A Gainesville man was arrested Tuesday after police say he imprisoned a Santa Fe College professor against her will. Jude Chiedu Akachukwu, 19, went into the professor’s office without being invited in, closed the door and blocked the doorway, according to a Santa Fe Police Department arrest report. .

He said the professor could not leave the office until she agreed to allow him to make up an exam. When the professor said he could not make up the exam, Akachukwu grabbed her arm as she tried to walk away. .

The professor said she would call the police, and Akachukwu threw himself on the floor crying. The professor left her office and went to a nearby classroom to teach. Akachukwu followed and began to disrupt the class. Akachukwu was charged with false imprisonment, battery and disturbing the peace. He was being held Wednesday in Alachua County jail.

The Nigerian government has announced its decision to prosecute purveyors of fake news.

In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said that those behind the fake news had the intention of causing disunity among the country’s various ethnic and religious groups.

The statement was signed by Segun Adeyemi, the Special Adviser to the Minister noted that over the weekend alone, several major cases of fake news were recorded, each of them capable of causing panic, triggering chaos or setting one group against the other.

He said that a gory video of a blast that occurred many years ago was being circulated along with the false news of a bomb blast in Abuja, while news of a non-existent bomb blast in Lagos was also widely circulated.

According to Mohammed, the latest strategy being employed by the purveyors of fake news was to attribute to top government officials, improbable statements capable of destabilising the polity, causing tension and threatening the country’s unity.

"This is why we are appealing to Nigerians not to ever engage in a knee-jerk reaction to any news, and to subject every information to a very serious scrutiny by checking with security agencies and government spokespersons,” he said.
The minister described the fake news phenomenon as ‘the scourge of our times’ noting that it would “probably get worse in the months ahead”

- Governor Samuel Ortom has called on Christians to continue to pray for his administration to succeed despite daunting challenges.

Governor Ortom made the call on Sunday at the interdenominational church service organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN Benue State Chapter in conjunction with the Benue State Government held at the Makurdi Christian Centre.

Governor Ortom observed that those indicted by the Justice Kpojime Commission of Inquiry have formed a formidable force against his administration and were doing everything possible to derail its focus.

The Governor who noted that he is the most criticised and attacked Chief Executive of the State,advised Christians against supporting those that have chosen to be using social media platform to spread falsehood against his Personality and administration.

He stressed the need for those with doubts about any policy decision of his government to seek clarification from his Lieutenants who were available to attend to such matters.

Governor Ortom maintained that the dedication of the State to God was deliberate as he was acting on God’s counsel and urged Christians to be prepared to face any opposition following such stance.

Governor Ortom told the Congregation that his administration would never take God for granted and urged Clergy Men to be exemplary and practical in matching words with their actions in order not to lead their followers astray.

While promising to implement the recent bills he had signed into law, the Governor particularly warned Farmers against taking laws into their own hands to attack herdsmen most of who he stated were vacating the State.

The Governor commended the State Leadership of CAN for standing firm in prayers and urged it to keep the tempo.

– OSUN STATE GOVERNOR, RAUF AREGBESOLA SAYS THAT THE STATE IS ‘FINANCIALLY INCAPABLE’ OF RUNNING LAUTECH.

Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola has openly lamented about the crisis his government is having with students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology(LAUTECH). The institution has been shut down for months now due to the government’s inability to release funds.

Students of LAUTECH have been holding several protests with the latest being occurring last Wednesday and Thursday. They stormed the state capital, Osogbo, wielding placards and condemning the government’s attitude towards the problem. The protest totally shut down activities in the state capital as vehicular movements were halted for over eight hours.

In response, Aregbesola denied statements that his government was not concerned with the issue, he revealed that the problem could not be tackled due to poor finances. He told journalists during a media night out in the Government House, which was part of activities to commemorate his 60th birthday, that “this is not a matter of not having interest in LAUTECH. With the economic realities on ground, I cannot continue with the pattern of funding the school because we are financially incapacitated”.

Meanwhile students of LAUTECH have resorted to sleeping on the streets in protest of the indefinite closure of their school

He further stated;

“I am incapable. The funds are not just there. Though I still make contributions and my deputy governor is here to testify that I still sign cheques to make payment every month to LAUTECH. It is small. It is not a matter of interest, but incapacity. The failure of the management to live within its means is another issue”.

“We stop giving financial support to Osun State University (UNIOSUN), an institution with about 12,000 student population about three years ago and the university is still running on its own till today. The population of LAUTECH is about 33,000 and the difference between the tuition fees being paid by LAUTECH and UNIOSUN is not much,”

However, he disclosed that a private audit firm had been commissioned by both Oyo and Osun, co-owners of the University, to carry out a total audit of the institution’s management and finances.

This is absolutely no joke! Winnebago County Police, Wisconsin in the United States have begun a manhunt for thieves who stole a Nigerian Dwarf goat.

Look Naija gathered that the Nigerian Dwarf goat was stolen from the Town of Poygan, which has a very small population of just over a 1000 people, with 397 households, and 308 families, according to the census figures available.

The owners of the goat reportedly claimed that the goat was taken on May 25, and they are hoping for her safe return.

The Sheriff’s Office shared in a Facebook post with caption Cinnamon is under a vet’s care and needs medication.

The Facebook post has attracted many comments, with one saying: "who the hell steals a goat?"

The County's Sheriff office is now in search of the missing Goat.

A 32-year-old man, Lukman Yaya, who claimed to be a prophet, was on Monday sentenced to 25 months’ imprisonment by an Ota Magistrates ‘Court in Ogun.

The senior magistrate, Mr S. O.Banwo, in his ruling did not give the convict any option of fine.

Yaya, whose address was not disclosed in court, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of impersonation and stealing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 8 at about 11.30a.m.at Joju Area of Ota, Ogun.

Gbesi said that the accused who pretended to be a prophet unlawfully obtained N17,500 from one Aderibigbe Toyosi, with the intention to assist her to solve some of her spiritually problems, an agreement he did not fulfill.

He also said that the accused stole a mobile phone valued at N22,500 from the complainant in the process of helping her to solve her problems.

Gbesi said that the offences contravened Sections 249(d) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
