Nigeria international defender Kenneth Omeruo has been declared unavailable to play at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio because of a groin problem. The 22-year-old, who is on a season-long loan at Turkish side Kasimpasa from Chelsea, has been told by the team doctor he needs time to recover. "I feel sad about it as it was another good opportunity for me to represent my country," Omeruo told BBC Sport. "The doctor insists I need rest to start next season without injury."... Omeruo was first called up by Nigeria in January 2013 and he went on to play at that year's Africa Cup of Nations and Confederations Cup - and at the 2014 World Cup. He admitted he was looking forward to playing at the Games, especially after the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2015 and 2017 African Cup of Nations. "It is disappointing and frustrating to say the least. I'd be lying if I said I would not want to be out there playing," he said. "But at the same time I need to be fully fit to be at my best and I have no doubt that the squad will do great in Brazil. "I would also like to thank the coach [Samson Siasia] for even considering me in the first place." A firm fixture in the Kasimpasa side, such has been Omeruo's impact that the Turkish club are now exploring the option to buy him at the end of his loan spell. He joined Chelsea from Belgian side Standard Liege in 2012 and developed on loan at ADO Den Haag in Netherlands in an 18-month spell from 2012 to 2013. The centre-back, who is yet to make his competitive debut for Chelsea, then went on loan to Championship side Middlesbrough in January 2014 and made 14 appearances. He returned to Teesside again for the whole of 2014/15 season where he made 22 appearances. http://ebalsblog..co.uk/2016/04/nigeria-super-eagles-defender-kenneth.html

EBALS BLOG Former Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has been named among the top 10 goalkeepers in Europe for the 2015/16 season by the Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory. The ranking was done taking into account the number of goals conceded per match, number of minutes per goal, number of passes per match, number of saves per match, number of saves per goal conceded and the percentage of saves. The 33-year-old finished in sixth place behind illustrious goalkeepers like Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich, Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus, Kevin Trapp of PSG and Claudio Bravo of Barcelona. Coming behind Enyeama on the list are Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris, Alphonse Areola of Villareal, Keylor Navas of Real Madrid and Pepe Reina of Napoli in the list of 10. The Nigerian missed out on winning silverware with Lille this season as they lost 2-1 to PSG in Saturday’s French Cup final. Enyeama’s illustrious international career came to an abrupt end last year when he announced his retirement after a publicized fall out with former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh. He earned a record 101 caps with the Super Eagles and won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title. http://ebalsblog..co.uk/2016/04/ex-nigeria-goalkeepervincent-enyeama.html

EBALS BLOG [ url= https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPFsivObKBA http://ebalsblog..co.uk/2016/04/congolese-musician-papa-wemba-dies-aged.html The influential Congolese musician Papa Wemba has died aged 67 after collapsing during a concert. Footage from the show in Ivory Coast showed him slumped on stage. His dancers, unaware of what was happening, continued to perform before rushing to his aid. In a career spanning almost half a century, Wemba became known as the "the king of Congolese rumba". He was also a style icon, popularising the cult movement known as the Sapeurs. The young men who make up the Sapeurs take great pride in their appearance, spending huge amounts of money on designer clothes. Colourful past The musician fell ill in the early hours of Saturday morning. The cause of his death has not been established. He died before he could be brought to hospital, a spokesman for the Ivosep morgue in Abidjan told Reuters news agency. Born in 1949, Wemba, whose real name was Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, began his singing career in religious choirs. He helped modernise Congolese rumba music, making it one of the most popular sounds in Africa. Together with his bands Zaiko Langa Langa, Isifi and Viva La Musica, he racked up hit after hit, including L'Esclave and Le Voyageur, and worked with international stars like Peter Gabriel. He appeared in two feature films, Life Is Beautiful (1987) and Wild Games (1997).

