By Easy Ekoyatah Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has reacted to publications trending in some online news platform, that one Comrade Ken Omusi the suspended former State Youth Leader is now the acting chairman of the party in the state. In a press statement issued by Comrade Sam Uroupa, State Publicity Secretary (SPS) of the party and made available to newsmen alleged that, the self-acclaimed acting chairman, Comrade Ken Omusi brought thugs numbering over fifty including members of the Edo State Security Network to invade the party secretariat in the early hours of Thursday, 9th May, 2024 at Ogbelaka Street, Benin City, Edo State capital alleging that the state exco of the party has been dissolved. According to Comrade Uroupa, the former state youth leader of the party was suspended alongside others for anti-party activities, gross insubordination and revealing classical official information about the party to non-members of the party, among others. “To put the records in proper perspective, Comrade Ken Omusi was the former state youth leader of the party who was suspended alongside Alao Emmanuel, Engr. Jolly Isokpehi, Hon. Simeon Akharame, Mr. Iredia Sunday, Victor Omokpor and Arch. Lucky Imhanmwuokor for anti-party activities, gross insubordination and revealing classical official information about the party to non-members of the party, among others. “We wish to state categorically that the State Executive Council (SEC) as led by distinguished Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi is still the substantive Exco of the party in the State, it has not been dissolved. “The party equally contacted the National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure of the development who also confirmed that he is not aware of any dissolution neither did he direct any one to act on his behalf. “As a party we are convinced beyond all reasonable doubt that Comrade Ken Omusi is been sponsored by the PDP led government in the state to destabilize LP otherwise, how would one reconcile the involvement of men of the Edo State security network under the office of the deputy governor in over seven Siena buses in company of the suspended youth leader to come and violently take over the LP Secretariat? “We are therefore calling on the general public, people of good conscience, all lovers of democracy across the world and Edolites in particular to appeal to the PDP led government in the State to let Labour Party (LP) breath. “As a party we are appealing to all voters in the state to come out emasse and vote for LP and its candidate Barr. Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata as we are determined and resolute in our quest to give Edo people quality development and the dividend democracy if voted in power come September 21st 2024.”

By Easy Ekoyatah Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has reacted to publications trending in some online news platform, by a group which calls itself ‘Shine Your Eyes Group’ (SYEG) and claims to be part of Edo State chapter of the party In a press statement issued on behalf of the party by Comrade Sam Uroupa, State Publicity Secretary and made available to newsmen in Benin City stated that there is no pressure group known as 'Shine Your Eyes Group' within the Edo State LP or in the party’s constitution adding that the signatory to the news item being peddled by the group are not members of Labour Party. The LP statement also condemned the commendation the said group gave to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State for adhering to the principle of fairness and equity in the choice of its governorship candidate and running mate. “The public should be aware that the pseudonyms (Comrade Jonah Ifada and Osagie Omoregie as chairman and secretary, respectively) are not members of the Edo LP, and as such, they are not in our records in the state. “Their LGAs and wards where they claim to be working as party members are not known to us. It is clear that they are sponsored by the opposition party, the APC, on whose behalf they are speaking. It is unfortunate that the self-proclaimed SYEG did not acknowledge the hardships brought upon Nigerians by the Tinubu-led APC government, which calls for Nigerians to "shine their eyes" rather than calling for scrutiny on a free and fair LP primary that was devoid of any rancor and crisis, resulting in the selection of the distinguished legal luminary Barr. Olumide Osaigbove Akpata as its flag bearer.” Going further, the LP image maker added: “Perhaps we need to remind the said SYEG that the Tinubu-led APC they commended for adhering to the principles of fairness and equity in the selection of its governorship candidate and running mate could not conduct a free, fair, and credible primary in the state. The APC primary was marred by irregularities, claims and counterclaims of factional flag bearers/candidates, leading to the cancellation and re-conducting of their primaries in the state. This is unlike the Edo State LP primary, which was conducted once and for all with the participation of eight aspirants, where aspirants from Edo Central were in the majority. Therefore, ignorantly comparing the LP with the APC is uncalled for, as they are separate political parties with distinct internal structures and decision-making processes. “It is laughable for SYEG to call for a validly nominated candidate in a free and fair primary, who scored 316 out of 340 votes, to step down for a candidate who scored 7 votes. The governorship primary election of the Labour Party was conducted transparently, with the presence of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials, security agencies, and other independent electoral observers, with live coverage on Channels TV. The involvement of INEC officials, observers, and the public airing of the process demonstrate the credibility and fairness of the election. The alleged claim by SYEG that the primary was skewed is false and baseless. “The transparency of the primary election, the absence of zoning considerations within the LP, and the party's commitment to merit-based selections indicate that zoning is not a constitutional requirement within the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State. The LP has not previously held the governorship position in the