership of our amiable governor, so that we can, among other things, work to bring the much-needed dividends of democracy to our people and also grow our party for the future.

Nairaland / General / Single Haulage Bill Passage: Why Governor Obaseki Must Not Sign It Into Law. by Easy4real10(m): 5:36pm On Apr 16, 2023

Towards the end of March 2023, the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) passed the Executive Bill for a law to establish a Single Haulage Fee on Agricultural Farm Produce.

The presentation of the bill was done by the Majority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Henry Okhuarobo represents the Ikpoba Okha constituency.

Okhuarobo during his presentation of the executive bill, argued that the Bill critically supports the uniformity in the charges on farm produce.

Eight out of the Nine lawmakers in attendance unanimously pledged their backing for the Bill to be passed into law despite the objection by Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency Two, in the 7th State Assembly, who drew the attention of the House to carefully observe a section of the Bill that he perceived was designed to strangulate the people through prices of commodity hikes in Edo State.

The eight lawmakers as a majority defended their stance when they claimed that the bill will provide a legal framework for the smooth administration of taxes, shore up revenue for the State as well as provide job employment for the unemployed.

They further added that it will create a single fee for goods and agricultural produce, noting that it would also plug some of the identified leakages in the collection of fees.

Emmanuel Agbaje said outside the drawback spotted in tax imposition of the bill on the commonly consumed farm produce, he expects the Executive Bill to only capture Taxes on degraded goods, such as cocoa and other related products.

Agbaje’s call to delete the tax bill that he anticipated will impose taxes on poor farmers amidst economic hardship when passed on Commonly consumed goods, or Non-Degrade, such as tomatoes, vegetables, and okra in the section of the bill, did not receive support amongst colleagues as his lone voice was left in the wilderness and his arguments thrown to the dustbin.

Outside Agbaje's variations and his deeds to point out loopholes in the bill, there are infractions of an aspect of the bill that may stop the further consideration of signing it into law.

For the record, the lawmaker should have consulted deeper into the Tax and levy laws and whether it granted any permission for such collection before considering passing the bill.

On the whole, the state governor is in the last stage to assent to the bill before promulgating it as a law.

Before assenting to the bill, the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki should know there is a need to seek a section of the law under the collection of taxes and levy rates as enshrined in the Constitution.

The Former Minister of Agriculture Audu Ogbeh had 2017 raised concerns about the illegal checkpoints and revenue collectors along transportation routes for food items, saying it had an impact on the current increase in the prices of food.

The Federal Government has constituted an Inter-Agency Committee to enforce a ban on the collection of levies and taxes on agricultural produce on highways.

A statement issued by Tony Ohaeri, the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Abuja on Monday, said the committee was inaugurated by the Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh.

The committee was constituted following recommendations of the Presidential Taskforce on increasing food prices set up in February by the outgoing Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

He urged the committee to facilitate the government’s directives on the multiple levies and unauthorized checkpoints during the transportation of agricultural produce from one state to another.

In 1981, Decree No 21 of the Military Government of Nigeria, Section 2 stated that "no person including a Tax authority shall Mount Roadblock in any part of the Country for Tax or Levy collecting."

The Decree of Section 2, however, recommended a 3-year or fine of N50,000.00 or both for any authority, who contravenes.

Similarly, in a judgment dated Tuesday, October 24, 2014, with Suit No.HIGU/2/2014, between an oil palm Company, Claimant, and Ovia South-West Local Government Council, Defendant, before Justice J. A. Osadiaye at the High Court sitting in Iguobazuwa, the Court held that the Defendant has no power under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, or any law to Mount Roadblocks within its Local Government Area to collect any tax, levies and/or rate for any reason whatsoever from the Claimant and/or its suppliers.

The originating summons dated and filed by the Claimant against the Defendant, on March 25, 2024, asks the Court to resolve whether or not the Defendant has the power under the Constitution to collect the tax or any levy.

This is a testimony that is pointing to our argument.

The bill harmonizing a single haulage fee should have captured degraded farm produce not allowing it to extend to none degraded goods.

Agribusiness is tax-free. The payments of minimum tax by companies that make small or no profits at all do not apply to agro-allied businesses.

Agro-allied plant and equipment enjoy enhanced capital allowances of up to 50%.

Although no business entity is given a blanket exemption from paying taxes, companies operating within the agricultural sector are exempted from paying specific taxes that apply to companies in other sectors.

The Companies Income Tax Act 27 and other fiscal legislations 28 offer a variety of tax incentives to attract potential investors and entrepreneurs.

Though part of the challenges militating against farm business includes weather hazards like inadequate rain, flood invasion, pest invasion, disease outbreak among livestock, and glut, it is pertinent to note that the current cost of diesel and electricity tariff in running farm machinery is not helpful, as this is an already a huge burden to farmers on its own.

Enumerated facts are, the major reason an agricultural business could not accommodate multiple taxes, is that agricultural businesses cannot survive with multiple taxes which has been introduced by some state governments.

Tax is supposed to come from farmers’ profit but now the reverse is the case as the government tries to forcefully generate tax from farmers' funds and borrowed funds.

In the past, farmers pay company income tax to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

In addition, states collect personal income tax from the company’s directors and staff, also education levy is being collected.

The transport ministry has many operators dealing decisively with farmers transporting their goods, including Vehicle Inspection Officers, (VIO), Police, traffic police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Local Council contractors/agents, and consultants generating all kinds of levies from farmers.

The worse part of it is the outrageous bill imposed by these tax collectors, like tax consultants, contractors, and agents. They raised bills in millions and then call for negotiation.

The government needs to realize that farmers are employers of labour, sending them out of business means sending more people to the unemployment market, which may result in insecurity in the nation as a hungry man is an angry man.

Some Stakeholders who spoke to journalists warned that agric business may soon go into extinction if issues of multiple taxations, activities of herdsmen, and militants against farmers are not addressed.

A local farmer, Engr. Osawe Hilton who seriously frowned at the recent Executive Bill said food scarcity is imminent in the State, considering the rising onslaught of herdsmen, militants disrupting activities of farmers, and now the new attempt to suffocate farmers by the Edo State House of Assembly and the State Government.

Engr. Osawe added, “Multiple taxes introduced by some states against farmers are not helping the issue. Everyone believes the fact that the agricultural business is hazardous. Hence, many international communities apply for tax relief or exceptions for their farmers to guarantee food security.

Another farmer, Enogieru Osayuware, said if the tax imposition is allowed, then it will have multiplier effects on the purchase of commodities in the open markets

They called on government at all levels to rise to defend farmers and get them protected against multiple taxations and all other challenges.

According to Osayuware, “We suggest farmers should be considered for tax relief or in the alternative, allow the company income tax and personal tax income to remain, rather than looking for avenues to undermine farmers through various levies.”

In a local adage, it is often said that, when a single “shoe-bomber” fails to blow up an aircraft, we now have to remove footwear to prevent that.

But preventing it from allowing the destruction of the process would require changes to the laws regarding the availability of the above that has become a red line.

Especially when lobbying against the will of the people which is heavily involved in sponsoring politicians and buying influence.

An honest response might be shrugging and saying “Oh well, that was inevitable, but I for one am not going to lift a finger to allow anti-people law to thrive.

Civil Society organizations and all available actors should find a way to engage the government to get simple clarity on the proposed harmonized haulage bill.
