Nneoma Anieto was born in Onitsha, Anambra State. Emeka Onochie is the second place winner of the recently concluded Dusty Manuscript Contest which was birthed and organized by OkadaBooks and sponsored by Guarantee Trust Bank. His entry is titled, “The Orchid Protocol.”

Lagos, Nigeria, is renowned for a lot of things – her buzz, her vibrant social life, and her cosmopolitan nature. And being home to about twenty-four million people, it is not surprising that parties are frequent in Lagos. Lagos parties are typically very bubbly and can be a source of competition between neighbors, families, and friends.

“ Memoirs of a Lagos Wedding Planner,” by Tolulope Popoola chronicle the experiences of a typical wedding planner in Lagos. The name suggests they are actual events and not fiction, but then, truth they say is stranger than fiction.

There are ten episodes in the book and most of the accounts are absolutely hilarious. The episodes capture the frenzy and glitz of Lagos weddings and give us a glimpse of the “behind the scene” or “pre-wedding” drama.

The planner has the advantage of very close interactions with the bride, groom and their families during the planning process. The planner is, therefore, able to see signs of impending disaster sometimes. However, because the planner is not infallible, she does get the shock of short-lived marriages after obvious chemistry and bonding between some couples during the wedding. I like that admission because it is close to what happens in real life. Sometimes marriages break up soon after they were enacted and outsiders wonder what really went wrong.

‘If our sister dies, you will be in soup,’ Alister said and then hung up

What have I gotten myself into? I wondered out loud as I started to dial Abraham’s number. The line wasn’t connecting but I kept on dialing.

I did not bargain for all this rubbish. How can Alister call to threaten me? I only wanted to help and my help should not land me in trouble.

Frustrated now with the bad network refusing to connect, I start to get ready for my emergency trip to Lagos. Alister had asked me to come. As I packed, I allowed my mind to reflect back on how this problem started.

I was sitting outside my Beauty Shop one morning when a car pulled up in front of me. When the door opened, I was surprised to see Abraham step out of it.

‘Rosaline, good morning,’ he greeted.

‘Hmmmm, Oga Abraham,’ I hailed him, ‘good morning.’

‘What’s up?’ He asked.

‘Nothing o. Business is slow these days’ I replied, moving to get an extra chair for him to sit.

We exchanged more pleasantries and then from one topic to the other, we began to talk about his new line of business. Abraham said it pays him more money than his former trade of buying and selling.

Well, one doesn’t hear good news and let it go. Besides, his talks got me curious and I asked him what this new line of business was, and when he opened up, I was like, ‘ha! really?’

Abraham had told me he was now a travel agent. I laughed so hard, tears escaped my eyes. I told him straight up that I didn’t believe him because, in truth, how many persons in Nigeria have the money to travel?

Abraham tried to convince me not to think that way because he had a lot of customers and also, his customers get jobs overseas even before they travel.

‘You mean already made jobs wait for them? My eyes mocked him.

‘Yes nau’

‘I know what you mean… Prostitution and all these hard drug businesses. Is it not?

‘No oh. These are legit job offers, Rosaline.’

‘hmmmm, I don’t believe you anyway’ I insisted.

‘We get job offers like maids, teachers, minders, electricians, plate washers in restaurants, those who will clean gutters and so many others,’ Abraham said in efforts to convince me to give it a try.

And so the 2018 Dusty Manuscript Contest has come to an end. It has been celebration mood since yesterday for the top 3 winners.

Coming first was Kukogho Iruesiri Samson, who happens to be an author, publisher, Poet and the CEO of Authorpedia. He came first with his entry manuscript titled, “The Devil’s Pawn,” and he went home with the prize of 1 million naira cash and a publishing contract with Farafina Publishers.

Talking about his manuscript, the winner of this contest, Kukogho Iruesiri Samson, said that he had written the first draft about 9 (nine) years ago.

I’m not a fan of memoirs. I’ve never been one. But then, there are times I come across some, and depending on the content, I found them really insightful, educative, motivating and sometimes, entertaining. However, Omoni Oboli’s “The Stars Are Ageless,” is the total icing on the cake.

The moment I started, I didn’t want to put it down. Almost every page I turned got me hooked. The book tells the story of her birth, her childhood, marriage, life as an actress, obstacles and how she came on top.

I’ve read a lot of feedback on this book before I started reading it, and everyone praised it. I thought, well, maybe is because they are Omoni’s fans. I must confess I wasn’t really a fan of hers until we started to communicate with her about having her book on OkadaBooks. And then I visited her page and saw all the work she has done and was like, wow! Have I been under the rock?

Then I had an Instagram interview chat with her last week and it was really an eye-opener. I began to appreciate her personality, as she is the type who is natural and easy to get along with. With Omoni, what you see is what you get.

Sally Kenneth Dadzie is a writer, a blogger, a wife, a mother, and an Okadabooks bestselling author. She’s also been named one of Nigeria’s most influential writers under 40. In 2017, she won the award for ‘Fiction Writer of the Year,’ at the Nigerian Writers Awards. When she’s not writing, she teams up with her husband to help people find and express the power of their sexuality.

In a time where people are just opening their minds to the great potentials being a writer and author holds, Sally is glad to have a family who supports and encourages her writing.

But Sally really didn’t think she was going to be so involved in writing until she completed her first movie script in 2005. It was a first time, and according to her, it felt good. “I said to myself that I could see myself doing this for life. But I didn’t start writing until years later,” Sally said.

Being a voracious reader, it is true that a lot of authors, even those whose works she read in her childhood, have in one way or the other influenced Sally’s writing and choice of career today.

The title of her first ever published book had to be Fish Brain Madhouse. The last of the Fish Brain Series. It is a book Sally started writing because of personal reasons that restricted her from pursuing her day job at the time. Sally pointed out that writing this book was more of a hobby at the start, than a writing business.



Other books she has written include: In The Name Of Papa, It’s Another Saturday, Novocaine Knights, His Little Black Book, The Fourth Finger, No Heart Feelings, To Tame A Virgin and The Fish Brain series.

The events in her stories are sometimes a mixture of real-life experience, with fiction. It could be her own experience or someone else’s experience. This is so because according to Sally, “People inspire me always.”

Contrary to what some of you think, Sally has said, “writing is my day and night job.”

Sally works (writes) mostly at night. Daytime too, but not as much. She writes every day unless she or a family member is ill, or she’s too busy with something else that’s equally important.

OkadaBooks at The Inaugural International Publishers Association (IPA) Africa Seminar



On the 9th of May, 2018, we were glad to have been part of The inaugural International Publishers Association (IPA) Africa Seminar. It was held in an Oscar-like decorated conference hall at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. Titled‘ Publishing for Sustainable Development – The Role of Publishers in Africa,’ and jointly organized by the IPA and the Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA).

The seminar focused on a lot of key factors affecting publishing and book distribution in Nigeria and African at large.

The seminar started with a welcome speech from The President of the Nigerian Publishers Association, Gbadega Adedapo. His opening speech touched on the fact that the African Publishing Industry has a good story to tell but was not yet drumming it loudly. He attributed it partly to the fact that the African Publishing industry presently faces a very high level of piracy.