state, indicating that the party does not owe any specific ethnicity or senatorial district the governorship position based on zoning principles. Therefore, the argument of zoning should not apply within the LP context. “The accusation made by the anonymous group against the Edo State LP, stating that they have ‘murdered sleep,’ is particularly ironic given that the APC-led government has caused significant hardship for Nigerians, depriving them of rest due to their mismanagement of the country. “Therefore, we call upon the esteemed members of the public, especially the resilient citizens of Edo State, to dismiss the unfounded allegations of this anonymous group. We implore you to stand united and show your unwavering support by turning out in large numbers to cast your votes for the LABOUR PARTY and its distinguished candidate, Barrister OLUMIDE OSAIGBOVO AKPATA in the upcoming gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21st, 2024. Let us join hands in solidarity to usher in a new era of progress, integrity, and prosperity for Edo State. Together, we can make a difference and shape a brighter future for our beloved state.” |

By Easy Ekoyatah The Edo State chapter of Labour Party (LP) has congratulated Edo workers in particular and Nigeria in general on the occasion of the 2024 Workers’ Day Celebration. According to the message signed by Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, the immediate past president of National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), former Auditor and Assistant Secretary, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Edo State Council and Chairman of Edo State chapter of Labour Party, noted that the issues that led to the inaugural celebration of May Day in 1887 are still prevalent in Nigeria today. “It must be stated abinitio that the events leading to the celebration of the May Day in 1887 are dominant today in Nigeria.” Edo LP Chairman Ogbaloi pointed out that the contributory importance of the workforce to the economic growth, sustainability and advancement of any nation cannot be overemphasized, noting that no nation survives without its workforce and deplored the insecurity in Edo that has reduced agricultural production and stifled economic activities in the state. According to him, “The insecurity generally across the length and breadth of Edo State is taking its toll on the workers and the citizens. People cannot sleep with their two eyes closed for fear of being kidnapped, killed or extorted. Life in Edo State has become short and unbearable. “The high rate of inflation have put a deep hole in the pockets of workers and has rendered the minimum wage nugatory. The paradox of the Nigerian workers is that they create the wealth and are left out in the sharing of the wealth created by them. Thus the average Edo worker is poor, pauperized and dehumanized. Most workers cannot boast of a befitting building at the end of their meritorious services to Edo State. “As we approach 21st September, 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo State, I strongly believe if Olumide Akpata, Labour Party governorship candidate, is voted as the next governor of Edo State, most workers will boast of a befitting building at the end of their meritorious service to Edo State.” Going further, the president Emeritus of National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees, “Acknowledged the resilience of workers in the state despite the unstable foreign exchange rates and exponential inflation of the prices of goods and commodities; workers have shown their commitment to maintain an adaptive working attitude.” He therefore seized the opportunity of this year’s Workers’ Day celebration to call on the Edo workers to be vigilant and avail themselves the opportunity to vote for credible leadership whenever they have the opportunity to do so at their various unions. He urged them to bring leaders on board who will be selfless, dedicated and passionate about their welfare.

…Insists Alhaji Asamah Yusuf Kadiri is the authentic Dep. Gov’Ship Candidate By Easy Ekoyatah The Edo State chapter of Labour Party (LP) has faulted the final list as published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in which the deputy governorship candidate is listed as Oluyinka Faith Alufohai rather than LP validly nominated running mate, Alhaji Asamah Yusuf Kadiri, (SAN). Recalled on the 19th of April, 2024, The9JaTREND reported that Labour Party governorship candidate in the September 21st gubernatorial election, Olumide Akpata has dropped Oluyinka Faith Alufohai and picked Alhaji Asamah Yusuf Kadiri, SAN as the deputy governorship candidate of the party. In a press statement signed by Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, State chairman of the party and made available to newsmen in Benin City, assured party members and supporters that “this is simply a technical error”. According to Comrade Ogbaloi, “Our team followed all necessary procedures and submitted Alhaji Kadiri's name and credentials as the deputy governorship candidate, well within INEC's stipulated window. Unfortunately, a technical glitch occurred at the end of the National Headquarters of our party during the submission process, resulting in the incorrect name appearing on the final list. “We are currently actively engaged with INEC officials to rectify this issue immediately and our team has provided all requisite documentation demonstrating Alhaji Kadiri's valid nomination. We have been following-up with INEC diligently, to ensure it updates its candidate list with the accurate information. “We recognise the anxiety this error may cause, but urge our supporters to remain calm and steadfast in their commitment to our party's vision. Your unwavering support and activism have been invaluable thus far, and we need you to continue spreading awareness of our platform and championing the positive change we represent. “The Labour Party is determined to contest the forthcoming September 21, 2024, Edo State Governorship elections fairly and transparently. We should not allow this minor administrative hurdle to dampen our confidence or impede our momentum. Together, we shall overcome any obstacle, minor or major, as we continue our march towards restoring Edo State to its pride of place nationally.”

