Dont mind all those thots outside ...nobody requires you to have any yellow fever thing travelling to the USA.

Might be a requirement to some african countries like south Africa but to USA or Europe... Nope.
Yeah, correct. It was required of me when I visited an African country.

usnews.com, mba.com and the likes should be very handy for you at the moment. As you might have read on this thread series, pick some high ranking schools (use usnews.com to check ranks), some schools that match your profile (CGPA and test scores) and some safety (at all at all) schools.

Visit each school website to learn more.

Hey guys please I need your help on something. I've applied to a u.s university for this fall and I was notified through email that I'm admissible by my profile and I need to send my sponsor's bank statement to complete the admission process. The thing is that money goes in and out of my sponsor's account and presently the account balance is not up to the balance needed by the school and it'll likely remain so till the end of this month. The question I want to ask from the gurus of this thread is if it is possible to have the school direct my admission process to January instead of the fall semester which I applied for because I'm expected to send the bank statement before the 20th of this month. So that by the time my sponsor's bank statement is ready all I'll need to do is send my bank statement to complete the admission towards January instead of fall semester.
Expecting your expedited response, thanks
I am of the opinion that you should explain this to the school as you did here.

The gurus can respond as well.

Please, Is the Yellow fever certificate or card a requirement for boarding a flight?
Thanks.
They usually require this at the airport. You could pick it up for 2k or less at the Ministry of Health and the staff there will also administer some immunizations to you.

best,

10th of August
Joeluv,
men I was shocked at the rate of increase of these flight fares! Just last week, I had a 279k fare to JFK.

The best I saw for Washington Dulles on 10th August was 400k with Wakanow on Royal Air Maroc. You might also want to consider flying to JFK New York (which is usually cheaper than washington) and then a Bus trip to Washington if that's your final destination. Just a thought you might want to check out.
All the best!

Is it possible to defer twice? Pls I need response asap
Your school should give the best answer. Duke deferred my admission from Fall 2017 till Fall 2019 and asked me to use the two years to find funding.

PLEASE GUYS I NEED YOUR HELP

I made a mistake on my DS160 and I already submit and booked for interview. Is there a way to edit it or cancel that one and fill another?
On submission, you will get a message that the information submitted cannot be changed anymore. I suggest you go through with this visa appointment, you never know, the Vo may not even ask you anything in the area where the mistake was made.

I didn't have experience amending or canceling anything so anybody that did might add to what has been said so far.

You should book one way flight.

Do you know precisely when your program would finish as to book a return? Even at that, I don't know that airlines can have flight schedules years ahead of time.

VISA approved this morning at Abuja Embassy of the US.

I was slated for 9:00 am. Got there around 8:20am. You will have to stay at the private car parking area about 60 meters from the embassy entrance. 25 Mins later, 9:00 am appointees were called in.

Windows 6,7 and 8 were at work. The moment I joined the final queue, there were about 15 people ahead of me and mehn, blue papers were all over the place! Of these people ahead of me, I saw only 2 white papers; a black man with wife and two kids and a white man who was alone. I was like God what exactly are these people looking for? One guy going to Washington DC for studies did all his questions right yet was denied by the black lady on window 7.

Fast forward to my turn on windows 6 (White man, reddish eyes, late thirties, early forties):

Vo Good morning and how are you
Bros Good morning I’m fine (while slotting in my Passport and I20)

Vo okay , took 20 secs to read the I20 and asked Why VCU?
Bros VCU (in full) has a good business school and I interviewed with two doctoral faculty members who encouraged me to apply

Vo Still reading I20… How did you get the assistantship?
Bros My 1st degree GPA and My 2nd degree GPA were very good and my Statement of Purpose as well.

Vo Typing on his system…Are you married
Bros Yes

Vo Kids?
Bros Yes, one

Vo Typed for about 20 seconds and slotted out the white papers to me and said, “this paper will show you how to pick up your visa.” Have a
good day.

That was it! Just about 4 questions! And people I prayed to God and said I don’t want a lengthy interview. I specifically told Him I don’t want it to last more than 1 minute and He answered!

Pray very well, fast if you can (I did) and prepare using the transcripts here to develop your own answers.

I compiled some Fall 2017 transcripts (up to page 331) some weeks ago. It’s down below:

Thanks to Texrem and Oludare01 who reviewed my responses to the common questions!

All the best to everyone!

Search Nairaland for TOSJAMES or OLUDARE01. They both help with that. I was helped by TOSJAMES.

I also saw WALSPRING saying he can help too.

Hello buddies, I wanna make an inquiry bout the SEVIS fee. Do I need to pay the fee before I can get my I-20huh? huh huh huh
No you don't. But SEVIS fee will be made before you go for visa interview. At least two business days before your visa appointment so that your payment can reflect on their system. For your I-20, keep talking to your university to know what is delaying it and what you should do.

