Owohfasa: hello everyone, please i need an experienced person whom processed his/her admission personally to clear this curiosity from my mind on satisfying the proof of financial statement required by most schools in the US during admission process for international students. can someone who has a closing balance of 2M which is not close to the required closing balance of $20,000 for community college and $41,000 for most university secure admission? Honestly, opening or closing balances have nothing to do with securing admission . Securing admission have everything to do with your GPA, GRE/GMAT and TOEFL Test scores, LOR and SOP. If you are thinking about bank statement to show during your visa interview for unfunded admission, then you will have to show something more substantial than 2M. |

tobishills12: Hey guys,
Please I need to ask if its possible for a political science graduate to study computer science or any related technological course in masters given the fact that the person is a programmer who had done quite a number of projects in the web and artificial intelligence (machine learning) and has a very attractive portfolio.
Please help Yes because you have done some work in IT (Web and AI). Prepare to have something for the VOs to convince them that your masters program is not your first time to switch to IT. Once big switches like this is spotted, the 'why the switch' question will definitely come. What tools do you use in your Machine Learning? |

EzekielMab: Hi guys..
Good evening ..
I have B.Eng Computer Engineering.
I want to go for M.sc in Information Technology.
But then the question I have to ask is that do you have to pay your turion before leaving Nigeria?
I have litte savings and total inflow and outflow of 6m from sponsor per annum.
I don't have TOEFL yet though and transcript
Can I fly?
Who can guide me??
Pls I need advice..
Ezekielmab@yahoo.com if you can guide me from beginning to end Bolded was a little funny Typically you don't pay tuition before you travel. A couple of schools have been noted to require tuition deposits from international students before arrival. Note though that it's important to have enough financial backup because you will spend. I don't want to read further meaning into that question. Get your transcript and plan to write TOEFL. if you dig deep though you will find a handful of schools that will exempt Nigeria from TOEFL. But it's better for you to write it. Nobody will guide you better than you can guide yourself. Use this thread and use Google. Best of luck. |

ChristoBam: Hey guys I need your help with something. I'm preparing for my visa interview towards the spring semester but I have somethings to contend with. I might find it a little difficult to resume in January due to some reasons. I know it's possible to differ from Fall semester to Spring semester but I want to know if it's possible to do the same from Spring to Fall semester. And if I'm given a student visa next month, will I still be able to use it for the fall semester I'm differing to or I'll need another visa interview. Careful. If you plan to defer from Spring to Fall, then your I-20 needs to be updated by your school to show your are coming by fall '18. Otherwise, your time of entry which is stated on your I-20 would have expired and you will begin to have issues with Customs and Border Protection. |

Perotti: Well, my great people, its kinda long overdue for my POE and American transcript. Departed the shores of Nigeria on the 13th of August via Royal Air Maroc and it was a nice experience except the long layer overs (10 hrs in Casablanca, 7 hrs at JFK). Nice meal aboard the flight to JFK. Got to JFK around 2am and my POE officer (Asian man) asked me just two questions I can't remember again but no big deal. The flight from JFK to Denver was nice but long too (4 hrs). Got to Denver and took a prebooked shuttle to Fort Collins. Stayed with a nice white family for 3 days before moving to my own place. First week of classes has just flown by and its been great here so far. My 2 cents advice for those who do not want to take the GRE is that the stress of taking the test is really worth it especially for the sake of funding. I wont advise anyone to come here without properly loading up financially even if you get funding.
Stats; GRE: 307, 4.0 AWA, TOEFL: 105, 4.02/5.0 (BSc), 72.3% (MSc), research/work experience (1 year), Agric Microbiology/Plant Science. I got my admission+funding via an advert on Twitter, the PI was looking for a student to do some research relating to my field and I threw in my CV, and God did the rest. I advise anyone with similar stats to follow Profs on twitter doing a similar research, they do tweet or retweet grad students openings in related labs. My desperation for funding led me to twitter and its another goldmine of info.
Cheers and see you all at the top!!! I do not want to sound like a spoiler because that's not my intention. I have already liked your post Perotti but I am saying this for those that are intending to come. It's good to have funding that are tied to a faculty and a particular research grant. Honestly it's better than not having anything at all and being unable to afford the fees out of pocket. The challenge is that you find it difficult to extricate yourself from the faculty and that particular research because that's where your funding comes from. Especially when you find that the research direction does not fit with what you are really passionate about and what you want to do, or when some other matters starts arising. When you have a funding from the department as against a particular faculty, you are not tied down to one man and any faculty member can be your adviser. You can change advisers if things go wrong. I am studying Information Systems under the School of Business and PhD students in the School of Computer Science are jealous of us because their funding is usually tied to a research grant and they find it hard to come out unlike us. Like I said earlier, it's far better than not having anything at all and it's just a word of advise for people still intending to come. For more of this type of information, find the free book titled "THE PHD GRIND" by Philip Guo and read. He was a one time PhD student of Stanford University and currently a faculty of University of California San Diego. All the best! |