…Calls for dialogue, togetherness towards Edo Gov’ship election By Easy Ekoyatah In the spirit of celebration, a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikpoba-Okha local government area of Edo State, Hon. James Umaigba has urged party members, supporters and stakeholders to embrace dialogue, togetherness in preparation for September 21st gubernatorial elections. The appeal was made by former Ward 5 Councillor and former Majority Leader in the legislative arm of Ikpoba Okha local government council, Hon. James Umaigba as he marks his birthday, today 21st April, 2024. Filled with happiness, Hon. Umaigba, a businessman in the real estate industry said, "As I celebrate another blessed year of life today, I am immensely thankful to Almighty God for His continuous grace and blessings. "On this special day, I extend my heartfelt gratitude towards our dedicated party leadership, whose unwavering commitment and meticulous planning are instrumental in steering the APC towards a triumphant outcome in the upcoming gubernatorial elections." Going further, he noted: "It is crucial at this juncture to acknowledge and address the internal disputes within our APC Ikpoba Okha chapter. Such conflicts, particularly at a time when we should be united, threaten to undermine our collective efforts and weaken our stance against a well-prepared opposition. "The presence of leadership tussles within our ranks is particularly alarming as it distracts from our primary objective." While strongly urging every member involved in these disputes to prioritize the greater good of our party and focus on the upcoming elections scheduled for September 21, Hon. Umaigba emphasized that the results of September 21st governorship elections will undoubtedly clarify any uncertainties regarding leadership, rendering any current conflicts both unnecessary and unproductive. He noted: "Our primary focus should now shift to engaging and rallying our voters across all wards, ensuring that every member is aligned with our strategy to secure victory. The role of Ikpoba Okha is critical in the context of Edo State; it acts as a significant indicator of our potential success and should not be underestimated. "On this day of reflection and celebration, let us reinforce our commitment to unity and collective success. Let us remember that our strength lies in our solidarity. By aligning our efforts and focusing on our shared objectives, we are not just aiming for a victory in the elections, but also working towards the greater prosperity and stability of Edo State. Let's move forward together, steadfast and united, for the betterment of our community and party."

…Says I never granted interview to any journalist as far as the situation is concerned …Akpata is my candidate, his business is my business; is the business of LP – Ogbaloi By Easy Ekoyatah Chairman of the Edo State chapter of Labour Party (LP), Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi has debunked a statement credited to him by some online newspapers that the LP governorship candidate in the September 21, 2024 gubernatorial election, Barr. Olumide Akpata’s invitation to the Uniben Staff Club was a private affair, which had nothing to do with the party. Comrade Ogbaloi disclosed this in an interview with The9JaTREND today, 20th April, 2024 at the party’s secretariat in Benin City, Edo State capital. Ogbaloi, showing bitterness and disappointment over the alleged comment, said I didn’t take any interview with any journalist at all. “Well, let me say clearly that I didn't take any interview with any journalist at all. It's the fact that when the incident happened, few persons spoke to me who were not described as journalists; and at no time did I position myself in an interview in that respect and so I did mention to them ‘yes, I'm invited by the police.’ “But it shows some resentment when I said that the police have over escalated the issue by inviting me in my person. I mentioned that to the individual who spoke with me and that my candidate, Barr. Olumide Akpata was in uniben to honour invitation but however, I was not there with him at that particular time, and that is not to say that we are saying that or I was saying that the issue was out rightly a personal matter of our candidate. While emphasizing that today, Barr. Olumide Akpata is the candidate of Edo LP Party, Comrade Ogbaloi noted: “Whatever concerns Akpata concerns Labour Party (LP). We take his duties and he takes our duty, we are intertwined. And so if he had gone to uniben, it is not completely disconnected from his personality and the personality of Labour Party. And for me to be quoted as saying that it was a personal issue, which have nothing to do with Labour Party is not my statements and I want to make that very clear. “And to that extent, I have not granted an interview on this matter for me to be quoted as it is in that piece of news which is regrettable and