Because the day the boy beat your son is the last day he should've been allowed near him, but you allowed them to continue playing together and without him apologizing (or did he?) to your son for abusing him. If you're going to let them continue playing together (which has been the case and which you shouldn't have allowed), then you or your wife must be present outside when they're playing due to the abusive nature of the boy, not you going inside to take a nap and leaving your son alone with him unsupervised.

Regarding the boy kicking the ball to the bush despite your warning them not to play long shot and high ball, since he was laughing about it to aggravate you further, he probably did it intentionally. It's possible the boy is jealous of your son, especially if your son had more toys and gadgets than he does, but your son is generous, so there's no reason he should be envious. You say he's your friend's son but you should be wary of this your friend, because it's also possible the boy's father is the one condoning the boy's bad behaviour towards your son.

You did the right thing by finally telling your son to no longer play with him, but you should've also verbally warned the boy to stay away from your son. However, you can ascertain that they never play together again by being present outside when your son's playing outside. You should not be leaving a 6-yp to be playing outside unsupervised anyway, and definitely not when one of his playmates happens to be a violent bully.

You should also spend a little more time teaching your son how to be more assertive and stand up for himself.

If your son is slow to learning, you can embrace Montessori Schools for him. I have taught kids like that and after a while, they became top class among their pairs. You may consider having another child, so your kids can play board games indoors to shield them from negative influences from other badly trained kids.