Kukaman: Hello house, I'm a newbie here and would like to ask a question on student visa and I really need your candid advise. Please I had a degree(online) from UK and want to study in USA for my masters. I already received one I20 from a private university but wouldn't want to use it as advised by a friend to ignore a private university and go for a public university which usually boost chances of being approved a student visa. I have 3 schools awaiting their I20 which will turn in latest early next month based on the submission of application. Kindly assist on what to tell the interviewer so as to convince the interviewer that I would return to Nigeria after the course of study as this will be my first time of being interviewed at the embassy. I don't want to mess things up hence, need your expertise advise.
Thanks. Download these transcripts and read. I must confess you guys are doing a great job. thanks for giving ur time to answer questions. am currently serving, will be rounding up by December this year, I want to apply for my masters in U.S universities, however, the only means of paying my tuition fee is to secure a scholarship or tuition waiver. am planning towards next fall. will be going to school at the end of the years so that I can talk with some few lecturers who can be my referee. pls I need advice concerning schools that can offer tuition waiver. the course I intend applying for is international relations, or development studies. Thanks Apart from looking through all the post on the thread which frankly is cumbersome but might be rewarding, you can also download some of the compiled transcripts and read. You will see the school that gave people funding on those transcripts. Also try to google Teaching assistantship and Graduate assistantship and similar terms. All the best. |

patomaniac: Hello guy, is there a way or site you can check if a program is accredited for a part school
Thanks in advance. Most times, the accreditation information is shown on the department's main website. Just know the name of the key accreditation (eg is AASCB for business schools) for your discipline and check the department's website to see if you intended school have it. You can also check the accrediting institutions website (aascb.edu in this case) to find a list of all accredited schools. |

Your case is still under review; this type of processing can sometimes involve several different sections and can take several months or longer. The unit completing the administrative processing does not always have full control of the timing involved.
We understand your concerns and will contact you when we are able to proceed. We appreciate your patience as we undergo this process.
Sincerely, Start working on deferring your admission to spring '18 ASAP. September is already at hand and that's when early application opens for most schools for Fall '18. Have that in mind too. Delayal is not denial! |

For the most part, you do not need official transcript to apply for admission. Students copy or Online copy will do. You send official transcript only to schools that have accepted you. Travel Transcript
Arrived in New York and currently chilling at my sister's place.
I tool Qatar airways, which I will never do again of I can avoid it. It was about 11 hours to Doha, then a 2 hour layover before another 11 hour flight to New York.
I got to New York around 10am. Customs clearance was easy. The officer just asked me where I was going. I told him then he did the whole scan fingerprint palaver and waved me through.
I got outside, ordered for a Super Shuttle. It arrived 30 minutes later. I got in and landed at my sister's place.
Heading to Cambridge tomorrow. I'm dead tired.... Sorry about your bad experience with Qatar Airways. Your journey sounds so long comparing it to mine with Royal Air Maroc. It was 4hrs from Lagos to Casablanca and 7 hrs from Casablanca to NY, totaling 11 hours which equals the time for one leg of your journey. Congrats and please get some rest. |

Fenix: Hello. I am so sorry to hear about this. I can only imagine your disappointment.
From everything I have read online, getting a visa to attend a community College is not easy at all. Very few people appear to be granted a visa for a community college. I would advise you relax and try and get into a proper university.
Frankly I struggle to understand why anyone would even want to consider a community College. You can save the money you would spend on a CV towards a proper university degree. Well one reason people go to community college is because it's comparatively affordable. I recently met a fellow doctoral guy who is from the state our school is located and he has been attending community colleges for this same reason I believe. Our school is the first proper university he is attending. |

Hisvoice: My Observation (Post 2) Special thanks to everyone for their congratulatory messages. Overcoming the dour feeling experienced after the exam (where you put your head on a BRT/LAGBUS window) thinking of what you could've done right is enough to propel for success. On a lighter note, one of the good experience GRE brought is the urge to open this thread everyday and meeting virtual friends with similar ambition. Infact! I commend this guys/ladies - ponpon, time2smile, ecoleco, iekene, Scholastica et al - for the info and help you dish out here. Special thanks to Lagosismyhome (on the visa thread), who I never met even till now but paid 50k to register for me during the promo time. God bless you all.
I discovered few things about GRE exam, which is important to impending test takers - either 1st, 2nd or my category;
1. About 60-70% of 1st time takers re-write more than once in other to get a desired score. Probably, due to the fact that they were not familiar with the concept of the exam or not too prepared for what they met. Therefore, if you are a 1st time taker, try as much as possible to prepare very well to get your desired score. Ask questions from people who have experienced it. 2. Some of the available books are not adequate enough for the real GRE questions. Although some topics are more elaborated in few ones. Carefully select books for reading. Don't just read randomly. 3. Generally, it is easier to improve in Quant than Verbal. Most students, including chinese struggle with the Verbal questions partly because of the convoluted style of writing them. Believe me, if you get the concept, you can do well in it. 4. Low GRE score does not equate failure in securing admission if other aspect of the admission package is good. Funding! is probably difficult with low GRE but schools like (ETSU, TTU) still offer funding for low scorers. Do your assignment well and don't raise the bar too high.
Next post is for Verbal discussion. Feel free to ask questions. Nice one. Success in all your endeavours! |