I hereby debunk that, and that I wouldn't further have said in such situation when of course people will go out and put things down when no interview was appropriately conducted. “Well, in conclusion, yes, I am amenable to go to the police station and I have made it clear to the police that I will be coming. In fact when the letters came I was not in Benin City. So there was no way I could instantly have responded to the police and besides that, I also needed to put my candidate Barr. Olumide Akpata on notice that I have gotten this letter, so that both of us will look at it together and visit the police. “Of course it is concluded that we shall be with the police, say about 2.00p.m on Monday when of course is around time. So that piece of news is regretted and I hope that journalists must make themselves extremely professional in taking interview from people. That particular piece of news is not coming from me since I did not take interview on it, okay. “To my teeming supporters and those who must have read that piece of news, I’m here to reconstruct that position to say that, that was not my statement; that news was never coming from me. Akpata is my candidate, his business today is my business, and it is as well the business of the party. I will drive to all logical conclusions what will enthrone him as the next governor of Edo State. I want to make that clear, and I’m further to say that those who insinuate that there is a disconnect between the candidate and the party are day dreaming, and I make bold to say that such thoughts only exist in figment of their imagination. We are one indivisible entity and we’re moving together to the task of Labour Party taking over to produce the next government of Edo State.”

By Easy Ekoyatah The Edo chapter of the People's Democratic Party PDP has denied involvement in the alleged attack on the Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata at the Staff Club of the University of Benin recently as being circulated in an unsigned statement in the social media. In a statement signed by the State Assistant Publicity Secretary of the Party, Dr. Patrick Ojebuobor and made available to the newsmen, the PDP notes that the party is a law abiding entity and obeys all the laws of the land. The statement pointed out that the Labour Party is not a threat to the PDP in the September Edo State governorship election as all the remaining members of the party has joined the PDP fold. "The PDP would have ignored the statement outright as it was neither signed by the Labour Party nor their governorship candidate, but decided to issue this clarification for the benefit of the unsuspecting members of the public. "The PDP has no hand in the alleged purported attack on the Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata (Esq) at the University of Benin as contained in the said unsigned statement. "The PDP is a law abiding political party and have respect for and observe the rule of law in its entirety as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and other extant laws, rules and regulations in our statute books. "The PDP which doesn't believe in violence and thuggery does not have to resort to the use of unconventional means to tackle the Labour Party candidate or any of its opponents in the September Edo State governorship election as Labour Party is not in contention in the election. "For the avoidance of doubt, the Labour Party which has been on life support since the 2023 Edo State House of Assembly election has finally given up the ghost since His Excellency, Mr. Marvelous Godwins Omobayo, the Deputy Governor joined the PDP; carrying along with him the remaining vestige of the party and all the support groups". While describing the authors of the unsigned statement as idle minds masquerading supporters of the Labour Party governorship candidate to curry favour in the form of financial benefits, the statement urged them to explore employment opportunities in the Governor Godwin Obaseki led PDP administration and be engaged gainfully to secure their future. "We state further that, that our candidate had an incident free outing at the University of Benin Staff Club recently does not mean that the PDP should be accused of complicity when any other group or individual is allegedly attacked at that same venue thereafter as the impostors circulation the fake statement wants the public to believe. "The PDP urge these idle minds masquerading as supporters of governorship candidates of these mushroom parties to curry favour and daily bread to explore any of the numerous job opportunities provided by the Governor Godwin Obaseki led PDP administration in the state to be gainfully employed and stay away from the act of hero worshipping that will ruin their future. "We urge the general public to disregard this unsubstantiated and jaundiced statement from these idle minds and throw it into the trash can which it rightly belongs".

