Same way he is rebuilding Murtala Muhammed International Airport into an elite, superb world class edifice and facility that declares Nigeria's status as the undisputed Giant of Africa.

Same way in April he ordered a comprehensive nationwide rehabilitation and upgrade of all sports facilities including school sports facilities, meaning that Abuja and Surulere National Stadium Lagos, among others, are soon to regain their world class glory.

Tinubu is a real leader. And he doesn't talk much.

Soludo have ran out of steam. There's nothing happening in Anambra state at the moment. The newly dualised roads are peeling off one after the other. The state seems broke. There's an attempt to borrow #70B to 'fix erosion and fight insecurity'. The second airport and the access road to it appears to have taken the lion share of state resources.

Soludo definitely has grand dreams for Anambra, but I have always questioned the capacity and calibre of his cabinet, especially in his first tenure... His first commissioner of works cut so many corners that it still threatens a lot of the civil works that were carried out! The current commissioner of works seems confident and has more vitality for the portfolio!


This lack of capacity of the cabinet is exemplified in the way they have handled erosion sites in the state! I have not seen enuff imagination and innovation in tackling the menace! In my humble opinion, aside from the few cases when the erosion cuts an important roadway....i see no reason why the state should adopt massive civil engineering to stop the erosion!

Methinks the best way to tackle erosion is through innovative early environmental interventions and proper land management! I am almost sure that the state lacks the drone tachnology to spatially map and use satelite to remotely sense and detect erosion b4 they occur...........many Nigerians are in that field, our own Igbo brothers also build drones........we can rent satelite space to map our vegetation.........its outrageous that we do not have a course on land management and erosion prevention in our schools, every Anambra indigene by now ought to know what erosion is and how to prevent it! Simple damming of erosion paths ( at regular intervals) during the dry season can cause a build-up of soil sediment behind the dams and also slow the runoff water, causing the erosion in the first place! we can even use refuse, vegetation, and old tires to build the dams! Let us put on our thinking caps for once!

THE SOUTH EAST HAS A PERCEPTION PROBLEM — AND IT IS COSTING US

📊 Nigeria's July 2026 Security Perception Index should make every South Easter think seriously.

According to the figures published by Statisense/NigeriaPolls, the FCT recorded a security perception score of 52.1, Lagos 48.3, Ogun 46.5, Ekiti 45.2, Osun 44.8, Ondo 43.6, Oyo 42.9, Kwara 41.3, Delta 40.7, Edo 40.1, Akwa Ibom 39.5 and Enugu 38.8.

The issue is not simply the number.

It is what that number means for investment, business confidence and the future of the South East.

An investor does not only study crime statistics. Investors study perception. They listen to what people say about a place, monitor the media, watch social media and speak to people on the ground.

And this is where we, as South Easterners, need to have an uncomfortable conversation with ourselves.

ARE WE HELPING TO DESTROY THE IMAGE OF OUR OWN HOMELAND?

One of the most disturbing aspects of the South East's image problem is that some of the loudest negative voices about the region are actually Igbo voices themselves.

Go online and look at conversations about the South East.

Too often, fellow Igbos — particularly some people living in the diaspora — are among those amplifying the most frightening narratives about what is happening back home.

Every kidnapping story becomes evidence that the entire South East is unsafe.

Every attack becomes evidence that nobody can live there.

Every political disagreement becomes another reason to declare the region "finished."

Some people who have lived abroad for years sometimes describe the South East as though the entire region is a permanent battlefield.

We need to ask ourselves honestly:

What are we achieving by doing this?

WHEN NEGATIVE NEWS BECOMES VALIDATION

There is another uncomfortable issue we need to discuss.

For some people in the diaspora, there appears to be a psychological tendency to relish every negative development coming out of Nigeria because it validates their decision to leave.

When insecurity occurs, it becomes:

"You see why I left Nigeria."

When the economy struggles:

"You see why I left."

When something goes wrong in the South East:

"I told you people Nigeria is finished."

The worse things appear at home, the more justified some people feel about having left.

This may be understandable at a personal level, but it can have a collective economic consequence when such narratives are repeatedly amplified to large international audiences.

There is a difference between being grateful for the opportunities one has found abroad and constantly celebrating the failures of the country or region one came from.

Your success abroad does not require Nigeria to fail.

And your decision to leave does not require the South East to become a place nobody wants to live or invest in.

CRITICISM IS NECESSARY — SELF-DESTRUCTION IS NOT

There is absolutely nothing wrong with reporting insecurity.

If there is kidnapping, report it.

If there is criminality, expose it.

If government fails, demand accountability.

If security agencies fail, speak up.

But there is a difference between reporting a problem and continuously marketing an entire region as a dangerous place.

Social media does not always provide context.

An investor sitting in London, New York, Toronto, Dubai or Johannesburg may not understand the difference between one community and another.