EBALS BLOG [ url= https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlrXYTN4idQ http://ebalsblog..co.uk/2016/04/videohow-i-slept-with-8-men-at-time.html Criminals appear to be taking advantage of Russia's student visa system to force girls into prostitution. DW's Emma Burrows has been investigating how Nigerians come for university and disappear into the sex trade. Two years ago a woman came to Blessing Osakwe's hometown in the south of Nigeria and told the young woman there was work for her in Russia. She told Osakwe she would have a job in a supermarket, and that it would take the her just five or six months to earn the money to reimburse the costs of the visa and the journey to Russia. After paying back the $40,000, Osakwe could keep all the money she made, the woman said. Osakwe said her parents are very poor and that the idea of going to Russia to help them and to save money for her education appealed to her. She agreed. Only when she arrived, did she discover everything the woman had said was a lie. There was no supermarket job. Instead, Osakwe told DW, she was forced to work as a prostitute. There was no supermarket job. Instead, Osakwe told DW, she was forced to work as a prostitute. She was driven around Moscow to have sex with men. One night, she was taken to an apartment building where one man was apparently waiting for her. When she got inside, she discovered there were eight men. She was forced to sleep with all of them, she said. When she refused to have sex without a condom, they took back the money they had paid and beat and molested her, she said. Then they threw her from the fourth floor of the building. Osakwe broke her hip when she hit the ground. She spent two-days on life-support in the hospital until her treatment was stopped because, she said, she could not afford to pay. She now cannot walk properly and is confined to a wheelchair. Trafficked on student visas Osakwe's story is not uncommon, said Kenny Kehinde, who works with several Moscow NGOs focused on preventing human trafficking. Around 2,000-3,000 Nigerian girls - many from poor, remote villages - are brought to Russia every year for sex work, he said. "This is international modern-day slavery, where the girls are brought here with the help of some Russian government officials, some Nigerian authorities and so-called 'madams' [pimps] who exploit these girls for sex in Russia," said Kehinde. Kenny Kehinde Kehinde said many girls forced into sex work in Russia came to the country on student visas Most of the girls Kehinde dealt with had come to Russia on student visas, he said. Such visas are not easy to obtain as universities must provide supporting material for the applications. Usman Gafai, head of mission at the Nigerian Embassy in Moscow, said he, too, was aware of Nigerians being trafficked for sex to Russia. "Ten years ago, it was not such a huge problem as this," he told DW. "Those involved are an international cartel. On a daily basis they are growing and making money out of it." The Russian government needed to "carry out proper scrutiny of visa applicants back in Nigeria," Gafai said. "The majority come to Russia on a student visa, and I want to see more scrutiny of that." Kehinde said illiterate teenagers were being trafficked. "How can you bring a girl of 14- or 15-year old to study in a university, when she cannot even read and write?" he asked. Migration violations DW was able to examine passports and migration documents belonging to six Nigerian girls, including Blessing Osakwe, that showed they had arrived in Russia on student visas. The Smolny Institute of the Russian Academy of Education in Saint Petersburg told DW it had issued visa support documents in 2014 for Osakwe to study a Russian-language course in preparation for entering university. However, in an emailed statement to DW, the university's rector, Gaidar Imanov, said she never arrived at the institute, and the university had no knowledge of whether she had entered the country. Similarly, the Baltic Humanitarian Institute, another St. Petersburg university, confirmed via email it had issued documents to a would-be student from Nigeria who had never made contact to begin her course in Russia. Both universities rejected the notion that their staff may have been paid to provide documents to students who were not genuine or to traffic girls to Russia for sex, calling the allegation "fiction" and "absolutely baseless." The Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, whose embassies issue visas, told DW in a written statement that all students in Nigeria undergo an interview "without fail." It also said border officials do not allow entry into the country without confirmation from the university where they are due to study. The ministry said it "wanted to emphasize" that individuals are "personally responsible for adhering to migration legislation." Russia's Federal Migration Service told DW that it "regularly checks" for migration violations and that immigration law had been broken in more than 325,000 cases in the first two months of 2016. Despite several requests, the agency did not explain how Blessing Osakwe - and girls like her - could have entered Russia on student visas and apparently disappeared from authorities' sight for years into the sex trade. Tackling trafficking Despite legislation meant to prevent human trafficking, Russia has not shown a full commitment to tackling the problem, said Andrew Bogrand of the NGO Democracy International. "Prosecution, although existent, is very limited," he said. "More alarming, according to Russia's few women's rights NGOs, is the almost complete lack of shelter space for women who are victims of sex trafficking or domestic violence. "Corruption and trafficking are inextricably linked - and Russia fares poorly in most corruption indexes," he continued. "As long as the state continues to turn a blind eye to the problem of corruption, trafficking will flourish." 'Stay home' Blessing Osakwe recently returned to Nigeria and hopes to resume her studies. But her time in Russia has changed her life forever. It remains unclear whether she will be able to walk properly again. She has a message for other Nigerian girls who are offered jobs abroad: "Stay back home, learn to work. Even though the pay is small, it is much better than coming here to suffer or lose your life." dw.