According to him, digital campaign education is essential for political parties for several reasons, including reaching a wider audience, cost-effective communication, real-time feedback, targeted messaging, data analytics, Engagement and mobilization, transparency and accountability and adaptability to changing trends. In summary, Dr. Ojo said digital campaign education empowers political parties campaign volunteers to effectively: Harness data insights, Communicate their messages, Engage with voters and other stakeholders, Adapt to the evolving landscape of digital media and technology, Enhances their outreach capabilities, Improves campaign efficiency, and strengthens their overall electoral strategy at their convenience without stress. The high point of the seminar was when the DCE-Project initiator and the founder of MHCD Academy Ltd Comrade Osamuyime Xtrel Ugiagbe took the centre stage to educate political parties about his organisation readiness on the forthcoming training and how to participate in the one week free digital facilitating certificate course. Speaking to newsmen after the event on the essence of the seminar, Comrade Ugiagbe Osamuyime, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MHCD Academy said they decided to embark on the project because of the deteriorating nature of our voters’ participation. He noted: “Imagine the last election we were having 25%, and if people did not come to vote, the issue of democracy would be increasing every day. “So on our quest to see how we can help increase voters participation. That was what preempt the development of the training courses for this project which is not going to be a one off exercise, because we discovered that most of the youth who are actually the segments of people who are supposed to be engaging in voting during election, majority of them are out of it and these are the people who we are targeting with this training, especially those within the age of 18 to at least 35 and at most 45 years old because of those other youths who were able to forge into the digital spaces today. "We have so many youth who are in digital spaces ignoring democratic processes during elections. These are the people we need to target, attract and encourage digitally to participate in the electoral process of participation. “We are doing this to support all candidates, who will find our services worthy in respective of his or her political party. "Digital Campaign Education is not targeted at any political party, absolutely no. It is for every candidate who feels that this training will help build the capacity of their campaign volunteers. "We are calling on various political parties to register for this project to enable them to nominate their 5-10 volunteers from each ward for participation. "And the interesting thing is that the registration and training is free with the option of paying for their certificate processing fee for those who want us to engage them on business. “Having opportunity to train more people to be digitally inclined for this forthcoming gubernatorial election is a key to us. That is the essence of this digital campaign education.”

By Easy Ekoyatah Edo State Chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi today (Wednesday 14th February) said the party has commenced the screening process for delegates election/congresses ahead of the party's primary scheduled for February 23, 2024. Speaking with newsmen in Benin City during a delegates screening exercise held at the party Secretariat, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, Chairman of the 10 man screening committee said the screening is to ensure a fair process for the emergence of delegates for the party’s governorship primary. Ogbaloi said the screening exercise is a traditionally required item in dealing with the internal politics of the party adding that, "We want those who will eventually become the delegates of our party, who will contest it to be screened and be sure that they are competent in character and otherwise for them to be in the congress and eventually in the election of delegates that will come to the primary." On his part, Edo State Labour Party Publicity Secretary and Spokesman, Comrade Sam Uroupa said that the screening exercise is to ensure that there is no hijacking of the process by political godfathers adding that there would be no statutory or super delegates. Uroupa noted that the process will throw up eligible and qualified delegates both at the ward and local government council’s levels for the primary. "The screening is both for the ward and local government delegates for the primary of our party. It is primarily to ensure that those screened are eligible to qualify for our party delegate. "The criteria here is that, a person must be a card carrying member with full financial commitment to the party. That means, he or she must be paying his or her party dues and also working for the interest of the party. We required items like LP Identify Card, Voters Card among others to be a bonafide member of the party. "Noteworthy, these are the people that are going to elect the ward delegates, the ward delegates who in turn are going to elect the LGA delegates, the LGA 7 delegates, who will come and elect the flagbearer of our party. "This is a process leading to the primary to ensure it is hitch free. This tells you that the process is grassroots, because people from the grassroots are driving the process. They would determine our party's governorship candidate. And the people are to elect who is to be their own delegates and who would stand on behalf of them to go for the primary. "With this screening, there is no hijacking of the process, there is no godfatherism, no super delegates, and no statutory delegates. The process is completely driven by the people from the ward, by the ordinary card carrying members of our party. "We are promising that the entire primary is going to be free, fair and credible. The credibility is the foundation we are starting with the screening process now." Uroupa said.