They may simply search "South East Nigeria security" and encounter hundreds of posts from Nigerians themselves describing the region as somewhere nobody should visit or invest in.

That affects perception.

And perception affects investment.

THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES ARE REAL

An investor considering Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Imo or Ebonyi will want to know:

Can my workers move freely?

Can my trucks operate?

Can I protect my assets?

Can I operate without disruption?

Is the security situation improving?

And what do people from the region themselves say about it?

That last question matters.

Because if the people of a region continuously tell the world that their homeland is unsafe, outsiders will naturally factor that perception into their decisions.

The consequence can be fewer investments, fewer businesses, fewer jobs, weaker property demand and reduced economic opportunities.

THE DIASPORA HAS A SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Those of us living abroad have a particularly important responsibility.

If you are in America, Britain, Canada, Germany, South Africa or elsewhere, remember that your social-media audience may include people who have never visited the South East.

They may know the region only through what you tell them.

So tell the truth.

Report insecurity when it happens.

Demand better governance.

Expose criminals.

But also report the businesses operating successfully.

Talk about the factories.

Talk about the entrepreneurs.

Talk about the universities.

Talk about the technology companies.

Talk about the communities where ordinary people are living normal lives.

Tell the complete story.

THE SOUTH EAST DOES NOT NEED PROPAGANDA

We don't need to pretend everything is perfect.

It isn't.

There are genuine security challenges that must be confronted.

But the South East is also not simply a crime scene.

Millions of people live, work, trade, study, build houses and run businesses across the region every day.

That reality deserves to be acknowledged too.

We must fix what is wrong without destroying confidence in what is working.

To my fellow Igbos, especially those in the diaspora:

Criticise when criticism is necessary. Demand security. Demand accountability. Expose criminality. But do not turn every failure in Nigeria into validation that you made the right decision by leaving, while simultaneously helping to convince everyone else that the homeland you left is beyond redemption.

Your life abroad can be successful without your homeland being portrayed as a failure.

Your migration can be a success story without Nigeria's problems becoming something to celebrate.

And your love for your new country does not have to mean contempt for the place you came from.

The South East needs investment, not a permanent reputation for insecurity.

We need jobs.

We need industries.

We need technology.

We need infrastructure.

We need tourism.

We need diaspora investment.

And we need confidence.

Let us demand change without destroying confidence in our homeland.

Because if we continually tell the world that the South East is unsafe, eventually some investors may believe us.

And when investment stays away, it is ordinary South Easterners — not the people arguing on social media — who ultimately bear the economic cost.

Every country protects her retail trade. WHY? Together with agriculture, retail trade provides easily accessible jobs for the less skilled amongst the population. It is also easier to start a retail shop than say-opening a factory.
No one has said that the Chinese can not do business in Nigeria, after all they have been running their Chinese shops/towns for ages here, What every thinking mind has said is that they should not torpedo the retail sector of the economy with their cheap adulterated products, at a great risk to the economy.

When a Nigerian trader/business man makes profit in Nigeria, he spends most of it here thereby energising the economy. He builds houses, buying Dangote cement that is produced locally and owned by a fellow Nigerian. He sends his kids to government/private schools in Nigeria and pay handsomely. He buys land in Nigeria most times, and pays to fellow Nigerians thereby enriching the economy. He banks with Nigerian banks that are owned by Nigerian from different regions, and makes shareholders of those banks to rip huge profits. Because he stays in Nigeria, most of his disposable income are spent here, with the attendant VAT payments and taxes. A Chinese seldom wait for all that. Likewise Indians. They are on the next flight out of town with their huge profits..

It is not like the federal government is not aware of all these. They are. It's just that some people in government have chosen to act dodgy for obvious reasons. Otherwise, why are businesses in other sectors being protected from skewed competitions from foreigners, but those areas dominated by easterners are willfully surrendered to foreigners irrespective of the great harm to the local economy?
It is also important to note that the uptick in the presence of the Chinese retail businesses in Nigeria today, is happening as the Chinese authorities start to tighten visa rules for Nigerian businesses/business men..
That is not a coincidence..


When there was a move to start importing beef into this country to augment the low quality products from the fulani herders, the federal government moved swiftly to stop that! Today, irrespective of the quantity or quality of beef produced by the fulani, we are forced to buy solely from them! Infact, a federal ministry of Livestocks have been created to take care of their demands. Buhari banned rice importation. How can a Chinese blatant take over of the economy enrich Nigerians??

When a foreign producer delves into wholesaling and retailing his products.., going as far as opening shops next to the same traders who just bought from him, then there seem to be a deliberately calculated programe to annihilate the "trader".. When the government of the day goes as far as defending the foreign nationals who will import goods into Nigeria, wholesale/retail and then spirit away their earnings back to their home countries overnight, in serious capital flight, and the government supports this, you need no one to tell you that a SILENT WAR is being waged against a segment of the population!