EBALS BLOG On Thursday September 9, 1971, the morning after Ishola Oyenusi’s death, his photograph was published on the front page of a national newspaper with the following headline: “Oyenusi smiles to his death.” Below the photograph a smaller-sized description: “Trussed up but still smiling. Oyenusi at the stake yesterday.” The execution took place on a Lagos beach, with a live audience estimated at thirty thousand. At the outset the reporters describe a paradox. Here’s a man destined to die pictured smiling: “Tears and jeers followed the execution of the master armed robber, Ishola Oyenusi, and his comrades in crime at the Lagos Bar Beach yesterday. The tears flowed from a few friends and relations and those who could not stand the sight of blood. The vast majority of viewers, however, booed in derision, apparently content that a major victory had been won for peace, law and order. But the principal actor in yesterday’s Bar Beach show, notorious ‘doctor’ Ishola Oyenusi kept smiling – even on to his death.” The highest point of a condemned man’s life—his execution—points backwards, to the activities that damned him. I am told that Oyenusi and six other men were condemned for robbing a factory in Ikeja, Lagos of 28,000 pounds, killing a police constable in the process. I am told of his first robbery, when he snatched a car for his stranded girlfriend—“he was quite gentlemanly and chivalrous,” legend says—killing the owner in the process. I am told of his arrogance: In 1970 he shot a policeman who attempted to arrest him, and said, “People like you don’t talk to me like that when I am armed. I gun them down.” To the crowd that “booed in derision, apparently content that a major victory had been won for peace, law and order,” he offers a smile, as if to deride their derision. A double negative. The smile of a condemned man cancels the derisive boos of the crowd at his execution. How could he have looked upon death remarkably unfazed? His final appearance is incommensurate with my expectations. For me, an onlooker today, he has not become the “good thief,” contrite in the face of death, the thief who asks to be remembered in heaven. I encounter an inconsistency in matching the horror of his deeds with the ludicrousness of his smiling face. Two unparalleled desires coincide: the desire to mete justice on a notorious armed robber and his gang, and the desire of the notorious armed robber to exit the stage with elation, spectacle, and fulfillment. But this is only because I consider Oyenusi’s photograph. Not, for instance, the video of his execution. The mystery of photographs is that, while they seem to present irrefutable appearances, the suddenness with which a picture is taken merely hints at the totality of a moment. His smile might have prefigured an inconsolable wail, and his inconsolable wail a harrowing dying declaration. Regardless I consider a photograph in which he smiles while trussed, facing a fourteen-man firing squad. Today you and I observe this image mostly on a screen. It is likely that after the front page of the newspaper was scanned, the photograph was cropped. Now it is shared as a somewhat blurry sepia photograph. On that technical level, the photograph of Oyenusi’s smile is illumined by how far I can zoom in. Do details blur in an attempt to bring his face closer? Are peculiarities of his face indeterminate when the image is transferred across digital devices? I am uncertain about a response to Oyenusi’s life based entirely on an image of this sort. Considered in this manner my speculations pivots easily towards the mysterious, half-assured sophisms. What is the promise of a paradoxical photograph? What man smiles on his execution day? Not the smile of a martyr, who glimpses paradise. I am only barely informed of those who mourned him—“The tears flowed from a few friends and relations and those who could not stand the sight of blood.” His narrative is entirely framed within the milieu of crime. There is no respect he deserves, I am told, no humanity except punishment, no qualifying word but “notorious,” and therefore no counter-narrative. A recent recount of his notoriety by the Nigerian website Pulse.ng in December 2015—“Profiling Nigeria's Notorious Armed Robbers: (‘Doctor’ Ishola Oyenusi)”—explain his smile as follows: “Before he was executed on Wednesday, September 8, 1971, at the famous Bar Beach show in front of 30,000 watching Nigerians, no one