By Easy Ekoyatah A pro democracy group, 'Guardians of Democracy and Development Initiative' have petitioned the Member representing Ovia Federal House of Representatives in the National Assembly, Hon. Dennis Idahosa to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) on allegation of Advance Fee fraud. According to the petition which has been circulated widely, the group relied on a 2015 administrative report by the administration of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, when he was the governor of Edo State. The petition which is titled: PETITION AGAINST HON. DENNIS IDAHOSA OVER ALLEGATIONS OF INVOLVEMENT IN INTERNATIONAL FRAUD LEVELED AGAINST HIM BY EDO STATE GOVERNMENT WHILE IN OFFICE AS A COMMISSIONER, CONTRARY TO THE PROVISIONS OF THE ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIMES COMMISSION, EFCC, reads: "We write on behalf of 'Guardians of Democracy and Development Initiative' with reference to the subject matter above. It has been brought to our attentions as a group committed to democratic best practices and sanity in the public space, that Hon. Dennis Idahosa was reported in 2015 by the administration of Senator Adams Oshiomhole, while he was governor of Edo State, to be involved in international fraud which led to unceremonious exit from the State Executive Council as Commissioner for Investments and Public/Private Partnership. "The State government traced his exit to allegation that Mr. Idahosa was engaged in fraudulent activities (popularly called 419). "According to the State Government report, the state Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole had received series of petitions, mostly from overseas, alleging that Mr. Idahosa was engaged in fraudulent activities on an industrial scale. “The petitioners purportedly to be his victims, alleged they had been swindled of huge sums of money. Disturbed and consistent with his zero tolerance for corruption or any conduct that might tarnish the image of Edo State or bring the country to international odium for that matter, Comrade Oshiomhole had late last year (2015) set up a high-level administrative panel to look into the grave allegations discreetly. "After weeks of forensic investigations, the panel’s findings were startling. Last week, Mr. Idahosa became aware that the administrative panel was on the verge of formally requesting him to answer those weighty charges. "As a matter of fact, last Thursday (January 29, 2015), Mr. Idahosa had attended APC Mega Presidential rally at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium that was well attended in his capacity as Commissioner. Curiously, he dramatically reappeared barely 24 hours later at the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announcing his defection. "We do not want to join the speculation that Mr. Idahosa’s defection was designed to preempt the report of the administrative panel or his action motivated by an external offer of protection. “However, in the name of decency and justice and international image of our country, we can only encourage Mr. Idahosa to come out in the open and answer the sundry allegations of 419 leveled against him. “Otherwise, the long arms of the law, though may be delayed by his new powerful friends, will ultimately prevail,” the report stated." Furthermore, group disclosed that, Edo State government added that, "shortly after the above report was made public, Idahosa made a sudden u-turn and returned to the fold of All Progressives Congress" The anti corruption group lamented that, Idahosa was later elected a member of Federal House of Representatives. "Presently, he is contesting for the governorship of Edo State, despite the sordid story concerning the serious weight of Edo State 2015 administrative report which indicted him. "In the light of these developments, your office is duty bound to invite him to clarify that he is, or is not a person of corrupt antecedent. "Mr. Chairman would agree that these allegations are very weighty, especially coming from a State Government. It is therefore a matter of patriotic duty that it is thoroughly investigated. And since the State Government led by Adams Oshiomhole (now Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) claimed that it received several petitions and also have a Panel Report thereto, the Commission may in addition to other of its investigative strategies call for those documents and invite His Excellency Senator Adams Oshiomhole. This is particularly in line with the powers and duties of the EFCC. "We are disturbed by the open knowledge of Mr. Idahosa’s activities in Canada where he had sojourned for several years, before his unceremonious return to Nigeria. "More disturbing is the fact that, Idahosa has gone ahead to occupy public offices and has been cleared by the APC now to contest for the highest office in Edo State under the Political Platform whose government allegedly indicted him for fraud. "Then, there is an odious dimension to it, which your commission should unravel. For instance, Nigerians may wish to know whether the State Government willfully lied, or it is the case of a criminal who has settled the political class and his 'sins' are 'forgiven.' "The unraveling of this possible criminal riddle is the task before you, Mr. Chairman. And this could also lead to a resolution as to whether the Edo State Government of 2015 willfully defamed a person and lied to the public which are offences. "We urge you to act in your usual swift and firm manner to reassure Nigerians that persons of criminal antecedents will not be allowed in public offices. This investigation may also lay to rest, these allegations if they can no longer be substantiated. We await your action and report," the group lamented. When newsmen put a call across to Prince Kassim Afegbua, spokesperson to Hon. Dennis Idahosa, he laughed over it and said, 'such documents does not exist'.