I unequivocally advise you to go with Duke. The opportunities Duke would open you up to is limitless. What I would advise while at Duke is to make the most of your time there by forming strong networks with the students, faculty and the community there and sustaining same thereafter. These will be extremely useful should you decide to return to the US after the compulsory period away must have elapsed. I'm stating these because I personally have a friend whose life has totally transformed as a result of attending Duke. I'm restrained from stating the specifics of what I mean for the sake of his privacy.

In fact, I got an application waiver to a program at Duke due to his recommendation. Even though my application this time wasn't successful as I had just about two weeks to prepare and my GRE wasn't competitive enough, I plan to reapply after boosting my scores.

Congrats on your admission to Duke and I can tell you that you will never regret going to Duke. Notice I didn't mention the Texas University simply because I don't think it's worth considering even though it's a Phd program.
Thank you Dcutey. Almost all of the people that have spoken are leaning toward Duke. I am soaking it all in.Thank you.

Hehehe if u think it so easy then everyone would be doing it ...

you can switch to J to F , no problem but your 2 years residency requirement is waiting ahead unless you get a waiver... if you dont get a waiver then to switch from J1 to F1 (no problem) but after that to switch to any H visa or adjust your status . It pops up that you need to have completed the 2 years residency due to your previous j1

You can look into waiver process and see if along the line there any similar issues u can tap into and get a waiver for the 2 year residency... others have done so successfully however difficult
I will look into the waiver, honestly.
Thank you very much!

LagosismyHome:
There are two types of J1 , the one with 2 year home residency requirement and without ........For me , if you plan to stay in the US after graduation then i will not recommend a J1 with 2 years . It usually becomes a problem because you cannot switch to h1B (any H or L visa) until after you have completed 2 years going back or you can get a waiver (but that difficult) ....... . so what you need to confirm if it really has the 2 year requirement .

If you dont mind coming back to naija for 2 years after MSC and then going back to your PHD ... that can work too . At that point you have a good MSC on your CV / Resume which might open more PHD funding and even within Duke and by two years you would have fulfilled your 2 years going back . ...overall is something you have to think deeply about

Regarding phd and job offer and schools networks .... cant really comments. My brain could never allow me do a phd tongue grin ..too lazy
Thank you LagosismyHome.

Your input is much appreciated.

The J-1 requires the 2 years go-home requirement. Yes one can't switch to H or L visa but can one switch to F-1 at the time of expiry of the 2-year J-1?

It appears your dream is to stay back in the States after study.
However, my advise is for you to take up the offer from Duke cos of its reputation except the Texas school in question is UT Austin or TAMU
Duke has a global reputation and industry connection. Im sure you will get placement in a nice multinational here in Nigeria. After two years, you can be transfered abroad
Thats my opinion though. Duke is like a jewel on your CV
Whats the program?

I'll be applying to Duke for Fall 18. I sent you a PM
Thanks for your input Chidinho10. The school is neither UT Austin nor TAMU, otherwise it would be an easy decision. It's UTRGV.
The Duke program is Masters in International Development Policy (MIDP).
I have replied your PM.
All the best in your 2018 application!
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by ecoleco: 11:15am On Mar 14, 2017
I have a decision to make and I will appreciate your input:

I got a PhD offer from one of the 'University of Texas' schools and I put this school under my SAFE SCHOOL category during my application.

I also got an MSc offer from Duke University but the funding will come from an external organization.

Because of the reputation behind Duke University, and the not-so-good reputation from where I got the PhD offer, I couldn't dismiss the Duke offer easily.

I am willing to do the Msc with Duke and then move on to Phd in Duke or another similarly placed university, however the external organization funding the Msc constrains the recipients to J-1 Visa, meaning you return home for at least 2 years after your schooling. Without this constraint, I will choose the MSc offer from Duke university and sacrifice the two years for another Masters degree. Please does anybody in the house have any experience with J-1 visa or know someone who is currently on J-1?

My little beef with the PhD offer is the kind of of school where I will get placement after my studies. It seems that where you obtained your PhD matters with respect to the kind of schools that give you an offer after your studies. Meaning that only schools in the same league and category as your school will give you tenure offers and not schools in a higher league. Or doesn't it matter?

I would advice you go for your F-1 alone. Your family should go afterwards for their F-2. If you want her to deliver here, she can go with the B-2 visa and do all the necessary arrangement, that is after you have travelled. She can give birth and change her status to F-2 with your kids
Thanks Slimmy2005,
I have been thinking about your comments and it is a wise thing to do. W.r.t changing of status from B-2 to F-2, do you know if she would need to return to Nigeria to change it or if the change can be effected in the US without any need to return?
Thank you.