believed that ‘The Doctor’ would be captured, as he was famed for ‘disappearing’ or his body capable of being pierced by bullets. In fact, he must have had so much faith in his charms that he smiled all the way to the stake and even as soldiers aimed their rifles at him and his co-criminals, Oyenusi still radiated an aura of invincibility.” What this suggests, in its sure-footed rhetoric, is a consolatory sentiment also clichéd. You are uncertain of what to make of a society where a man as feared as Oyenusi thrives. You exaggerate his monstrosities, ennoble him with an “aura of invincibility,” and mystify his power over you. Think about the long list of Nigerian criminals characterized as possessing charms. Think about the assortment of diabolical items on display when robbers are paraded shirtless by the police. Considered in this light, Oyenusi’s smile is a taunt. Like Adolf Eichmann in a Jerusalem court, his smile is declarative: “I am not the monster I am made out to be,” “I am a little leaf in the whirlwind of history.” If you push these declarations to their farthest limit, you encounter the same vicious paradox. “Trussed up but still smiling.” How may this photograph cease to be one portraying an armed robber? Even Oyenusi, at the final moment, consoled himself with clichés. He is reported to have screamed, “I am dying for the offense I have committed.” Whether he believed this or not isn’t relevant to anyone but him, for sometimes we peddle clichés to arrive at individual convictions. For those who outlived him, whose attention is repeatedly drawn to his contrariety, the most promising entry to his story is what’s uncertain, likely unknowable, about his demeanor. Dying as theatre. Everyone has, for the fraction of a moment, considered the instant of death. To die surrounded by those we love, on a bed. To die watched by those who consider us enemies, on a stake. To die by accident, our bodies trammeled by crushed metal. However impertinent some of these possibilities are, dying presents itself as a performance. We have been cast as principal actors. This is a way of looking at Oyenusi’s smile. Let us speculate for a moment on the sort of viewers gratified by the shooting of condemned men. Oyenusi’s execution was preceded, months earlier, by other firing squads. On August 24, 1970, three men, former Biafran soldiers, were publicly executed for armed robbery. On March 25, 1971, two armed robbers were also publicly executed. Videos from the AP Archives document the executions. The men are dragged, hooded, tied, prayed for; martial music is played to the marching strides of army officers. The sentence is read, then a line of kneeling soldiers intermittently open fire. Earlier, the camera’s panning movement captures the surrounding crowd. There are those who climb on trucks to see better, who crouch in front, who stand behind. People clamber to find vantage spots. As soon as rifles are trained at the villains, there is anticipatory silence. Oyenusi’s smile cannot escape the public he faces to whom it is likely addressed. Our relationship with the paradox his photograph presents is bound with our interest in violent, public justice. An execution is public if it invites viewers to watch justice unfold. In this sense the viewers are allied with the executioner, chastising the executed, surviving him. The prevailing proposition is that, upon the death of a dangerous armed robber, the world is less dangerous. Yet it is possible to think of a larger climate of fear that survives the feared. When we look back at Nigeria in the early 1970s, barely emerging from the chaos of a War, led by a military government, we consider a milieu in which a violent response to crime and dissidence was consensual. Ishola Oyenusi’s execution is the synecdochical flashpoint of that milieu. A public display of justice does not necessarily resolve a larger climate of fear. We understand that a crime is committed against the community whose law is violated, not merely the individual victim. We also permit the state’s use of violence to ensure that the framework of its existence—law and order—is not threatened. But here’s a dilemma: how do we separate such acts of state as capital punishment from the bureaucracy that makes it impossible and unachievable to ensure the safety of “innocent” Nigerian lives? That many of us stand adjudged and disposable—“suffering and smiling,” looking and laughing, matching misery