By Simeon OSAJIE Edo State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has dissociated itself from the activities of one Ogie Vasco who the party claimed is illegally parading himself as the State Publicity of the Party. The9jaTREND reports that the State Assistant State Publicity Secretary of the party, Dr. Bolaji Ojebuoboh in a press statement made available to journalists said Ogie Vasco a meddlesome interloper, working with counter forces to undermine Edo PDP. The statement added that at no time was he (Ogie Vasco) elected State Publicity Secretary of the party and must be disregarded and ignored. According to Dr. Ojebuoboh's statement, "Our attention has been drawn to an illegal and incredibly ridiculous statement purportedly issued by one Oge Vasco who is unlawfully parading himself as the State Publicity Secretary of Ihe Peoples Democratic Party (POP) in Edo State. "We would have ordinarily ignored the six paragraph divisive scribbling filled with false and baseless ramblings on the party's recently concluded ward delegate congress which took place simultaneously across the State, but for the sake of clarity it is important to state that the rabble-rouser is an impostor and is not known to the PDP in Edo State. "More so, signing off the statement from an address that is not known to be the address of the Edo PDP Secretariat further gives him out as a meddlesome interloper and an agent of destabilization, which should be ignored by all party members and other stakeholders". Going further the statement added: "In all modesty, the recent congress held last Sunday stands as one of the best congresses ever organised in the recent history of the State, but Vasco would not know that as he has never participated or witnessed a congress before, it was peaceful and credible wah party members electing their delegates with keen supervision of the Committee set up by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Party. "It is also important to clarify that the materials used for the delegates election across the State came trom the 3-man Ad-hoc Ward Delegate Electoral Committee led by Enugu Stale Governor, Peter Mbah, and its distribution was handled at the PDP State Secretarial, hence Vasco's claims are not only unfounded but divisive and misleading. "If he was a genuine member of the party, he would know the location of the party Secretariat and would have been able to see the materials when they came because all eligible members of the Party have access to the Secretariat, while the Delegate Committee from the Party's National leadership were the ones in custody of the materials. "Is it not even perplexing that same aspirants are opposed to the Congress? Were they contesting as delegates themselves? And who appointed Ogie Vasco as the spokesperson of the aspirants if not for mischief and the crumbs that may fall from the table of any of the aspirants? "If Vasco was by any means informed, he would have known that Congress proceedings are determined by the party's national leadership, not the aspirants. Rather than showcasing his dorkiness, he should go and study the guidelines as issued by the National Working Committee in line with the Party's Constitution. "We are however not surprised at the antics of Ogie Vasco and his ilk who are working with counter forces to weaken the party. We know that their game is to undermine the party in pursuit of their pecuniary interest. "Their attempts to derail us from retaining Osadebay Avenue will not succeed. We are aware of their anti-party agenda; the same anti-party activities witnessed during the State House of Assembly election which PDP members gallantly quelled and eventually retained the maximum seats in the House. "I want to Inform Ogie Vasco and his paymasters that the same gallant party members who defeated them in the past remain resolute and united, and are surefooted and ready to batter them to submission again in the coming governorship election in the State. "Signed: Dr. BOLAJI OJEBUOBOH, ASST. STATE PUBLICITY SECRETARY".

YEEI noted that over the past 24 years, the governorship and deputy governorship roles in Edo State have predominantly been occupied by individuals from the 1950s generation. “They have successfully held these positions while in their 40s through 50s, and there is a prevailing momentum for their continuation for another eight years.” According to the group, a retrospective look at the roster of governorship, deputy governorship and governorship candidates in the last 24 years reveals a pattern of representation from The Baby Boomer Generation (1946-1964), as stated below: “Governor Lucky Igbinedion born in 1957 became governor at the age of 42, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe born in 1955 became deputy governor at 44 years, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor born in 1951 was elected as governor of Edo State at the age of 56, Mr. Lucky Imasuen born in 1960 was deputy governor at the age of 50. “Senator Adams Aliu Oshiomole born in 1952 became governor of Edo State at the age of 56, Dr. Pius Odubu born in 1957 became deputy governor at the age of 51, Mr. Godwin Obaseki born in 1957 became governor at the age of 59, Senator Roland Owie born in 1945 was governorship candidate at the age of 58, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd) born in 1954 was governorship candidate at the age of 58 while Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu born in 1962 was governorship candidate at the age of 54. “The upcoming party primaries indicate a significant number of aspirants from the Golden Age Generation of the 1950s competing for the gubernatorial position.” While acknowledging their active participation, YEEI advocates for equality, diversity and representation spanning across different generations. “The initiative proposes the consideration of younger generations or a blend of both older and younger generations as flag bearers and running mates in the forthcoming Edo 2024 Governorship Election,” YEEI added. YEEI, through its spokesperson Onaivi Ojo-Ashipa, emphasized that this proposition is not an act of resistance or revolution against the 1950s golden age generation but rather a modest plea for a commitment from political leaders in Edo State to actively embrace and practice inclusive leadership. The organization urged political party leaders, stakeholders, and influencers to use demographic insights provided as a basis for planning and decision-making during the selection of flag bearers in the upcoming party primaries, also stating that this approach takes into account the sensitivity of Edo citizens' voting behavior and responsiveness, as observed in the recent general elections.

