Please DO NOT use any oil. Your gear is a CVT gear and uses a different type of fluid.

Must be NS oil or oils meant for CVTs

Yes, NS-1 is the recommended fluid but this has been phased out by Nissan. If you can't find it, then use the newer NS-2 fluid.

If the gear oil is dark in colour or smells burnt, then its overdue for change. You drain it out completely and also have the filter replaced.

Is your car a CVT transmission? This is completely different from a regular Automatic Transmission. And so requires a different type of fluid. Take note.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU USE THE WRONG TRANSMISSION FLUID
The most common situation where the wrong transmission fluid is used is in the case of using automatic transmission fluid in place of variable transmission fluid and vice versa. Adding ATF to a to a CVT will eventually result in the death of your transmission.

WARNING SIGNS
There are a few warning signs that you can look for to indicate that you have used the wrong fluid in your transmission including:

Strange engine sounds such as clunking
Stalling after changing gears
Gears that won’t shift
Rough shifting
Gears that slip
Clutch locking up or Dragging Clutch
Check Engine Light On

Your engine is a 2ZR-FE. Recommended engine oil is SAE 0w20.

Recommended ATF is Toyota WS.

From the manual it says 3quarts for initial fill while it's 6quarts for total fill. The former is when you're draining and filling while the latter is when there's no single oil in the gear for example a new gear.

A quick question.. Should the transmission fluid be drained when hot or cold? And conversely..can the transmission fluid be poured into a hot or cold gearbox?

I advise you follow the Manual since you want to DIY.

Am more conversant with Volkswagen. For theirs, you allow the car cool down. Then add your fluid making sure the car is on a flat surface.