with mirth—is one lesson from Oyenusi’s demeanor. If this comparison seems defective, I ask you to return to the banality of Oyenusi’s execution, right there on his smiling face. EBALS BLOG Abundant Blessings Memorise: Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. –Deuteronomy 28:3 Read: Deuteronomy 28:1-2 (KJV) 1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. Bible in One Year: 2 Samuel 12-13 Proverbs 11:18-31 MESSAGE: Jesus Christ said; “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33). In other words, there are abundant blessings in the kingdom of God. It goes without saying that there is wisdom in seeking to please God above all other ambitions. The Almighty God revealed the secret of abundant blessings of His people in today’s scriptural reading; abundant blessing is embedded in perfect obedience to the Word of God..... Many people think that the moment they become Kingdom seekers, they will enter into a world of penury. This is the deceit of the devil which has unfortunately been believed through the ages. The devil has succeeded in making many people believe that unless they serve him, they cannot make it in life. He even had the audacity to attempt deceiving Jesus Christ during the temptations in the wilderness, but our Lord defeated him (Luke 4:5-7). Beloved, I want to announce to you that there are abundant blessings in our Lord Jesus Christ; my life is a living testimony of this. Before I gave my life to Christ, I used to borrow money from my own drive to fuel my car two weeks into a new month. It was when I gave my life to Christ that I began to know the true meaning of prosperity. Deuteronomy 8:18 says: “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” The Psalmist says that unless the Lord builds a house, the builders build but in vain (Psalms 127:1). Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ also corroborates this when he wrote: “6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.” - 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 May the abundant blessing from the throne of God be your portion in Jesus’ name. Prayer Point: Father, please let Your abundant blessings be my portion this season in Jesus’ name. http://ebalsblog..co.uk/2016/04/open-heavens-daily-devotional-sunday.html

EBALS BLOG On the night that Jumai was kidnapped from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, she called her dad. She was in the back of a truck, packed in with her schoolmates as men with guns tried to take them away. Her father, Daniel, told her to jump out of the van - but then the line crackled and the signal dropped. He ran out of the house to try to find phone signal. When he called back, a man answered: "Stop calling, your daughter has been taken away". Daniel realised then that her fate was "in the hands of God". The next day he tried to call again but the line was dead. Although some families of the missing girls were happy for us to use their photos and names, we have changed the names of Jumai and her father to protect their identity. Until the girls were taken, the area around Chibok had been relatively peaceful. Islamist militant group Boko Haram had attacked villages further north and east but this busy market town had escaped. Read more after cut... Daniel, who lives in the nearby town of Mbalala, sent his daughter off to school on 14 April 2014 to sit the first of her final exams. But late that night, in one of the most organised attacks of its insurgency, Boko Haram stormed the school compound and kidnapped Jumai, along with 275 of her classmates. His daughter never managed to jump off the truck, like some girls who managed to escape. But Daniel has not yet given up hope that he will get her back. The two were very close. "I understood her the best," he says. "She worked harder than any of her three brothers and she rode a motorcycle like a man." A few months ago, Daniel decided to try his daughter's phone number again. A man's voice answered: "This phone belongs to my wife, what do you want?" "Who are you?" Daniel replied. The man said: "Who are you?" Daniel ended the call. A few days later he called the number again. Again the man answered. "Why are you calling this number?" he asked. Daniel lied: "I am calling you because I knew you from Maiduguri" - the largest city in Borno state. "If you did know me you would not dial this number," the man replied. He called himself Amir Abdullahi - addressing himself