By Easy Ekoyatah The Edo State chapter of Labour Party, (LP), has said that any governorship aspirants who cannot afford the fee for Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms lacks the capability to run for gobernatorial election. The State Chairman of the party, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi stated this at a press conference in Benin City, ahead of the party's governorship primary election slated for February 22, 2024. While speaking on the N30 million fees for the purchase of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms, charged by the party among other issues, Comrade Ogbaloi noted that the party's fee is the lowest among the three major political parties contesting the election. Recall that 18 governorship aspirants on the platform of the Labour PArty had last week protested against the N30 Million fees for the nomination forms. The aspirants, however, appealed to the national leadership of the party to reduce the fees to between N1million and N5million, noting that the N5million for Expression of Interest and N25 million for the Nomination Forms does not align with the principles and public perception of the party. He however explained that the cost of elections into political offices in Nigeria is quite expensive as witnessed from the recent general elections. According to Ogbaloi, "Political party funding is a challenge. The sale of forms is a major source through which political parties are funded. "Aside being qualified to contest election, aspirants must also be ready to show capability and capacity to fund campaigns and other election requirements. "A lot of issues that may arise as a result of primaries and election itself which has to do with litigation arising from such activities as well as other logistics issues, make it imperative for the parties to charge a reasonable fee like ours. "So that it can adequately discharge its responsibilities during and after the elections. "Therefore, any aspirant who cannot afford the fee lacks the capacity to run for the governorship election.” The Edo LP Chairman also disclosed that two aspirants have so far bought the party forms, a man and a woman, urging others to do same. He however, appealed to the governorship aspirants of the party to make the necessary sacrifice by participating in the exercise, assuring that the party is determined to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants leading to the emergence of a credible candidate. He also disclosed that the party has reduced the fee for women by 50 percent in order to ensure their participation in the governorship election. Ogbaloi however, denied the allegation that the party received the sum of N500 million from the state government in order to feature a neophyte as her candidate for the election. He noted that the guideline currently released by the leadership of the party in respect to governorship election in the state falls in line with the provision of the constitution and the Electoral Act.

By Simeon Osajie The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the ease of doing business reforms and other economic policies and programmes implemented by his administration over the past seven years, has repositioned the State as one of the top five economies in the country. Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the governor said his government will sustain efforts to promote economic expansion, through sustained investments across various sectors of the State’s economy, necessary to drive growth and development. A report by Economic Confidential, a subsidiary of PR Nigeria, has declared seven states, including Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Kaduna, Kwara, Oyo and Edo as the most viable states in Nigeria for 2022. The report was compiled from figures released by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics and the Federal Account Allocation Committee. The governor said, “Seven years ago, Edo ranked between 13th and 14th in terms of GDP in the country. Today, we are a clear 5th. We're top ten in the country in terms of the size of our economy and growth. But what is important is the growth that has occurred since we took over. “We were able to achieve this by encouraging investment inflow that has contributed to the economy of the State. It’s the people as well as the activities of government that drive the economy. We have moved Edo State from the era where the government was doing things themselves to one in which the government is creating the enabling environment for people to come and invest and do business in the State.” On plans to sustain the gains recorded in the growth of the State’s economy in the New Year, Obaseki said the government will continue to pursue reforms to facilitate economic expansion and other enablers. He said: “We have made an allocation in the 2024 budget to drive economic and employment enablers. These will enhance the ease of doing business and also facilitate the injection of private capital into the economy to create more opportunities for our teeming youth population. “Some of these include investment in our legacy projects including the Benin Enterprise Park, the Benin Port Project, and the Trailer Park projects, among others, which will spur economic expansion and growth,” Obaseki added.