as a militant leader. After that, Daniel didn't call again. EBALS BLOG The office of the first lady of Edo state Mrs. Lara Oshiomhole was on Monday thrown into what appears to be a scandal following the unlawful detention of one Mrs. Jennifer Ero, a friend to the Governor’s wife and coordinator of Child Protection Network (CPN), on the orders of Lara at the state CID. Mrs. Oshiomhole petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike to arrest and detain Mrs. Ero over alleged poor handling of the training of the Internally Displayed Persons, (IDPs). Mrs. Ero was allegedly detained at the Police State Headquarters from Monday to Tuesday. The Child Protection Network (CPN) which she coordinates is a network of several other organisations that canvasses for better life, education and good health for underprivileged children. The network also advocates against child abuse, child labour, child hawking, trafficking and other social vices against children across the country. The report regarding the illegal detention has it that Jennifer Ero was said to be given a contract by Mrs. Oshiomhole to provide computer training and other skills acquisition techniques for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Uhogua Ovia North East LGA of the State. The programme initiated recently by the Cape Verdian wife of governor Oshiomhole on the auspices of her pet project ”We Care Trust” in collaboration with Ella P Collections and the Edo State Government ought to have benefited 160 young and adult IDPs in Uhogua. Our source who preferred to remain anonymous told our correspondent that some persons in the office of the first lady demanded a bribe of N500,000 of the contract sum from Jennifer Ero, which she bluntly rebuffed because the contract sum was in the neighbourhood of N3 million plus. The persons later conspired against her by laying false allegations of using obsolete materials (desktop computers instead of Laptops computers), incompetence and corruption against her to Mrs. Oshiomhole who without verifying the allegations ordered her detention. Records have shown that Mrs. Ero along with her colleagues having been handling similar projects for the European Union, EU, United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO nationwide without defaults or allegations of subverting the process. Another source speaking anonymously confirmed to our reporter that ”Jennifer Ero and Mrs. Oshiomhole actually had a minor misunderstanding which has been resolved”, but declined further details stating that ” both parties have reconciled”. Furthermore, when a call was put to Jennifer Ero, she said, ”she didn’t want to speak on the matter and agreed to contact us later, which she never did. Her mobile line was left unanswered when she was contacted later. Probing further, a call was put to the Chief Security Officer, CSO to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Mr. Aruna Yusuf, regarding the illegal detention which he allegedly ordered. Mr. Aruna dispelled being aware of such and directed our reporter ”to call the commissioner of police to confirm”. When contacted with his phone number, the Commissioner of police, Mr. Chris Ezike to confirm the report of illegal detention of Mrs. Ero, the commissioner declined comment and told us ”to see him at the office please”. Some two years ago in a similar but horrifying streak, Governor Adams Oshiomhole brazenly threw caution and decency overboard and told Mrs. Joyce Ifijeh, a widow who was allegedly trading along a major road in Benin City to “Go And Die”. The governor’s foreign wife has been weighing and flaunting her imperial powers of late – as the first lady to a man who covets the rawness of powers – showing some kindness as well, to the chagrin of political observers. It has been confirmed by our reporter that the first lady yesterday forcibly made Mrs. Ero to write a cheque to return the unspent balance of the money on the training exercise which according to Lara, was supposed to have lasted for a month but was halted after two weeks because of irreconcilable differences. Mrs. Ero allegedly signed undertaken not to speak to the press over the matter. The last is yet to be heard about this report as we await the confirmation of the commissioner of police. http://ebalsblog..co.uk/2016/04/lara-oshiomhole-unlawfully-detains-edo.html

Zara is 17 years old and she has a terrible story. It is the story of Boko Haram and what this brutal Islamist group is doing to thousands of people in north-eastern Nigeria and surrounding countries. Zara was kidnapped by Boko Haram and then freed by the army, but now finds herself sometimes wishing she was back in the forest rather than suffering the stigma of life as a Boko Haram bride. She wasn’t one of the missing Chibok schoolgirls, and until now didn’t have her own social media hashtag, but like thousands of others – free or still captive – is deeply traumatised.... In telling #ZarasStory it’s the first time she has spo ken to outsiders about her terrible experience a year on, and the pain she still suffers to this day. “They gave us a choice – to be married, or to be a slave. I decided to marry,” she said. There is little difference, but for the child she was soon bearing. Kidnap survivor, Zara, in her village ife was tough and dangerous. The air force jets bombarded the vast Sambisa Forest where the militants have their camps and from where soldiers rescued her and eventually returned her to her relatives. “The women in our family realised she was three months pregnant,” said her uncle Mohamed Umaru, who told us more of her story. “In our family it happens that some of us are Christians and some are Muslims. She was a Christian before she was kidnapped but the Boko Haram who married her turned her into a Muslim.” There was a split in the family over what to do and they took a vote as to whether she should abort or keep the child. The majority prevailed and she gave birth to a boy. “She said her husband’s father is called Usman, so that is how she named the child,” Mohamed said. And then the insults began. “People call me a Boko Haram wife and called me a criminal. They didn’t want me near. They didn’t like me,” Zara said as a tear slowly slipped down her cheek. Kidnap survivor, Zara, in her village he now sits inside the small walled compound around her house, afraid to go outside because of the cruel insults of the neighbourhood children – messages of hate learned from their parents. “They didn’t like my child. When he fell sick nobody would look after him,” she said. Last weekend, as Zara slept outside with Usman because of the heat, a snake got into their compound and the boy was killed. He was just nine months old. Half the family celebrated what they called God’s will. “Some were happy that he died,” Zara said. “They were happy the blood of Boko Haram had gone from the family.” They said thank God that the kid is dead, that God has answered their prayers,” Mohamed explained. “Sometimes she says she wants to go to school and become a doctor and help society, but sometimes, when people insult her, she says she wants to go back to the Sambisa Forest. “She always talks about her husband who happens to be a Boko Haram commander. She says the guy is nice to her and that he wants to start a new life with her.” Listening to Zara’s story, told quietly with eyes flicking down at the ground, it is hard to imagine anyone going through what she has gone though, let alone a 17-year-old girl. Mohamed said Zara’s life had become so intolerably hard that on one occasion she had said she wanted to “go and do a suicide mission”. “She will, she will, she will definitely do that if she gets the chance,” he added. Abandoned But there is so much confusion in her face and in her answers – she is not a killer, she is just a child. “The feeling for the forest is strong now, but it will go away. I will forget the time with Boko Haram, but not yet,” Zara said. She says she is in love with her husband although she believes she has been brainwashed. She feels abandoned by her family and stigmatised by her community. She is sad, she is angry, she is confused. She is 17. “People should understand that these children didn’t create this, but if we continue to stigmatise people with such trauma we might create something much, much bigger than Boko Haram in the future,” her uncle says. “You are creating a more dangerous thing than Boko Haram if you grow up not welcomed by society and with nobody wanting to help you. “My prayer is for the government to do something. They should come to their aid and reintegrate them and show them love.” So many girls like Zara have been abducted, so many others are still being held. There is torment for those who wait and hope, and there is pain for those who survive. Source:http://ebalsblog..co.uk/2016/04/boko-haram-gave-us-choice-to-be-married.html
